Motorcycle IZH Jupiter 3 - characteristics and features

At one time, IZH Jupiter 3 was considered a leader among middle-class motorcycles. The engine in the IZ Jupiter 3 is a two-cylinder, which gave an advantage to the IZ Planet. Production of IZH Jupiter began in 1961 and continued until 2008; there were a total of 5 generations of this series.

When IZ Jupiter 3 first appeared, it immediately attracted attention; they were equipped with new engines for those times, in which the power was noticeably greater than in older Jupiters. IZH Jupiter 3 was produced for 10 years, right up to 1981. This is quite a long time, but the latest generation of IZH Jupiter 5 was produced even longer, and in terms of production duration, the 5th generation surpasses all previous generations.

Review

Classic transport has always been valued since the USSR, and 20 years ago Jupiter 5 was one of the best.
Today, most riders ride foreign fast motorcycles, but occasionally you can meet a former legend of the 80s and 90s. In those years, only his brother Planet 5 competed with Jupiter, but he could not compare with the motorcycle in terms of characteristics. Their main difference was the difference in cylinders, and therefore power. If we continue to compare these two competitors, we can highlight the fact that both models had almost the same data. For example, they had one tubular frame, and a special subframe was installed to better secure the rear wheel. In general, the entire design of Jupiter 5 was quite standard and simple, the engine was attached to the frame, the fuel tank was located above, and the headlight and dashboard were installed on the steering wheel.

In the photo of Izh Jupiter 5 you can see that below the seat there are two compartments with protection. These were glove compartments, each of which was intended for a specific purpose: the right one was for tools, and the left one housed the battery. There were also 2 exhaust pipes installed that ran through the entire motorcycle. Sometimes the pipes got hot and could cause a burn, but the manufacturer installed them below the footpegs to keep the passenger as safe as possible.

Even the first models of the Izh Jupiter 5 motorcycle had simple drum brakes with a mechanical drive, but subsequent modifications received a front disc brake with a hydraulic drive.

Sidecar trailer for Alpha moped

Let's start our publication with a photo report on how to make a sidecar on the Alfa moto. To save money, the moped trailer is made from scraps of pipes and profiles, and if desired, it can be made more neat and practical. The hub for the one-wheel trailer was taken from a VAZ car and welded with reinforced gussets. As you can see, the wheel is also Zhiguli. The side wheelchair trailer for the Alpha moped itself is simple in design and making it with your own hands will not be particularly difficult. There will be more problems with where to attach this stroller to the moped.

In this version, a reinforcing frame is welded to the Alpha frame (see photo).

This frame is attached at three points:

Under the fuel tank where the bars are attached from the factory.

At the bottom of the moped, where the central stand is installed. To attach the trailer, you need to remove the step and weld a plate, and a piece of pipe to the plate.

We screw the stroller to the shock absorber mounting location.

To prevent the steering wheel from moving, homemade rods were made from tubes. M12 nuts are welded into them for screwing in the rod studs. By turning the studs you can adjust the moped trailer.

This side trailer for the Alfa was made in a hurry and will undoubtedly be improved over time. It can carry cargo up to 500 kg. To transport small-sized cargo, it is possible to make a wooden box (as in the example of a homemade wheelchair trailer).

Delivery of materials for a homemade stroller can be carried out by Avtotrans.

Repair and tuning

The products of the Izhevsk plant have never been famous for their reliability. But there is also an advantage in this - being the first motorcycle for a novice biker, some “Izhak” acted as a “learning desk”, helping to learn not only driving, but also independent maintenance and repair.

Spare parts

Finding them is not difficult, because at one time the Izhevsk plant riveted a fair number of motorcycles. The prices are low, but in some cases it is cheaper and easier to buy a “donor”, from which you can remove everything you need as needed.

Tuning

It is not easy to somehow modify a Soviet bike. Typically, owners reduce all changes made to visual tuning. Sometimes the carburetor is replaced with a Japanese or Chinese one - this relatively inexpensive operation helps avoid many potential problems.

