On September 8, 2011, at the X-Arena cross-country track near Moscow, it held a presentation of the new flagship of the all-terrain vehicle model line - Stels ATV 800 GT.
Like other ATVs of the domestic Stels brand, the ATV 800 was developed jointly with the Chinese company HiSUN and is a utilitarian SUV with a full double seat and an extended wheelbase (1490 mm), as indicated by the GT prefix in the name.
The overall dimensions are not amazing. 2480 mm long and 1280 mm wide – there are larger all-terrain vehicles. However, two riders in full gear can sit quite comfortably. And a further increase in size from the point of view of cross-country ability is not justified: the ramp angle decreases, the weight increases, especially since the ATV 800 GT is doing quite well with it. A little less than 300 kg of dry weight for a two-seater device is a good indicator. The portrait of a noble “rogue” is completed by 410 mm of ground clearance.
Under the false tank is a V-shaped two-cylinder 800 cc liquid-cooled engine, migrated here from the side-by-side model Stels UTV 800H. The engine is equipped with fuel injection and produces an impressive power of 56 hp. Torque is transmitted to the wheels through a belt-driven variator.
The transmission modes deserve special mention, the number of which can impress the most discerning buyer. The ATV has the ability to travel on rear-wheel drive with either a free or a forcibly locked cross-axle differential using a button on the steering wheel. All-wheel drive is rigidly connected; there is no center differential. And the front gearbox has a self-locking one. And of course, any of the modes can be used together with a reduction gear in the transfer case.
It is noteworthy that the standard equipment of the all-terrain vehicle includes a TJM electric winch with a traction force of 1.5 tons. A very logical solution - it is a rare owner who does not improve the off-road capabilities of his ATV with such a device, but for additional money.
Thus, the ATV 800 GT has perhaps the most complete package of a true off-road fighter. And a short test drive allowed us to evaluate it on rough terrain.
Ergonomics are nothing remarkable. The seating position is classic for a utilitarian all-terrain vehicle, moderately wide and high steering wheel, footrests with anti-slip ribbed plates, and quite convenient controls. Only the fully liquid crystal instrument panel is not very convenient - on a sunny day its readings are difficult to read. But, fortunately, you rarely have to look at it off-road.
The “second number” will truly appreciate the new product; he will feel as at ease as possible. For the passenger there is a large backrest and comfortable handles, and a two-level seat with a “step” will not allow him to “roll down” towards the pilot when braking.
The first tens of meters on the ATV 800 GT on the motocross track convinced us that the engine was right at home. Power and torque are more than enough for both aggressive starts and “strength exercises”. Moreover, if you are alone in the saddle, the “all-terrain vehicle” really urges you to “step on the gas”, take a turn “fan” or even jump on some bump. You should be more careful with this, after all, this is a “utility” (and a two-seater one at that), and not a sports vehicle, so such abuse will probably not add durability to the ATV.
However, the suspension, which matches the engine, allows you to drive quickly over rough terrain. Its design, according to the manufacturer's representatives, is in many ways similar to the Yamaha Grizzly. Everything is “grown-up”: completely independent design, adjustable spring preload, front travel – 17 cm, rear – 22 cm. A similar suspension is used on another company all-terrain vehicle, the ATV 700H, which last year “brought” prizes to participants in the famous competition Ladoga Trophy, which is something the plant representatives are especially proud of.
The geometric cross-country ability of the new product is also in perfect order. The approach and departure angles are still more than sufficient, because the increase in length is reflected only in the wheelbase. In other words, only the ramp angle has decreased slightly. But in most cases, the ground clearance and impressive suspension travel are quite enough to overcome any kinks in the terrain. And even if the all-terrain vehicle “lay down on its belly,” there is always the opportunity to ride back or dismount and help it with your own “horsepower.”
The ascents and descents made it possible to evaluate the excellent engine braking ability of the ATV. It is enough to completely remove the gas to get very intense deceleration, comparable to the work of standard disc brakes. Off-road, this property is more than useful - it’s safer to slide down a slope, and the pads will wear out less.
Perhaps, during the entire test drive, the mechanism for switching driving modes raised the most questions and complaints. One of the test 800 GTs stopped engaging in reverse after some time, and the second one periodically made terrible sounds, indicating that the gear transmission was “under-engaged.” The reason for this is either the multi-knee system of rods from the lever to the variator housing (this is a forced scheme, since the entire engine, let us remind you, was taken without changes from a structurally different “side-by-side”), or the excessive haste and even ruthlessness of our brother-journalist in relation to the equipment during the test drive.
In general, the 800 GT proved to be a completely balanced all-terrain vehicle, thanks to its powerful engine, it fully justifies the title of flagship.
