"Drozd" motorcycle: description, characteristics, features and reviews

The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird is a long-range strategic reconnaissance aircraft known for its record speed of more than three times the speed of sound. Despite the ingenious and unique technical solutions, in 1998 the SR-71 lost its relevance and was honorably retired. Two years earlier, his “little brother” was born, who also set a speed record, but is still on combat duty. PDF version

Black suits motorcycles. Unlike more frivolous flowers, it symbolizes seriousness of intentions, age and experience, mystery, evil, nothingness. This is precisely the grim seriousness that emanates from the Honda Superblackbird, created in 1996 to achieve strategic superiority over the speed king of the time - the Kawasaki ZX-11. Since then, the recognizable appearance of the CBR1100XX has remained almost unchanged.

Honda CBR1100XX Superblackbird running boards – with rubber inserts

The design of the “thrush” is civil and practical by the standards of modern hyperbikes. The bike is equipped with footpegs with rubber inserts, a large fairing and high glass, powerful headlight optics and a central stand. They even installed a classic fork, not an inverted one. Which, in a tourist context, can easily be considered an advantage. The 2004 copy, compared to the first generation of “drozds”, in addition to less significant changes, received an electronic fuel injection system and an immobilizer, a digital dashboard, inertial supercharging and an illogical reduction in power by 12 hp.

Honda CBR1100XX Superblackbird brakes - combined

The black bird combination braking system matches the overall concept of the motorcycle. It is not radically racing, but on the contrary, it was designed for ease of everyday use and for pilots with little experience. On the motorcycle being tested, the owner installed xenon, a luxurious tuning saddle with a “step,” protective sliders and a Givi case. This equipment has further shifted the once radical “hypersport” class apparatus towards comfortable high-speed tourism.

Honda CBR1100XX Superblackbird dashboard with LCD displays displays a full set of parameters except the number of the gear engaged

The instrument panel is arranged according to the canons of sports motorcycles: a central dial tachometer, an LCD speedometer, the same digital odometer, the usual trip meters, a thermometer, a clock and even a fuel level scale. Unfortunately, there is no indicator of the gear number on the device. But an engine with a volume of almost 1200 cubic meters is unlikely to require frequent switching from the pilot, so there is no great need for it. But aesthetic pleasure from tidying is guaranteed.

Honda CBR1100XX Superblackbird is equipped with an immobilizer

The immobilizer quickly recognized the chip in the depths of the ignition key, and the engine started with half a turn. The instruments came to life and glowed with a pleasant orange light, and the blue-white xenon plasma flared up and slowly began to flare up. Accelerating in first gear with the sound of increasing speed, reminiscent of the noise of a jet turbine, instantly brought out a huge smile.

Honda CBR1100XX Superblackbird accelerates smoothly and energetically

Some believe that large displacement and powerful engines are a corrupting excess, unnecessary and even harmful. Such people, like those who avoid wine, gambling and the company of pretty ladies, are either seriously ill or secretly hate others. The acceleration developed by the Thrush is very pleasant and energetic, but at the same time soft and controlled. If you fully open the gas in any gear except first, you don’t get the feeling that you’ve just made the biggest mistake of your life and a few milliseconds later a bloody reckoning will come. Instead of the familiar thought to owners of liter superbikes, “Baaalin!...” the brain sounds “Ummmmm... High!”

The reason for the non-explosive nature lies in the significant mass of the rotating parts of the engine and the “black bird” itself. According to the manufacturer, the engine weighs 83 kg. This is almost 25 kg more than the weight of a liter jixer engine. It is logical to assume that the blackbird crankshaft can be used for bodybuilding.

The bottomless torque and decent power developed by the engine, together with a well-functioning gearbox, easily accelerated the motorcycle to 260 km/h. But even at such a high speed, there is no feeling that the personal guardian angel flying nearby will soon have a lot of work to do. The motorcycle holds its trajectory stably, like a sharp knife cuts through a dense air stream and does not show the slightest hint of nervousness. At the same time, excellent wind protection and a saddle-step allow the pilot to ride completely relaxed.

