All-terrain vehicle Sokol ✅: swamp vehicle, ATV Pro, breakdowns

The Sokol ATV is a domestic know-how, developed and created from various components of other vehicles by Novosibirsk resident Alexey Pozdeev. Local climatic and natural conditions dictate their conditions, so for movement you need a very powerful, heavy all-terrain vehicle. These are the characteristics that the Sokol ATV has. A home-made vehicle has a relatively reasonable cost (500-750 thousand rubles), and at the same time surpasses analogues in performance characteristics.

Several models compete with the all-terrain vehicle:

  • Arctic Cat 1000 I GT. This is a powerful single-seat branded all-terrain vehicle that can be purchased at a price of 650 thousand rubles. The engine capacity is 951 cc. cm. Significantly higher in cost than the domestic design, this ATV is inferior in terms of cross-country ability in extreme off-road conditions.
  • Can-Am Renegade 1000 XXC. This is a powerful enduro quad that is also suitable for cross-country. Its cost is even higher than that of the previous model, and amounts to 719 thousand rubles. The engine has a volume of 976 cc. cm, and its power is 82 liters. With.
  • Polaris Sportsman 800 Big Boss 6x6. This ATV is inferior in power to the Sokol, but its cost exceeds the domestic model - 630 thousand rubles. This vehicle has an 800cc engine. cm.

Device and design features

The history of technology development began more than 10 years ago, when Alexey Pozdeev began assembling a prototype of a machine capable of moving over rough terrain. The first modification was equipped with a space frame made of steel pipes, which houses an inline 4-cylinder engine from a Toyota Vitz. With a working volume of 997 cm³, the unit developed 69 hp. and was characterized by increased elasticity (thanks to the use of a variable valve timing system). An automatic transmission with several operating modes was also borrowed from Vitz.

The snow and swamp-going vehicle developed speeds of up to 80 km/h on hard ground, but the designer considered the traction characteristics to be low. The next prototype was equipped with a Toyota 1NZ-FE gasoline in-line engine, which featured a cylinder volume increased to 1497 cm³ and developed a power of 109 hp. With. The power plant with an automatic transmission was removed from the “donor” - a Toyota Vitz passenger car. The motor is characterized by increased up to 11 units. compression ratio allowing the use of gasoline with an octane rating of 95 and higher. Later, the modernized Sokol Pro swamp rover was released.

Torque is transmitted by cardan shafts to solid axles from Suzuki crossovers, which are mounted on modified leaf springs from the Gazelle light-duty truck. Elements with hinges were excluded from the suspension design, which had a negative impact on handling, but increased the reliability of the chassis. The absence of protruding arms allows you to move along forest roads without the risk of parts being torn off due to impacts on logs or cobblestones lying on the ground.

Hydraulic power steering and pump are mounted on the engine. Instead of a standard car steering wheel, motorcycle-type levers were used, which required modification of the gearbox. The all-terrain vehicles retain disc brakes with a hydraulic drive and a vacuum booster. The designer offers the installation of OI-47 tires from trucks; it is possible to use IP-184 tires (differing in a tread width reduced to 400 mm). The outer diameter of the wheels does not depend on the width of the treadmill and is 1100 mm.

Constructive

They all seem to be the same, but they are all different in some way. As they say, “the devil is in the details.” Therefore, the search for the best design, the best equipment and the most profitable package continues, and this is facilitated by increased competition.

The design of such ATVs is approximately the same:

All-terrain vehicle frame

There is a spatial frame on which all other elements are fixed.

suspension .

The engine is usually used TOYOTA 1NZ-FE. It is naturally aspirated, with a volume of 1.5 liters and a power of 109 hp.

The engine is a contract one, with low mileage. This choice was dictated by the desire to reduce the price of the all-terrain vehicle, because if a new engine had been installed, the price of the all-terrain vehicle would have been completely different. And the engine’s service life allows you to drive it without problems for many, many years to come.

The gearbox is original, automatic, Toyota. Bridges from a Suzuki Jimny car.

The all-terrain vehicle has a “motorcycle” seating position, as does the installed motorcycle handlebar . These two factors are what make such all-terrain vehicles similar to ATVs. But the use of more powerful units in the design of all-terrain vehicles provides much more compelling arguments in terms of overcoming off-road conditions.

Tires use low pressure. The large volume of air contained in them allows the all-terrain vehicle to confidently float on the water. They use both factory tires from Avtoros and Arctictrans companies, as well as cheaper tires from trucks.

Engine exhaust gases are used to inflate tires. The large engine capacity allows you to pump up a large wheel in just a few seconds.

These all-terrain vehicles differ in details and differences in configuration.

To avoid confusion, let's collect such all-terrain vehicles on a separate page, in a single list.

