Snowmobile Yamaha RS Viking Professional • Snowmobile Yamaha Professional

The Yamaha company appeared more than a hundred years ago and initially specialized in the production of musical instruments. In the 1920s, the company also began producing engines for aircraft. Thirty years later, the company's management decided to divide the corporation.

This is how a completely new enterprise, Yamaha Motors, appeared, where they continued to produce aircraft engines. In 1955, the first motorcycle rolled off this assembly line, and in 1968, a snowmobile rolled off the assembly line.

The equipment produced at the factories of this Japanese company is famous for its high quality and reliability; it is valued all over the world and has positive reviews from its owners. The manufacturer is constantly improving designs and developing new technologies. The Yamaha Viking Professional snowmobile has become the embodiment of a fundamentally new concept of utilitarian all-terrain vehicles.

Under its hood is a powerful four-stroke engine capable of producing 120 horsepower. Together with a wide track and a lever suspension, it becomes a full-fledged tractor that feels equally at home both on compacted snow and on virgin soil.

User manual

Each snowmobile manufacturer provides detailed operating instructions. The manual contains safety rules, a detailed description of the snowmobile (with diagrams), main mechanisms, controls, as well as the location of warning signs. In addition, the owner will find here information on operation, maintenance, diagnostics and troubleshooting.

Controls and monitoring devices

All main control instruments are located on the steering wheel and a fairly informative multifunctional dashboard.

Main controls:

The numbers in the figure indicate the following elements:

  1. brake lever;
  2. parking brake lever;
  3. handle heating switch;
  4. headlight mode switch button;
  5. engine switch off button;
  6. throttle control heater regulator;
  7. throttle control lever;
  8. Hood lock;
  9. gear selector;
  10. main switch;
  11. DC source (for external devices);
  12. turning on the fuel mixture enricher.

The main switch has three positions (off, on, start). If it is in the first position, then it is impossible to start the starter. The fuel mixture enricher should be used when starting the engine, as well as while it is warming up.

The multifunctional instrument panel includes the following instruments:

  • speedometer;
  • tachometer;
  • mileage counter (odometer);
  • trip meter;
  • warning lights and indicators;
  • fuel level indicator.

Break-in recommendations

One of the most important stages in the process of using any new snowmobile equipment is the break-in period. For “Profi” it is the first 500 km (300 miles). During this period, various elements of the power unit are broken in and the required working clearance is acquired.

Ask a Question

The manufacturer categorically does not recommend keeping the throttle valve open for a long time during break-in. You should also avoid situations that could lead to overheating of the engine (prolonged ascent, transportation of cargo sleds).

Recommendations for use:

First startStart the engine and let it idle for 15 minutes
0 – 160 kmDo not allow the engine to operate for a long time at a frequency above 6000 rpm
160 – 500 kmDo not allow the motor to run at more than 8000 rpm for long periods of time.
After 500 kmThe truck can be operated in normal mode

After the first 800 km, the engine oil and oil filter should be completely replaced.

Maintenance and daily checks

The manufacturer recommends carrying out the first comprehensive maintenance after the truck has driven the first 800 km (or after 40 motorcycle hours). The following maintenance should be carried out every season or every 4000 km (200 engine hours). In the corresponding section of the manual, the owner will find a special periodic maintenance card indicating the frequency. Each system component has a manual page next to it where you can find detailed instructions. Following the table is a list of required tools and recommended equipment.

Following the instructions for servicing individual track components is a list of pre-operational checks. For user convenience, it is also designed in the form of a table that contains the name of the element, types of checks and manual pages. The owner must carry out all the actions described in them before each trip.

Snowmobile Yamaha VK Professional II: farewell to winter

Winter is over, but there are still remnants of snow even in the Moscow region, not to mention the North. And we decided to combine Maslenitsa with a test of the Yamaha VK Professional II snowmobile: the abbreviation VK here means “Viking”, II is an updated version. What is this device professional at?

The world of snowmobiles is as vibrant and diverse as the world of automobiles. Touring, multi-purpose, snowmobiles for deep snow, professional equipment for rescue work on mountain slopes, “athletes” and crossovers...

