Triumph Tiger 1200 2022. Details about the five versions of the model

The new 2022 Triumph Tiger 1200 is lighter, more powerful, with excellent handling and performance, with an updated engine - in short, a magnificent tourer designed for the most interesting adventures. The new Tiger 1200 range receives a number of exciting updates aimed at both off-road and tarmac touring, including, for the first time, two Tiger Explorer variants with 30-litre petrol tanks.

Triumph Tiger 1200 2022

Building on the strengths of the previous generation, including practical shaft drive, long-range comfort features and a three-cylinder engine ideal for touring, the new Tigers benefit from a new generation of Triumph's 1200 T-crank triple, lightweight chassis and cutting-edge technology.

The more asphalt Tiger 1200 GT and GT Pro received cast wheels, 19-size front and 18-size rear, as well as new Showa semi-active suspensions , tuned for the most efficient performance on hard surfaces. The new Rally Pro debuts specially designed 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoked wheels with tubeless tires, as well as longer-travel Showa semi-active suspensions tuned for all-road and off-road performance.

Two of the five models, Rally Explorer and GT Explorer, received new 30-liter tanks and a radar blind spot monitoring system for the first time in the entire existence of the line - thus, the GT Explorer is the only alloy wheel tourer on the market with a 30-liter tank and radar . Both Explorer versions are designed to travel the world with maximum comfort and safety.

The new inline-three with a T-crankshaft is created taking into account the advantages that have made the Triumph Tiger 900 so successful in the mid-sized touring market. The new engine combines the best of both worlds - the torque of twos at low speeds for the convenience of off-road driving and the performance of threes at high speeds for confident driving on asphalt, where the bulk of the journey takes place. Technically, the T-crankshaft means the flashes are spaced 180, 270 and 270 degrees apart, so there's one short interval between flashes and two longer ones, resulting in strong low-end handling and improved rear-wheel traction feel.

Decline and revival of the empire

Since the 60s of the twentieth century, powerful Japanese manufacturers have entered the world market - Suzuki, Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha. These motorcycle brands were able to offer buyers in the United States and European countries, where the lion's share of Triumph motorcycles were imported, motorcycles that were inexpensive, stylish, and at the same time high-quality. Demand for the Triumph motorcycle on the foreign market began to seriously decline, which led to an internal production crisis, worker strikes and a complete shutdown of the plant at the beginning of the 80s.

In 1983, the company was declared bankrupt, at the same time the company was bought out by the English billionaire entrepreneur John Bloor. The businessman invested about 170 million pounds sterling in its restoration and in 7 years was able to return the company to the world market.

Engine Triumph Tiger 1200 2022

The new 1160cc engine of the 2022 Triumph Tiger 1200 has received a significant increase in performance: at 150PS at 9000rpm, the increase is 9PS compared to the previous generation, making the new Tigers the most powerful shaft-drive motorcycles in their class. Peak torque has also increased significantly - by 8 Nm, to 130 Nm at 7000 rpm.

In addition to the performance gains, the new design, tuning and firing pattern provide stronger acceleration and a significantly more responsive character, while the staggered firing pattern results in highly informative throttle, low-end torque and control that matches the powerful character of the inline-three throughout the rev range. Completing the Tiger's transformation is a new lightweight, low-maintenance driveshaft—a key practicality benefit of these models, highly valued by many touring truckers.

Compared to the previous generation, the engine has changed completely: new piston diameter and stroke, crankshaft, cylinder head, gearbox, clutch and even cardan and intermediate gear. Each component has been designed to be as light and compact as possible, making the entire engine significantly more compact and significantly improving driving dynamics.

Film deposit

In the 40s and 50s, the popularity and export of Triumph motorcycles to the United States increased. In 1953, Marlon Brando starred in the film “The Savage” on his own Triumph Thunderbird 6T motorcycle. The Triumph Bonneville motorcycle, released in 1959, was used by Steve McQueen on the set of the new Hollywood film The Great Escape. Having appeared on the screens, Triumph motorcycles became very popular in America and for several years did not experience serious competition from other motorcycle manufacturers.

Chassis and handling of the 2022 Triumph Tiger 1200

According to Triumph, the new Tiger 1200 has been designed to set the highest bar in on- and off-road handling thanks to significant weight reduction, a new lightweight chassis, cutting-edge performance and new ergonomics. Thanks to careful development of all components in terms of weight optimization, the new generation Tiger has become more than 25 kg lighter than the previous one.

