All-terrain vehicle with steering wheel: choose an ATV from the side-x-side family

Yamaha is performing with only one model - Rhino (from 650 thousand rubles), but what! With this undisputed bestseller, the Japanese concern proved that one ace in the hole is better than none at stake. The evolution of the model does not stand still: keeping pace with its prototype - the well-known Grizzly, Rhino received a new 700 cc injection engine and an updated lining design. The main feature of the car for which it is loved is its amazing reliability. Just a quick glance at the hardware - you can see that every detail is created with a multiple safety margin. Excellent cross-country ability at the level of an ATV is due to the presence of differential locks and carefully calculated weight distribution. Torque, spaciousness, comfort - everything is at its best.

What engine size do you prefer?

Russians, as a rule, approach the choice of equipment from this position: the larger the engine capacity, the better. In fact, this is not always the case. Excessive power and agility have a negative impact on cross-country ability - I went too far with gas, the wheels started slipping and the car hung on its belly. Therefore, torque is much more important. But it does not always depend on the engine size.

Photo: atvillustrated.com

For example, one of the most popular and popular models of utilitarian UTV Polaris Ranger 570 has an engine with a displacement of less than 600 cubic meters. There is not much power in the unit - only 45 “horses”, but thanks to the transmission, the all-terrain vehicle pulls very confidently, like a diesel truck. A completely different song with some Chinese side-x-side with an engine capacity of 800 cc.

You sit behind the wheel, press the gas... and you completely feel like you forgot to take the handbrake off. That is, despite the considerable volume of the engine, the all-terrain vehicle does not move at all. The service life of Asian engines is short. It’s good if they come out a couple of thousand without any breakdowns, but usually they require major repairs after a mileage of 700-800 km. The bulkhead is not cheap, on average about 60,000 - 70,000 rubles.

By the way, Chinese UTVs with an engine capacity of over 500 cubic meters are generally not worth taking, since the workers of the Celestial Empire have not yet learned how to make high-quality engines with high cubic capacity. Therefore, if you need a good workhorse, then it is better to save up or take out loans, but take something branded, it will definitely last longer than the “Chinese” one. For utilitarian UTVs, the optimal engine size is from 570 to 800 cc. If we are considering a sporty side-x-side option, then it will be a “litrushka”.

Yamaha Rhino

Grizzly has long been a trendsetter in the field of large utility ATVs. Rhino appears to be following in his bearish footsteps.

Unfortunately, the Honda Big Red, built on the basis of the TRX680 Rincon, is not officially supplied to Russia, only through private – read “gray” – import (price in the USA is about 10 thousand dollars). It's a pity, this car could remove the Yamaha Rhino from the throne of the king of the mountain of the market. And there are reasons for this: a unique three-range hydromechanical transmission and “smart” all-wheel drive. Thanks to the doors and nets on the roll cage pillars, the illusion of a full-fledged buggy cabin is created.

Features of the ATV

An ATV is a four-wheeled type of motor vehicle designed for driving on dirt roads and off-road. It is especially popular with hunters, fishermen and farmers. This all-terrain vehicle is distinguished by increased maneuverability, maneuverability, ease of operation, low fuel consumption and a compact size that facilitates its storage.

Depending on the level of equipment, ATVs are able to overcome a variety of obstacles (slides, mud, streams, wetlands). They travel on ATVs even in conditions of almost complete absence of roads. Additionally, a trailer can be attached to them and used as a traction vehicle.

When driving an ATV on roads, you must follow the established traffic rules. You should also remember that you can operate an ATV with an internal combustion engine with a volume of more than 50 cm³ only if the rider has a vehicle registration and a driver’s license.

The giant in the UTV world is the Arctic Cat Prowler 1000 (920 thousand rubles). It has the most impressive dimensions, carrying capacity and the largest engine. The one-liter V-Twin gives the hefty car remarkable traction and speed parameters. The smaller brothers - 500 and 700 cc cars (450-720 thousand rubles), although they do not make you open your mouth from their monumentality and scope, are captivating with the design and quality of finishing of the driver's seat: large informative displays, seats with many adjustments and steering wheels, trimmed leather - why not a luxury SUV?