Blog named after Umelec1 → For a berry for two days.

The company was brought together by Zamaraev, who invited me to join the club of amateur technical creativity. The company consisted of four family crews who had never experienced such tests before this trip. The men were all from the motorcycle plant, but they only knew Zamaraev. The women met for the first time, which did not prevent them from uniting at their first stop. We are going for berries, presumably cranberries, to the Turin swamps. We are going beyond Nikolaevka. This is only 160 -170 kilometers of soil. The ground was dry, however, the forecast was unclear, and the possibility of rain could not be ruled out. Olga and I didn’t even know what it was: “To the swamps for berries”! Therefore, we were interested in the very fact of the voyage or even the event. I was told a lot about such trips not at all as ordinary berry picking, but as adventures. There were even whole legends about such campaigns. I wanted to say so: “Participate.”

Cylinders

In order to improve the filling of the cylinders in both engines, the flow sections of the windows have been changed and the valve timing has been increased. This is clearly visible in Fig. 2. where the cylinder developments are presented. The IZH-Jupiter 3 engine uses a two-jet purge scheme, rather than a four-jet one. as it was on IZH-Yu2.

Rice. 2. Cylinder scans: on the left 2a - IZH Jupiter 3, on the right 2b - IZH Planet 3. The dotted line shows the windows of the IZH-Yu2 and IZH-P2 engines, respectively.

The thermal regime of engines of previous models, especially IZH-Yu2, was quite intense. Because of this, if the ignition or carburetor adjustments were violated, detonation sometimes occurred, the piston jammed, and the exhaust pipes darkened. To reduce the thermal stress of new engines and eliminate unpleasant consequences, the cylinders and heads were equipped with more developed fins, and on the Jupiter 3 model, in addition, the length of the exhaust channel in the cylinder was increased. Now the exhaust gases entering the exhaust pipe have a lower temperature.

How to make a muffler for Izh Planet 5

The engines of Soviet (and not only) motorcycles are designed for certain average performance in order to ensure their service life and durability, so it is always possible to improve the motorcycle parameters that interest us. (see continuation)

The muffler cannot provide an increase in power over the entire rpm range. Plus, it is initially set to a mode that produces an increase in torque, not power. In this case, the wave of exhaust gases must have time to pass through the entire resonator, be reflected from the cone and return to the exhaust window at the moment when it is still open, and the purge windows have already closed. If the wave arrives earlier, it will drive part of the working mixture back into the purge channels. If later, part of the working mixture will have time to fly out of the exhaust pipe. In both cases, torque and power will decrease and fuel consumption will increase.

Resonator dimensions : L – total length of the resonator; L count – length of the muffler “elbow”; L p.c. – length of the front “straight” cone; L cf – length of the middle part; L obr.k. – length of the reverse cone; D count – diameter of the “knee”; D cf – diameter of the middle part; D jam. – diameter of the muffling part.

The most important dimension - L (total length of the exhaust system from the exhaust port to the end of the return cone) can be calculated using the formula:

L =[( a prod + avyp)/720 x 1/ n x 33,360]/2

where: aprod — purging phase (deg.); avyp — release phase (deg.); n — engine speed at which it is necessary to obtain an increase in torque (rpm); 33,360 m/min is the accepted average speed of the gas wave in the exhaust pipe. The volume of the resonator must be an even number of times greater than the working volume of the cylinder, that is, 2, 4, 6, etc. - only in this case will the muffler work as it should.

Motorcycle design

But structurally the motorcycles of these modifications did not differ from each other. All components of the motorcycle were mounted on a tubular frame. To provide suspension for the rear wheel, there was a subframe at the rear of the frame, attached to the frame by a non-rigid bolt connection.

A power unit with a gearbox and a steering column equipped with a telescopic fork were installed on the front part of the frame. The fuel tank was located above the engine, and in front of it was the steering wheel, dashboard and headlight.

Behind the tank, the entire upper part of the motorcycle was allocated under the seat, with a rear fender with a brake light attached to it. Below the seat there were two glove compartments. The left one was for the battery, and the right one was for tools.

