This model of the “Ural” can be compared to a heavy horse, which, despite bad weather, confidently pulls the assigned load towards the goal. The Ural Tourist stroller model, being in service with the traffic police, has long been loved by drivers, and they have carried this love through the decades. Once upon a time, Ural designers took the German developments “BMW-R 71” as the basis for creating a motorcycle and to this day they are trying to bring their own bit of modernization to them. This leads to the fact that models of this type are incredibly popular abroad. The factory variation of the Ural Tourist motorcycle is the all-wheel drive “Tourist 2WD”.
What is the demand for?
The Ural Tourist motorcycle is an example of a classic heavy trailed motorcycle vehicle, created specifically to easily cover any distance, move over rough terrain and highways, traveling with a passenger. Rationalization decisions of Soviet citizens in the absence of a passenger resolved the issue of extra space quite quickly. The motorized vehicle carried any luggage and various sizes of rural luggage, once again emphasizing the excellent endurance of these vehicles.
Technical characteristics of the Ural Tourist are constantly undergoing factory innovations. The latest models of this class received an engine with a power of 45 horsepower and a volume of 750 cm3.
Nineteen-inch wheels also give confidence when moving. These qualities give the motorcycle a run-up speed of up to one hundred and twenty kilometers per hour. These components only increased the endurance of the motorcycle. With proper care, it is practically eternal.
Standard equipment for all trailers includes a luggage rack mounted on the spare wheel, a parking brake and handles for passenger convenience. The seat is double adjustable and split. The video with the Tourist demonstrates factory proposals for completing the motorcycle. This could be a crankcase or sidecar front or rear protection, a raised exhaust system, a waterproof cover and wheels with high cross-country ability. The original color palette is not large: blue, green, classic black and with the addition of circus.
A world-famous foreign manufacturer also took part in enhancing the reliability of the motorcycle, providing its internal parts with imported components.
Let's look inside

If you look at the photo of the Ural Tourist motorcycle, its dimensions do not seem so voluminous, despite its impressive weight. Length of more than two and a half meters and width of 1.7 meters gives a short height of 1.1 meters. This does not prevent it from turning any journey into a pleasure for the driver, and the stability of the front suspension will not allow you to feel defects in the road surface or fords and broken suburban transport routes. The all-terrain, durable three-wheeled “Uralian” will become a faithful and responsive assistant to a true biker and connoisseur of original domestic cars.
Hello, dear Tubers and site guests. Let me remind you that yesterday some of us had two holidays - the first was BAPTISM, and another one was dedicated to the completion of the first winter motor festival RALLY IN THE URALS 2014, which, in fact, served as a good start for what I would like to talk a little about today.
During the debate, I already talked about my ordering of a new carburetor URAL Tourist T model 2013. The deal with the general distributor of IMZ “Russian Motorcycles” took place on September 18 against the backdrop of a difficult economic situation in Russia, when the opportunity to purchase a new sidecar was dwindling every day. I still managed to pay off with a full bank loan and then the months of waiting for the long-awaited URAL dragged on.
It was delivered by Business Lines from Irbit to Essentuki in 6 days in a package with a volume of almost 5 cubic meters and weighing over 600 kg early in the morning of December 4th. We had to deliver it to a suburban base, where there was a forklift and a manipulator, and where they were very happy about the unexpected incident. On the forklift, as usual, there were no extension arms for a 235 cm long box, so the box was half dragged out of the Ford Transit, and then the manipulator deftly hooked it like a spider and carefully dragged it into his back, and at home he stuck this long-awaited massive one in as best he could. send the parcel halfway to my gate under the canopy. Recalling the facts of the ancient history of Egypt, using the stub of a shovel handle as a roller and a pry bar for inserting the roller, the box, with sufficient effort, was squeezed into the yard and the long-awaited assembly adventure began. But more about them later.
Now, briefly about the new model, now in my use, for those who do not like to read a lot. The lightweight basic and cheapest (conditionally, compared to other models) model URAL-IMZ-8.1041 (now according to PTS Ural L 4001/7) was supposed to come in the expected “empty” version, except for the trunk on the rear wing of the motorcycle, which is in the map the order designated RM as a kind of gift for purchasing the second model (I managed to purchase the first one in 2013 URAL –IMZ-8.1239 Solo St).
But everything turned out to be a little different - the trunk was never installed, according to the map, which corresponded to its image and description on the website, but the stroller had a modern black fabric canopy with a completely different fastening option (these are now only available at IMZ and so far no one of the shopkeepers), the stroller contained two branded rubber mats and was supplied with a modern hydraulic damper, which, as it turned out, with its 16 positions, was very convenient to use for adjusting the tension of the steering column and the softness of the ride, however, not known for its durability.
