The CFMOTO 650 MT 2022 test began with us picking it up from the dealer. This is the newest motorcycle in the CFMOTO line. The mileage on it was 4518 km, that is, it had already been broken in a little before us, but, in fact, we got a brand new motorcycle in perfect condition. I immediately went home on a motorcycle, a distance of about 45 km (in the end I managed to cover about 100 km that day). And I would immediately like to tell you about my first impressions.

Repair and tuning

Who said that a Chinese motorcycle should break down often, but be easily repaired? The CF Moto 650NK refutes at least the first part of this stereotype. Reliable and high quality, it can serve for many years if the owner so desires. And you can repair almost anything in it, and without unjustified costs.

Repair

From a design point of view, the CF Moto 650NK is not anything complicated. If you wish, you can figure it out yourself, and if you don’t want to get your hands dirty, then motorcycle mechanics at any service center can easily handle the bike. There are no “Chinese surprises” in it; its creators were clearly guided by sound logic and the experience of Japanese competitors.

Spare parts

Local dealers usually have everything you need in stock, but some rare and expensive components will have to be purchased to order. Aliexpress is always ready to help out, where spare parts and tuning are in bulk. There are plastic and other body kit elements, but the quality varies from seller to seller. The cost is on average low, so the maintenance of the CFMoto 650 NK motorcycle does not go too deep into the owner’s pocket.

Tuning

There are a huge number of universal tuning suitable for this model. Much is suitable from the Kawasaki ER-6N, but branded “Kawasaki” tuning will cost much more than its Chinese counterparts. There is no point in investing a lot of money in improving this model; it is already good, although many bikers put a small windshield on it. This practically does not spoil the appearance of the motorcycle, and at the same time provides tolerable wind protection.

Let's go to the quarry off-road

Accordingly, after the track we went off-road to the quarry and rode there. For off-road use, for me personally (two meters tall and 95kg+ weight), the suspension was not enough. It was easy to push through at a normal pace, even on a country road with decent potholes and bumps. But the suspension is such a thing that it is usually designed for weight (usually 70-80 kg) and not for the kind of off-road travel that was in our test. So if you are not from hard enduro, and do not weigh 100kg+, then the CFMOTO 650 MT 2020 suspension will definitely be enough for you.

During the test in such conditions, the motorcycle was hit several times and fell heavily, which is surprising - the steering wheel is mega durable, did not break, did not bend... it is even more surprising when you remember that the motorcycle weighs 213 kg.

The engine also began to “drive” under these conditions from 7000 rpm.

But I managed to climb a 70-degree hill and ride on the sand without any problems (in the video that will be released soon, you can evaluate the angle of climb and what this “baby” is capable of).

By the way, when descending from this mountain I had to turn off the ABS by removing the fuse , because on the first descent the brakes did not lock at all with the ABS system activated, I had to urgently turn off the motorcycle so that the system would not interfere with the operation of the brakes.

In general, it will be enough for off-road use, but in the format if you are going on a long drive and want to go around a traffic jam in a field or get off the road and get to a picturesque place to appreciate the views, and without really slowing down.

As a result of the off-road test (the seriousness of which you will evaluate soon, in the video), I broke the silumin glass racks and EVERYTHING (!!!), but it’s not a big loss - they are original and new and cost 670 rubles each!

Advantages and disadvantages

Having become accustomed to dealing with budget small-capacity motorcycles from China, it is difficult to immediately get used to the idea that the Celestial Empire, it turns out, also produces serious motorcycle equipment. And since the CF Moto 650 NK costs comparable to its Japanese competitors, we will evaluate it completely mercilessly, without discounting the budget. Buyers who are ready to pay a third of a million rubles for a new bike have the right to demand that it matches its price.

Advantages

Flaws

  • Sloppy assembly in places. Everything is of high quality and reliable, but the welds, for example, are made powerfully, but rather crookedly.
  • Low quality paintwork. Shagreen is clearly visible on the paint due to the fact that the paint coating was applied unevenly.
  • Aluminum parts quickly become dull and lose their shine. But you can easily return it by polishing the metal and varnishing it.
  • The plastic parts are thick and durable, but poorly made. Unpolished edges and even burrs on them are striking.
  • Bad dashboard. It is difficult to see the speed on a digital speedometer while driving due to the very small size of the numbers.