Representatives of the new generation Tiger 1200 family received wheels of different sizes based on the purpose of a particular model. Thus, the Rally Pro and Rally Explorer have 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels on spokes with tubeless tires, while the GT, GT Pro and GT Explorer received 19-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels on alloy wheels, which are more comfortable on asphalt. All versions of the Tiger 1200 are equipped with Brembo Stylema brakes, meeting the requirements of both long-distance asphalt touring and the off-road driving characteristics of Rally models. The excellent stopping power of the Brembo calipers is controlled by the optimized tilt ABS fitted to all new models, which is powered by an inertia measuring device that constantly monitors the bike's attitude and acceleration in all axes, taking into account the bike's lean angle and calculating the optimal level of ABS intervention based on these data. Magura HC-1 adjustable master cylinders provide progressive responsiveness and enhance comfort and controllability. All five models of the updated Tiger 1200 line also receive optimized lean traction control based on an inertia measurement device, which takes into account the angle of the motorcycle when determining the threshold and degree of intervention.

A significant improvement in weight distribution and handling of the Tiger 1200 family is due to their new frame, which is 5.4 kg lighter than the previous design. It features an aluminum subframe and bolt-on passenger footpeg brackets, improvements made based on consumer feedback. Additional weight savings are provided by a new aluminum fuel tank and a new three-link swingarm, which is 1.5kg lighter and yet stronger than the previous version's single-sided swingarm, and includes a smaller, lighter driveshaft and intermediate gear.

New saddle and tank ergonomics provide low-speed confidence, improved comfort and control: the new Tiger's seat is narrower at the front where it meets the tank, and it has two height positions with a 20mm difference between them. Thus, the GT, GT Pro and GT Explorer versions have a saddle height of 850 or 870mm, and the Rally Pro and Rally Explorer have 875 or 895mm. If necessary, the optional lowered seat allows you to reduce the seat height by another 20mm. Additional comfort is provided by a new windshield with convenient adjustment and new side deflectors that divert wind from the sides.

Each model in the Triumph Tiger 1200 series has been optimized to improve handling and rider comfort. The steering wheel is 20mm wider than on the previous generation, which is valuable in terms of off-road handling. On the GT Explorer and Rally Explorer versions, the handlebars are 16mm higher than on the other three models, providing more comfortable ergonomics with a larger tank, and the footpegs and foot controls have been revised on all models.

Motorcycle debut and first success

In 1902, Triumph made its debut on the English market with its first motorcycle model, which sold 500 units within a year. Over the next few years, Triumph motorcycles were successfully sold in their homeland, thanks to which the company expanded production. In 1906, the company formed its final name, Triumph Engineering Co. Ltd., which remained so until 1983.

In 1907, production volume reached 1000 units, and the following year, 1908, motorcycle racer Jack Marshall showed the best result on a Triumph motorcycle in races on the Isle of Man. In 1909, it produced 3,000 motorcycles and introduced its famous Roadster motorcycle, a large-capacity serial cruiser popularly nicknamed the “Trusty Triumph.” During the First World War, the British government placed an order for 30,000 units of this model, thereby seriously supporting the manufacturer.

In the post-war 20s, the company continued to produce bicycles, Triumph motorcycles and began producing cars (1928). Its sports variation Tiger 100, introduced in 1939, was able to demonstrate a speed of 189.93 km/h. In 1940, the company introduced the world's first motorcycle with an alternating current generator - the 3TW Military model, intended for military couriers.

The years of the Great Depression of the 30s affected the state of affairs: the founders of the company left, the automobile brand became unprofitable, as a result of which the motorcycle division was sold on January 22, 1936 to the owner J. Y. Sangster for 41 thousand pounds sterling. With the outbreak of World War II, the enterprise was partially reoriented to the production of military equipment and received a large government order for the production of aircraft engines and motorcycles - 300 units of motorcycles per week.

After the war, the company continued to produce popular pre-war models and introduced new motorcycles - 3T De Luxe (1946), 500GP and TR5 Trophy (1947), 6T Thunderbird (1948) and TRW (1950). In 1951, Sangster sold Triumph to the BSA concern.

history of the company

was founded by Siegfried Bettmann and Moritz Schulte, German merchants who emigrated to Britain at the end of the 19th century. Siegfried Bettmann was engaged in the trade of sewing machines and bicycles imported from Germany. This gave Schulte the idea to jointly produce high-quality bicycle equipment of their own brand. Cooperation between entrepreneurs began in 1887 with the formation of the Triumph Cycle Company. In 1889, the first bicycles produced under the Triumph brand were introduced in the English town of Coventry.

At the end of the 19th century, the idea of switching from a simple bicycle to a bicycle model with a motor was actively developing in the world - the history of the development of the motorcycle began. The newfangled vehicle became increasingly popular, and in 1898 the company, then called The New Triumph Co. Ltd., began its own development of motorcycles based on Belgian engines.
