Rotax 593 HO E-TEC
The Rotax® 593 HO E-TEC engine was introduced in 2009 and has already become legendary. Reliable direct fuel injection system based on E-TEC BRP ® technology, and has achieved great recognition with Evinrude outboard motors. The original design of the E-TEC system does not add weight to the snowmobile. The engine design is the same as that used by Rotax on carbureted and SDI models, but E-TEC technology provides the same maximum power, but without the use of a battery. The engine produces power and torque throughout its entire operating range and has lightning-fast throttle response.
Thanks to the 3D RAVE valve system, fuel consumption and emissions are significantly reduced. This engine is truly the greenest two-stroke engine - its fuel and oil consumption are the lowest on the market, which is even more environmentally friendly than most four-stroke engines. In practice, the E-TEC engine is smoke-free and odorless and starts easily in the most severe frost. The ease of use of the E-TEC engine is increased due to additional service functions - such as automatic preservation for the summer season, in just a couple of minutes.
Review of ROTAX snowmobile engines
In this review, we would like to discuss the engines that are present in the 2020 model year snowmobiles of the Canadian company BRP Lynx and Ski-Doo.
We will look at the most popular engine options: four-stroke ROTAX 600ACE and 900ACE and two-stroke 600R E-Tec.
All engines that are installed on BRP motorcycles bear the proud name ROTAX. This world-famous company, whose plant is located in Austria, has a long history and belongs to the BOMBARDIER corporation.
Exceptional workmanship and reliability with high technical characteristics have allowed ROTAX to gain a leading position in its segment of the gasoline engine market. The company's office and main production are located in the north of Austria, in the city of Gunskirchen. The history of ROTAX dates back to 1920, when ROTAX-WERK AG was founded in Dresden (Germany). In 1943 the company moved to neighboring Austria.
In the late fifties, snowmobile inventor Joseph-Armand Bombardier fulfilled his childhood dream: the Bombardier company he founded in 1942 began mass production of snowmobiles and in 1962 he opted for ROTAX engines. After eight years of successful collaboration, the Canadian corporation included ROTAX in its structure and today the company is officially called BRP-Rotax GmbH & Co KG.
In addition to snowmobile engines, in the seventies ROTAX produced large quantities of 2-stroke motorcycle engines in the Motocross and Enduro series. In 1982, the first four-stroke motorcycle engine was announced and production of lightweight, reliable aircraft engines began. Over the past three decades, ROTAX has firmly established itself as a leader in the aircraft engine market. Currently, in addition to motorcycle, aircraft engines, engines for snowmobiles and Can-Am ATVs, ROTAX produces engines for SEA-DOO jet skis and the volume of production has now exceeded 7 million engines.
Let's get back to snowmobiles. Let's start with the 60 horsepower ROTAX 600ACE engine. This 2-cylinder in-line compact engine appeared in the BRP motorcycle line about 10 years ago and was basically a modernized version of the engine that ROTAX produced for BMW motorcycles.
This engine immediately attracted the attention of consumers, as the Ski-Doo TUNDRA 600ACE LT and Skandic 600ACE snowmobiles literally revolutionized the idea of how quiet and predictable a snowmobile engine could be. Smooth throttle response, high torque, incredible fuel efficiency and the quietest engine sound of any snowmobile engine!
With all this, this 4-stroke engine weighed only 6 kg more than its 2-stroke 600 cc “colleague” Rotax 600 E-Tec. And the low weight of the engine means, first of all, the controllability and maneuverability of the snowmobile!
In the next generation from 2022, this engine received an electronic throttle control system iTC (intelligent Throttle Control) and an electronic invertible throttle trigger with a resistor, instead of a cable drive. What did this give to consumers? Even greater comfort and range of engine operating mode settings.
The convenient, reversible trigger with an electronic resistor is very easy to press and can be reversed, which is especially important at these distances. The three electronic operating modes SPORT-STANDARD-ECO of the 600ACE engine are switched by a button on the dashboard. You can switch while driving and as a result, the driver can either turn on the most economical and smooth driving mode ECO, the normal STD mode or the “peppy” sports mode with a sharper response to pressing the trigger. For example, the Lynx Yeti 600 ACE 59 is very popular thanks to this engine. It pleases hunters with its quiet sound and autonomy, the ability to cope with towing a sled, the controllability of a snowmobile due to the low weight of the engine and its compactness, and is also used for rentals. ECO mode is not only economical and smooth, but also sets a maximum speed limit of up to 72 km/h, while due to its smooth response it allows beginners to learn how to operate a snowmobile.