What category of license is required to drive an ATV?

According to the same Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 796 of June 12, 1999, to drive an ATV you need a license for a tractor driver of category “A I”.

What category of license is required to drive an ATV?

To obtain them, you must contact an organization such as Gostekhnadzor. In this case, the owner of the vehicle must provide a self-propelled vehicle passport (PSM). This document provides basic information about the ATV.

It is Gostekhnadzor that is responsible for registering vehicles with PSM, so even if the driver has a driver’s license issued by the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate, he will still have to register a license for an ATV at Gostekhnadzor. The only exception is ATVs with a vehicle title. In this case, the license issued by the State Traffic Inspectorate will also be valid.

By the way, the license to drive an ATV is also valid for this type of equipment such as a snowmobile.

The liter Prowler is the largest in everything, from the engine to the ground clearance. 550, 650 and 700 cc “kittens” are equipped with single-cylinder engines.

Fine for driving an ATV without a license in 2022

According to federal legislation, driving a vehicle without a driver's license is punishable by a fine in the amount of 5,000 to 30,000 thousand rubles (Article 12.7, Part 1 of the Administrative Code).

Where can I get a license for an ATV?

The driver’s lack of documents for the ATV, including confirmation of its state registration, is a gross violation and may lead to the seizure of the vehicle and its placement in a impound lot.

In the inexpensive segment of the market, the Russian-Chinese half-breeds Baltmotors rule the roost. Three models of the Panda UTV series (239–368 thousand rubles) look quite decent compared to overseas competitors (their group test will appear in one of the spring issues of Moto), and cost half as much. Starting from a rear-wheel drive 300 cc machine, most oriented towards household work (light weight, tipper body, general simplicity of design), ending with a 500 cc all-wheel drive four-seater “Panda” for hunters and fishermen, all of them are equipped with lighting equipment, mirrors and turn signals and are certified for traffic on public roads.

Chinese happiness

Photo: stewartautorepair.ca

The natural desire of any buyer is to save money. I went into a motorcycle showroom where they sell branded equipment, saw a UTV for 700,000 - 800,000 rubles, bit my lower lip in shock (it’s no joke, for that money you can get a Niva or UAZ, which, unlike an all-terrain vehicle, are warm and dry ), and you wander dejectedly to the sellers selling Chinese analogues. Alloy wheels, cool tires, mirrors, turn signals, roof, windshield, music, winch, tow bar, plastic doors... Unless there are airbags and a brake parachute as standard. You look at the price tag stuck on the side-x-side, and you can’t believe your eyes with happiness - from 300,000 rubles.

At the same time, “Chinese” sellers will swear by their mother that their product is not inferior in quality to famous manufacturers and is assembled almost on the same assembly line. But actually it is not. Yes, indeed, many components for UTVs from famous brands are produced in the Middle Kingdom, but the nuance is that brands do not skimp on the quality of components and strictly monitor everything at every stage of production.

Photo: utvplanet.ca

But the products produced under the logo of the Chinese quad industry, unfortunately, cannot boast of outstanding quality, since the manufacturer aims to make a UTV with a very rich configuration at a very low price (well, just like with cars). And this, as you understand, can be achieved by saving on the quality of components and assemblies.

A simple example: a UTV from a reputable manufacturer has forged aluminum suspension arms. And on the Chinese analogue everything looks the same, but upon detailed study it turns out that these are not forged levers, but cast under high pressure. This method of manufacturing suspension elements is about five times cheaper, but the service life is about the same amount shorter.

So is it worth it or not to buy a Chinese UTV? It is difficult to give a definite answer here. If you are ready to accept the fact that from time to time you will have to while away your leisure time with wrenches in your hands, even in the field, then you can vote with your ruble in favor of the “Chinese”. Especially if an all-terrain vehicle is needed not for everyday work, but for weekend entertainment.

