Having looked at the colorful diagrams for Izh Planet5 and other motorcycles, I decided to “tune” (in the Paint.net graphic editor) the diagram of my native IZHP4K. NOTE. On the IZHP4K motorcycle, the rear light of the sidecar is connected by connecting the green and red wires from the rear light of the motorcycle (shown with a dotted line in the diagram). The sidecar turn signal is connected to replace the right rear turn signal of the motorcycle. The right front turn signal must be turned off.

While maintaining much of the continuity with previous models, the IZH Planet 4 motorcycle featured new design changes. And first of all, this is 12 volt equipment, which previously appeared on two-cylinder Jupiter models.

New items also include improved appearance, European lighting technology and a new ignition switch.

Features of electrical equipment

The wiring diagram of IZH Planet 4 is almost completely copied from the Jupiter model that was the first to appear on the factory assembly line.

The only differences are that:

  1. The Planet family has one working cylinder, and accordingly the ignition system is designed to ensure its operation;
  2. The IZ Jupiter family, unlike the Planet, has 2 working cylinders; accordingly, the wiring diagram has additional repeating elements.

A more advanced generator began to be installed on the new model of the Izhevsk Motor Plant, capable of serving the increased needs of the electrical equipment system, in contrast to the wiring diagram of the IZH Planet 3.

Among the design features it is worth highlighting:

  1. Eight coils placed in the stator slots;
  2. Serial connection diagram;

  4. Original fastening to the stator, made using washers and bent petals.

For reference: The rotor is made in a traditional manner, has the design of an eight-pole magnet placed in a special magnetic alloy. Installed on the cone of the right axle and secured with a segment key and an M7 bolt. The generator stator is located under the cover on the right side of the engine and is secured with three bolts.

To identify faults with your own hands, you need an ohmmeter or a universal tester, which can be used to measure the resistance of the windings:

  1. If the values ​​of the measured resistances differ significantly, it is necessary to inspect the generator stator to detect broken winding leads;
  2. The reason for unstable operation may also be their short circuit. If possible, identified faults are eliminated by soldering.

Brief general information

The engine that was installed on the IZH Planet-4 motorcycle had quite a lot of thrust. At the same time, the work was carried out at relatively low speeds. It was possible to attach a side trailer (passenger or cargo type) or a universal module directly to the motorcycle itself. In addition, it was possible to attach additional knee pads and a trunk. In order to reduce the effort when disengaging the clutch, IZH Planet-4 uses a multi-plate clutch. Together with the air cleaner, vibration dampers for the cylinder fins of increased volume help reduce the noise level produced by the motorcycle. The front wheel of this model is equipped with a hydropneumatic suspension with a disc brake.

The stator is installed on the right half of the engine crankcase and secured with three bolts. The frame is made of special sheet steel. It has 18 tooth-shaped places for winding phase windings. The phase winding is made of one solid wire with a diameter of 0.9 mm and is wound on six teeth. Each tooth has 20 turns of copper wire wound around it. There are six teeth in total on the winding, so 120 turns are wound. There are three such windings. The connection of the windings is made with a star. The terminals of the phase windings are connected to the terminals of the comb.

The generator stator is covered with an aluminum alloy cover. There are special places on the cover and threaded holes where the carbon brush holder is installed. A breaker with a capacitor to produce a spark. Special comb for connecting wires.

Modernization

The production of the IZH Planet-4 motorcycle has undergone a number of changes. Thus, the design used a generator whose operation is based on permanent magnets. This part also has a contactless ignition system, which, in turn, operates independently of the battery. In addition, the engine itself is equipped with a special separation-type lubrication system pump. This eliminated the need to use a gasoline-oil mixture. The IZH Planeta-4 motorcycle is equipped with a four-speed gearbox with an eccentric mechanism for disengaging the clutch and a more powerful motor chain. The front disc brake is hydraulically actuated, and the suspension system uses improved shock absorbers. In addition, changes also affected the kinematics of the brake drive for the wheel located at the rear.

