General overview
The beauty of the custom matches the pleasure of driving
The new Vulcan 900 Custom is custom that stands out from the crowd of its classmates. It embodies Kawasaki constant search for the essence of a true custom. The appearance of the motorcycle is determined by the contrast between the massive rear wheel with a solid disc and its antipode in the form of a light, elegant front part. This bifurcation gives dynamism to the slender silhouette, the enchanting lines of which no machine alone, without a person, could create.
To achieve ease of visual perception of the front of the motorcycle, thin wheels with a diameter of 21" were chosen. However, for a true custom , a wheel with regular wire spokes is simply unacceptable. As a replacement, a cast wheel was developed, the stylized spokes of which were made by hand at the first stage of design, which made it possible to obtain an elegant three-dimensional design of two halves. This unique 21-inch alloy wheel will turn heads even when mounted on a “typical” custom. The clean and simple look of the front end is complemented by a minimalist headlight design and straight handlebar (which are chromed, naturally).
The fuel tank, equally meticulously crafted, is a key element in the design concept of the Vulcan 900 Custom. Its carefully outlined contours create an intricate play of light and shadow. Like a beautiful woman, they not only attract the eye, but also create a desire to touch. By running your hand along the gracefully curved surface of the tank, you can fully appreciate its exquisite shape, specially created to bring pleasure to everyone who sees or touches it.
Kawasaki motorcycle enthusiasts have come to expect after the mid-volume Vulcan 900 Classic and Classic Tourer LT cruisers were given the look and character of truly big bikes. Now all three models in the Vulcan 900 series feature beautifully chromed V-twin engines, sophisticated styling, reliable belt drives and massive rear tires. Their engines, specially designed for satisfying acceleration, generously provide powerful torque, characteristic only of large two-cylinder engines of this design. Add to this the easy handling of a sportbike, and you get motorcycles that are a real pleasure to ride. The Vulcan 900 Series models have raised the standards of performance, quality and craftsmanship in their class. The Vulcan 900 Custom has raised that bar again.
History of the Kawasaki Vulcan motorcycle
The Japanese company Kawasaki launched production of the Vulcan back in 1984. The first motorcycle models quickly began to fill the roads of Japan, then Europe, and soon the whole world. This model gained fans who actively watched all the developments and innovations among the Vulcan series motorcycles. The very first motorcycle was a cruising chopper with an engine capacity of 700 cm3 and producing 41 hp. At that time, manufacturers could not afford to produce motorcycles with a larger engine due to customs duties, since if the engine exceeds 750 cm3, the import cost almost doubled. When import restrictions were lifted, the Japanese company Kawasaki began to actively develop and produce models with an engine capacity of 900, then 1500 and in 2004 – 2000 cm3! The most powerful engine produced 116 hp. At that time, these were incredible figures for two-wheeled vehicles.
The Kawasaki Vulcan lineup includes 9 models. The last two are the Kawasaki Vulcan 900 and Vulcan 1700. Each model was created with the purpose of operating it on long trips. Although the company tried to produce more powerful engines, comfort and pleasant appearance still remained a priority.
First look at the motorcycle
- Rear wheel with solid disc. The 15-inch alloy rear wheel contrasts with the thin front wheel, complementing the custom's .
- Low seat. The tapered tank, narrow seat width and low saddle position make it easy to reach the ground with both feet.
- 4-stroke V-twin engine with liquid cooling, displacement 903 cm3. The high-turbulence centrifugal injector fuel injection system delivers huge power in the style of large-displacement V-twin engines, smooth throttle response and clean exhaust.
- Front wheel with a diameter of 21 inches with a cast disc. The 15-inch alloy rear wheel contrasts with the thin front wheel, complementing the custom's
. - Two disc brakes. The 900 Custom is equipped with front and rear disc brakes.
- Silencers with oblique cut. Aggressive mufflers with an oblique cut look good even when parked.
- Dashboard. The tank-mounted instrument panel includes a large speedometer and fuel gauge.
- Belting. A smooth and efficient belt drive requires less maintenance than a chain drive.
- Simple and airy front end. Minimalist design and plenty of chrome enhance the feeling of lightness and simplicity of the front end.
- Massive rear tire. The massive 180mm wide rear tire gives the custom a solid rear end that contrasts with the thin and visually light front end.
- The beauty of a handmade motorcycle. The elegant body parts and engine covers were modeled by hand. Thanks to this, they provide pleasure to everyone who sees or touches their front and rear wheels.
- Ease of operation. The chassis geometry is designed to provide a combination of structural rigidity and ease of control at near-limit speeds.
- Great torque at low speeds. Engine tuning favors low- to mid-range performance, making it easier to take off and allowing the rider to shift gears in "big bike" style.