Major breakdowns and repairs

Since the equipment is created using parts from disassembled used cars, breakdowns are associated with failure of the power unit and transmission mechanisms. On motors, the cables leading to the sensors may break. If the catalytic converter is retained, an error may occur (when refueling with low-quality fuel). But with regular maintenance and timely replacement of process fluids, the power plant and transmission operate reliably.

Owners criticize Sokol series vehicles for poor handling, since the rear axle differential is fixed in one position. When operating on hard ground, tire wear accelerates, and increased loads on the transmission can destroy gears and driveshafts. If parts break down, it becomes difficult to purchase spare parts, since the units are borrowed from Toyota cars created for the Japanese domestic market.

Due to the lack of a closed cabin, it is difficult to move around on an ATV in winter; owners install homemade electric heating on the seat and steering handles. The manufacturer did not provide for the installation of a floor in the cabin on either side of the seat. When carrying additional cargo, elements may fall on the rear axle drive shaft or the heated exhaust system muffler. Car owners carry out their own modifications by installing shields made of corrugated aluminum sheet.

Author's ATV Sokol

Russia, with its characteristic natural conditions and the almost complete absence in some regions of what can at least with some stretch be called a road network, is one of the most suitable places for operating ATVs. Moreover, mass-produced equipment is not always able to cope with the tasks that residents of the Russian outback have to solve. And then the talented craftsmen with whom our country is so rich get down to business. Thanks to their efforts, cars are born that, frankly speaking, are difficult to compare with the models sold in motorcycle dealerships. For example, the Sokol ATV.

All-terrain vehicle Baikal-4x4

The all-terrain vehicle is produced in Irkutsk . The price for the basic package is 700 thousand rubles . The basic equipment is rich: heated handles, front trunk with sides, rear trunk with sides, front and rear bumpers with towbars, front and rear LED optics, LED chandelier (beam).

Radical solution

For Alexey Pozdeev, who created the Sokol ATV, Novosibirsk and its surroundings are a familiar habitat. You can make your way through the forests, swamps and salt marshes surrounding the city on elk or deer. Having decided that such a method of transportation clearly does not correspond to modern realities, the author of the project developed a car capable of traveling on the most difficult off-road conditions. For this purpose, we had to abandon many technical solutions familiar to modern all-terrain vehicles. The Sokol ATV, photos of which are posted on many websites, is essentially an extreme vehicle. It seems that mass-produced models cannot compete with it when moving over rough terrain.

Of course, when working on the project, its author did not manufacture the components and assemblies himself, but took ready-made parts as a basis, albeit making certain changes and modifications to some of them.

Engine

In the first version of the ATV, a 1SZ-FE engine was used as its power unit along with an automatic transmission from a Toyota Vitz with a displacement of 996 cc. cm., having four cylinders and developing a power of 70 hp. With. Cooling is liquid. Its capabilities were sufficient to confidently accelerate the all-terrain vehicle to a speed of 80 km/h. However, as quite often happens, after extensive testing this seemed not enough, and a version of the Falcon appeared, equipped with a 1NZ-FE engine with a displacement of 1496 cc. cm and power 109 l. With. It was also borrowed from the Toyota Vitz.

As a result, the maximum speed remained the same, but, thanks to the torque, which increased from 94 to 144 Nm, the dynamics and traction characteristics increased significantly.

Transmission and suspension

In an effort to ensure maximum protection of the units when driving over rough terrain and to increase the cross-country ability of his brainchild, the author of the project decided to abandon the suspension of an independent design. The ATV was installed on continuous axles from the popular Japanese SUV Suzuki Jimni. But even the capabilities of these operationally proven units seemed insufficient to the developer. The transmission received a rigid permanent center lock, and the rear axle differential was tightly welded. It is clear that this did not have a very favorable effect on handling, but cross-country ability has increased significantly. At the same time, the front axle is still switchable. To do this, it was necessary to make special hubs of a hermetically sealed design. Along with the axles, hydraulic brakes also migrated to the all-terrain vehicle.

The suspension is made as simple as possible. Its design uses springs and silent blocks from the GAZ-3302 Gazelle, and there are no parts susceptible to damage, such as additional levers, rods and stabilizers. As a result, even if there are logs or stones under the belly of the ATV, the risk of breakdowns is minimized. Reviews evaluating the Sokol ATV say that it is difficult to call its suspension comfortable. But when the alternative to hard driving is covering many kilometers on foot, it’s easy to come to terms with it.

Wheels and steering

When forcing various obstacles, high force and feedback on the steering wheel can become a serious problem. To prevent this from happening, the all-terrain vehicle was equipped with a hydraulic booster converted to a motorcycle steering wheel. As a result, even on the spot, you can turn the wheels with one finger.

