BAJAJ Pulsar NS 200 (NS200) – technical specifications of the Indian sports car

An Indian with Austrian roots, produced under the name Bajaj Pulsar NS200, is a very interesting bike . This small-capacity bike is produced in India, at the same plant as the younger models of KTM, and it is distinguished from most other light motorcycles from Asia by its modernity and technology. It has a lot in common with the same KTM Duke 200 and 390 series, and this is one of the significant advantages of a native of India. At the same time, his price remained quite Indian, that is, affordable to a wide range of buyers.

Design

The Bajaj Pulsar 200 looks very good. Modern design without the cheap “frills” typical of Chinese motorcycles, an aggressively raised tail, a predatory silhouette... They did a great job on the appearance of the bike. “Pulsar” looks stylish , but at the same time laconic. A kind of urban naked in the best traditions of recent years, which does not try to be like famous models from other manufacturers.

and dignity

The motorcycle, in principle, has a holistic character, unlike many Chinese models, which have become famous for their obvious “defects.”

The advantages include:

  • no vibrations despite 1 cylinder;
  • the price is Chinese, and the quality is Austrian;
  • low center of gravity;
  • maneuverability.

Specifications of Bajaj Pulsar NS200

For such a baby, the specifications of the Bajaj Pulsar are truly outstanding. Modern technologies have been used in the motorcycle, which distinguishes it from the horde of Chinese small-capacity motorcycles, built according to the same patterns that were outdated a quarter of a century ago. Combined with an adequate price, the Pulsar generally looks like one of the best models in its class.

Engine

It has much in common with the power units installed on KTM motorcycles. 4 valves per cylinder, volume 199 cm3 , liquid cooling, three spark plugs - this is not just another Chinese engine copied from an ancient “Japanese” 30 years ago. The engine of the Bajaj Pulsar 200 produces a maximum power of 23.5 horsepower and a torque of 18.3 Nm , accelerating the bike to 135 km/h . The only thing that stands out from the overall picture is the carburetor. The Indians still saved money and decided not to install an injector, but even without it the Pulsar is very good. But the model was equipped with a normal oil filter instead of the Chinese “mesh”, and standard safety bars that protect the engine from damage in the event of a fall. from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 10 seconds .

Transmission

There are 6 gears in total , like in any other modern motorcycle. The gear ratios are short, so you will have to click the gearbox often, but this is the price to pay for decent acceleration dynamics. As practice shows, the Pulsar feels no less confident in city traffic than large bikes, and it gets through traffic jams even better than most of them.

Chassis and brakes

The diagonal steel frame has a high safety margin. There is a standard telescopic fork the front, and a Nitrox monoshock absorber with adjustable stiffness at the rear. Both wheels have petal brake discs (280mm front and 230mm rear) with Bybre . Considering the modest weight of the Pulsar motorcycle, its braking system is quite effective.

Electronics

It would be naive to expect any auxiliary electronic systems from a budget motorcycle. There are none here; all the electronics are familiar to any motorcyclist who has tinkered with the wires of his steel horse at least once. The only thing worthy of mention is the headlight - it produces quite good light. The directional light beam confidently dispels darkness and provides decent visibility on night roads.

Weight and dimensions

The dry weight of the Bajaj Pulsar 200NS reaches 145 kg . This figure can be called average by the standards of the class, but the powerful engine offsets the slightly excess weight. Subjectively, the motorcycle does not seem heavy, and while driving its weight is not felt at all. And it is distinguished by its modest dimensions - height, length and width are 198, 108 and 70 centimeters, respectively.

Controllability

Thanks to its carefully thought-out design and moderate weight and size characteristics, the Pulsar is incredibly easy to control. Many experienced bikers, accustomed to looking down on small-bore bikes, after riding it, admit that this Indian motorcycle has its own character, and excellent handling coupled with good dynamics is its main advantage.