- Best acceleration in its class. Ample reserve torque gives the Vulcan 900 Custom the best acceleration in its class (at standard road speeds).
Kawasaki Vulcan lineup
The Vulcan series of motorcycles from the Japanese company Kawasaki has four models of “volcanoes”:
- Classic
- Classic LT
- Custom
- Classic Special Edition
Each of the models is unique in its own way, so when purchasing, you can choose the option that suits you best. Let's start in order.
Kawasaki VN Classic is the simplest configuration. The classic version has spoked wheels with a radius of 16 on the front wheel, and with a radius of 15 on the rear. The engine covers and the exhaust system are chrome-plated. You also get a regular shaped loveseat.
Kawasaki VN Custom. In this version, instead of a 16-radius wheel, you get 21-diameter wheels. The rear wheel remains exactly the same for better traction. The motorcycle's legs are equipped with additional unique rubber bands, and the motorcycle uses much less chrome surfaces.
Kawasaki VN Classic Light Tourer is an expanded version of the regular “classic”. In the Light Tourer you additionally get a windshield, rear seat backrest and side saddlebags made from genuine leather.
Kawasaki VN Classic Special Edition is a series of motorcycles presented in a limited number of units. The appearance is represented by a unique graphic design. In addition, wire wheel spokes are installed, which is also quite rare on motorcycles of this class.
Main design features
Custom from Kawasaki
When designing the Vulcan 900 Custom
its appearance was worked out from the point of view of both the driver and the outside viewer. When sitting in a low saddle, the rider will notice the raised front and low rear. The narrow steering wheel is made in a sporty style; while driving, the driver’s hands are directed forward and upward. The uncluttered front section provides excellent visibility through the steering section, located behind the elegant contours of the tank.
When viewed from the side, the lightweight front and low-slung rear create a contrast that gives the bike a dynamic feel even when parked. Thanks to the painstaking work of the designers, the body of the motorcycle looks good from any angle and creates an exquisite play of light and shadow, enhancing the impression of its appearance.
Perfect lines
Although the Custom is a Vulcan 900 series model, to achieve the look of a true custom
Kawasaki developers have completely redesigned the body design, treating it as a completely new model.
- A key design element of the Vulcan 900 Custom is its fuel tank. It has an original elongated shape that naturally attracts the eye. Unlike some other customs that have flashy designs designed to attract attention, the beauty of the 900 Custom's tank lies in its elegance. A carefully executed, sophisticated design theme with two elongated depressions creates a graceful play of light and shadow along the smooth contours of the tank (Photograph).
- The same theme with two raised elements continues in the design of the rear fender. Like the tank, the rear wing is entirely composed of surfaces with varying curvature. The contours of the wing were created on models made by hand and are designed to give pleasure to everyone who sees or touches it with their hand.
- The unique shape of the rear light lens complements the design of the rear fender. (Photo).
Front wheel with a diameter of 21 inches with an alloy disc
The key feature of the new model, which allows you to achieve the appearance of a real custom , is its thin wheel with a diameter of 21 inches. The large wheel diameter also helps raise the front end of the bike, making it look even lighter. A more traditional wire-spoke wheel would have been sufficient to achieve the required dimensions, but an alloy wheel was used to give the new bike the striking appearance of a true custom.
- The disk has 18 “spokes” arranged in pairs. The original knitting needle model was made by hand. The spoke has a complex shape, including a narrowing in length in two directions and smooth three-dimensional interfaces with the hub and rim of the disc. Every line and surface of these voluminous spokes is gracefully curved. (Photo).
- Wheels with a diameter of 21 inches are quite rarely installed even on exclusive custom bikes , and accordingly, they had never been found in the design of production motorcycles until that time. However, through persistent research, a way was found to achieve the extremely high degrees of precision required to mass produce castings stylized as traditional spoked wheels. This is an undoubted achievement, given the complex shape of the spoke.
Simplicity and transparency
The visual lightness of the front end of the motorcycle is complemented by the simplicity of the headlight, fork and handlebar design. The fresh, clean lines resulting from this minimalist approach are highlighted by the unrestricted use of chrome.
- The motorcycle headlight is small in size and installed in isolation; the fork is open, there is no crossbar for installing headlights. The headlight, its bracket, lower beam and turn signal housings are chrome-plated. (Photo).
- Sporty straight handlebar enhances the bike's styling "custom".
Instead of clamps, we see an elegant curve of the raised base on two pipes directly from the upper cross-arm. Both the handlebar and the two-tube base are fully chrome-plated. (Photo). - The clean lines of the front end of the bike are also complemented by a small, minimalist style fender and exposed forks.
