2014 Can-Am Outlander 500 ATV Review
Driving an inexpensive BRP ATV
Have you ever wondered if there are currently great, affordable deals in the mid-size ATV category? It seems that even small-displacement ATV models are becoming more and more expensive, even from the most basic configuration. BRP hopes that the Can-Am Outlander 500 will be that perfect combination of mid-range power and low price.
When talking about the new Outlander 500, let's start with the basics. The new mid-ranger is built on the SST G2 chassis. This frame has been redesigned for better handling and stability of the ATV. BRP isn't shy about boasting about the Outlander 500's precise handling, with Can-Am's double A-arm suspension up front for minimal squat under braking and a Torsional Trailing Arm Independent (TTI) rear suspension. According to the manufacturer, these are the best suspension systems at the moment. Gas-filled shock absorbers with five-position preload adjustment are responsible for suspension travel and shock absorption. The front suspension has 9 inches (228 mm) of travel, and the design minimizes bounce and kickback for added confidence. At the rear, suspension travel is 9.3 inches (236 mm) and there is a removable anti-roll bar. The rear suspension design maximizes traction when accelerating hard, allowing the Outlander to simply squat and throttle, staying close to the ground.
The BRP torsion bar suspension on double trailing arms “travels” 236 millimeters.
Propulsion is provided by a 500cc Rotax V-Twin engine. This engine has long been loved by tuning and modification experts. In stock configuration, this liquid-cooled 4-stroke engine produces 46 horsepower, but there's potential for more. There are four valves per cylinder and an electronic injection system. When you start this beast, you immediately hear the pleasant guttural sound of a well-balanced two-cylinder engine. An enlarged aluminum radiator and an electric fan maintain the optimal operating temperature of the motor.
A tough midsize ATV like this needs reliable power delivery from the crankshaft to the rear wheels. A belt-driven continuously variable transmission is responsible for this. The engine braking feature also helps with braking. Can-Am redesigned the transmission's cold air intake system to maintain optimal belt temperatures, positioning it slightly higher to keep water out. If water does get inside, there is a drain hole that will help get rid of the fluid in the transmission housing.
If you choose the DPS model, you will get these aluminum wheels.
Things like 214mm brake discs with two-piston calipers give the rider confidence that the ATV can be stopped without any problems when needed. There are two discs with two calipers at the front, and one disc is installed on the rear right wheel. The steering wheel lever and pedal provide easy and convenient control of the braking system.
This utilitarian ATV is ready not only for fun trips, but also for work. The LINQ luggage system allows you to securely secure your luggage. The front trunk can support up to 45 kilograms, and the rear trunk can support up to 90 kilograms. Thanks to this carrying capacity, you are unlikely to have to leave anything you need at home while on the road.
In total, the Outlander 500 luggage racks can support up to 135 kilograms.
The base 2014 Can-Am Outlander 500 is very well equipped, but BRP can always offer something more. One of these additions is Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering. The 2014 Can-Am Outlander 500 DPS features not only power steering, but also a Visco-Lok QE front differential, cast aluminum wheels and 26-inch Carlisle Badlands tires. This package will add about $1,000 more to the price tag of the standard Can-Am Outlander 500.
Driving impressions
Using the ignition key programmed by the DESS (Digital Entrance Security System) security system, you immediately remember that if a thief wanted to steal your ATV, you would never start it without the key. Even if the criminals manage to take the car to a service center, a new key is made only for the registered owner, so they will be immediately discovered there! Other manufacturers should pay more attention to the issue of safety.
Of course, there were no problems with the start thanks to the electronic injection system. The Outlander 500's riding position is very comfortable, with the seat large and soft, and the steering wheel-mounted instrument panel looking directly at the driver.
The Outlander 500 copes well with driving on winding rocky paths between trees. The transmission works exactly as the manufacturer claims.
This is not a fast machine, but the ATV is quite capable of light work tasks and off-road driving. We drove models with power steering, and it's hard to imagine the Outlander 500 without it. Obviously, the base model was created with an eye to the lowest possible price, but having driven with BRP's proprietary three-mode dynamic power steering, you are unlikely to want to return to a model without it.
The only thing that is not clear is the lack of a Visco-Lok QE front differential in the base model. It seems to us that it should be present even on the cheapest version of the ATV.
When it comes to power and reliability, the Rotax engine is, as always, the best. We didn't plan to test the ATV for speed and see how quickly it could cut through the trees, but the Can-Am Outlander 500 always gives the impression that it still has a fuse left in stock.
Overall, this is an extremely profitable purchase. Can-Am ATVs are often said to be too expensive, but when you look at price and features compared to the competition, it's clear that the Outlander 500 delivers very well.
Estimated cost
A new model can be purchased for $12,500, but some places have lower prices.
But a used unit, with a mileage of 1 thousand km, will cost you only about $9,000.
When choosing an all-terrain vehicle on the Internet, do not forget to ask the driver about breakdowns and accidents .
Even if on the outside it is only a little scratched, this does not mean that everything is so rosy inside.
The Stels ATV 300 V all-terrain vehicle, despite its modest engine and average power, is the sales leader among the Stels model range.
The positive aspect of this reliable ATV is its cost, which is significantly lower than its foreign analogues.

Motorcycle repair BRP
Despite the fact that ATVs, jet skis, snowmobiles and other BRP products are famous for their high build quality, even they require repairs. In most cases, restoring the functionality of such motorcycle equipment requires, in addition to the knowledge and experience of a specialist to diagnose faults, the availability of special tools. In their absence, various available means are used to help, which has a corresponding impact on the quality of work.
Our mechanics repair BRP equipment (and other brands) in full accordance with the requirements of the manuals and using special tools. Thread locking sealants are also used in the work, and the corresponding connections are pulled with the force set by the manufacturer.
Depending on the nature of the malfunction and the availability of spare parts for a particular model, our workshop specialists spend from two to seven days repairing BRP ATVs. If necessary, these terms can be reduced without loss of quality - we have repeatedly proven this in practice within the framework of a popular one (the conditions are negotiated individually with the customer).
