Wiring diagram for IZH Planet 2: modification of the standard electrical circuit and ignition system

A new era in the history of the motorcycle plant was marked by the launch of the IZH series. In 1965, a new model appeared, differing from its predecessor in increased engine power and new alloy wheels.

Everything else - the IZH Planet 2 wiring diagram, rear axle design, frame and controls were borrowed from the previous model.

Also on the factory assembly line appeared a model with a two-cylinder power unit, called “Jupiter” (see also wiring diagram IZ Jupiter 3).

It is noteworthy that in the future all modifications of these motorcycles were carried out in pairs:

  1. The standard circuit of IZ Planet 2 was modernized - the wiring diagram of IZ Jupiter 2 was also changed;
  2. The Planet models were transitioning from 6V to 12V - the electrical wiring of the IZ Jupiter 2 also underwent similar replacements.

Forced modernization

Motorcycles of the IZH Planet 2 brand turned out to be of quite high quality. And although the plant stopped producing them in 1971, many copies are still in service.

And difficulties with spare parts force owners to upgrade motorcycles:

  1. Adapt parts from other models of the IZh family;
  2. Use spare parts from motorcycles from other manufacturers;
  3. Make the necessary parts yourself.

Remaking the standard electrical circuit

Do-it-yourself repairs of standard electrical wiring and its consumers cause particular difficulties:

  1. Incandescent lamps for dimensions, brake lights and head lights;
  2. Ignition coils;
  3. Spark plugs;
  4. High voltage wires.

For reference: modern motorcycles have long switched to 12 V, while motorcycles of previous years were universally equipped with a 6V electrical circuit.

Reworking the ignition system

Motorcycles of the IZh family (for example, in the Planet 3 wiring) have always experienced difficulties with the ignition system. Therefore, they have always been the object of close interest on the part of owners who conducted endless experiments in fine-tuning the vehicle.

The method presented below for replacing the standard ignition system with elements from the Voskhod and Minsk motorcycles was considered successful by the motorcycle owner community.

The upgrade instructions are as follows:

  1. Purchase a generator from Minsk or Voskhod motorcycles with a voltage of 14V and a rated power of 65 watts (90 watts);
  2. An adapter washer is made to install a new generator on the engine;
  3. A new ignition coil is purchased (possibly from Minsk or Voskhod).

Tip: if the wiring has lasted long enough, you should also change it to avoid future problems. The IZH 2126 wiring diagram can help in your search.

Drawing of an adapter washer for installing a non-standard generator

It is best to order the adapter washer from a lathe to achieve high quality. The cost of such work is small. After manufacturing, the washer must be installed correctly so that its surface fits tightly to the engine.

Installed adapter washer on which the new generator will be installed

Tip: When installing the generator on the adapter washer, you must ensure that it is completely seated. If the generator housing is not completely seated on the washer, the rotor will catch on the stator as it rotates, which will lead to its failure.

What is the value of this model

Such increased attention to the IZH Planet 2 model is caused by the fact that:

  1. in total, just over 246 thousand were produced;
  2. and there are few surviving copies left;
  3. which only increases its value among collectors .

According to Izhmash, only 246 thousand Planet 2 models were produced throughout the USSR

Therefore, it is a great success to find preserved motorcycles in garages and sheds of villages and towns (as in the photo below). Moreover, if the previously discussed price has not changed, and the owners give you a bag of spare parts in addition, consider that you have hit the “jackpot” .

Fortunately, you can still find “live” IL with original parts. True, only in this state

Ignition adjustment

After replacing the generator, it is necessary to set the correct ignition timing.

To do this, we sequentially perform the following steps:

  1. We turn the crankshaft until the piston reaches top dead center (TDC);
  2. We lower it further down by 3.0 mm;
  3. We center the generator on the adapter washer so that the slot on the rotor is aligned with the inductive sensor;
  4. Using a feeler gauge, set the gap between the sensor and the slot. It should be 0.3-0.5 mm.

Model features

Therefore, even today, enthusiasts retrieve famous motorcycles from dusty sheds and garages, restore them to their original form and, as before, give the spirit of freedom to their owners.

Taking a motorcycle out of the woodshed, there is hope that it will return to service again

What is especially pleasing is the interest of modern youth in domestic technology. This article is intended for them and their parents who had the opportunity to ride Izhaks, Jupiters and Planets .

Electrical diagram

The IZH Jupiter 3 model appeared as an improved example of the previously produced IZH Jupiter 2. For the first time in domestic practice, a motorcycle received turn signals, and therefore the wiring diagram of the IZH Jupiter 3 has undergone changes.

In particular:

  1. There was a separate cable running under the gas tank and seat to the rear turn signals;
  2. For the model with a side trailer, a second cable was laid and attached to the stroller frame.

The new model is based on the proven electrical circuit of its predecessor.
The photo above also shows the wiring on the IZ Jupiter 3 in the version with a sidecar.

They asked from her:

  • Lamp (yellow) for trailer brake lights (indicated as 2a in the diagram);
  • Lamp (red) for the rear marker light of a trailer (3a);
  • Right direction indicator on the trailer fender (11);
  • Trailer front marker light (white) (17).

One can argue for a long time about the quality of products of the domestic motorcycle industry, but a motorcycle in capable hands required only preventive maintenance and adjustment. And the era of shortages forced owners to show miracles of ingenuity, modifying unreliable components and assemblies of their two-wheeled horses.

