The best tires for your motorcycle
Founded in 2010, BikeTires sells motorcycle tires from global manufacturers. The store's assortment includes only fresh motorcycle tires, which provide maximum safety and comfort on the roads. The company is developing successfully; in 2016, the first free motorcycle tire fitting service was opened in the capital. Here, the craftsmen install purchased motorcycle tires on clients’ bikes, additionally carry out diagnostics of the condition of the motorcycle equipment, as well as maintenance and repair.
All motorcycle tires in our online store are no older than 3 years. This approach guarantees the quality and reliability of the motor tires that we offer you to buy.
Choosing the right motorcycle tires
Motorcycle tires are selected according to several criteria. Owners of two-wheelers often turn to consultants for professional assistance. When selecting products yourself, rely on the following factors:
- Tire size. To find out the standard size, you need to look at the technical passport of the vehicle (the data is also indicated in the product card on the website). In the document, the manufacturer gives recommendations on choosing a tire based on the bike’s parameters.
- Quality. The company offers only certified and tested products recommended by equipment manufacturers. The quality is confirmed by certificates of conformity and a quality guarantee.
- Constructive. Based on this criterion, 2 types of motorcycle tires are determined - diagonal and radial. The difference lies in the direction of the cord threads. Bias tires use layers laid perpendicular to each other for the carcass. This increases their carrying capacity. In radial tires, the cord layers are located at right angles to the direction of travel, which allows you to reach speeds above 240 km/h and provides more precise handling.
- Class. Motorcycle tires are divided into categories - racing, sports, touring, chopper (for cruisers), enduro, motocross. All tires, except cross and racing ones, are designed for driving on public roads.
We pay special attention to the tread pattern. Modern tires are not as critical to their tread as they were, say, 10 years ago. This is due to modern chemistry in the composition of motorcycle tires. For example, silicon dioxide allows the tire to heat up quickly and provides excellent grip even on wet asphalt. Therefore, the choice of tread pattern, if these are not off-road tires, is rather a matter of taste.
A few questions about motorcycle tires (1 photo)
Why are the tires on a motorcycle "wrong"?
When asked about this, they mean the “herringbone” of the tread, which on cars is always directed in the direction of rotation of the wheel, and on motorcycles - vice versa.
This is normal, and in this case correct, but only for the front wheel. The rear tire is oriented quite traditionally. The explanation for this sounds both simple and complex at the same time. The bottom line is that multidirectional forces act on the front and rear wheels of a motorcycle - braking and accelerating, respectively. And given that a motorcycle tire must perform equally well across a wide range of lean angles across the motorcycle (and the tire itself), using a multi-directional tread pattern is the only way to ensure even tire wear. And in general, the phrase “tilt angle” is a key parameter when creating motorcycle tires and makes them so different from car tires.
So how are motorcycle tires different from car tires?
The size of the so-called contact patch - the point at which the tire comes into contact with the coating - and its location. When driving, a car tire is always perpendicular to the plane of the road, resting against it with the entire width of its tread. If deviations are possible, for example in tight turns, then they are very insignificant - compared to a motorcycle, of course. The motorcycle either rides straight or leans in a turn, and along with it the angle of inclination and its tires change. Therefore, motorcycle tires must cling to the road equally well, regardless of the angle of inclination, and therefore their transverse profile is initially made round, and not rectangular, like on cars.
Because of this feature, motorcycle tires are practically not subject to hydroplaning. Unless they are very worn out, of course. The contact patch of a motorcycle tire with the surface is very small, so a “wedge” of water that lifts a car wheel above the road simply cannot form. The only problem is that as the profile of a motorcycle tire wears out, it tends to become “car-like.”
How long does a motorcycle tire last?
About the same as a car. But there is one subtlety: if you have a heavy motorcycle and you ride a lot in a straight line, then the central part of the tire wears out faster than its edges. In such cases, the tire is said to “go square” or “square up.” In particularly advanced cases, this can be seen even with the naked eye. And if you run your finger across the tire in a transverse direction, you can even feel a sharp step between the central flat and rounded side parts of the tread. On the move, it feels like this: at first, when entering a turn, the motorcycle refuses to lean and you have to apply additional force to force it to change its trajectory. And when you literally “pushed” this step, it, already on the round part of the tread, unexpectedly sharply tilts more than you expect.