Fans of extreme driving will certainly appreciate the speed characteristics of this model. Under favorable conditions and proper control, the motorcycle can reach speeds of up to 180 km/h! There is no need to fear that you will suddenly run out of fuel and have to spend time on the highway waiting for rescuers: the large gas tank holds up to 17 liters of fuel. As for the energy consumption of this model, it depends on the driving style, the quality of the road and the selected speed.

The only thing you have to adjust to is the seat height. It is 1.50 m from the floor level, which will be unusual for novice motorcyclists.

And only then I realized what’s funny, it has two modes - sport mode and touring mode. Tourign differs from sports only in that in sports it seems to remember how you drive, how sharply you open the gas, how you brake, how you accelerate, at what speed you are driving, and after about five minutes of driving it becomes in “its” mode, in in my case, aggressive, he becomes cheerful, it’s as if he remembers, programs himself. But when you switch back to touring, it starts to “vegetate”.

At the same time, fuel consumption in touring and in sports is absolutely the same.

The landing puzzled me a little (I didn’t adjust the steering wheel to suit me at first). With my height, two meters, I had to reach a little towards the steering wheel.

The Chinese know how to surprise! Copying the aforementioned Kawasaki model in many respects, they did it so well that they ended up with a very interesting bike. Dynamic, reliable and visually attractive, it is also inexpensive.

Engine

The 2-cylinder, 8-valve liquid-cooled engine was developed within the depths of a Chinese corporation. Maximum power of 70.7 hp. and a torque of 62 Nm are achieved at 8500 rpm and 7000 rpm respectively. At the same time, the engine has practically no “tops”; all thrust is concentrated in the low and middle speed range, although at around 4500 there is a noticeable pickup. The CFMoto 650NK speakers are enough for the eyes both for the city and for the highway, especially since due to the lack of wind protection at speeds above 140 km/h the pilot begins to be noticeably blown away by the headwind. The stated top speed is 180 km/h, and from 0 to 100 km/h the bike accelerates in 3.9 seconds, keeping up with Japanese sportbikes.

Transmission

The cassette 6-speed manual transmission behaves perfectly. Gears change easily, without knocking or extraneous noise, and no effort is required. No one has ever heard of problems with the transmission on this model either, so this unit can be considered reliable.

Chassis and brakes

Chinese engineers used a steel tubular frame instead of an alloy frame to reduce cost, but this increased the weight of the motorcycle. But they equipped the bike with decent brakes, installing two 300 mm brake discs on the front wheel and another 200 mm disc on the rear. Unfortunately, the ABS system was not delivered...

Electronics

This bike does not have any auxiliary electronic systems, so its electrical circuit is very simple, no more complicated than that of some Honda CB400. The most complex part is probably the Ducati injector. If any problems arise, any normal motorcycle service center will be able to sort out the electronics.

Weight and dimensions

But in fairness, it should be noted that it does not seem heavy at all due to the fact that the engine, which accounts for a noticeable share of the weight, is shifted downwards. But the dimensions of the model are small, and tall bikers (190 cm and above) may find it a bit cramped.

Controllability

The bike steers extremely easily. Almost too easy, according to some pilots, who claim that it tends to stall during tight turns at low speeds. You just have to be careful and everything will be fine, but the impressive maneuverability of the balanced Chinese naked allows it to dart between cars with ease.

Fuel consumption

With moderate driving in a mixed cycle, consumption is about 5 liters of AI-95. Some owners fill in AI-92 without any consequences, but in this matter it is better to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. And if you drive “with all your money”, squeezing everything possible out of the engine on the highway, consumption can jump to 8-8.5 liters. Although, due to the lack of wind protection, only a notorious masochist can drive for a long time at a speed of under 200 km/h.

First impressions of CFMOTO 650 MT 2022

The first thing I noticed as soon as I sat down on it and started touching and feeling it was that from the outside, in terms of the engine, it looked like a Kawasaki ruff. The second point is that there is ABS that does not turn off (I’ll tell you more about this later).

