Snowmobile BRP Lynx Commander 800 R E-TEC

BRP Lynx Commander 800 R E-TEC is a powerful snowmobile, one of the most productive among utilitarian machines in this class. Here we have products from a Canadian developer that have passed a whole range of factory tests in harsh climatic zones. The car has an aggressive design, made in the proprietary BRP concept. Moreover, the device has a rather rare design - instead of classic telescopic struts, A-shaped arms are used, thanks to which the suspension characteristics are significantly improved, and benefit handling, smoothness and softness. Also included in the basic package is a roll stabilization system, front adjustable shock absorbers with an adjustment height of up to 210 mm and other reinforced components. Among other features, we note the rear shock absorbers, which can also be adjusted – in the range of up to 340 mm. Based on this, the universal capabilities of the device can be tested in forested and snowy areas, with deep and loose snowdrifts, as well as on compacted roads.

To ensure a reliable and fast ride, the developers took care of installing the following components:

  1. High-performance Rotax E-TEC powerplant with long service life
  2. Ski extensions
  3. Massive caterpillars. Their width is 500 mm
  4. High lugs
  5. Steering wheel adjustment function
  6. Handrails for the driver.

It is noteworthy that the machine is convenient to use even in a standing position. Especially for this purpose, the steering wheel has a curved shape and is supplemented with a mountain strap, and the instrument panel itself is located quite high. This ensures comfortable riding in a standing position during aggressive movement, as well as in a standard sitting position. In addition, such an arrangement of control elements indicates a high level of ergonomics.

The weight of the structure is distributed along the entire length of the machine, and this has improved directional stability, which is especially important when cornering. In addition, especially for this purpose, the machine is equipped with long tracks that overcome all road irregularities well and allow you to climb and descend any slopes and off-road areas. This could also include ice space. In terms of its driving performance, the snowmobile of the same name is not inferior to more famous and expensive cars. Let us note another important feature - a gearbox with a low gear ratio to simplify the transportation of cargo containers in harsh conditions.

Structural strength is enhanced by a one-piece chassis and spot-welded frame. Thanks to this chassis, it became possible to install a narrowed seat. Thus, it was possible to maintain a natural position while driving. The presence of heated steering wheel and seat functions had a beneficial effect on comfort and ease of use. It is noteworthy that inside the base seat there is a spacious compartment for storing documents, things, accessories and other important items. As an option, you can install a passenger seat, which can be easily removed.

Particularly noteworthy are the new skis with Blade XC blades, which provide ideal grip properties. In this way, it was possible to eliminate slipping and slipping when cornering. The result is improved handling and stability. By the way, the snowmobile’s chassis was modified by specialists from the Finnish division of BRP. The overall weight of the ski is reduced by 2.2 kg compared to standard Blade skis. The high windshield is borrowed from its predecessor.

Basic equipment elements:

  1. Metal steering wheel with handles
  2. Driver's handrail
  3. Electric starter
  4. Towbar
  5. Rearview mirror
  6. Heated steering wheel function
  7. Digital instrument panel.

Design and equipment

The weight of the structure is distributed along the length of the snowmobile. The massive caterpillar allows you to overcome uneven terrain and climb steep slopes without slipping. High lugs ensure easy movement on flat off-road terrain, including ice. In terms of capabilities, the Lynx Commander 800 R E-TEC can be compared with a professional mountain all-terrain vehicle, although it costs 2-3 times less.

Basic equipment of the snowmobile:

  • steel steering wheel with handles and driver's handrail;
  • one-piece windshield;
  • electric starter;
  • towbar;
  • rearview mirror;
  • heated handles;
  • digital multifunctional information center.

The curved handlebar, complemented by a mountain strap, and the high position of the instrument panel make the Lynx Commander 800 R E-TEC equally comfortable to use in any driving position (standing or sitting). The one-piece chassis and angled tunnel allow for a narrower seat for a more comfortable fit. Heated steering wheel grips make long trips comfortable. For an additional fee, a passenger seat is installed (without it, the platform is used to place cargo).

Among the advantages of a snowmobile are:

  • low fuel consumption;
  • start from the first revolution;
  • low level of emissions of harmful substances;
  • instant response of the throttle trigger;
  • large power reserve - up to 325 km (on a prepared road);
  • low oil consumption;
  • smooth running;
  • automatic conservation;
  • minimal amount of smoke;
  • automatic run-in.

The rear shock absorbers are adjustable according to the body height (range – 340 mm). Thanks to this, the device can be reconfigured for different routes - for forest roads with loose and deep snow or compacted routes. The BRP Links Commander 800 has skis with a Blade XC blade, which are characterized by excellent handling. The runner weight is 2.2 kg less than standard Blade skis.

Modifications

Lynx Commander 800 R E-TEC is a relatively new snowmobile that has already received several modifications. Among them is the extreme version of the Commander 800 Xtrim RE TEC, which received a sports front suspension and an improved engine. The result was a faster vehicle. After some time, an equally interesting version of the snowmobile from this series was released. It is called LYNX Xtrim Commander 800 Touratech R E-TEC and stands out with its bright tuning from the German studio Touratech. Of course, the improvements affected not only the external, but also the technical part. As a result, it was possible to create a car with a reliable chassis and sporty settings, but without sacrificing comfort. In addition, the car received an adjustable rear suspension, and adjustments can be made directly from the steering column. The front suspension was left the same so as not to complicate the design.