The rear wheel was installed on the existing subframe. To provide its suspension, the subframe, in addition to the non-rigid bolted fastening, was connected to the frame by means of spring-loaded oil shock absorbers. The springs had three-position adjustment, which provided a change in the rigidity of the rear suspension. The rear wheel was driven by a chain drive.

Exhaust pipes extending from the engine stretched along the entire motorcycle. To protect the driver and passenger from possible burns, the pipes were attached under the running boards.

The motorcycle was equipped with two-cam drum brakes with mechanical drive on both wheels. Subsequently, some versions were equipped with hydraulic front disc brakes.

“Izh-PS” produced in 1977 in export configuration (with a Mikuni carburetor and electronic contactless ignition) lived for a long time in the village of Leninsky, Pavlodar region. The current owner, a car body repair specialist, got it by accident. Friends asked me to paint my car and offered me a motorcycle as payment. Vitaly agreed. The new biker had practically no motorcycle experience. With the advent of the Pees, Vitaly began to actively master two wheels. He started dreaming about a ratbike in the early 2000s, after seeing something similar in Moto magazine. And so, having taken possession of a motorcycle, I decided to make my dream come true. Besides, Vitaly thought, it’s still impossible to build a chopper or a normal street from Izha-PS, so the best option is to make a “rat” (however, by the next season he still intends to build a chopper with a “Zaporozhye” engine and a homemade frame ).

First, Vitaly changed the shape of the tank: he cut off its upper part, “hushed it” in some places, as he put it, covered it with primer in some places, painted it black and covered it with tarpaulin. I developed the design of the “robe” myself. I cut and sewed it myself. And I used a canister cap as a filler neck. Vitaly covered the seat with leather and the side covers with tarpaulin. The main color of the rat bike emerged naturally: matte black. In no case should the motorcycle be shiny - this is also due to the “extremely aggressive” attitude to life of the Pavlodar biker.

In the engine, the new owner bored out the intake and exhaust channels and the cylinder - for the piston of the first repair (the previous owners never did major repairs, they limited themselves to replacing the piston rings), replaced the piston pin - it came from an Italian compressor engine.

For the gearbox, Vitaly selected non-standard gears: to improve acceleration dynamics, he shortened the first and second gears, and lengthened the third and fourth to increase the maximum speed. I installed the drive sprocket with 16 teeth instead of the standard 17. The rear one remained standard. To prevent the chain from rubbing against the rear brake cable, I had to tilt the rear shock absorbers. And to prevent the chain from sagging, a damper from a Zhiguli was installed on top of the pendulum.

Improvements also affected the chassis. The rear swingarm has become 10 cm longer (the standard one seemed too short). The steering column has been strengthened; The front wheel assembly with the fork is from the Izha K-15 motocross, the tires are from the CZ motocross. The rear wheel is standard, and the tire is a regular Soviet all-terrain vehicle. The place of the standard muffler is now taken by the “can” located on the right side from the Suzuki “500” sportbike. The muffler protection is from the air filter housing from KamAZ. Vitaly made the metal footrests himself.

Everything would be fine, but it turned out that the passenger risked getting burned by the new “swollen” muffler. Need protection! Naturally, creative, in accordance with the general concept. An offer came from friends - a bone hand. Vitaly forged the arm himself - as he assures, in about three hours. I also made the mirrors myself. And I ordered forged handles for the front brake and clutch from familiar blacksmiths. They, like the front fender, were decorated with a composition of chains effectively frozen in the air (bought at the market, grabbed with a “semi-automatic machine”). The front fender is copied from a similar part of another Suzuki - enduro. Made by hand using a fiberglass matrix. The headlight is a fog lamp from an Audi 200. The brake light is assembled from two different cars. For the sake of unity of style, the turn signals are painted black and wrapped with black electrical tape. The battery charging relay is from a VAZ-2106. Corrugated hoses - for rugged beauty.

