Alfa moped engine repair

Recommendations for repairing the Alpha engine.

As we all know, any motorcycle wears out and breaks over time, especially if it is not handled correctly. The most important part of the Alpha moped is its engine, which, if handled improperly or repaired or replaced with spare parts, may not work or work incorrectly. To avoid such problems, you need to know how to properly repair the engine of an Alpha moped with your own hands. This is easy to do if you have the necessary experience and knowledge.

Alpha as standard has

  1. Electric starter.
  2. Electronic ignition 12V.
  3. Electronic tachometer on the dashboard.
  4. A simple diagram of the electrical equipment of an alpha moped allows you to replace failed elements with your own hands.

The source of energy in the Alpha moped is the battery. Additionally, a relay regulator is installed. The wiring is protected against voltage surges. The six-coil generator maintains voltage at any engine speed, and also ensures uninterrupted operation of the lighting and alarm systems.

Installation of additional lighting fixtures is not provided. Also, you cannot replace lamps with more powerful ones. The absence of complex connections in the electrical circuit allows even a novice to carry out repairs, which also affects the popularity of Alpha.

An electronic tachometer on the dashboard improves vehicle controllability and increases ride comfort. The low cost of Alpha leads to the fact that many factory components are not of high quality. Thus, the wiring insulation is made from cheap plastic. As practice shows, operation in the harsh Russian climate leads to the insulation cracking .

That is why many recommend replacing the factory plastic wiring with a new one with rubber insulation immediately after making the purchase. In this way you can insure yourself against various operational problems.

Do-it-yourself repair of Alpha moped engines

When the moped does not start, the muffler fires and black smoke comes out of it, this means that you have a problem with the carburetor. To fix these problems, you need to clean the carburetor and air filter, also make carburetor adjustments and tighten the bolts thoroughly.

If your moped takes a long time to accelerate, and the engine does not have enough standard power, the problem is broken valves. The old valves need to be replaced with new ones and the moped will work again.

If the Alpha moped cannot accelerate to the required speed, although it has high speeds, and the engine roars like crazy and shifts gears intermittently, the problem is clutch wear. To repair the clutch you need to do the following: you must remove the engine and the plastic cover from it, then unscrew the clamping bolt and the adjustment mechanism, then tighten the clamping bolt tightly, and start the moped. After all this, you need to drive a little at first speed, about a couple of meters. Also, another cause of engine-related problems is wear of the drive sprockets , in which case you will have to replace them with new ones.

Engine overheating . This problem can be solved very simply - add oil. If suddenly oil leaks from somewhere, you should definitely contact a professional.

So, we continue the series of articles. Here is a description of 2009-20013 and 50cc, move on to 120cc ;-)

I received my license back in 2004, and from the age of 14 I rode a Karpaty-2 Sport moped (I’ll write more later). But until 2013 there was nothing over 50cc. And so in 2012 I began to look for something cooler than 50cc.

Among the contenders were the Chinese. I had experience in operating them with Chinese motorcycles, it’s okay, all I had to do was choose one to my liking and according to the money. To avoid holivar: Japanese technology is nicer, better quality, but more expensive. I’ll survive with my runs.

All winter I watched videos, went to salons to sit. Of the contenders, I liked the Stealth Delta 200 for its comfortable fit, but in the spring everything went up in price. In terms of traction characteristics, I liked the Orion 125, which was cheaper. I didn’t like the Stealth Flaim 200 for the fit and the abundance of plastic (but you can install roll bars and a trunk), Yobrik is more expensive. And on May 1st I took Orion. And a year later - Stealth Delta 200, which I drove to Crimea. But more on that another time.

They collected it at the salon, handed it out and off they went. Refueled. While running in, there was no traction, I could barely drive. But I always try to roll it in gently, so I endured it, for which I later received a good pull. And it's nice to drive. It drives at low speed (4th speed at 30 km/h) and gives incredible pleasure.

There were problems with registration (I need travel legality to travel). The moped is assembled in the Bryansk region and Krasnodar region. If the motor is assembled in the Krasnodar region (like mine), then the manufacturer provides the title on behalf of the Bryansk region. The traffic police found fault with this. I had to go to the dealer, who gave me a certified document that the Krasnodar division has the right to issue PTS for the Bryansk region. After which I registered the motel. The traffic police looked at how much he eats, how much he rushes, “well, he’s normal for a dacha,” and issued a license plate.