Technical features of the motorcycle

Basic data: the distance between the wheel axles is 1,450 mm; With an absolute load and tire pressure within normal limits, the ground clearance is 135 mm. The dimensions are as follows: length - 2200 mm, width - 810 mm, height - 1200 mm, weight (dry) - 158-165 kg, maximum load capacity - 170 kg, including the load on the trunk equal to 20 kg. The power of the motorcycle is 22 horsepower. At an optimal speed of 90 km/h, fuel consumption is 5 liters per hundred kilometers.

Engine characteristics

The IZH Planet-4 motorcycle is equipped with a 2-stroke engine with a cylinder size of 72 mm and a volume of 3,346 cm3. The lubrication system is separate, equipped with an oil pump that doses the flow depending on the frequency at which the crankshaft rotates and the load engine. There is an electronic non-contact type ignition system with regulation (automatic) of the ignition advance depending on the frequency with which the engine crankshaft rotates. However, it does not depend on the battery. For operation, it is advisable to use gasoline with an octane rating of at least 76. The engine uses an air cooling system. Transmission from the engine to the clutch is carried out using a double-row bushing drive chain.

The four-speed gearbox is three-shaft and is located in the same block with the engine. The gear ratio to the clutch from the engine is 2.17, while to the rear wheel from the gearbox it is 2.33. A little more detail about the remaining gear ratios: 1st - 3.88; 2nd – 2.01; 3rd – 1.26; 4th – 1.0. The suspension of the front part of the motorcycle is telescopic type, and the rear part is of a lever type, with shock absorbers (spring-hydraulic). The rear brakes are drum type, the front brakes are hydraulically driven disc.

For reference: the windings on the three-phase generators of the IZH Planet-4 motorcycle are connected in a “star” or “delta” type, and the rectifier is installed as a separate unit, and the electrical wiring is directly connected to it.

Generator care

Comes down to visual inspection and cleaning.

First of all, you need to pay attention to parts subject to wear. The carbon brushes of the current collector wear out faster than other parts. They require regular inspection and are replaced if worn. The slip rings of the slip ring must be kept clean. You cannot clean it with sandpaper or needle files. You can use the finest glass sandpaper.

The breaker contacts are periodically checked for the gap value specified in the instructions. For Planet 4 the gap is 0.4 - 0.6 mm. In case of burning, the contacts are leveled and then polished to a mirror finish.

Head lighting

In European countries, there is a requirement that motorcycles and similar equipment must be equipped with a battery with permanent magnet generators. There are no such restrictions in the Russian Federation. With the generator installed, the IZH Planet-4 motorcycle does not require a removable current source to start the engine. Accordingly, this is why the basic package does not include a rechargeable battery.

The headlight circuit consists of a rear brake light, a parking light, and a blue warning light. The motorcycle is equipped with a speedometer with mileage indicators (daily and total), a tachometer, indicator lamps for turn signals and head lights, a voltmeter and an engine temperature sensor. The wiring diagram of the IZH Jupiter 4 had one more difference from motorcycles of previous years of production, for example, from the wiring diagram of the IZH Jupiter 3.

It was equipped with a non-contact electronic ignition, which improved all performance characteristics:

Setting the ignition timing

Unlike the classic contact ignition circuit, as in the Java 350 electrical wiring, where the contact opening time can be determined and adjusted using a signal light, such methods are not applicable in a contactless ignition system (BSI).

Caution: The IZ Jupiter 4 wiring is not intended for testing the high-voltage wire for a spark - only on a spark plug leaning against ground. The fact is that too large a distance of the wire from the ground will provoke a voltage surge in the secondary winding of the coil, and the discharge will disable it. As a rule, such an “experiment” also disables the output transistor of the switch, which automatically leads to its failure.

To set the ignition timing it is necessary:

  1. Connect a voltmeter with your own hands to the circuit with the Hall sensor. Connect the “+” wire to contact No. 2, and connect the “-” wire to No. 3,
  2. turn the crankshaft to the position corresponding to the moment of spark formation in one of the cylinders,
  3. turn on the ignition,
  4. turn the modulator until the voltmeter readings change,
  5. the voltage surge corresponds to the moment of discharge of the BSG,
  6. fix the position of the modulator using the fastening bolt,
  7. repeat the operation for the second cylinder.

Tip: Use a voltmeter with a resistance of 10-50 kOhm, equipped with a scale of at least 15 V. This voltmeter will allow you to read the readings more accurately.