In the sea of UTV diversity, it is not easy for an unprepared person to navigate. Manufacturers offer cars, as they say, to suit any request and budget. And if you decide to join the ranks of YouTubers, to make the best choice you need to answer several questions for yourself.

Advantages of UTVs

Comfort and safety.

The cabin with a roof provides protection from wind, rain and snow. Some models have a windshield and side doors to protect against dirt and stones. The driver and passengers wear seat belts.

Simple controls

. The car steering wheel makes maneuvers easier, and the dashboard configuration is familiar and understandable.

Functionality.

UTVs cope with utilitarian tasks of any complexity. Models have a body in which additional cargo can be transported.

How many passengers do we carry?

The vast majority of UTVs are capable of carrying a driver and one passenger. If you want to travel with a more expanded team, then you can use the body of an all-terrain vehicle for these needs. Which, however, is extremely unsafe. Firstly, on a bump, passengers in the cargo compartment can suddenly “eject”. Secondly, there is a risk that when driving the body will spontaneously want to recline. However, our people are very creative and install sofas with seat belts in the dump truck body. Forgetting that the passengers in this part of the UTV greatly change the weight distribution of the vehicle and the all-terrain vehicle can easily roll over on a sharp turn. Need I say what this entails?

Moreover, it is not clear why reinvent the wheel if UTV manufacturers have been producing equipment for large companies for a long time. For example, the Polaris Ranger Crew 900 is ready to carry five people, including the helmsman. To accommodate such a Crew, a second row of seats is provided. All passengers are belted, there are headrests for everyone, and thanks to the rigid frame, everyone traveling in the UTV travels safely. At the same time, as expected, the Polaris Ranger Crew 900 has a large dump body. A similar side-x-side cargo-passenger version is available in the BRP line.

The disadvantage of such UTVs is obvious: due to the long wheelbase, the “limousine” is slow-moving and catches the thresholds on almost every bump. However, this does not affect cross-country ability in any way. Therefore, if you like to go outdoors (hunting, fishing or just walking off-road), then two-row UTVs are the most ideal option.

Well, if you are a lone wolf, then the new 2014 product from the same Polaris – the Sportsman Ice all-terrain vehicle – will be just right for you. It is the same size as a regular ATV, with the only difference being that the seating position in it is not for a motorcycle, but for a car! The engine has a small volume - only 325 “cubes”, but more is not needed, because the handling of this thing is, to put it mildly, peculiar.

The fact is that it is narrow compared to any, even the smallest UTV, and therefore more tumbling. And if it had a more powerful engine, holding this jeep in turns would be aerobatics. Yes, ATVs are equipped with liter engines and nothing else, but do not forget that on an ATV, when turning, the rider uses not only the steering wheel, but also his own body, thanks to which the ATV does not tumble. And being strapped into the pilot's seat, the driver of the Polaris Sportsman Ice does not have the opportunity to shift his entire body weight in the direction of the turn.

The body of the Polaris Sportsman Ice is not a dump truck and is very small. A fishing rod and a small backpack will fit, but you can’t count on more. The car is undoubtedly interesting, but, to be honest, it has nothing in common with a UTV other than external similarities.

. So, if you have decided who you are in life - a fisherman or an extreme sports enthusiast, a lone wolf or a lover of large companies, a fan of branded equipment or a lover of doing repairs yourself - run to a motorcycle dealership. The summer quad adventure season is open!

Quad o cycles, quad and cycles and tricycles. What are the differences?

Surely, you are already familiar with such a vehicle as an ATV . It turns out that a regular driver's license is not suitable for driving it. And you will find out which ones are suitable below. We'll also talk about the different types of ATVs and even mention snowmobiles.

But we will start our excursion with a new category of vehicles “B1” - tricycles and quadricycles. These names, unlike “ATVs,” are not yet familiar to us and it is extremely difficult to find such vehicles on Russian roads.