The Honda CBR1100XX Superblackbird trunk slightly impairs handling

Having reduced the speed to legal values, you suddenly realize that it is not necessary to switch “down”. The elasticity of the engine is so great that in sixth gear it pulls decently in the speed range from 60 to 260 km/h. But don't expect it to have the character of modern sports cars. Due to the heavy crankshaft and other rotating parts, there is no “direct connection” between the throttle and the rear wheel, so valued by racers.

The engine reacts to the opening of the throttle valves roughly and with a slight but sensitive delay, which is why there is a feeling of some primitiveness of its reflexes. It’s as if Pithecanthropus Gogi had just mentally “cooked” you with a club made from petrified mammoth feces, and now, pleased with himself, without unnecessary ceremony or haste, he hangs the carcass by the hands for further dissection.

Honda CBR1100XX Superblackbird puts significant strain on your hands at low speeds

At “subsonic” speeds, despite the relatively high clip-ons, the load on the hands turned out to be significant. This does not fit with the tourist component of the “thrush” and is more typical of purebred sportbikes. Owners who regularly use such motorcycles in the city make sense to think about installing adjustable touring clip-ons. Compared to the arms, the legs of “drosophiles” do not experience any discomfort and will endure a long journey without difficulty or rest. As for the “loaves”, thanks to the tuning saddle, a rare sports tourer will be able to compete in terms of comfort with this example of the Honda Superblackbird.

“Drozd” allows the pilot to ride in a suspended position with amazing comfort

I was especially surprised by the comfort in corners. The relative position of the saddle, tank, clip-ons and footpegs creates an ideal hanging position for pilots about 180 cm tall. The inner side of the elbow rests comfortably on the tank, one “bunch” hangs in the air, the other sits regal in the saddle, resting against the step. The third point of support - the foot on the footrest - securely fixes the pilot, allowing him to concentrate not on landing and holding the body, but on controlling the motorcycle.

Honda CBR1100XX Superblackbird: journey into the ditch

The “superbird” pendant is quite high quality. If you don’t try to squeeze more than 70% of its capabilities out of a motorcycle, then you won’t be able to find flaws in its operation. However, when driving vigorously on an imperfect road, the bike begins to get “nervous”, and the impression of the fork and shock absorber is spoiled. It's as if they don't have enough stroke length to absorb bumps effectively. At the end of compression, the fork becomes too stiff, which can cause even small potholes to cause the bike to wobble or wobble in a corner. Small changes to the compression damping could eliminate this issue, but unfortunately the blackbird fork is non-adjustable.

Handling of the Honda CBR1100XX Superblackbird has improved significantly after removing the pannier

The pannier additionally spoils handling in turns, but, fortunately, it can be removed before active “flights”. It is not the mass of the case that has a greater influence on the behavior of the bike, but its aerodynamic resistance. In any case, without a “trunk” the motorcycle turns much more stable. The blackbird mirrors work quite well. But they do not provide a panoramic view, so you should not neglect turning your head to directly observe dead zones.

Rear brake Honda CBR1100XX Superblackbird

A separate story is about combined brakes. Not very experienced pilots with symptoms of laziness and an exaggerated faith in technology will certainly like them. Because they allow you to worry less about the distribution of braking force and the risk of blocking the wheel. But experienced aerobatics will be disappointed. Apart from the usual shortcomings of automatic systems that try to “think” for the driver, they noticeably roughen the feel of the brakes. When braking aggressively, it is difficult to assess how close to the grip limit a particular wheel is - the front brake handle is almost devoid of information. For the same reason, it is not possible to precisely modulate the braking force depending on changing external conditions.

It is difficult for the pilot to trust the Honda CBR1100XX Superblackbird in corners due to less pronounced weight transfer during braking

The worst situation is when entering corners. Due to less pronounced weight transfer and increased unsprung mass, the front tire's grip on the asphalt suffers. Therefore, at the most critical point of the turn, the pilot cannot completely trust the motorcycle and, to some extent, feels like a passenger.