On the move, it is still the same native URAL - unhurried, sedate, iron to the depth of all details, squat, giving off a black matte sheen that looks very elegant and mysterious when it is covered with a magical pattern of winter frost. As on the Solo St, the right carburetor slightly riches and heats the exhaust more than the left (this is clearly visible from the hot redness on the knees of the exhaust pipes at night), the clutch grabs at the very end of the handle stroke, the drum brakes of the rear wheel and sidecar wheels require serious pressure on the pedal and it’s unlikely that they will stop the wheels, so you can’t do without the front disc Brembo, which has a dead grip, in case of emergency braking. It is clear that all this is regulated, but the factory recommends not to touch anything at all until the 1000 km break-in period.
The engine sound is clear, smooth, slightly muffled gurgling, familiar. If you have a sidecar, the high-frequency vibrations that were on the Solo St at 30, 50 and 70 km/h in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears, respectively, are not so noticeable, which were eliminated after running in the Solo by adjusting the synchronization and mixture quality in carburetors. It also fails when switching from 1st to 2nd gear and a little less when switching from 2nd to 3rd gear (apparently this is their design disease), but then quickly picks up speed due to engine power. You can also hear clicking tapping noises in the cardan and gearbox when switching from high gears to low ones, as a result of different frequencies and torques of the gears.
Maneuverability and handling are quite comfortable, at least for me. For those who have carburetor Urals of the 745 cc engine line, all these nuances are quite familiar, and for me such a motorcycle is familiar and predictable. Well, then I’ll tell you only about the assembly and design, which still causes problems in our area.
Assembly with 3 hands (two of mine and two of my 15-year-old son) took about 6 hours from the moment the box was delivered to the address. Dismantling the box and under the foggy cellophane wrapping you see your guest.
The stroller hangs or half-hangs, supported by two removed wheels, on the side panel, fastened with a hook and several screws.
The front fork is firmly screwed to the floor of a wooden box. When installing the front wheel, you have to remove the brake disc clamps, otherwise the wheel will not be inserted.
While we were mounting it and holding it on the stand, we tipped the bike over a couple of times (it quickly jumps off the central stand if you move the center a little forward, because that’s where the engine and the bulk of the motorcycle are), and holding this 250-kilogram colossus by the front fork on one rear wheel is not so easy, fortunately wooden beams were provided in advance for this.
Of course, we had a lot of trouble with the stroller, mostly because of the inconvenience of its girth and walking on one wheel. But everything ended well in the end. The motorcycle has been assembled!!!
Next, flush the gas tank through the filters, recharge the battery for about 10 hours, and the next day the matte black handsome man growled pleasantly.
The stroller trunk, the stroller fender yoke and the stroller bumper, which were ordered in advance from KBMTS, did not quite fit into the model. URAL Tourist T is good without them. I attached a camouflaged condor cover to the “frog” saddle, refused to use a rack on the rear fender for now, the yoke did not structurally fit on the sidecar fender according to the provided fastenings, and the rack on the sidecar, with empty wings, looked very clumsy.
In general, I decided to put only a stroller bumper on the stock model, a three-point bar on the left to protect the head and cylinder, and maybe also knee protection. As usual, problems arose with registration at the traffic police. The PTS is handwritten and this is always the first reason associated with the double reading of the letters of the numbers. However, IMZ assured that starting from 2015, PTS will be filled out using a computer version. I did not have the factory seal at the bottom of the first sheet of the title, although the seal was higher on the change in model number. This was the reason for refusing to register the motorcycle. I had to urgently contact the factory, they issued a recall of the title and two weeks later they sent it with a stamp. Russian Motorcycles also came to the rescue and sent revised certificates of acceptance and transfer of the vehicle. As a result, instead of December 9, the motorcycle was only registered on December 30 – just in time for the New Year! Considering that from December 24, registration is carried out according to new rules, it was necessary to register from 9 am to 6 pm - when filling out the application on a computer, it turned out that such an IMZ plant, which produces the URAL motorcycle, was not found in the register of the Russian State Traffic Safety Inspectorate. They made a request to Moscow and the operators entered the enterprise into the register. In general, according to the documents submitted to the inspector’s window at 11 am, I received a printed application with permission for inspection only at 16:50. True, then everything went faster - 10 minutes for inspection with a lot of interesting questions and at 18:08 new registration documents with a registration number were already in my hands. I haven’t driven much yet – 80 km on the odometer, and then I’ve had drier days without mud and a couple of snowy days. Burned about 10 liters of gasoline. I often just warm it up so as not to preserve the moth until spring. For now, I drive no more than 60-70 km/h. The motorcycle was long-awaited for me and arrived on time, judging by the discontinuation of the 2013 line of carburetor Urals from production and the crazy prices at dealers for new injection Urals. Let your dreams come true and everyone’s wishes come true!

Ural Tourist - a quick review of the classic Russian heavyweight
The Irbit Motorcycle Plant has been known throughout the world for its Urals since 1961. And, apparently, these motorcycles are still of interest to someone, since to this day they are produced in almost their original form and, moreover, are successfully sold at a price of around 10 thousand US dollars.