In fact, many people believe that category “B1” allows you to drive a car with an automatic transmission. But no, this is a completely new category of transport, until recently unknown to us. Although, of course, everything is relative. It’s just that previously existing similar transport was classified in other categories.

Step-by-step assembly instructions

Having all the tools, equipment and spare parts in hand, you can begin assembling the cargo ATV.

The most varied frame configurations allowed

To do this you need to follow the following instructions:

  1. If the frame is assembled independently, you need to select the appropriate pipes and connect them together using a welding machine. In addition, ears need to be welded to the frame, which will later serve as fasteners and levers. You also need to attach brackets to the appropriate places.
  2. Next you need to attach the luggage compartment to the frame. It may consist of one or two parts. After this, all parts should be painted, thus protecting them.
  3. Once the paint is dry, the front and rear suspension can be attached. After them, you need to install inclined racks and shock absorbers.
  4. Next you need to install the steering. It can be either automobile or motorcycle. In such cases, gear drives are best replaced with chain drives. The transmission in a cargo ATV must be mechanical. It is best to direct the input shafts directly to the front and rear axles of the vehicle.

It is best to make the main body from fiberglass

  5. Finally, a braking system must be provided. After it you need to install the battery and lighting fixtures.
  6. The main body is best made from fiberglass. It must be applied to a workpiece cut from foam plastic. Additionally, metal parts must be inserted into such a structure. They should later be used to attach the body to the frame. Then dry, prime, clean and paint.

At the end, you additionally need to install a muffler.

Making a choice

The selection of certain parts to create a cargo ATV must be carried out in accordance with the functions that the vehicle must perform. If the vehicle will be used to transport heavy loads, it is very important to use reliable pipes for the frame.

In addition, you need to select an appropriate, sufficiently productive engine that will have significant power.

It is very important to use reliable pipes for the frame

Rear suspension

In order to make a rear suspension, it is allowed to use the rear axle of a car. In this case, the axle will have a cross-axle differential. In addition, experts allow the use of a cardan-gear design.

Front suspension

The front suspension arms should be attached to the frame using silent blocks. These parts can be either purchased or completely homemade. In the second case, the work must be performed in full accordance with the design of the vehicle.

Engine

It is best to use motorcycle engines for homemade cargo ATVs. It is also allowed to equip the vehicle with a power unit from a walk-behind tractor.

If possible, experts allow you to equip homemade ATVs with car engines.

The front suspension arms should be attached to the frame using silent blocks

What is a quadricycle and a tricycle?

Quads and cycles are four-wheeled motor vehicles (tricycles - three-wheeled), intended for use on public roads and subject to registration with the traffic police in the general manner.

An example of a quadricycle is the Soviet car-motorcycle SZM-S3D “Invalidka” (on the left in the figure). Some of you may remember this “misunderstanding” of Soviet engineering with a whirring motorcycle engine.

Tricycles (photo in the center) are very common in Asian countries as cargo-passenger three-wheeled motorcycle transport (our analogue is the Ant scooter).

But you can only see a three-wheeled motorcycle in large cities, and only if you try really hard. It’s just that such tricycles are found only among motorcycle aesthetes or handy Kulibins.

By the way, large quadricycles are often called Road ATVs, and in the West they are abbreviated as GG-Quad, also Moto Quad, Quad Bikes , etc.

Any of you, if desired, can easily acquire at least a tricycle. A flurry of enthusiastic and curious glances at you on the road is guaranteed!

An example of a commercially available tricycle is the Roadster Spider.

Undoubtedly, modern three-wheeled vehicles look very impressive, but this is a miracle. almost like a full-fledged car. Also, according to one of the owners, unlike two-wheeled motorcycles, you will have to stand in traffic jams on such a device no less often than on a car, and the comfort will be much less. Especially in inclement weather.

Roughly speaking, quadricycles are either three- or four-wheeled motorcycles, or mini cars that require the same documents as a car or motorcycle. When purchasing such vehicles, a Vehicle Passport (PTS) is attached.