Fuel consumption

It depends on driving conditions. In the city or on the highway, if you squeeze everything out of the bike that it is capable of, gasoline consumption can reach 4 liters per 100 km , but with a quiet ride it will not exceed 2.5-3 liters . Considering the gas tank volume is 12 liters , this is quite enough for a city motorcycle. If Bajaj had been generous with an injector instead of a carburetor, the consumption could have been even less. The manufacturer recommends pouring AI-92 or AI-95.

Driving performance

The speed declared by the developers is 135 km/h. But users note that if you recalculate the gearbox ratios, it turns out to be 151 km/h . True, the lack of wind protection will create certain problems.

Comfortable cruiser - 120 km/h.

Acceleration to hundreds

Acceleration from zero to 100 km/h is not impressive - 9.3 seconds .

Fuel consumption

Consumption is relatively low - 2.03 liters per 100 km .

Motorcycle price

A brand new Bajaj Pulsar will cost about 150 thousand rubles , depending on the interior. It’s worth this money because the only worthy alternative for this amount is the ancient 400 cc “Japanese”. Well, a used copy can be found for 80-100 thousand rubles .

Flaws

It is difficult to find faults in a good quality motorcycle offered at a lower price than its Japanese counterparts.

Users note one downside - 3 spark plugs for 1 pot, this is clearly too much.

Manufacturers note that this improves the fuel combustion process, and therefore increases efficiency .

However, three spark plugs per cylinder is standard practice for Bajaj, regardless of what is used upstream. Carburetor or injector.

Repair and tuning

The small-capacity Bajaj breaks the stereotypes that budget Asian bikes fall apart as soon as they leave the dealership. For some reason, this inexpensive product from India stubbornly does not want to break down, and with timely maintenance, it will run smoothly year after year, racking up kilometers on its wheels. Some owners even invest in tuning, customizing the bike to suit themselves.

Repair

The Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle does not have any specific or common breakdowns. But thanks to its simple design, you can easily repair it yourself. You don’t need any special tools for this; any standard kit that you can buy at your nearest auto parts store will suffice.

Spare parts

They are inexpensive, and it is usually not difficult to find them in stock. Some parts of the engine and transmission are suitable from KTM bikes, but the price tag for Austrian parts is higher than for Indian ones.

Tuning

Most often, owners equip the Pulsar with a windshield, protective cages, sliders and other little things. Due to the budget nature of the bike, few people spend large sums on tuning, and besides, the Bajaj is already good, without any improvements.

Design

Since the Indians have extensive experience in assembling the Duke 200, the choice of materials or geometry was practically no difficulty. The Pulsar is built on a steel space frame, which provokes an increase in weight, but significantly “grounds” the center of gravity. Thanks to close cooperation with the Austrians, handling and maneuverability also do not create problems.

To simplify the design, engineers refused to completely modernize the suspension, so its body is made according to the classical design.

The front wheel is attached to the frame via a standard 37mm telescopic suspension. The rear is mounted through one shock absorber and a pendulum base. The suspension hydraulics were completely borrowed from Duke; the Austrian also gave the Pulsar additional pneumatic support for the rear axle.

Advantages and disadvantages

The Bajaj Pulsar 200 is a well-balanced bike . It belongs to the budget segment, but it has much more advantages than disadvantages, and for a reasonable price, buyers get a decent lightweight motorcycle.

Advantages

  • Combination of price and quality. At a moderate cost, Bajaj is head and shoulders above the vast majority of Chinese competitors.
  • Manufacturability . An engine similar to that of the KTM Duke 200, a 6-speed transmission, tenacious brakes and peppy dynamics allow the owner of the Bajaj to feel confident on the road.
  • Reliability . The model is devoid of “childhood sores”, and, according to reviews, breakdowns are rare.
  • Low cost of maintenance. Spare parts, tuning and consumables are inexpensive.
  • High top speed. The Bajaj Pulsar is indeed capable of achieving the manufacturer's claimed top speed of 135 km/h.

Flaws

  • Short passes . You will have to switch them frequently in city driving mode.
  • Weak grip . It is very demanding on oil and tightening torques, which must always be remembered when servicing the bike.
  • Switch problem . On early copies it sometimes failed, but this defect has long been eliminated.