Modified versions of the snowmobile

Lynx Commander 800 R E-TEC is a relatively new model, but it already has several interesting modifications. The modifications to the snowmobile were carried out by Finnish specialists from the BRP division. For example, the Lynx Commander 800 Xtrim R E-TEC version differs from the basic version in its sporty front suspension and upgraded engine, which make the device faster. Another innovation in this version is the electrically adjustable rear suspension, which can be adjusted directly from the steering wheel. The front suspension remains the same.

Engine

The machine is equipped with a Rotax 800R E-TEC engine with proprietary 3-D RAVE technology. In addition, let's pay attention to the mixed cooling system with a radiator and an electric fan. The system also integrates liquid cooling. These components are combined with each other in such a way as to ensure optimal temperature and stable operation. The engine starts using an electric starter - by pressing a button, or manually.

The motor in question has little in common with classic engines with a two-stroke layout. The developers paid special attention to the direct injection system, which is responsible for controlling mixture formation. Fuel injection is carried out directly into the combustion chamber, and occurs at the moment when the intake and exhaust valves close. As a result, this had a beneficial effect on efficiency, relative noiselessness and minimal vibrations. By the way, in terms of noise, this unit can be compared with more productive 4-stroke engines. Thanks to its large power reserves, the Rotax 800R E-TEC engine can easily withstand heavy loads - for example, when driving with a trailer and two passengers. The engine displacement is 0.8 liters and the power is 164 horsepower. With such indicators, a snowmobile is capable of reaching over 100 km/h.

Advantages of the Rotax 800R E-TEC motor:

  1. Low fuel consumption (12 liters per 100 km)
  2. Quick start (from the first revolutions)
  3. Minimum noise and high environmental performance
  4. Fast throttle response
  5. High efficiency and long range (325 km)
  6. The engine does not require much oil
  7. Smooth idle speed
  8. Automatic preservation
  9. The engine produces virtually no unpleasant odors or smoke
  10. Running in automatic mode.

»In 1934, as part of a competition to create a combat coastal bomber in the United States, the iconic Boeing Flying Fortress was designed. It was the “Flying Fortress” that became the first mass-produced American all-metal heavy four-engine aircraft, which, thanks to its deadly efficiency and unique ability to return to its home airfield even with serious damage, acquired the status of a legend. It was the B-17 that became one of the most notable and key figures in the history of world aircraft manufacturing in the middle of the last century. Perhaps our today’s hero has every chance to repeat the fate of the “Flying Fortress” and become a one-of-a-kind machine that determines the direction of development of the entire industry for many years to come!

In search of new customers and markets, the world of snow machines is constantly changing. Today, the mixture of established stereotypes and styles, the Brownian movement of engineering and the emergence of new, previously unknown types of snowmobiles are quite commonplace. In addition, in recent years it has become difficult to surprise sophisticated and spoiled riders with anything. Watching the production search for new capabilities of classic snowmobile equipment, the public has seen a lot: universal dual-purpose vehicles and utilitarian machines built on the most progressive sports platforms, unprecedented ergonomic delights and complex engineering solutions used on modern “sports” and “mountain” vehicles... But There has probably never been a snowmobile like the Lynx Xtrim Commander 800 E-Tec on the market! It combines all the practical, utilitarian features of a heavy and reliable wide-track Wide Track machine with the powerful and explosive two-stroke character of the Lynx and Ski Doo sports models.

Design

The Finnish snowmobile is built on the LXU platform, traditional for “scrap” Lynx. In general terms, it resembles the Canadian development REV-XU - naturally, with its own original features. The frame, designed in Rovaniemi, differs from the steel “skeleton” of Ski Doo snowmobiles in its more monumental structure and is adapted for the installation of the proprietary Finnish suspension PPS 5900 A (Pauli Piippola Suspension), which originally came from the world of cross-country snowmobiles. KYB 36/46 rear shock absorbers are responsible for damping the rear suspension. At the front, the snowmobile's suspension is mounted on traditional A-arms and adjustable KYB 36R shock absorbers.

Another hallmark of the LXU is the beveled tunnel ribs, which allow even when using WT (Wide Track) tracks with a width of 500 mm to provide a good level of comfort, especially when riding standing! The track length is 3923 mm, and the lug height is 44 mm. Such almost “mountain” values make it possible for Xtrim Commander to drive through snow of any depth and degree of “puffiness”.

But to spin such a huge caterpillar, an engine with a real “masculine” character is required. And, naturally, such a setup was found in the BRP family of snowmobiles! This is the already legendary 2-stroke 2-cylinder Rotax 800R E-TEC engine with a displacement of 799.5 cm3 and a power of 163 hp. With. The lightweight and powerful engine has outstanding fuel efficiency, consuming just 11.2 l/100 km. A snowmobile equipped with such a motor can travel 325 km on one gas tank fill! Today, this outstanding powerplant can be found in almost all top-end Ski Doo and Lynx sports machines. To stoically withstand increased loads, the engine cooling system is equipped with an additional radiator and fan. Also, to give the Xtrym Commander real utilitarian characteristics, the model’s transmission features a reduction gear, allowing you to easily tow heavy sleds and sleds, as well as storm the steepest snow-covered slopes.