Who is the ROTAX 600ACE motor for? For those who need maximum autonomy and quietness combined with high maneuverability of a snowmobile.
The next 4-stroke engine is the ROTAX 900ACE, equipped since its introduction in 2014 with the iTC system and electronic throttle trigger. This 3-cylinder engine produces 90 hp. and in the modernized version, which appeared last season on some models, its power reaches 95 hp. the Ranger *49 light utility class touring snowmobile with a 900 ACE engine impresses with its dynamics, handling and cross-country ability.
There is already a whole combination of advantages here - serious power and impressive torque, allowing snowmobiles with ROTAX 900ACE to compete in dynamics with more powerful representatives of the 2-stroke family. As well as a confident start and traction, allowing the use of utility-class snowmobiles Lynx Ranger 69 900 ACE , Expedition SWT 900 ACE , Skandic SWT 900 ACE , Commander 900 ACE for long-distance tourist trips for two, and for hunting, and for work where transportation is expected cargo and towing loaded sleds.
In the 2022 season, we have already seen a turbocharged 150-horsepower version of this engine on sports snowmobiles.
In the 2022 model year, the turbo version will also delight us on the wide-track snowmobiles Lynx Commander 900ACE TURBO and Ski - Doo Expedition SE Turbo .
How did the ROTAX designers turn 95 horsepower into 150 with the help of a supercharger? They installed an exhaust manifold combined with the turbine, made changes to 24 parts of the standard ROTAX 900ACE, redesigned the piston group, strengthened the crankshaft and increased the power of the cooling system. In addition, the new ROTAX 900 TURBO features a new oil pump and more powerful fuel injection nozzles.
Who is the ROTAX 900ACE motor for? For those who are demanding in terms of acceleration dynamics, love high speeds and periodically tow heavy loads. This is also an excellent motor for touring-class snowmobiles, combining high power and impressive traction, while pleasing with its quiet, bassy sound.
But the most compact, light and powerful 125-horsepower representative of our review is the ROTAX 600R engine with an E-tec direct fuel injection system.
Before it, snowmobiles were equipped with its 117-horsepower predecessor, the 600 E-Tes, which had proven itself on sports, touring, and even super-wide-track snowmobiles. For example, the utilitarian snowmobile Lynx ARMY 600 E - Tec , which is deservedly popular among hunters, is also being produced this year with a 600 E-Tec engine.
The updated version marked “R” is not only an increase in power. Essentially, this is a motor created from scratch. ROTAX 600R has the “golden ratio”, characteristic of representatives of sports class engines, when the piston diameter is almost equal to its stroke. This guarantees quick throttle response and rapid acceleration. In addition, the new 600R engine features new dual reed valves and an integrated compact starter. The new engine appeared last season on narrow-track models: on the sports-touring Lynx Xterrain 600 R on the light utilitarian touring snowmobile Lynx 49* Ranger 600 R.
In the 2022 model year, even utilitarian models such as the Lynx WT Commander 600R will delight their owners with their “cheerful” character.
Who is the ROTAX 600R E-Tec motor for? For those who love speed, trips to the mountains, maximum responsiveness and handling. This daring, groovy engine will give you a dose of adrenaline on any road trip.
Rotax 1200 4-TEC
130 hp Rotax® 1200 4-TEC engine specifically designed for snowmobiles. Its main features are low weight, good cold starting, low exhaust emissions, wide torque range and smooth engine operation. It uses the most modern technologies that Rotax implements on motorcycles under the BMW, Aprilia and Buell brands.
The engine is equipped with an electronic fuel injection system and its torque curve is wider than that of competing engine models. A significant amount of thrust is already present at low speeds - 3000 rpm. A huge amount of torque is available to the driver throughout the entire rev range (119 Nm/7500 rpm), which guarantees confident acceleration.
The Rotax 1200 4-TEC is ideal for both touring and sport touring snowmobiles. This is one of the most economical engines on the snowmobile market - its fuel consumption is from 13 l/100 km. Characteristic features of the Rotax 1200 4-TEC engine are also environmentally friendly and a pleasant, bass sound, which shows the high power of the engine.