Good things don’t make you want to write, so there hasn’t been anything for a long time, but little things have accumulated, so for the joy of Japanese experts I will burn with a verb. — The gearbox, which I admired so much, decided to spoil the impression - when moving from fourth to fifth, the gear can be knocked back to 4. What may play a role here is that I click the gears very quickly, and the clutch travel is very long, and it grabs in the end. - Rubber. It definitely needs to be changed - it slips in turns if the motorcycle is laid too low. — Creaking in the front end — after gymkhana-style training, a creaking appeared that I can’t yet identify — either in the steering wheel or in the wheel axle. It squeaks disgustingly, and not always. — The fastening of the chain guide fell off, as a result it lay on the chain. Tightened the new screw. — The spring power of the center stand is not enough to return it to its place. Thanks to the guys from the service, they showed me how to bet on it correctly.

— The footrest sensor stopped working. Those. The icon is on, but the engine does not stall. Now you can ride without removing the side) - The fuel gauge decided to joke, it started flashing that it was time to refuel, and at the same time showed one strip. I decided to trust the stripe, and as a result, it stalled with an empty tank, but fortunately, a full reserve. Here are some photos for a break from reading)

There is tank protection from the factory - convenient!

The lighting is really very beautiful

The suction, in the current heat I don’t even use it

Side arcs. He fell off the footrest once, the bars generally helped, but the passenger footpeg latch broke.

In the middle of all this there was supposed to be a scheduled maintenance, but the official service told me that they do not do maintenance (WTF?) and sent it to the dealer. For changing the oil and broaching, 2500 for the work seemed a bit much to me, so I did everything myself. There is a good video on YouTube that shows the replacement process inside and out. I will add that it is better to take out the coarse filter right away, it will drain faster, and remove the oil filter by hooking it with something like a wire with a corner at the end. Now about the sad stuff, that is, about the maximum speed. The running-in is of course up to 2000, but to reach 135 km/h you need a lot of patience. When I first accelerated to the maximum, my mirror folded, as if hinting that this motorcycle was not for the trails, not for the trails at all. What kind of 145, 175, etc. are there? Where? Overtaking on it is more fun than on the Ebre, but starting from 100 km/h it looks something like this - Honey, let's speed up. - Well, ok, here's +10 km/h. - Want more! Let's just be sharper - No, patience, here's 10 more for you, and then try to twist it some more. After 120 it turns sour completely, and a very smooth gradual increase in speed begins. Added to this is air resistance and the bike lacks confidence in its stability on the road, with a bit of wobble. Overtaking a car on the highway occurs without a reserve of speed, and not quickly. Those. you didn’t wow, and you rushed past a car going 100-110 km/h, but drove on sedately. And if the driver wants to race with you, then... well, it will be sad. Your own self-esteem will definitely not rise from this) If you try to drive fast, then you need to keep the speed in the region of 8-9 thousand, I’m not sure that the baby will like this mode. Now for your health. Due to its dimensions, it is an ideal cork stitcher. Allows you not to put your feet down where the super truck slows down. It’s true that I’ve already demolished one mirror, but that’s my own fault - I was too carried away by the process. At the same time, the pulsar is not at all invisible, like ebr; drivers even notice the low beam and yield. Dynamics up to 80 km/h are ideal for the city, moderately sharp to overtake, slip into a gap or between rows, and at the same time it is not so disruptive that if you turn it a little, it will drive into a pole or car. The combination of front + rear brakes + engine braking shows excellent results. It brakes with a bang, after replacing the tires it will be even better. The front brake works great when driving between rows, but the rear brake locks the wheel too early. Otherwise, no problems. Consumption pleases - 10 liters - exactly 300 km. I managed to be in two mini-accidents. In the first one, Ssanyong drove into me from behind at the checkpoint of his native work, broke the reflector and dented the license plate. And in the second, Infinity thought and thought about where to turn, and decided that it would be best to hit me, since the low speeds and our reactions with the driver caused only the seam of the motorcycle boot to suffer. The leitmotif of the drivers in both cases is “I didn’t look.” By the way, the day with Infinity was filled with magnetic storms, no less. After a mini-accident, I saw a man hit to death on the way home, and already returning from the garage in a car, right in front of me, a pilot in a Kawasaki didn’t give way to a spot at a T-shaped intersection. Fortunately, he did not have time to accelerate. It looked scary from the car, because for a second the pilot was under the car. Fortunately, he is alive, without any fractures, but the motorcycle has been written off. And it was restored only a week ago. This is how it happens too. Friends, be careful and take your time. Upstairs reception is available 24 hours a day.