Electronic switch

A special feature of the contactless ignition system is an electronic switch. In fact, on all motorcycles and cars without exception, equipped with a three-phase asynchronous generator with electromagnetic excitation, it is absolutely the same.

Therefore, installing VAZ switches on motorcycles is not a whim or “stupidity”, but a completely reasonable approach from an electrical point of view:

  1. their operating principle is the same,
  2. operating parameters are similar,
  3. Overall dimensions allow installation on a motorcycle in a tool box.

For reference: on top of that, the price of “foreign” switches is cheaper due to their mass availability. Whereas on IZh Planet and Jupiter switches are a rather scarce spare part.

Voltage regulator

Another feature distinguishes IZ Jupiter 4 is the BPV14-10 rectifier and voltage regulator unit:

  1. It measures the voltage in the network,
  2. When falling (low generator speed), the relay increases the supply of bias current,
  3. When increasing (high generator speed), the relay reduces the bias.

As a result of such work, the voltage in the on-board network of the motorcycle is constantly kept at the level of 14-14.5 V. This was done specifically so that the battery does not participate in the sparking process and is constantly charged.

How to make the transition to contactless SZ? When the engine is switched off, the indicator lights up, and when the engine is running, it goes out.

Generator rotor 281.3701

The generator rotor 1 is located inside the stator. It is installed on the crankshaft using bolt 3 and key 5. An excitation winding 6 is wound on the rotor core with a copper wire with a diameter of 0.56 mm, 600 turns are made. The winding resistance is approximately 6.4 ohms. For contact with the winding, two copper rings 2 and carbon brushes are used. They perform the work of a current collector.

How to remove the generator rotor 281.3701

The breaker cam 4 is installed in one position on the rotor shaft in a special socket and secured with a mounting bolt 3. Under this cam there is a thread that is intended for removing the rotor from the crankshaft. To remove the rotor, you need to screw the screw from the chain disassembly device into the thread. The device is located in the motorcycle tool. If there is no screw, you can use a regular bolt with an M10 thread. The only condition for the thread must be at least 70 mm. Turn until the screw rests on the crankshaft. Then we apply more force to tighten it, and the rotor is removed from the shaft.

Battery

The battery in the motorcycle is low-power. The motorcycle does not have a starter, so its task is only to supply voltage to the ignition system and the generator excitation winding during starting. Thanks to the battery, designed for 12 volts, a stable start of the fifth Planet is ensured; up to the third model, the wiring was 6 volt, and the ignition was not always clear.

Possible battery malfunctions:

  1. Mechanical damage - housing, plates, leakage of electrolyte.
  2. Loss of electrolyte density is determined by measurements using a hydrometer.
  3. The short circuit of the plates in the banks is detected by measuring the resistance.
  4. It is possible that the connection is not correct, minus not on the body (frame) of the motorcycle - all the electronics will not work.

The electrical circuit of IZH 3, 4, 5 and 6 is quite simple and any driver can figure it out in order to repair it with his own hands if necessary.

On both IZH 5 and 6 bikes there may be problems with the sound signal; it may sound weaker. To adjust it, you need to loosen the lock nut, turn on the ignition and use a screwdriver to adjust the tone. Once the desired tone is achieved, the locknut must be tightened.

Maintenance Features

Often during operation it is necessary to correctly set the gap between the contacts of the breaker. To do this, you need tools and a diagram to see which elements need to be dismantled.

The algorithm of actions is as follows:

  1. place the motorcycle on the stand;
  2. turn on neutral;
  3. unscrew the spark plug from the cylinder;
  4. remove the engine crankcase cover;

  1. turn the crankshaft until the contacts are as open as possible;
  2. using a screwdriver, loosen the locking screw;
  3. using a special feeler gauge, set the gap to 0.35-0.45 mm and fix it with a screw;
  4. we collect everything in reverse sequence;

  1. turn on the ignition and start the engine. Its stable operation at idle indicates that the adjustment has been correctly performed.

In general, all the wiring of IZH Planet 5 is very easy to do with your own hands.

The need for such work often arises when operating a motorcycle:

  1. in wet weather, driving in the rain for a long time (oxidation or dampness of electrical contacts);
  2. when traveling over rough terrain, replete with vegetation and bushes (mechanical damage to wiring);