It’s difficult to say what motivates the plant’s management - a focus on antiquity, a lack of funds for modification, or a tribute to the tradition of mockery of the domestic consumer of our motor market, but in various modifications, Ural motorcycles coming off the assembly line continue to resemble those distant 60s, when it was fashionable in the city crossed on motorcycles with sidecars. However, let's take a closer look at this two-wheeled product.
All Ural motorcycles are descendants of the M-72 model, which was a copy of the Bavarian R71 (BMW). Thus, the motorcycle is based on a completely viable design (it is not clear why these wasteful Germans went further and began producing modern supersports with luxury tourists and abandoned such a “tenacious” motorcycle as the BMW R71.). Urals are produced with or without sidecars (Ural Tourist is a model with a sidecar), and the sidecar can be equipped with a switchable drive without a differential.
The motorcycles are equipped with a classic four-stroke opposed gasoline internal combustion engine with two cylinders. The total engine volume is 745 cm³ and its power is 40 hp. The entire herd of horses is cardanally transmitted to the rear wheel, controlled by a 4-speed gearbox.
Ural "Tourist" is an all-terrain motorcycle. It goes well both on the highway and off-road. As you understand, our roads are not a problem for it - the device “swallows up potholes and potholes on the go.” Such abilities of this two-wheeler are facilitated by its considerable weight (335 kg of dry weight) and a successful suspension: the long-link front fork at the front can withstand any overload on the road, and the hydraulic brakes will easily stop the Ural “Tourist” from any speed at which it decides and can accelerate (maximum speed is 120 km/h).
Disadvantages of the IMZ-8.103-10 (IMZ-8.103-30, M-67-36) engine of the Ural motorcycle
- Small resource;
- Starting is difficult or does not start at all;
- In hot weather, it gets very hot in low gears;
- Interruptions in the operation of the cylinders;
- Knocking;
- High fuel consumption;
- There are a sufficient number of cases of inaccuracy in the manufacture of the engine crankcase at the cylinder mounting points;
- It is difficult to select timing gears to replace worn ones;
- Oil is leaking at the joints.
More details about the disadvantages...
Unlike engines of analogue imported motorcycles, the service life of the IMZ-8.103-10 engine before repair is small, from 20 to 45 thousand km, which is explained by increased wear of the crank and piston group parts. Increased wear is a consequence of insufficient air cooling, as well as not very good quality of parts (material, manufacturing accuracy).
Difficulty starting or won't start at all
For the most part, starting the IMZ-8.103-10 engine is difficult when the ignition, fuel supply and clearances in the valves of the gas distribution mechanism (between the rods and rocker arms) are not adjusted. The reason may be reduced compression in the cylinders, clogged carburetor jets, water in the carburetors, spark plugs not working, a failed condenser, a lean mixture of fuel coming from the carburetors (too much fuel).
In hot weather it gets very hot in low gears
Unfortunately, air cooling has a detrimental effect on the engine when operating in hot weather. Therefore, in hot weather, when driving in lower gears, overheating should not be allowed, so it is necessary to stop more often to cool the engine. If the engine is new, it can easily overheat.
To a greater extent, interruptions in the operation of the cylinders are caused by the lack of synchronous operation of the cylinders due to different amounts of the supplied combustible mixture, and by a violation in the adjustment of the valves.
The cause of engine knocking may be: pre-ignition; overheat; wear of pistons, rings, fingers; wear of the crankshaft main bearings; valve adjustment is incorrect.
Carburetors are simple and uneconomical, the consumption even according to the instruction manual is like that of a Zhiguli, but in reality it is even higher. During the Soviet era, they didn’t think about efficiency, and drivers poured gasoline into the ground; there was nowhere to put it. These fuel costs are too high for a motorcycle these days.
There are a sufficient number of cases of inaccuracy in the manufacture of the engine crankcase at the cylinder mounting points
This leads to overheating of the cylinder due to the difference in size until the upper plane of the pistons at top dead center aligns with the upper edge of the cylinders. In the event that one of the cylinders overheats and there is no cure for this, as an option it is necessary to check whether the piston at its highest point reaches the upper plane of the cylinder; if not, then this is the problem. To eliminate overheating, it is necessary to achieve symmetrical dimensions, for which purpose the gaskets are removed from under one of the cylinders, and in its place a heat-resistant sealant is used when installing the cylinder. It is possible to install a thinner gasket.
It is difficult to find timing gears to replace worn ones
This problem is associated with the difficulty of finding a set of gears (gears) corresponding to the size group of the crankcase with the dimensional indices. There are a lot of these gears on sale, but there are no markings (indices) on them, or there is a designation, but it is not suitable. You can read about the correspondence of gear indexes and crankcase size groups here.

What you need to know about the IMZ engine when buying a Ural motorcycle | Weak motor Model drawings were transferred to the Zaporozhye Small Car Plant, and some of the designers from IMZ who took part in the development of the car were transferred to the Melitopol Motor Plant. Having half the weight compared to the Ural, with almost the same power and much greater productivity, Husqvarna 365 began to evenly outshine Russian chainsaws, despite the higher price. |