Owner reviews

I didn’t know about Bajaji at all, I was looking for a budget Chinese one, I looked towards used Japanese ones, but the budget was running out. As a result, I saw the Pulsar in the showroom by chance when I went to look at another motorcycle. I asked the managers, they told me that the bike with a KTM engine is assembled at the Kawasaki plant. Impressed. I sat and tried it on, returned the next day with the money and bought it. I skated for two full seasons, there were no breakdowns, I fell on my side once - the plastic held up. The motor is very reliable. Sergey, Moscow.

I live in India, and I can’t live here without my bike. I bought a new Pulsar last year, during which time I drove 20+ thousand km on the dead Indian roads, during this time I only changed the clutch, it constantly works in severe local traffic jams. The motor does not overheat even in the heat of +40. The speakers are impressive, the brakes are grippy. Anatoly, Delhi.

I bought a Pulsar NS 200 secondhand, with 12k mileage and a lot of tuning - the previous owner drove it twice to the Crimea. It pulls normally with a passenger and cargo, and holds the cruiser confidently at 110 mph. With a height of 182 cm, it is comfortable to sit, the passenger seat is cramped. There are no problems with consumption, nor with spare parts. I use 92nd gasoline, the consumption is higher than stated, but I have never increased more than 3.5 liters. Dmitry, Lobnya.

Review and test drive of Bajaj Pulsar NS 200 NEW

I don’t know about you, but I don’t often notice changes in a woman. A new hairstyle and other efforts to brighten up the unbearableness of our everyday life are dashed by my stubbornness. Didn't you notice anything? No! No! And again no! Same with the new Bajaj Pulsar NS 200. The Indians have worked hard to make the motorcycle more attractive, but most motorcyclists do not recognize the update. But I see.

Firstly, coloring. Instead of motley, tacky prints glued almost on top of the varnish, there are rich glossy colors, combined with stylish semi-matte inserts and strict graphics. They are growing! KTM, of course, remains one step ahead, but Bajaj has grown a lot in terms of styling.

Video version of the Bajaj Pulsar NS200 2019 test drive:

A special plus is the bright stripes on the rims, repeating the main color of the motorcycle. Another refinement of the current update, making the new Pulsar NS 200 look fresher. The colors are also good - yellow and red, black, gray and white, no “rich” metallics, no terrible spots and stripes, in such a suit it is not a shame to enter Europe through a cut-out window.

But the plow is controversial. Yes, a bright yellow spot under the belly makes the appearance more interesting, but in our realities, beauty will quickly break apart on an insensitive curb stone or log. Despite the fact that the NS 200 is a road motorcycle, similar tests are often encountered along its route.

In the new version, the Pulsar has got stylish stripes on the rims

The dashboard has also changed, or rather the backlight glow. Instead of orange-yellow, the background glows blue. Readability remains decent, so this change is not entirely for everyone - personally, I prefer red. Otherwise, everything is familiar - a large analog tachometer, a pair of monochrome monitors and a set of indicator lamps, quite informative and readable even for a motorcycle of a higher class. The Indian roots are only revealed by the bright blue logo, which shouts out over the high beam pictogram; I never cease to be horrified by this feature.

The misplaced blue Bajaj logo can be mistaken for the high beam indicator

In addition, BAJAJ Pulsar NS 200 NEW received new tires. The size is the same, the supplier has changed. Instead of Eurogrip, in which the prefix “euro” did not extend beyond the name, tires are supplied to the assembly line by an even lesser-known company MRF. The changes did not affect the quality, except that they made less noise.