It's almost impossible to fix this. Yes, experienced motorcyclists have the concept of “rounding the tires” - when they try to ride more at high angles of inclination in order to crush the resulting step on the asphalt. But, firstly, in practice this can only be realized on the race track. Secondly, for this you need to have the appropriate driving skills. Therefore, it is better to replace a “square” tire. Even if the remaining tread depth still significantly exceeds the established traffic regulations of 0.8 mm.
How else do you understand that it’s time to change your tires?
Tires should be changed immediately in case of mechanical damage: hernias on the sidewall, cuts or cracks. Everything is clear with hernias and cuts. But where do the cracks come from? They are most often seen on used motorcycles from America or Japan that have been sitting on the auction floor for many months under the scorching sun. The tire dries out and cracks. At first glance, this does not have much effect on its properties, but it is better not to risk it and change the tire to a new one. Also, an unambiguous signal for replacement is the appearance of the structure of the internal cord or its threads on the surface. If this happens, then the tire frame is worn out and close to destruction.
Is it true that motorcycle tires have an expiration date?
It is believed that yes. Experienced motorcyclists, when purchasing new tires, always look at when they were made - this can be determined by a special stamp on the sidewall. And sellers even often sell tires from older years at a big discount. What happens to a tire over the years? They say that it dries out, loses its elasticity and begins to cling to the asphalt worse. They say... But tests conducted by experts from Moto magazine did not confirm this theory. There were no noticeable differences in the behavior of two identical tires released this year and eight years ago (both, of course, with zero mileage). Therefore, whether to believe in talk about the expiration date is up to you.
Why are motorcycle tires so expensive?
Prices for good motorcycle tires are quite high. Noticeably higher than for automobiles. This is explained by the fact that a tire intended for use on two-wheeled vehicles is a technically more complex product. Firstly, it has higher requirements for the quality of the rubber compound itself. It must provide reliable grip on the road even with a very small contact patch, which is due to the rounded profile of the tire. Secondly, a motorcycle tire must be lightweight. The war on excess weight is perhaps the main headache for motorcycle developers. And reducing the weight of a tire is only possible by thinning its walls and optimizing the structure of the inner cord. And, at the same time, without compromising strength!

Strength and reliability are another important parameter. If something happens to a car tire at high speed, the car will still have 3 more support points, which increases the chances of a favorable outcome. On a motorcycle, if one tire fails, there is only one fulcrum left and an accident is inevitable.
To what pressure should motorcycle tires be inflated?
As a rule, this parameter is indicated in the instructions for your motorcycle. But if there are no instructions, you can focus on a certain average value - somewhere between 2.5 and 3 atm. If the pressure is less than 2 atm, then the tire may fly off the rim when turning. If it’s more than 3 atm, that’s also bad! Due to the reduced contact patch, road traction is greatly reduced and handling is noticeably deteriorated. Therefore, you need to carefully monitor the pressure in your motorcycle tires.
By the way, many new motorcycles come from the factory with overinflated tires - this is done on purpose so that the tire is less deformed during storage and transportation. But you can’t drive like that! The dealer's task is to set the correct pressure during the pre-sale preparation process.
Can I install tires of a different size on my motorcycle that differ from the manufacturer's recommendations?
It's possible, but it's better not to. Perhaps this will make the motorcycle look more impressive, but most likely, such a modification will lead to a significant deterioration in handling. The most striking example is cruisers (choppers) with a wide rear wheel. Customizers go to great lengths to “shove” the “skating rink” wider back. Up to and including replacing the pendulum, changing the frame geometry and reworking the entire drive system. The wheels are so wide that you have to push the drive belt or chain to the side! It turns out beautifully, but on the road such a motorcycle completely refuses to turn and only goes in a straight line. In order to tilt it and direct it to the desired trajectory, you have to put in a lot of effort.