Trying to position the Blackbird in today's world of hyperbikes and sports tourers can be confusing. Because classmates from other manufacturers are often sportier and more comfortable than the “black bird”. But unexpectedly for Honda, which shines with its ability to build faceless motorcycles, the “thrush” turned out to have nuclear potential. This capability is disguised as an intercontinental ballistic missile converted into a civilian airliner conversion. But despite his peaceful appearance, the veteran is still fit for service.

Anton Barsukov, photo by Viktor Akilov and the author

The author thanks Mikhail “Minus” Gaev from the Raven motorcycle club for providing the motorcycle for testing.

Owner's opinion.

The motorcycle is great. I have ridden it on thousands of kilometer trips many times. It is equally pleasant to drive at speeds of 15 km/h and 215 km/h, and from 15 km/h you can accelerate in 6th gear. I really like the teleportation effect: I saw a window, took aim, passed down (optional!) and in a moment you were already there. Despite all the “hyperbike” qualities, he forgave many mistakes, and the combined brakes were very useful for my height of 191 cm. The motorcycle is effectively settled by the entire body. So you only need to use your foot during emergency braking. It's a pity that Honda hasn't released a worthy successor to the Drozd.

Fight for the championship

The model was produced from 1996 to 2007. Honda created it in contrast to the creation of one of its main competitors. Before the appearance of the Drozd, the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-11 was recognized as the fastest among production motorcycles. The ambitious plans of the developers involved creating a bike that would surpass the Ninja in speed.

This dream has come true. “Black Bird” could really rush along the highway at a speed of almost 290 km/h. However, in 1999, this record was broken by another Japanese - the legendary Hayabusa. Its maximum speed was 312 km/h. Later, a new hero appeared, displacing Hayabusa. In 2005, it was surpassed by the Kawasaki ZZR 1400, which still holds the championship today. But at present, “Drozd” is a motorcycle that is still included in the list of the fastest.

Legendary name

Drozd Honda CBR 1100 XX or Super Blackbird, in English - blackbird. It was produced from 1996 to 2007. It accelerates to 290 km/h. The name did not come from the bird, but from the fast American military aircraft Lockheed SR-71 with a jet engine, which was popularly nicknamed “Blackbird” because of its black color and external resemblance to the bird. The plane was very fast, its maximum speed was about 3500 km/h. At one time, the plane aroused admiration among everyone for its appearance, speed and climb.

Pages of history

The Honda CBR1100XX Blackbird model began production in 1996. She immediately won many fans. In 1998, the company carried out a small modernization by changing the thermostat housing. A year later, the Drozd motorcycle underwent its first major update. Instead of carburetors, the model received PGM-FI electronic fuel injection. The inertial charging system made it possible to increase the maximum engine power to 164 hp. With.

The new reconfigured combined brake system is responsible for perfect distribution of forces between the rear and front circuits. The tank capacity has also increased - from 22 to 24 liters. The radiator became more massive, and instead of seven clutch discs, the bike received 9. Drozd motorcycles of this and subsequent years of production have a power of 164 hp. With.

In 2001, the designers equipped the bike with an electronic dashboard. The shape of the windshield has been modernized, which ensures comfort at high speeds. The next year, 2002, was marked by a reconfiguration of the injection system, which began to comply with new environmental emission standards. From now on, the Honda Drozd motorcycle began to produce 152 hp. With. power at 119 Nm of torque. Soon the company began to gradually phase out production. In 2003, it stopped being supplied to the US markets, and in 2007, production was completely discontinued.

Appearance

If you take a quick look at the Drozd, the motorcycle will seem like a typical representative of the sports class. However, the manufacturer positions it as a “sport-tourist” model. You can not only drive it on the highway, but also go on a long journey. A comfortable pilot position, excellent wind protection, and the ability to install panniers - all this is conducive to long trips. Many Drozd owners gravitate more towards single races. Traveling in a convoy for a long time on such a fast unit can be difficult.

