Blitz test of the all-terrain vehicle "Falcon": engine from Corolla, axles from Jimny

The Sokol ATV has great power and heavy weight. Thanks to this, he perfectly overcomes difficult obstacles in natural conditions.

Falcon Pickup

This compact vehicle has incomparable capabilities to a car. Tourists often travel by all-terrain vehicle to actively relax and look at natural beauty.

Radical solution

For Alexey Pozdeev, who created the Sokol ATV, Novosibirsk and its surroundings are a familiar habitat. You can make your way through the forests, swamps and salt marshes surrounding the city on elk or deer. Having decided that such a method of transportation clearly does not correspond to modern realities, the author of the project developed a car capable of traveling on the most difficult off-road conditions. For this purpose, we had to abandon many technical solutions familiar to modern all-terrain vehicles. The Sokol ATV, photos of which are posted on many websites, is essentially an extreme vehicle. It seems that mass-produced models cannot compete with it when moving over rough terrain.

Of course, when working on the project, its author did not manufacture the components and assemblies himself, but took ready-made parts as a basis, albeit making certain changes and modifications to some of them.

Where can I buy

Falcon 1.5

The new Sokol all-terrain vehicle costs from 600,000 rubles. You can buy a used one for half the price. Additional equipment must be purchased separately. Sales are handled by official representatives of Sokol, for example, https://sokol-atv.ru/

No production version can beat the Falcon. The all-terrain vehicle was manufactured without proprietary mechanical components. The base is assembled from ready-made spare parts and parts from a well-known brand. To achieve certain parameters, the parts were specially modified.

Experienced all-terrain vehicle drivers believe that the equipment should be modernized with minor tuning: installing arch extensions, beams with additional lighting, winches, new mirrors and comfortable seats. Handles should be equipped with heating. Then the driver will feel more comfortable.

There are no analogues yet. You can only find a copy made at the factory in batches. The name may vary. The cost may also be more expensive. The invention is being improved by its author, since he is the main manufacturer.

Engine

In the first version of the ATV, a 1SZ-FE engine was used as its power unit along with an automatic transmission from a Toyota Vitz with a displacement of 996 cc. cm., having four cylinders and developing a power of 70 hp. With. Cooling is liquid. Its capabilities were sufficient to confidently accelerate the all-terrain vehicle to a speed of 80 km/h. However, as quite often happens, after extensive testing this seemed not enough, and a version of the Falcon appeared, equipped with a 1NZ-FE engine with a displacement of 1496 cc. cm and power 109 l. With. It was also borrowed from the Toyota Vitz.

As a result, the maximum speed remained the same, but, thanks to the torque, which increased from 94 to 144 Nm, the dynamics and traction characteristics increased significantly.

Modifications

The Yakut all-terrain vehicle has the following modifications:

  • Falcon Pro with a Toyota 1nz unit is the newest model and is popular among fishermen and hunters. It is also used to perform emergency tasks. Tires with a new pattern on the Sokol pro ATV increase cross-country ability. For such machines this is an important indicator.
  • Falcon 1.0 with 1SSZ-FE engine. This version did not stay in production for long, as it did not have enough power. But at the same time, she easily passed through various natural obstacles. Now you can buy a model with 1.3 engine.
  • Falcon 1.5 with a 1NZ-FE engine has perfect parameters and a long service life. It will be appreciated by fishing enthusiasts and hunters, because... it does not sink and passes through large snowdrifts without effort
  • Falcon Pickup with a Toyota 1zz engine is suitable for transporting one passenger and the necessary luggage. For greater convenience in transporting things, the rear of the ATV was equipped with a folding roof and sides.
  • Sokol Trophy is a new model with a Toyota 1zz-fe engine (1.8 liters). Equipped with power steering and hydraulic vacuum brake booster.

Transmission and suspension

In an effort to ensure maximum protection of the units when driving over rough terrain and to increase the cross-country ability of his brainchild, the author of the project decided to abandon the suspension of an independent design. The ATV was installed on continuous axles from the popular Japanese SUV Suzuki Jimni. But even the capabilities of these operationally proven units seemed insufficient to the developer. The transmission received a rigid permanent center lock, and the rear axle differential was tightly welded. It is clear that this did not have a very favorable effect on handling, but cross-country ability has increased significantly. At the same time, the front axle is still switchable. To do this, it was necessary to make special hubs of a hermetically sealed design. Along with the axles, hydraulic brakes also migrated to the all-terrain vehicle.

The suspension is made as simple as possible. Its design uses springs and silent blocks from the GAZ-3302 Gazelle, and there are no parts susceptible to damage, such as additional levers, rods and stabilizers. As a result, even if there are logs or stones under the belly of the ATV, the risk of breakdowns is minimized. Reviews evaluating the Sokol ATV say that it is difficult to call its suspension comfortable. But when the alternative to hard driving is covering many kilometers on foot, it’s easy to come to terms with it.

general information

The all-terrain vehicle was designed by Alexey Pozdeev in Yakutia - specifically so that it could easily see any sights while passing through difficult off-road conditions.

In order for the vehicle to achieve maximum cross-country ability, the designer did not use traditional solutions. The result is a design that has all the necessary technical data for extreme trips. No other vehicle has such cross-country ability yet.

The design of the Sokol ATV allows it to pass through swampy areas, mountainous terrain, mud and snowdrifts. The all-terrain vehicle will easily drive through sand and rivers and will not drown, as it has special tires that allow it to float.

However, a strong current makes it difficult to control and can even carry away the car. If you add an electric boat motor to the ATV, you can move around the pond at increased speed. This is convenient when you need to get to the other side.