I was immediately impressed by the brakes, they are very informative and it stops very well, but for some reason the braking limit (ABS) turns on a little early. But for the majority of less experienced motorcyclists, this will be a huge plus - we brake “to the floor” and the most effective stop occurs, most importantly using the rear and front brakes at once. On the off-road, by the way, the motorcycle behaved extremely ambiguously in terms of brakes, but more on that a little later.

The second point is that when I just left the showroom, I noticed that it comes with very wide panniers as standard, which, visually, add clumsiness to it. Riding in the city in such a configuration is very problematic, because the panniers always try to get caught in the aisles of cars (fortunately, they have a cool “quick release” mechanism, which I’ll tell you about later).

As I said earlier, on the first day I rode a motorcycle for about 90-100 km and my surprise knew no bounds when at the end of the day the fuel reserve light came on (if I ride aggressively). By the way, after talking with a dealer representative when returning the motorcycle, my practice, unfortunately, was confirmed). That is, for an in-line two, an injector and a new motorcycle, this is an prohibitive consumption, even taking into account its weight of 213 kg. But nevertheless, it drained the 18 liter tank (before the reserve) without even noticing how (when operating in the most active mode).

While Chinese industry was churning out small-scale equipment in huge quantities, no one paid attention to its similarity to well-known prototypes. And why? All clones were sold mainly in the third world and the sales statistics of motorcycle grandees in the “white world” were not spoiled.

However, recently it began to seem that the Chinese were about to get their own modern “mid-sized” car. Not some kind of “solid-drawn” device, but a new model based on original drawings. And it doesn’t matter who exactly will do the engineering. After all, Chery orders the design of its cars from the Japanese studio SIVAX and the Italian Bertone, and the design of its engines from the Austrian company AVL. Why don't motorcycle companies follow the same path? And there, you see, it’s not far from the “liter”... But when last summer the first official photographs of the large first-born CFMOTO 650NK and the tourer based on it CFMOTO 650TR appeared on the Internet, it became clear that the revolution had not happened.

Guess for yourself who copied who. And the shape of the frame, and the engine, and the appearance of the suspension and brakes shout about the pedigree of the “Chinese” in the voice of photographer Lacerda from Terry Gilliam’s film “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”: “Ka-va-sa-ki!” It’s a pity that the work was not “rolled out” perfectly.

Let’s leave the traditional “feeling of quality” of Chinese plastic alone. Just like the artistic taste of the author of the external “tuning”, richly flavored with pseudocarbon, exaggerated lighting equipment and Chinese emblems, everyone has their own ideas about beauty. Personally, I had another question: how legal is such a copy?

The answer from Russian importers AWM Trade was not surprising: “That’s what we first asked the CFMOTO management. And at the same time they asked whether we would have problems with the manufacturer of the original ER-6n. They assured us that there was no need to worry... But they didn’t show us any supporting documents.”

Not surprisingly, walking around the 650NK, I recognized the unmistakable Kawasaki ER-6n from 2006. The steering wheel is moderately wide, the controls are conveniently and logically located, and the instruments are quite readable. I remember that the progenitor was considered one of the best motorcycles for beginners. Of course - with such and such a saddle height! Even the tallest driver can stand on the ground with both feet.

It's easy to get going. The clutch is quite soft and informative. As I carefully rolled along the makeshift pit lane, the 650NK idled softly, without twitching... Pit lane? Yes, the St. Petersburg circuit was chosen as the location for the Russian presentation. The Northwestern track is quite controversial, both in terms of the quality of the asphalt surface (lumpy and with poor grip) and in terms of the level of personnel (what kind of marshals are they who don’t know the purpose of the flags?), but it’s still better than pushing around a jam-packed city.

And now - banza-a-ay!