Regarding comfort

Drozd Honda is not as comfortable as a road bike. But unlike a sportbike, it has a more upright seating position - the tank sticks out a lot and when you lean towards the steering wheel, you immediately rest against the tank, while your back and arms are unloaded, which allows you to travel long distances without much strain. The saddle is semi-soft, one-piece for the driver and passenger.

On the Super Blackbird you can hang all sorts of cases, bags and everything you need on a long journey.

The target audience

“Drozd” is a motorcycle that fits perfectly into the pace of a large modern city. It was developed for those who like to drive along deserted night streets. Even long-term riding at top speeds is quite acceptable for this bike. The manufacturer honestly warns about the frisky character of the Drozd; even its name refers us to flights and conquered peaks. If this is the type of riding you like, this might be your option. It will also appeal to those who not only have to drive along the highway, but also maneuver around the city, avoiding traffic jams, braking and again rushing forward at traffic lights, driving along narrow curved streets.

At the same time, we should not forget the following: like most large cars, Drozd will require considerable skill. He is heavy, but agile. You can't call him clumsy. With good handling and stability, which manifests itself even on turns, the motorcycle requires a certain level of skill from the pilot. Any vehicle with an engine of this size rarely becomes the first, according to experienced bikers, you need to grow to the “liter”. “Drozd” is more often chosen by those who have already driven 600 and 800 cars.

Guys, let me tell you something.;) In a wild and hostile universe like ours, there are only three things you can rely on: Your brains. Your bros. And your bike. Helmets on the head. Time to rock out and rock out! © Jeff Scott Soto - Biker Mice From Mars It's early Sunday morning. You wake up quickly and run to the TV. Here they are! Rocker mice from Mars! Cool. Very cool. Unrealistically cool peppers on cool bikes, extinguishing enemies with packs. "Damn it. I want a motorcycle!” thought little 6-year-old me. A childhood dream was firmly lodged in my brain. The number of cockroaches grew, problems increased, but the thought “I want a motorcycle” was firmly lodged on one shelf. Childhood and adolescence passed and eventually I entered adulthood. With her problems. However, the dream (one of two) has stayed with me throughout my life. Now I understand how good it is that I didn’t buy a motorcycle at the age of 20-25, otherwise it would have rotted in the ground long ago. I still wonder how I even managed to live to be 27 years old (at the time of buying the motorcycle). According to my calculations, I should have already flown to the next world at least 3 times (from what I could remember). Well, better late than never (in both senses), so the choice of a motorcycle came up. I didn't understand why people advise starting with YBR125 or similar. It doesn’t move, and anyway, I’m a great racer and a cool guy after all, it’s not my status to dissect on a thimble. A joke with a grain of truth, it was decided to take the liter sport for the following reasons: 300 km/h.;) The goal was to reach 300 km/h in 3 months. I had to strive for something, not just ride. Saving. I couldn't afford to buy a new motorcycle every year and move up like many 125-400-600-1000. And in general this is stupid. The motorcycle still needs to be sold and there is a real chance to continue riding at the same capacity for a couple more seasons. That's what I thought. As it turned out later, this was indeed the case. I've seen people sell motorcycles for 2 seasons. Or they give away good motorcycles for next to nothing. 3. Tourism. I wanted to unscrew the handle and find myself in a different place in a couple of hours. Our city has very good roads, especially on the highways. 4. Of course, show off. The first motorcycle and immediately a liter of sport. Oh the vanity 5. Overall build quality. Stopping a liter requires more than just good brakes. Need great brakes! All parts are stronger and more durable. I had no doubt that I would get into an accident. This is a way to save money. Well, the last reason. However, the most important thing is what led me to the final decision to take up literary sports. If I survive and skate for 3 years on the liter, I will get 3 years of experience on the liter. On one motorcycle, I will feel it like myself and I won’t have to get used to a new one every time. Well, who among us has not dreamed of “that same motorcycle for life.” The owners of Hayabusa, who took it as their first motorcycle and ride it to this day, will especially understand me.