Wheels and steering

When forcing various obstacles, high force and feedback on the steering wheel can become a serious problem. To prevent this from happening, the all-terrain vehicle was equipped with a hydraulic booster converted to a motorcycle steering wheel. As a result, even on the spot, you can turn the wheels with one finger.

The industry does not produce tires and rims that satisfy the developer. For the Sokol ATV, the technical characteristics of which are unique in their own way, you have to make them yourself. Low-pressure truck tires OI-47 (1100*420*21) or IP-184 (1100*400*20) are used as the basis for future “shoes”, which lighten up to 30 - 35 kg by removing excess cord and cutting a special tread. The pressure inside these tubeless tires is only 0.2 atmospheres, and inflation is carried out by the supply of exhaust gases.

Thanks to a unique technical solution, the heavy, 700 kg ATV exerts minimal pressure on the ground and has positive buoyancy even with the driver and passenger in the saddle. When overcoming water obstacles, he is unrivaled!

Advantages and disadvantages of Sokol ATVs

Sokol Pro

The all-terrain vehicle has the following positive qualities:

  • Cross-country ability . The all-terrain vehicle will pass through the most difficult piece of land. It will not drown in a swamp, nor will it get stuck in mud or sand. The ATV successfully overcomes sticky soil, small holes and snowdrifts up to 50 cm thick.
  • Reliable chassis . The equipment is equipped with unique tires and rims that cannot be deformed. Sharp stones will not damage the wheels.
  • Compactness . Despite the enormous power, the all-terrain vehicle has small dimensions. It can be placed in a garage and transported with a special trailer. The car is capable of passing through narrow forest paths, along country roads and off-road.
  • Speed . The design has a powerful engine for speeds of up to 109 km/h. While driving, the car does not lose stability and efficiency.

Not all characteristics of the Sokol ATV are positive. There are also disadvantages:

  • Controllability . Strengthening the chassis led to a significant decrease in handling. When the device crosses terrain with various obstacles, the driver feels this disadvantage. All shocks and vibrations are felt on the steering wheel.
  • Price . The ATV is not as expensive as its analogues, but still has a high price. Passenger cars cost the same.

Vehicles cannot travel on public roads because they do not meet the requirements. You can't drive it into the city. This is against the rules of the road.

Major breakdowns and repairs

Since the equipment is created using parts from disassembled used cars, breakdowns are associated with failure of the power unit and transmission mechanisms. On motors, the cables leading to the sensors may break. If the catalytic converter is retained, an error may occur (when refueling with low-quality fuel). But with regular maintenance and timely replacement of process fluids, the power plant and transmission operate reliably.

Owners criticize Sokol series vehicles for poor handling, since the rear axle differential is fixed in one position. When operating on hard ground, tire wear accelerates, and increased loads on the transmission can destroy gears and driveshafts. If parts break down, it becomes difficult to purchase spare parts, since the units are borrowed from Toyota cars created for the Japanese domestic market.

Due to the lack of a closed cabin, it is difficult to move around on an ATV in winter; owners install homemade electric heating on the seat and steering handles. The manufacturer did not provide for the installation of a floor in the cabin on either side of the seat. When carrying additional cargo, elements may fall on the rear axle drive shaft or the heated exhaust system muffler. Car owners carry out their own modifications by installing shields made of corrugated aluminum sheet.

The factory luggage box has a small capacity, which forces owners to build homemade structures over the rear fenders. The frame is made of steel pipe, the elements are connected by welding. It is possible to install a soft backrest for the passenger who is behind the driver. The site provides 2-3 places for installing 20-liter gasoline cans, which allows you to increase the power reserve by 2-2.5 times.

Technical characteristics of Sokol Pro

The new modification of Sokol Pro ATVs has the following technical characteristics:

  • Engine – Toyota Vitz 1NZ-FE.
  • Engine capacity – 1.5 l.
  • Transmission – automatic gearbox.
  • Brakes – disc with hydraulic vacuum booster.
  • The front and rear axles are Spicer-Pilot with pneumatic locking.
  • Tires – X-TRIM 1200x600.
  • Fuel tank – 40 l.
  • Light – LED headlights front and rear, additional light at the front.

The package includes a trunk with additional luggage racks, and there are additional canisters on the front section. There is also a towbar for attaching a trailer, as well as hand protection. The device also includes a hose for inflating wheels.

The fuel consumption of this ATV is quite low. On average, the car consumes 8-11 liters per 100 km.

Classification of bias tires 10×10

In addition to the disc radius, pay attention to other markings. So the inscription on the 10×10 R12 ATV tire indicates that the width and height of the working chamber are the same, equal to 10 inches, and the radius of the rim is 12 inches. But the choice should be based not only on these parameters.

The type of tread must be taken into account. The pattern, direction, size of the “checkers”, everything matters. Let's take a closer look at the classification of low-pressure tires 10×10, with a radius of 12 inches.

Sports

Tires of this class are characterized by low tread, even its absence (in its usual form). The pressure in them is made higher in order to ensure elasticity and ease of movement on hard ground. The last criterion is mandatory, because such wheels are unsuitable for driving on mud.

Mud

This tire for the R12 ATV has a deep tread with a large distance between the trapezoids. The pressure in it is always low for passing obstacles (holes, hillocks, logs, etc.). The tread blocks are large, which allows the wheel to bite into snow or swampy mud.

Driving Experience

Sokol ATVs have good cross-country ability, but because of this, controllability is reduced. The movement of the model is dynamic, which allows you to get a significant dose of adrenaline.

An interesting feature of the Falcon is driving on water; the domestic vehicle is an amphibian. The car quickly picks up speed and easily overcomes various obstacles on the road.