God, how familiar everything is! The parallel 649 cc “two” drives acceptably almost from the very bottom and up to the maximum 10,800 rpm. But to say that the character is even... At first the engine drives calmly, without fanaticism, then there is a noticeable burst of thrust at 8000 rpm, which stretches at most for a couple of thousand revolutions, and then there is calm again. And even with this character, there is no high-speed hysteria in it, and the sound of the engine resembles the everyday chugging of a diesel locomotive. Nevertheless, it spins up much more vigorously than the V-twins of its classmates - just have time to click through the tight gears. At the same time, it’s worth getting used to the damped throttle handle, which responds to commands with a delay, which is especially noticeable when changing the throttle and during sharp accelerations.

But, like the Japanese dad, the Chinese son cannot be called straightforward. The CFMOTO Roadster changes direction in accordance with the pilot's command: easily and naturally, even if it is absolutely not exciting. The specifics of handling are determined by the suspension, and it does not like chipped asphalt with sharp edges of potholes. That's why it didn't make any impression in terms of ride comfort. It's strange that with such an intolerant setup, the 650NK chassis cannot boast of any groovy behavior. By shifting it from side to side, you get exactly the reaction you are counting on, but the unclear feedback does not allow you to maintain the trajectory on one impulse. Fortunately, in normal situations the reactions are unambiguous, without a catch. That is, the “Chinese” was inherited approximately the same manners as the “Kawasachi” prototype possessed.

It seems that you say “ahalay-mahalay”, pay the price of a five-year-old “used” one for a new motorcycle - and... However, magic spells are in vain! The transformation of the Chinese CFMOTO 650NK into the Japanese Kawasaki ER-6n will not happen with just the power of thought. You understand this when, imitating an emergency situation, you sharply slam on the brakes. But instead of demonstrating adequate deceleration, the motorcycle “plows its face” and crushes the front suspension, depriving the wheel of contact with the asphalt. In addition, the brakes on the three cars provided for testing worked differently: on one example everything was within the genre, on the second the rear caliper jammed, and on the third the pressure in the front circuit was lost from time to time for no reason. Brrr... Well, if there is room for maneuver. And if not?.. The Chinese CST CM615 tires that the CFMOTO is equipped with are also of little use - their only merit is that they are round. Because even after a 10-minute session on the St. Petersburg “ring” they stubbornly did not want to warm up.

All this left an aftertaste, as if it had been copied, but they couldn’t fully understand how it should work. And this is understandable. Where, in a country where until recently the majority of the population rode bicycles, and where a car is still a dream of the distant future for many, should its test engineers, its tuning specialists, its suspension specialists get it? There is none of them.

Or rather, they exist: CFMOTO has 1,300 workers, of which 260 are engineers directly involved in design. But they are just learning how to do normal technique. How the whole country is learning this.

In principle, if you cannot completely cure the flaws, you can at least add predictability by replacing the tires with more grippy ones during pre-sale preparation. Of course, this will raise the price. How much? I daresay, ten to fifteen thousand at most. If we take into account the estimated cost of the motorcycle (approximately 256,000 rubles - the exact price will be known when sales start), then these additional costs do not look critical. Safety is more important!

Powerful, aggressive, representative and noticeable - these are the epithets that can be used to describe the Chinese motorcycle, which made a real splash in the car market. And no matter how much spiteful critics gossip that the model was copied from another, well-known brand, the fact remains: 650 nk found its admirers and managed to prove once again that manufacturers from the East do not waste time improving and developing their skills.

  • cubic capacity (volume) - from 150-250 cubic meters, more is possible, depending on individual preferences and driving experience;
  • weight – in practice, models weighing 70-90 kg perform best; heavier representatives take longer to turn;
  • speed – up to 150 km/h, faster transport is no longer so stable and safe;
  • engine type – two-stroke or four-stroke; the latter improves fuel consumption but also increases power, making long trips easier.

There are also specific criteria, such as design or cost. We will consider them separately. First, let's take a closer look at the key technical characteristics.

For a beginner buying his first city bike, it is better to choose a small volume, and only then move on to a more powerful model. However, it would be wise to set some restrictions. For example, the potential of a liter engine will not be revealed in heavy traffic, and it consumes a lot of fuel. Why overpay?

Let's move on to the features of the most common options.