What if you put off-road tires on a road bike?
They do that too. But, basically, either for beauty or to solve some specific problems. For example, it is now fashionable to install motocross tires with developed lugs on so-called scramblers or cafe racers. But you won’t get any pleasure from driving on hard surfaces on such tires. On asphalt, the tires will make noise, the motorcycle will vibrate, comfort and handling will drop sharply, and braking performance will deteriorate. But if for some reason you have to ride a regular motorcycle more on dirt than on paved roads, then off-road tires are the way to go!
Tires can fundamentally change the character of a motorcycle. Put regular road tires on an off-road enduro, and you will get a supermoto - an excellent option for aggressive driving through the urban jungle. Sharp, fast and maneuverable.
Are specialized sports tires better than regular tires?
Better. But only on a closed track, and per race. There are, of course, fans of riding sportbikes shod with special racing tires around the city. But, firstly, it is very expensive - such tires are much more expensive than regular ones and wear out very quickly. And secondly, it is unsafe. For example, in the rain, “dry” slicks will be very slippery. And rainwater will quickly wear down to a cord on dry abrasive asphalt...
Which tires are better - tubed or tubeless?
On motorcycles, as on cars, both options are possible. But tires that require the installation of a tube are becoming less and less common every day. And in almost all respects they lose to their tubeless competitors. First of all, they are heavier when assembled, and when punctured, they almost instantly lose pressure and can be disassembled. In principle, there is only one reason for motorcyclists today to use tubed tires - if the motorcycle is equipped with spoked wheels. Because the rim with the spokes inserted is not sealed. And if you mount tubeless tires on it, they will not hold pressure. True, there are already a number of solutions to this problem: for example, a specially designed rim with spoke attachment points shifted to the very edges, or sealing tapes that are pulled over the rim before installing the tire.
In other cases, it is better to buy a modern tubeless tire and enjoy the progress.
How are motorcycle tires repaired if damaged or punctured?
The easiest answer is no! Because manufacturers of motorcycle tires strongly do not recommend using the “fungi” or “flagella” familiar to motorists. And repairing side cuts is completely prohibited. Why? It's all about reducing the reliability of the tire. And if you act strictly according to science, then a tire punctured by a nail or self-tapping screw must be removed from the rim and vulcanized. A tire with a damaged sidewall should be thrown away immediately.
But what if you “caught a nail” somewhere along the way? There is only one solution: install a non-recommended “flagellum” and drive with it to the nearest decent tire shop, where you can solve the problem according to all the rules. Or continue driving further, but at your own peril and risk.
In general, a repair kit with rubber “tape” and a tool for installing them will not be at all out of place on a long journey. Just practice in advance (for example, on an old tire) how to use them. Experience shows that you most often have to repair a flat tire yourself at night, in the rain and by the light of your mobile phone. Are you sure you can handle it without preparation?
13. Are there winter tires for motorcycles?
Yes, they do happen, although it doesn’t happen often. Officially, in our country you can only buy winter motorcycle tires from the Turkish company Anlas. Their Winter Grip Plus model is a favorite among big touring enduro riders. Owners of lighter motorcycles, if they need to ride in winter, usually use toothy cross-country rubber “checkered”. In the snow it behaves quite adequately, but on bare ice it won’t be very fun...
What happens if you put a car tire on a motorcycle?
Many people really ask this question. Actually, it's better not to do that. An exception is a motorcycle with a sidecar, which does not need to be tilted, especially if you have to travel very long distances. In this case, car tires last significantly longer than motorcycle tires. If, of course, you can find the right size. The same applies to trikes - car tires are installed on their rear axle at the factory.
There are also people who like to install car tires on the rear wheel of heavy cruiser motorcycles. If you put such a tire on a motorcycle rim, it will acquire a semicircular profile and behave more or less acceptable on the road. For long trips on straight roads it will do. But there are still more disadvantages than advantages: handling will inevitably deteriorate, and the load on the rear suspension elements will increase. Therefore, it is better not to experiment.