Otherwise the bike is exactly the same as the one I tested a few years ago. At that time, Bajaj was just entering the Russian market and Pulsar was one of the first Indian motorcycles to come to us after Enfield. An interesting motorcycle for reasonable money, not European, but far from Chinese. It was just a little scary to recommend it for purchase, who knows what might come out?

The previous generation NS200 has already proven its reliability and unpretentiousness

It didn't come out. Over the years, only among my friends, several Pulsar owners have appeared, confidently racking up more than one thousand kilometers on the odometer. Therefore, there is no fear in praising the Bajaj Pulsar NS 200 now. Moreover, comparing the current price with the price of 2016, you understand: despite the apparent increase, Pulsar rose in price more slowly than inflation. In other words, it became cheaper.

On the other hand, the motorcycle has not gotten any younger morally: today the lack of ABS on a 200 cc motorcycle is felt more acutely than before, and you want more feedback from the two-piston floating caliper than it can give. But there are no complaints about the suspension - the classic telescope and monoshock absorber with spring preload adjustment are well tuned at the factory and handle unevenness well.

The absence of ABS in 2022 already seems archaic, however, there are no questions about the brakes

The engine is not bad either. The 200cc single-barrel shotgun needs to be constantly turned, but vibrations are not annoying - a slight itch on the steering wheel and footpegs is felt only at high speeds. The motor cannot be called vibration-loaded at all. There are no questions about the design either - three spark plugs per cylinder did not open up new horizons, but they did not make anyone worse either, the main thing is that the engine’s service life remained decent.

Don’t forget about Bajaj’s signature feature – three spark plugs per cylinder

The clutch is light, which is rather good - the hand does not get tired in traffic jams, and the gearbox, the pedal of which needs to be constantly massaged, pleases with the intelligibility of switching. As a result, the Pulsar NS 200 2022 allows you to stay ahead of the traffic at a traffic light and stay confident even on wide and free highways. The chassis also looks good: the steel frame, welded from steel stampings, is not too rigid, but does not float, and the motorcycle as a whole does not seem overly heavy.

Another unusual feature is the fastening of clip-ons through the damper, making vibrations on the steering wheel almost invisible

Lack of charisma? Go to the KTM showroom for a Duke 200/250 or a Husqvarna Vitpilen 401. The Pulsar NS 200 is not about emotions, this motorcycle is designed for daily riding. Comfortable, confident and very versatile, from commuting to short trips. I would like to name some “Logans” or “Solaris” as its automobile analogues, not the most charismatic, but affordable and reliable buckets that can work in a taxi or take you to the country for many years, requiring nothing but gasoline and periodic maintenance, the cost of which doesn't break the budget.

The new Pulsar is available in four color options: black and yellow, black, black and white and bright red

So is BAJAJ Pulsar NS 200 NEW a good motorcycle? Adding up reliability, a reasonable price, convenient credit programs and good characteristics, you get almost an ideal candidate for the role of your first motorcycle. And not for an abstract username, but for a normal, average compatriot with a salary of 35 thousand.

But I wouldn’t take one for myself, because unlike a car, a motorcycle is about emotions, about passion and feelings, with which the cost of maintenance at the dealer and the ability to ride for years without breakdowns fades into the background. But passion never appeared in it: the updated Pulsar NS 200, although it began to look more interesting, does not make you turn around, on the way from the parking lot to the entrance, you will not dream about it at night. Arranges? Then go ahead!

Bajaj Pulsar NS200 2022 Photos:

Conclusion

Bajaj Pulsar is one of the best motorcycles in its price range . It costs more than most “Chinese” ones, but is still much cheaper than “Japanese” and “European” ones, which are similar in characteristics. In addition, Bajaj is a well-known global brand, distributed on all continents and stably supporting all manufactured models with spare parts. This bike is definitely worth the money, don’t even doubt it.