And the Yamaha VK Professional II is a utilitarian “truck”. But not a dull plastic trough with a stunted two-stroke engine, but rather a “tourist”: a luxurious sofa can accommodate three people, and there is a separate output on the steering wheel for connecting the electric heating of the helmet visor. And of course, heating of the throttle trigger, driver and passenger handles is already “in the base”.

There is a brake lever on the left handle: even on packed snow, a heavy Yamaha slows down effectively

The 1049 cm³ three-cylinder engine of the Genesis generation in version II was finally equipped with fuel injection, leaving the old carburetor in the past. The traction is like that of a Freightliner long-haul tractor, even if you’re dragging a sea container behind you: after all, 125 horsepower is not lying around on the road. True, the VK Professional II does not shine with high speed: using the remnants of a gray misunderstanding near Moscow, which the capital's residents call snow, we managed to move the “truck” to only 130 km/h according to the speedometer. But this is a completely predictable scenario: after all, the Viking is an expeditionary truck, and it has different functionality. The CVT transmission has a full range of multipliers to easily pull loads weighing up to 800 kilograms! Monumental tow bar, solid trunk truss...

The dashboard is perfectly readable, all information is strictly to the point

It’s not for nothing that the Viking’s power frame is made of steel: the riveted aluminum “backbones” of some competitors are simply torn to pieces when trying to drag such a load behind them. But the other side of the heavy truck’s outstanding capabilities is its curb weight of about 400 kilograms. Plus a high center of gravity and a relatively modest track, which does not make the VK II the most stable snowmobile in the world. Yamaha reacts extremely indifferently to attempts by even a hundred-kilogram rider to actively work with his own weight, so no sudden movements or near-sporting manners when taxiing - you need to drive the truck carefully.

The engine's response to the throttle trigger is still too nervous

And fuel consumption during the test exceeded 25 l/100 km - and this without breaking through snow and dragging exorbitant loads. It's good that the fuel tank capacity has increased to 44.6 liters: not a record in the class, but more than before.

Model range (Viking Professional 2, vk10d)

The “Professional” family of tracks represents typical utilitarian all-terrain vehicles. All the attributes of a good multi-purpose snowmobile, a durable steel frame combined with a powerful engine, A-link suspension and wide track - the Viking has it all. The lineup of this family includes two main variations - VK10D and VR Professional II EPS.

Both models have a 4-stroke engine with three cylinders, liquid cooling and a carburetor power system. The first all-terrain vehicle VK10D appeared in the early 2000s, almost immediately it attracted the attention of experienced riders and received many positive reviews. In 2014-2015, an updated version appeared, which received the prefix II EPS in the name. This snowmobile received a more powerful engine, an updated carburetor and power steering with improved suspension geometry. In all other respects, this is the same “Viking” as originally.

Yamaha Viking Professional universal snowmobile for professionals

Yamaha produces unique and reliable equipment, which is confirmed by the characteristics of the Viking Professional from previous models, but created with new original components and assemblies. The design of the snowmobile differs significantly from its predecessor, the Yamaha Viking 540. The VK Professional, like all developments by Japanese engineers, is designed to be reliable and durable.

The original chassis of the snowmobile is distinguished by increased dimensions compared to its predecessors. The design of the chassis allows the snowmobile to easily not only move over hard snow cover 50.8 cm deep, but also to tow another snowmobile or cargo using a powerful tow bar.

The track is wide and powerful, supported by rear suspension hinges and has sufficient flexibility. Plastic skis of the mountain type, also wide and with position adjustment. The ski track of the VK Professional is 125mm wider than its predecessor. The front independent double wishbone suspension, A-shaped, provides the snowmobile with good handling and high ground clearance.

The motor on a snowmobile, like all four-stroke engines, gives the snowmobile a fuel consumption that is 35% less than two-stroke engines, especially when moving at high speed. The engine power is enough to tow a trailer at a speed of 80 km/h. According to owner reviews, consumption is 20-25 liters per 100 km. The engine is highly efficient and pulls reliably at 8200 rpm.