The first stereotype overcome me was smoking guides. And he was like “everything is f***ing except Honda.” They say that Honda has super-reliable motorcycles and in general Kawasaki is very expensive, but Suzuki doesn’t work. Blah blah blah. Of course, there was no one to explain it to. I don’t know if this is true, but in general I don’t care. Honda is Honda. I didn’t ask any questions, because I had read a lot of slop towards newbies asking “I want a liter of sports, what do you recommend?” The first candidate was VTR1000 Firestorm . For some reason he didn't interest me. However, all reviewers recommended it even for beginners. The second candidate was 1000rr Fireblade . Oh, those firestorms and razors. Marketers don't get their bread for nothing. I wonder how many razors were bought just because I liked the name?) I didn’t have enough money for a razor. The third candidate is 1100xx Blackbird . And this motorcycle won me over. The latest Honda motorcycle created according to the concept of “speed for speed’s sake.” A sport-tourist as big as an airplane. What a dream! 164 horses (less than 100 - Passengers won’t understand), a tourist and a maximum speed of 300 km/h. Perfect. As it turned out later, his maximum speed was 325 only according to the speedometer. In reality, he doesn’t go more than 297. The motorcycle is very comfortable and responsive. Its weight is not felt at all. Okay, first things first. The motorcycle was ordered through an intermediary from Japan. ⅘ points according to the assessment sheet. Mileage 25 thousand. Carbovy 1997. How could this happen that a 20 year old motorcycle has only 25 thousand miles on it? I don't know, but it wasn't interesting to me. What is 25 thousand for a blackbird? Something in the break-in area. No, the mileage was not twisted. Before the end of the season, I measured the compression and it was 14.4-14.5. This is compression of the new engine. Agree, not bad for a 20 year old motorcycle? The motorcycle arrived on my day off. Later I understood where to look and was already able to assess the condition of the motorcycle. Not perfect, but very good. On the same day I bought full equipment. Since I didn’t have a license, they took him on a trailer. For anyone to ride it other than me is disgusting, this is my motorcycle and only I will ride it! Not having traveled even a kilometer, the motorcycle fell out of the trailer in a turn and was dragged along the asphalt. Either it was tied poorly, or... I don’t know. In general, on the very first day the motorcycle had an accident without me.

It's funny. It's really funny. “Well, this is probably a hint that we need to finish our training and then he will allow you to ride on him.” The guy who was carrying the motorcycle restored it. There was no point in shouting at him, and I didn’t feel any anger. “Whatever is not done is for the better,” perhaps that’s all I could say. It took me a long time to get my license. Either the rain was canceled or work was canceled. The first time I just didn't pass. The motorcycle was restored faster than I received my license. What kind of schools do we have in the city? I'll tell you completely. “Here’s a motorcycle, this is a snake, this is a figure eight, press the clutch like this, the first one is down, the rest are up.” Literally. The entire instruction took 10 minutes. And then you are left to your own devices. Well, the topic of training in general is quite extensive, but that’s not what we’re talking about. I left at night around 4 am. Without rights. I rode around the city, learning signs. What is the chance of meeting our mountain brothers in a lowered Priora at 4 in the morning who will want to race with you? Bingo. After half an hour I got tired of just driving around the city. My first 100 km/h. Accelerating the blackbird to 100 turned out to be as easy as shelling pears. Back and forth. I drove around the city. I didn't understand the buzz. It’s so simple, where is the promised adrenaline? Where is the feeling of freedom and so on that was promised upon purchase?