The industry does not produce tires and rims that satisfy the developer. For the Sokol ATV, the technical characteristics of which are unique in their own way, you have to make them yourself. Low-pressure truck tires OI-47 (1100*420*21) or IP-184 (1100*400*20) are used as the basis for future “shoes”, which lighten up to 30 - 35 kg by removing excess cord and cutting a special tread. The pressure inside these tubeless tires is only 0.2 atmospheres, and inflation is carried out by the supply of exhaust gases.

Thanks to a unique technical solution, the heavy, 700 kg ATV exerts minimal pressure on the ground and has positive buoyancy even with the driver and passenger in the saddle. When overcoming water obstacles, he is unrivaled!

ATV Sokol off-road winner

Fans of active recreation or hunting prefer to use a Sokol ATV instead of a car. With the help of such a compact vehicle, you can get into the depths of Russian forests, drive through wetlands, and areas with zero traffic, where even a small car cannot pass.

History of creation The founder of all-terrain vehicles is Alexey Pozdeev. Initially, the main goal of the manufacturer was to create a project of a car with which you can move around Novosibirsk natural attractions, without being afraid to drive on the most difficult off-roads. The creator, in order to achieve maximum cross-country ability in any conditions, abandoned traditional solutions used in cars. The result is an all-terrain vehicle for extreme mobility. The car was distinguished by fairly high technical parameters not only of the power unit, but also of the transmission and chassis. Even in terms of external parameters, we can say with confidence that such a model is not capable of “competing” with any production version of ATVs. In the production of the all-terrain vehicle, the manufacturer did not use proprietary mechanical components. Ready-made spare parts and parts from well-known brands were used as a basis. Some mechanisms have been modified to obtain the required performance parameters.

In general, the Sokol ATV is a powerful technique that will make every hunter’s vacation as interesting as possible and filled with unforgettable emotions.

Power unit

The experimental version of the equipment was equipped with a 1SZ-FE engine in combination with an automatic transmission from a Toyota Vitz. The power unit is distinguished by a large displacement of 996 cm3, the presence of four cylinders and a maximum power of 70 hp. With. A liquid cooling system is provided to ensure long-term operation of the motor. Thanks to these parameters of the power unit, the ATV can accelerate to 80 km/h. Despite the fact that the model went on sale, it was quickly discontinued because, according to the manufacturer, these parameters were not enough. Therefore, the next version was equipped with a 1NZ-FE power unit with a volume of 1496 cm3 and a power of 109 hp. This unit was also borrowed from Toyota Vitz. Therefore, the power unit has a long service life and more suitable parameters.

Transmission and suspension of equipment

To improve the ATV's cross-country ability, independent suspension was excluded from the design. Instead, the manufacturer installed Suzuki continuous axles. Next, the transmission was equipped with a rigid permanent interaxle lock, while the rear axle differential was completely locked in one position. Naturally, this had a negative impact on handling, but in return the manufacturer provided the vehicle with increased cross-country ability. Chassis of the ATV But here it should be noted that the front axle remains switchable. In addition, the unit was equipped with hydraulic brakes, which perfectly perform their function in difficult operating conditions. In the suspension design, the manufacturer used silent blocks and springs from the GAZelle 3302. There are no stabilizers, link arms and other parts that are most subject to wear. Thanks to this, the vehicle can safely drive over logs, large stones and other obstacles on the road. ATV owners note that the suspension can hardly be called comfortable, but in such operating conditions it will be the best option.

Steering and wheels

When overcoming various obstacles, the most serious problem while driving can be the high force and feedback through the steering unit. In order to avoid such a situation, the manufacturer used a steering wheel in the Sokol model, which was previously upgraded into a motorcycle one. The unit was equipped with a hydraulic booster, which significantly simplified the control process. Among the products of various manufacturers of wheel rims and tires, the founder of the transport did not find the optimal option for an all-terrain vehicle, so he began developing the chassis himself. Here, tires from OI-47 trucks with dimensions 1100x420x21 or IP-184 with parameters 1100x400x20 are used. To reduce weight, excess cord has been removed from the tires and the tread has been cut. Excess cord has been removed from the tires and the tread has been cut. Thus, the chassis system is lighter by 30-35 kg. The wheels are inflated by supplying exhaust gases. The model weighs 700 kg, thanks to which it minimally loads the soil.

No production version can beat the Falcon. The all-terrain vehicle was manufactured without proprietary mechanical components. The base is assembled from ready-made spare parts and parts from a well-known brand. To achieve certain parameters, the parts were specially modified.

Experienced all-terrain vehicle drivers believe that the equipment should be modernized with minor tuning: installing arch extensions, beams with additional lighting, winches, new mirrors and comfortable seats. Handles should be equipped with heating. Then the driver will feel more comfortable.

There are no analogues yet. You can only find a copy made at the factory in batches. The name may vary. The cost may also be more expensive. The invention is being improved by its author, since he is the main manufacturer.