Complementary motorcycle rear end
To emphasize the grace of the front of the bike, the rear is made lower and heavier. This contrast adds an additional note to the dynamic feel of the custom, as when looking at the motorcycle the eye unconsciously glides from the front to the rear.
- The 15-inch cast rear wheel is chosen to highlight the contrast with the light and long front end. The solid disc gives the impression that the motorcycle is crouched. (Photos)
- The massive 180mm wide rear tire gives the rear of the bike a powerful feel. The high-profile tire visually adds massiveness to the rear of the motorcycle in contrast to the graceful front.
- The almost straight cut of the rear fender contributes to the perception of the bike's lines and opens up the view of the rear wheel. (Photo).
Engine
As with the body of the bike, a significant amount of time was spent on the design of the engine covers. The developers carefully avoided simple geometric shapes, which gives the impression that the lids they created are pleasant to the touch. And as a result, the engine polish looks even better.
- Deep chrome engine covers have curved outer surfaces. Their three-dimensional shape gives additional volume and style to the appearance of the motorcycle.
- The deep ribs of the block and cylinder heads are designed to visually increase engine displacement. The chosen dimensions and fin spacing help create the appearance of a large engine.
- Like the Vulcan 2000 and other models in the Vulcan 900 series, the edges of the fins are coated with a special coating that reflects light and enhances the lines of the engine.
- All non-chrome engine parts are powder coated in black.
- Two muffler pipes with an oblique cut complement the stylish image of the custom. Thanks to the selected cut angle, the mufflers look impressive when the motorcycle is placed on the side stand.
- The curved shape of the exhaust pipes leading to the mufflers was originally developed on hand-made models, and only then translated into a three-dimensional digital image. (Photo).
Other design features of the Custom model
The image of a real custom is complemented by many other design elements of the motorcycle.
- A thin and light chrome instrument panel on the tank complements the sleek lines of the bike. (Photo).
- One piece gunfighter style saddle with typical for custom appearance allows the driver and passenger to sit comfortably. The ergonomic driver's seat is reminiscent of the ultra-comfortable bucket driver's seat on the VN900 Classic. (Photo).
- Footrests instead of platforms contribute to the image custom. (Photo).
- Standard two-position shift lever, unlike the heel-toe shifter found on other Vulcan models.
- Chrome running boards, shift lever and rear brake lever complement the Custom's elegant appearance.
Image of a big motorcycle
Pressing the starter button awakens the V-twin direct injection engine from its slumber. Its pleasant pulsation calls the biker on the road. Once you start moving, confident acceleration and sportbike-like ease of control will make you feel what it means to ride without stress. You won't want to leave the saddle of your custom
- perhaps just to express the delight of driving.
Best acceleration in its class
The Custom's 903cc engine not only looks like a big V-twin, it delivers the responsiveness and superb acceleration of much more powerful motorcycles. It provides powerful thrust from 0 to 50 mph, and in the mid-speed range it can outperform any other motorcycle in its class.
- Like larger displacement motorcycles, the new custom's engine provides powerful low- and mid-range pulling power, allowing for quick gear changes (rather than having to rev the engine every time before setting off).
- In the mid-range (which is, in fact, where most people use it), the Vulcan 900 Custom has enough torque to out-accelerate smaller bikes and, when downshifted, keep up with bikes in the next class. engine volume.
- The electronic fuel injection system, controlled by dual throttle valves, provides very smooth and easily controlled torque.
- Automotive-style high-turbulence centrifugal injectors increase engine power while also reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
- Curved inlet ports provide the best inlet flow. The holes narrow as they approach the combustion chamber, increasing the flow rate of the mixture at the inlet for more efficient filling of the chamber. The result of a highly efficient intake tract is increased torque.
- Long intake lines run through the air filter housing. Long intake manifolds improve throttle response at low speeds.
Sportbike-like ease of handling and cruiser stability
Whether it's roaring down the highway or gliding smoothly through city streets, the Vulcan 900 Custom's almost sporty, effortless handling makes it one of the easiest customs to ride.
- The 900 Custom's long wheelbase makes it extremely stable on the highway.
- The offset and angle of the fork are chosen in such a way as to prevent the motorcycle from pulling to the side when moving. The result is ease of control; maneuvering at minimum speed does not require much effort.
- The low-mounted saddle, combined with a narrow frame width and tapering rear fuel tank, allows the rider to easily reach the ground with both feet when stopped at traffic lights and makes maneuvering in parking lots easier.
More detailed information on the characteristics of the engine, chassis and other elements of the Vulcan 900 Custom is given in the description of the VN900B 2006 model year motorcycle. ⇒