For reference: Izh Jupiter 3 deservedly received the Quality Mark. This was evidenced by a sign on the frame - in the photo below. Today, finding such a motorcycle without “crooked” improvements is a great success for collectors.

In comparison with imported “disposable motorcycle junk”, Planet 3 in capable hands served for decades

Self-improvement

Many were not satisfied with the capricious ignition of the motorcycle (see the article wiring diagram for IZH Planet 3), so the wiring diagram for IZH Jupiter 3 was often changed from 6 to 12 volt. This was facilitated by the appearance of the 281.3701 generator produced by the Izhevsk Motor Plant, which was much better and more reliable than the standard G36M7. Those owners who were not able to get it had to upgrade the existing one.

For this:

  1. A steel adapter plate was machined, allowing 12 internals to be installed in the generator;
  2. The right engine cover was purchased or exchanged from older models Jupiter 5 or Planet 5.

Motorcycle service

Unlike other models, both domestic and foreign (see the article for the wiring diagram of the Delta moped), the IZH Jupiter 3 is distinguished by its enviable survivability.

Here are a few instructions for resuscitating a motorcycle that has stood motionless:

  • It is enough to replace or clean the candles yourself;
  • Adjust the ignition;
  • Replace high-voltage wires from the coils with spark plugs;
  • Change the engine oil;
  • Install a new battery or charge the existing one.

A modern scheme, more understandable to the younger generation.
And it will start and drive. And this is its distinctive feature, which is well known to the generation of the 80s. You can restore the old paintwork, reupholster the seat, or polish the chrome parts to a shine later, the main thing is its durability.

Advice: wiring IZ Jupiter 3 after long-term storage also requires close attention. Inspect it for abrasions and damage to the insulation. If any, replace the wires. Don't repair, just replace. How to do this - see the article Original Java 634 wiring.

In the photo, the restored IZ Jupiter 3 (on the right) looks no worse than modern models.
In the video below you can get acquainted with the features of this model. It should be noted that the cost of restoration is quite affordable for most, and the difficulty lies only in the lack of spare parts and the need to modify those found from other models.

Part 1. Part 2. Finally, the long-awaited and certainly the most enjoyable time in restoring a motorcycle has arrived: assembly! Assembly for me is those moments when you screw a couple of shiny bolts onto a freshly painted part, sit in the garage with a cup of coffee and admire it! Lots of photos!

Gradually, the parts laid out around the garage turned into a motorcycle. As soon as I put it on wheels, it was already an achievement; now I can roll it around the garage, and not have to carry an increasingly heavy frame every day :-)

It came down to the wiring. I didn’t bother with the old one, it was in terrible condition, especially since I planned to convert the equipment to 12V and preferably with electronic ignition. I purchased the necessary 12V equipment, wires of different colors and sections, and off I went. Wiring as part of the build was also a lot of fun for me, I love fiddling around with wires.

During the assembly process, I couldn’t wait to see how it would look, and periodically threw on a tank with a seat, creating the appearance of a finished motorcycle

Sometimes I even dabbled with light bulbs, then it seemed like the wast was already ready! Electronic ignition was not easy, those who switched know that it’s all about the adapter plate for the 12V generator, which does not fit into the seat of the Jupiter-3 crankcase! So I suffered with her! There seem to be some problems; these faceplates are sold ready-made on the market without any problems. I bought one, but it didn’t fit when the generator was installed, the cells for the brushes didn’t match the armature! People advised that ideally it should be carved from a single piece of aluminum, but I couldn’t find a block of that size. As a result, I calculated what size the adapter faceplate for my crankcase-generator should be and gave it to a turner for modification, purchased on the market. After that everything was no problem!

My faceplate dimensions

The original ignition switch had to be changed a little; charge control on 12V equipment worked on a different principle

The moment came when I realized that I had everything ready for the first launch!:-) The ignition is set, there is a spark, the carburetor is filled with fuel, let's try it! Of course it didn’t start right away! But he didn’t show off for long; from about the tenth kick he started groaning! HOORAY! In fact, the motorcycle was already ready to even ride, but it was winter outside, so I didn’t do it. Until spring, I completed all the little things, tightening, tuning, and as soon as the weather was pretty good outside, I took it for a ride around my native village, you should have seen the looks of the elder generation when I was driving it)))) I then had such a feeling of joy and pride at the same time!:-) Feelings just like in childhood, smiling from ear to ear. Several photos in the field.:-)

The motorcycle was restored without any purpose, I just really wanted to plunge into this world, and now it is used for leisurely rides for the soul! For everyday driving there is a car and a Hornet. Each mot delights and gives sensations in its own way! As always, there are a couple of unfinished little things left, such as attaching new emblems, connecting the speedometer cable, but now the mood is somehow not the same, everything is complicated here and there is no mood or desire to do anything, but I wrote the post. There are documents for Jupiter, but as it turned out, it was written off according to MREO a long time ago; it is possible to restore it to registration, but it is difficult. There's no time for that now. In the first two parts, they repeatedly asked about the budget, and so at that time, summer 2013 - winter 2014, about 8000-9000 UAH were spent, which is approximately $1000-1100 at the previous exchange rate. And finally, a little comparison

Thank you all for your attention :-)