I drove it on the Moscow-Dacha road.:-) I did a 300 km maintenance (at the dealer for a guarantee) and a 1000 km maintenance (by myself, the problems would have come out at the 300 km maintenance, but there is no point in paying further). On the TO-1000, I stretched everything again, adjusted the valves, the chain, replaced the oil with car oil (holivar-holivar, is it possible to pour car oil? It’s possible! If you do it wisely). And I use the bike with a complete sense of satisfaction. A little later I bought a case. Although the first 1000 km are considered a break-in period, the bike rides better with each km and I think it’s realistic to break in up to three thousand. It was like this on the Stealth Delta, but on the Orion the mileage is still 2800.

During operation, I went to Kolomna, rode around the dacha and around Moscow. You can already drive around Moscow (50cc in Moscow traffic is terrible). Moreover, driving through Moscow traffic jams on the Orion turned out to be more convenient than on the Stealth Delta 200 (but on the Moscow Ring Road it is very difficult and here the Delta is better; on highways outside the city it doesn’t matter). As a result, by the middle of 2015, I had driven 2800 km (no, there were no breakdowns, that’s 2800 km in total; on such runs, equipment breaks down only for those who don’t take care of it and drive it in the tail and mane).

Among the clearly expressed features: traction and suspension are optimal for primer, the tank is only 8 liters, it blows away on the highway at 80 km/h.:-) There are no brakes:-) . Drum brakes. The bike is very light, which is a huge advantage for leisurely driving on unfamiliar roads.

Although the motor is called Orion 125, it actually has 120cc and 6.9 hp. Oh, I also received tax for 2014: 47 rubles :-)

So, I’ll summarize for you the moped motorcycle moped version “PRO” Orion 125 City. What can you say about it, if you don’t stupidly retype the performance characteristics from the instructions with a mileage of 2800 km? That's what:

  1. PTS. It is legal to travel to the Moscow Ring Road and the Highway.
  2. The traffic police of Moscow and the Moscow Region turn away when they see him (from afar you can see him as a moped). But in some regions it is better to have a number and insurance; traffic cops specifically catch them, because it is a reason for a fine.
  3. 80 goes, even 90. Some school-age kids go 120 in the Abibas and make a 10-horsepower Yobra (Anton-Arkady Nedobaykerov confirms:-) ). But in general the comfort speed is up to 70. And up to 50 in the fields is his element.
  4. The engine characteristics, chainrings and suspension are ideal for the village. But you shouldn’t be under any illusions, although the frame there is better than the usual Alfa one, it’s still a moped. Well, the bike is lightweight, which is a minus on the highway, but a plus in the fields.
  5. It uses little gasoline, and maintenance costs are minimal.
  6. You can drive 70 along the highway while keeping them on the speedometer. I drove 350 km in a day - everything was fine. But 500 km per day, I think this is the limit (like 780 on Delta 200, but this is all a risk). In short, for travel, count on 400 km per day.
  7. The seating position is quite comfortable, but sometimes I want the steering wheel to be higher and closer.
  8. Drum brakes, Chinese tires. So don’t forget to think with your head, brake with your engine, and use your equipment. 80 km/h is no joke, no matter what those same school-aged boys say.
  9. Spare parts are cheap, and there’s nothing special to break. Everything is done in the field.
  10. Inconvenient: there are no chain adjustment marks and the intake valve has a gap of 0.03 mm - you will have to look for such a feeler gauge.
  11. The motorcycle has a trunk and a place for attaching side bags. This is good.