The Professional has a rigid and especially durable snowmobile chassis, and some chassis parts are made by vacuum casting. Parts are made of light alloys, very durable, as they do not have microdefects. The snowmobile has wide, comfortable footrests, a large trunk under the saddle, a high windshield, and soft seats. Driving convenience is ensured by a dashboard with a liquid crystal display and powerful dual halogen headlights.

Technical specifications:

  • Length - 3266mm

  • Rear suspension ProAction Plus adjustable (travel 312.4mm)
  • Mechanical disc brake system
  • Variable clutch YVXC
  • Transmissions: high, low, reverse.

For 2012 Viking Professional the price of the snowmobile from 506 to 549 thousand rubles. The price is quite adequate for the quality and capabilities of the machine.

VK Professional is an excellent equipment for professionals.

Features of the models

Despite some differences, both Professional models have the same design. “Vikings” differ from other utilitarian trucks by their greater weight. The three elements that provide the greatest mass are:

  • durable steel frame;
  • four-stroke engine;
  • power steering.

Snowmobiles are made according to the classic design, in which the main components are located in the front of the machine. A heavy power plant combined with an equally heavy frame makes the truck less maneuverable. It is not well suited for riding on very loose snow, because only an experienced rider can cope with the control in such conditions.

Specifications

This snowmobile has quite good technical characteristics. A powerful four-stroke motor and a sturdy steel frame make it more stable on any surface. The wishbone suspension combined with a wide track allows you to overcome the most difficult trails.

Dimensions and weight

This all-terrain vehicle belongs to the class of heavy equipment, its dry weight is 355 kg. The truck weighs so much because it is based on a strong steel frame. The power steering also adds additional weight (+ 15 kg).

The intake and exhaust systems use 2 valves per cylinder, giving a total of 12 valves.

Cooling

Both Professional modifications have a liquid-cooled engine. Previously, the manufacturer used (in the VK540 model) an axial fan for these purposes. The design uses a radiator of the 8FN-12460-00 brand, which was specially developed by the company’s engineers.

Carburetor

This truck uses a modern injection-type carburetor system to meter fuel. Each cylinder has one carburetor. The earlier models are equipped with CVK40 models made by KEIHIN, while the new ones are equipped with Mikuni 41mm. Both "carbs" are made in Japan and have liquid heating.

For refueling, the manufacturer recommends using only regular, unleaded gasoline. In this case, the minimum octane number can be 86. It is optimal to use AI-92.

Price from the manufacturer

This snowmobile does not belong to the class of budget snowmobile equipment. At an official dealer, a new Viking Professional II EPS 2020 or 2022 model costs about 1,415 thousand rubles and more. In this case, you will have to place a pre-order, since the model may not be in stock.

Ask a Question

If you can’t afford a new car, you can always find a used truck. In this case, the price will depend on the year of manufacture, model, mileage, as well as the general technical condition of the vehicle.

Thus, a snowmobile from 2006–2008 will cost between 380–500 thousand rubles, and models from 2012–2013 will cost about 500–900 thousand rubles.

Owner reviews

Like any other equipment, the Yamaha Viking Professional snowmobile has different reviews from owners. Some praise the truck for its efficiency and reliability, while others criticize it for the lack of a manual starter and its too high cost. Of course, the manufacturer carefully monitors the quality of its products, so in general it breaks quite rarely.

Since this model has been in production for more than fifteen years, you can find many reviews and test drives on the Internet to familiarize yourself with the functionality in absentia and understand whether the truck is worth buying.

Maxim, Naryan-Mar:

“I have owned this snowmobile for more than two years. It’s quite a reliable technique, but the lack of a kick starter is depressing. Sometimes you start it in severe frost, but that’s not the case. Of course, I really like the economical and powerful engine and the wide gooseneck. But it is too heavy, it took a long time to get used to the controls. I’ll say right away that this is a full-fledged workhorse, and not a recreational truck.”

Egor, Krasnoyarsk:

“The car is serious, it’s clear that the Japanese approached production thoroughly. I rode it all winter, of course it drives well, but the price, like other Yamas, is overpriced. One of the disadvantages that I managed to notice is that the paint on the body wears off very quickly.”