Maybe 100 is not enough for such a feeling? It took me an hour to pluck up the courage. In total, after an hour and a half I was already flying under 200. One-two-three... Some kind of bullshit? Where's the fun, huh?? Where is the fear and sense of danger? Deceivers! There is no thrill in flying 200. I went home upset. There is a long straight ahead. “Well, the last time is 200, it’s still on the way.” You can see the result in the video. like this. “It’s too early for you to ride me, learn first,” as the blackbird seemed to tell me. I found the motorcycle 50 meters from the accident site. He came up, picked it up and went to park it. The next day I went riding again. Before I could drive away from the house, the traffic police stopped me at a traffic light. at 3:30 am! People can't sleep. The motorcycle was accepted and sent to a parking lot because I did not have a category “A” license. I had to pay a good amount of money to pick him up from there. Took away. Restored. I no longer rode without a license. Got my license. The first week I rode only at night. I got used to the motorcycle, to the road, to the handling in general. When I went out into the general traffic during the day, I finally got a burst of adrenaline. For 30 minutes! And then everything became boring and gray. As for the thrush. I don't regret taking it at all. I have nothing to compare it to other than the YBR125 (10 hours) and the Flame 200 (10 hours at school). This is a really cool motorcycle. It rides like it's on rails, in any gear and at any speed. He's reliable. Ultra-reliable (as was revealed in subsequent accidents). The throttle is responsive. I don't like to twist the brush. 1-3mm is enough to accelerate to 60-100kmh. This is wonderful. No unnecessary movements. I like the brakes, but again there is nothing to compare them to. Honda's CBS system, I think, helped me a lot in some aspects, and in general I think that it is better than ABS. My thrush is carb. There is nothing to break there, once at the end of the season I had to do synchronization and clean the carbs, after another accident, apparently everything went wrong. After 2 months I had the courage to push 260 km/h on the highway. Since then I stopped driving in the city. At all. I stopped being interested in this. I started driving like a pensioner and generally became nauseous. 30-50 mph, everything according to the rules, written and unwritten. Almost all traffic lights in our city have timers. Every 100-300m. There's no point in racing. And there is no need to break it, I proved to myself that I am fast enough. And I didn’t care about the opinions of others. For the same reason, I've never been to a biker party or lookout. I bought a motorcycle to ride, not to stand still. My motorcycle will not forgive me if it stands still. In 2 months I covered 5 thousand km. It didn’t seem like much, but I had limited funds, and this beast guzzles a lot of gas. Speaking of the accident. One day I went to practice bent turns. Thank you Kate Codd. This is what usually happens when a fool prays to God. Unfortunately, the moment of the accident was not captured, it was accidentally deleted (Sony HDR camera, some kind of armored one). 130 mph in a turn. We flew 60 meters through the bushes, the motorcycle braked against a tree, and my head hit it. I caught the arrival in the form of birds and bright colors. As a result, he escaped with a broken eyebrow. This is what happens when you are fully equipped. These are the consequences of an accident

I've run out of money. There was nothing to restore the motorcycle with. This usually happens when you are from the regions and have an average salary and you have invested 70+ thousand in money in 2 months. Somehow I restored it and started driving. No tidy, no headlights. Without anything at all. And I liked it. Yes, it’s more comfortable to drive with plastic. And acceleration is easier. However, here it is - hardware, an ugly massive engine, a hefty frame. An excellent option for a streetfighter. Why do I need a speedometer? I drive exactly at the speed that is needed at the moment. It's not fast or slow, it's not fast enough or too slow. I determined the speed by the vibration of the motorcycle. Restore or make a streetfighter? the price was the same and I made a choice towards the street. As a result, only the engine and frame will remain from the motorcycle. In the meantime he is like this

I discovered gymkhana (we don’t have X( ) in our city at the end of the season, but so far I’ve only managed to tilt the motorcycle up to 40-45 degrees, then the wheels start to break and fall. Maybe it’s worth changing the tires. Now I’m waiting for +15 at night and then uhhhhh , wait for me in the parking lots of shopping centers. In total, during the first season I fell 6 times. I didn’t break anything. Thanks to the full equipment, including the tortoiseshell (under the jacket) and knees and the whole thing on the overalls. You sweat like in the OZK, but it's worth it - a slight bruise on the hip and a broken eyebrow. And lastly. Is it worth recommending litersport to a beginner? As a survivor by pure luck - no. If you are frostbitten like me, for years you have trained yourself for self-control and suppressing fear and the instinct of self-preservation, litersport is contraindicated for you from any angle. It won’t be difficult for you to unscrew the handle. You don’t need a lot of brains at all, but the lack of driving skills, braking and normal motorcycle school will work against you. I survived only thanks to luck. Don’t repeat my mistakes. I have no complaints about the motorcycle, This is an awesome bike and I'm completely happy with it. Anyone who advises taking a litresport or any cubic capacity is making a typical survivor’s mistake (search on YouTube). Someone says “it doesn’t matter what the cubic capacity is, the main thing is the brakes in the head.” In some ways they are right. But I! I know you! I know because I'm the same way myself. I’m still not scared either at 60 km/h or at 200 km/h (without a windshield, it feels completely different). However, the difference is in the price of the fall. I was lucky, but will you be lucky? And further. Since I don't have brakes, I use the engine to brake. ;)