In business

The very first drive of the Lynx Xtrim Commander showed that the Finns’ car turned out to be very, very interesting. At low engine speeds, the snowmobile behaves like an ordinary wide-track “utility.” Heavy and clumsy. Excessive directional stability, dictated by a giant long caterpillar, and excessive (especially compared to sports models) weight!

But you just have to press the gas trigger, and the car seems to be replaced: cannon-like accelerations, sharp and not always controlled accelerations make it absolutely clear that there is a serious and “adult” power plant under the hood. Thanks to the symbiosis of a wide track and a powerful sports engine, Lynx automatically wins the “Powder Conqueror” category. Riding through deep snow on this snowmobile is a pleasure. Xtrim Commander completely calmly storms both snow-covered fields and deep gullies and forest ravines covered with treacherous snow. And, despite its excessively applied massiveness, the device feels great on snowy slopes. With the proper skill, you can quite easily “traverse” on it and apply mountain “boondocking” skills in real life! Another use that is perhaps atypical for “scrap”: the snowmobile jumps well, despite its massiveness. The power of the power plant is more than enough for full acceleration, and the legendary PPS adequately handles landings.

If we think sensibly, then, if not for the rather serious price of 719,000 rubles, the Xtrim Commander 800 E-Tec could become the most versatile snowmobile in the world. Thanks to the wide and long track, Lynx can perform any household task: from fishing/hunting trips to transporting sleds of almost unlimited weight. At the same time, a powerful and technologically advanced engine allows the snowmobile not to give up not only for tourism, but also (let’s call it that) for sports use. Frankly, when choosing a snowmobile for everyday use, for example, in the mountainous regions of Siberia, the Urals or the Caucasus, I would think hard about finding additional funds to buy not a simple and boring “utility”, but a new “Flying Fortress” - Lynx Xtrim Commander 800 E -Tec. /

Reviews

  • Alexander, St. Petersburg. This is one of the special vehicles I have ever ridden. The Commander 800 R E-TEC not only looks powerful, but also drives just as powerful. As soon as I sit in it, I immediately want to press the gas with all my heart. Despite the power of more than 160 hp. pp., the snowmobile is quite economical - fuel consumption in extreme driving mode does not exceed 22 liters per 126 kilometers. The measurements were taken while driving on normal snowy roads, without any snowdrifts. The dynamic capabilities of the car are impressive. And here, with exaggeration, we can say that in front of me is a ground-controlled missile. In terms of reliability, the snowmobile is very durable, and there cannot be any serious disadvantages. I was convinced of this after two years of use.
  • Kubrat, Grozny. At first, I had purely positive impressions of using this powerful machine. I immediately noticed the high build quality, perfectly fitted parts, absence of strong noise and vibrations, comfortable seat with adjustments and high maneuverability. When starting the engine, just press the treasured button. The car accelerates like a sports snowmobile. A few months later I discovered a problem with the automatic warm-up system that kicks in when starting up. The fact is that at this moment a special display should appear on the display. When it goes out, the warm-up is complete and you can start driving. But after a while the display stopped going out altogether. It turned out that this was just an error, which was later removed from the service. In the first year of use I drove 1000 km. The machine was constantly used with standard tracks, which are without spikes. Despite this, there were no problems with directional stability.
  • Vitaly, Vorkuta. I used to have a Viking, then I changed it to a Commander. It’s clear that the difference between these machines is like heaven and earth. But it took me a while to get used to the new car. The fact is that at first I had to get used to starting from a place too abruptly. Fast acceleration up to 160 km/h is mesmerizing. Then, of course, I got used to it, but I have to be extremely careful. There are some shortcomings in the ergonomics - for example, I didn’t like the glass, which is located very low. In terms of handling, there are no complaints - the snowmobile is very maneuverable and dynamic. The device goes absolutely everywhere thanks to the 44th toe on the track, like on mountain models. In general, I was not mistaken with my choice - it turned out to be a kind of semi-sports and mountain snowmobile utility vehicle. The most significant disadvantage is the high price, expensive maintenance and scarce spare parts.
  • Rustam, Sevastopol. The car is relatively new, only driven 250 km. Of course, I won’t draw serious conclusions just yet, but I already have general impressions. For example, I was convinced of the high carrying capacity of the snowmobile - it pulled at least two comrades (including me) along with the load with a bang. It is also possible to move in the forest, through the steppes, along relief terrain, deep snowdrifts, and also on highways. In the latter case, they accelerated to 150 km/h. There was one case when the snowmobile simply stood up and could not budge. This happened on virgin soil when we were moving uphill. I came to the conclusion that I should try to turn it back. Did not help. I still had to trample the caterpillar. It helped, let's move on. Gasoline consumption is on average 20 liters - this figure is normal for a snowmobile with such power.