250 cubes

An excellent solution for a “first acquaintance”. Equipment with such an engine is light, maneuverable, user-friendly and as predictable as possible. The design of the vehicle can be spectacular or aggressive.

400 cubes

A very interesting motorcycle category for the city, focused on street riding. With light weight, they can boast a power of 40-55 horsepower and rapid acceleration to 150-180 km/h, and this with economical fuel consumption. The downside is that they are produced for the Japanese market, which means they have to be ordered from there and already with mileage.

600 cubes

An option for experienced riders who feel confident on the road. And also for those who regularly take to highways and other open spaces where they can feel the potential of the engine. The models are reliable and stable, with a weight of 160-190 kg they accelerate to 220-250 km/h and impress with the power of 105-125 horsepower.

When deciding which motorcycle is best to buy for the city, you should focus on the places that you will visit regularly, as well as on your own experience. Based on this, you can decide in favor of one of the following groups.

Road

All kinds of roadsters, street fighters and other lightweight models with a lightweight frame and classic stance. They are maneuverable and therefore perform well in dense traffic conditions. Among the most interesting representatives:

  • Kawasaki ER-4N - with a 400 cc engine with 44 horsepower, accelerates to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds and reaches speeds of up to 170 km/h. Consumes on average up to 4.17 liters per hundred kilometers.
  • Ducati Scrambler 2022 - with a V-shaped injection engine and the same 400 cc.
  • Yamaha MT-07 - received recognition thanks to its spectacular appearance and torque of 68 Nm (with a power of 75 HP), available already at low speeds.

Sports

Technological, low-slung, ultra-modern appearance, ideal aerodynamics

Attention, these are not the best motorcycles for the city and the highway at once; they are only suitable for high-quality highways. Interesting options from this category are:

  • Yamaha YZF R6 - with an ABS system and enlarged brake discs, accelerates to about 0 in 3 seconds, maintaining speeds of up to 260 km/h thanks to a power of 180 HP.
  • Kawasaki NINJA 250R – With a volume of 250 cubic meters and a weight of 170 kg, it reaches “hundreds” in 7.72 seconds. Convenient for streets due to its ultra-lightness.
  • Triumph Daytona 675 - with a 3-cylinder engine, a quickshifter so you don't have to worry about grip, a track function for slipping the rear wheel.

Motards

They become the answer to the question: “Which motorcycle should I buy for the city and beyond?” These are universal all-terrain models that perform well on smooth asphalt, paving stones, dirt roads with potholes and off-road.

Among the typical representatives:

  • Honda 400XA is a powerful, yet economical model. That is why it has earned popularity and is actively exported from Japan.
  • Yamaha WR 250 X - with rigid suspension, 17-inch wheels, small cubic capacity. A distinctive feature is the weight, almost a record for the class, 136 kg, ensuring lightness and maneuverability.
  • Kawasaki Versys 650 is a modification of the ER-6, with an adjustable front fork, long suspension travel, and improved traction. Confidently behaves on any surface.

Operating CFMOTO 650 MT in the city and measuring acceleration to 100 km/h

For the city, I’ll be honest, it’s generally excellent, for the city there are no complaints. You sit high, there is enough suspension, and brakes too. The motorcycle even allows you to play around on the rear wheel, and not “powered”, but “in balance”!

The feeling from the windshield and its adjustments (before the windshield broke on the roads) even with my height (two meters), I was surprised that the fully raised windshield/glass protected almost my entire head at speed (I felt the air flow only in the top of my head). That is, for my height I need to increase the glass a little, but for most people a standard windshield/glass will be more than enough.

Cruising speed of CFMOTO 650 MT is 140-150 km/h. The maximum it could accelerate to was 192 km/h , then it “screams” and simply does not accelerate (I even lay down on the steering wheel and tank, for greater aerodynamics). And even if we are talking about starting with someone in the city, then his acceleration to 100 km/h is 4.9 seconds, which is quite enough.

By the way, about overclocking - we measured it with the most modern equipment at the moment, and in the photo below you can see the number of attempts and the results of each. The only negative is fuel consumption (well, as a minus...our operation is in the most active mode