PS I have nothing to do with Jet00CBR (handsome guy, lots of information). Nick is 8 years old and comes from Rocket Boots Xtreme from World of Warcraft based on the principle “it doesn’t matter how strong the enemy is if he can’t catch you” P.S2. Kagi - damn it, you're really cool, you give more grips. I enjoyed watching all your videos, I agree with many things. P.S3. I recommend the soundtrack from Biker Mice from Mars. I'm actually shocked that such a high-quality sound was recorded for a simple children's cartoon. Those who know English will also get a kick out of the words.

Features of behavior

As one would expect from such a device, it quickly picks up speed and shows considerable stability. At the start, the blackbird easily outperforms not only most sports bikes, but also many cars of the same class. It’s not for nothing that he was considered the fastest in the world for so long. Many owners consider the operation of the brakes to be an important point. It has 2 discs in front and one in the back. A heavy bike slows down quite quickly. If desired, of course, you can install ABS on this motorcycle.

Competition with Kawasaki

Since 1990, the fastest sports tourer has been the Kawasaki ZZR1100 (for America ZX-11 Ninja), its top speed is 282 km/h.

To bypass Kawasaki, Honda created a competitor in 1996 - the CBR 1100 XX with the Super Blackbird prefix, which is associated with the supersonic aircraft - the Blackbird. It was a successful marketing move.

The Honda blackbird came out lighter, more aerodynamically designed and stronger, it had 153 hp. versus 147 hp ZX-11 Ninja, but it beat Kawasaki's record by only 8 km/h.

Technical features

"Drozd" - a motorcycle, the characteristics of which are given in the table, has a number of features.

Engine In-line, 4 cylinders
Frame Spatial, aluminum
Engine volume (working), cm3 1137
Cooling Liquid
Base, mm 1490
By saddle, mm 809
Curb weight, kg 254
Acceleration to hundreds, sec. 2,8

In appearance, the motorcycle seems like a heavy truck. In fact, its dry weight is 223 kg. Some people start tuning after purchase, trying to reduce weight. By the way, this idea apparently came to the manufacturer himself. After all, on the basis of “Drozd”, a naked bike was produced for quite a long time, differing only in its skin (and weight, respectively).

Another noteworthy aspect is fuel consumption. It is quite small for a motorcycle in this class. Get ready for the Drozd to consume an average of 5.9 liters on the highway. per hundred. Of course, this figure largely depends on the speed at which you will move. When cruising at 180 km/h, the motorcycle’s appetite will increase to 7-8 liters.

Tuning options

An irresistible desire to improve even the best sometimes visits every biker. The most common alterations that Drozd most often undergoes are the following:

  • Heated grips.
  • Xenon in optics.
  • Modernization of the skin, “nakedization”.
  • Installation of ABS.
  • Removing glass.
  • Painting.
  • Removing the passenger seat.

Prices

If you are planning to purchase a bike of this model, most likely you will not be able to find a new one due to the fact that its production has been completely discontinued. But the secondary market is saturated with completely viable units. “Blackbird” is a motorcycle that was produced for the United States of America and European countries. Therefore, it gets to our secondary from there. The absence of rides on the roads of our Motherland will add a lot to the price, but the technical condition of the bike in this case will be better. The price also depends on the year of manufacture: the younger the motorcycle, the higher the figure. Experts say that you can buy a technically sound Drozd motorcycle, the price of which is approximately 3.5-4 thousand dollars.