Here's a moped that looks like a moped, but rides better. This is not a motorcycle, this is a PRO moped. I recommend it for the country house or as an inexpensive motorcycle. But in 2014 I went to Crimea on the Delta. Although Orion would have gotten there too. What to go to the south in 2015: Orion or Delta - I haven’t decided yet. Orion is light, which is sometimes a big plus - you can go somewhere. Well, there is already a trunk and side fastening for bags :-)

Dismantling engines and gearboxes of Alpha mopeds

In order to disassemble the engine you need to do the following:

And in conclusion, we would like to say that although the Alfa moped rarely breaks down, it is not worth disassembling and repairing it yourself if you lack knowledge and experience, or you are simply not completely sure that you can handle it, since if you want to save money, you can lose a lot more . Therefore, you should not refuse the services of professionals. But still, if you decide to repair the engine of the Alpha 110 moped yourself, do not forget to use the diagram or training video. And if there is no diagram, then mark the location of the parts on a piece of paper so as not to forget.

Engine disassembly

Disassembling the Alpha engine is quite simple. To do this you need:

After performing the necessary manipulations, you need to properly assemble the engine, installing all the parts in place.

A diagram can help you understand the nuances. Also, a lot of useful tips regarding repairing the most important “organ” of the Alpha moped are contained in the training video.

Let's get started

So, the battery is ready to charge. Connect the terminals of the charger to the battery. The red terminal is to the positive terminal of the battery, the black (or blue) terminal is to the negative terminal. Don't mix up the polarity!

Most modern chargers automatically set the charge current and charging time. But if it is possible to set the charging current, it is chosen by dividing the nominal capacity of the battery by ten. For example, with a capacity of 4 Ampere-hours, the charge current should be 0.4A. In this case, the charging time will be approximately 10 hours.

You should not charge a motorcycle battery with a car charger if it cannot charge with a current of less than 1A. High charging currents can damage the battery.

Battery care rules

The battery requires proper storage and care. Here are some requirements for proper operation of a scooter battery , so that it will last a long time.

First, do not allow the battery to be discharged to more than half its capacity. In general, the battery should not be allowed to be stored in a discharged state. If you feel that the scooter starter is having difficulty cranking the engine, recharge it as quickly as possible.

The battery must be kept clean, since dirt accumulating on the terminals contributes to the rapid discharge of the battery due to current leakage. Keep contacts clean and free of oxides.

In order to prevent a short circuit at the battery terminals, which can permanently damage the battery, you need to spare no expense in purchasing fusible links, preferably factory-made ones. Homemade fuses, which often fail, can only make the situation worse.

Measure the voltage at the output terminals with the engine running, it should be between 13.5-14.5 Volts. If abnormal, check the scooter's voltage regulator.

If your scooter is equipped with a serviceable battery, check the electrolyte level at least once a month. If the level drops, add distilled water. Plain water causes the battery to fail faster.

You should always remember that equipping a scooter with a radio, additional headlights, and an alarm requires the scooter owner to check the battery charge more often, since all these devices require additional electricity.

Orion 125 characteristics

At the moment, several versions of the Orion moped are produced in Russia; 125 cubic meters is considered the maximum mark for it. There are also mopeds with a cubic capacity of 50, 75 and 100 cm3. In other characteristics, all modifications do not differ, so the data for all Orions is the same. The model under consideration received 1 cylinder, operation in 4-stroke mode, power of 7.05 horsepower and air cooling. These are quite standard characteristics that made it possible to achieve a low price for the moped.

The engine starts using standard methods - electric or kick starter. The circular gearbox has 5 speeds, and the 125 cc engine allows you to develop a maximum of 90 km/h, which is quite good for such a moped. With a large volume, Orion received a good load that can support a driver and passenger with a total weight of up to 200 kg. The weight of the motorcycle without load is 90 kg.

It is worth noting that there is also another modification of the Orion 125 cc moped, which has the letter “B” in the name. This version has two differences - a different design and a power of 4.8/6.3 kW (modification “A” has 4.8/3.5 kW).

Consequences of untimely replacement

If you don't change your air filter, at best its performance will deteriorate over time. The moped will lose power and stop idling. Also, dust getting into the carburetor will clog all the channels, which will lead to unstable operation. The worst case scenario may be that dirt gets into the engine itself. Large particles will leave deep scratches on the cylinder bore and on the piston. The valve assembly may fail. Accordingly, a major overhaul of the engine will be required, so you should not neglect replacing the air filter. The consequences can be dire.

The frequency of replacement depends on the level of road pollution in the area. The cleaning system should be carefully inspected periodically.