Initially, Vitaly planned to give the bike the name “Raptor”, but over time the name “Dog” somehow stuck by itself - from the popular “Dog”, which is called “Izh-PS”. And as soon as the appearance of the rat bike was formed, a new one arose quite naturally - “RatDog”. The element of the bike, according to the owner, is courtyards: you can go anywhere. On city highways there are also no obstacles for it - neither in the form of traffic jams, nor in the form of uneven road surfaces: after all, the chassis has elements of a “cross bike”. And what I immediately noticed while driving the bike was the amazing feeling of lightness, quick acceleration, stable engine operation, soft suspension and almost complete absence of vibrations compared to the standard “Dog”. Now, Vitalya, we are waiting for a custom from you!

Two carburetors on IZ Jupiter

Among all the various modifications for the two-cylinder Izh, the installation of two carburetors on the motorcycle engine stands out. One for each cylinder. This is done in hopes of increasing engine power by improving the filling of each cylinder. The power does increase, but at most by a couple of horses.

Therefore, on most two-stroke vehicles there is an intake resonator between the carburetor and the filter. It is a plastic box into which part of the mixture is spat out. This device is not available on Jupiters, because there is no particular need for it due to the length of the “pants” and the peculiarities of the two-cylinder engine. While one cylinder is making its stroke, the second one sucks in the mixture from the carburetor plus the part that was reflected from the skirt of the first piston.

In addition, installing a reed valve will improve cylinder filling at low and medium speeds, and fuel consumption will be slightly reduced. The Jupiter cylinder is approximately equal to the volume of 175 cm3, so the reed valves can be supplied from sunrise 3m-01 or made from a turner according to a sample. Carburetors can also be taken from Voskhod (K-62V, K-65V) or from Java 638.

In addition to installing the valves, the pistons will also need to be modified. A hole must be made on the piston skirt on the inlet side, as shown in the figure. This is necessary in order to reduce the inlet resistance necessary for the operation of the petals.

To operate two carburetors, you will need a tap with a double and a common throttle handle for both cables. These parts can be taken from the Urals or picked up from other motorcycle models.

After installing all the parts, it is necessary to configure and synchronize the carburetors. Otherwise, overheating and wear of one of the cylinders, as well as severe vibration, may occur.

Current state of affairs

Today the release is aimed at the foreign market. More than 95% of models are sold not in Russia, but in the USA and Canada, European countries, and the Asian market is becoming increasingly important over time. In South Korea or Japan, for example, there are still no worthy competitors in the sector of transport with a cradle; this niche is relatively unoccupied; there are perhaps Chinese replicas that have been copying BMW since the 50s, but they do not have the same status at all.

The total sales volume, if we count from the times of the late USSR, has long exceeded 3,000,000 copies, and this figure continues to grow. This makes it clear why you can so often hear the name “Soviet Harley” - people make the analogy based on popularity, and not on fit or appearance.

Naturally, there are many who want to first buy a legend, if only because of its glorious name, and then, after several years of operation, somehow update, refresh, and improve it. We are just moving on to possible changes.

Familiar problems

Reviews from owners indicate that, regardless of the version and year of manufacture, the Izh Planet-3 motorcycle had the same disadvantages:

  • Engine vibration associated with its design features. Almost all single-cylinder engines suffer from this.
  • Problematic electrical equipment. Almost identical to the Jupiter of the same years of production, the 6-volt wiring installed on Izh Planet-3 was not of very high quality. An insufficiently powerful generator created problems when driving at night.

Completely eliminating engine vibrations is almost impossible. Even serious engine tuning does not completely solve the problem. You have to put up with this feature of technology. As for electrics, motorcycle lovers who are interested in tuning Izh Planet-3 often ask the same questions:

  • How to detect ignition system malfunctions?
  • What to do if charging is lost?
  • How to replace the relay regulator?
  • Does it make sense to install electronic ignition?
  • How to replace a failed generator?
  • Where can I find the wiring diagram for Izh Planet-3 at 6 volts?
  • How to install BSZ?

These questions are countless and it is simply impossible to answer them in one review article. This requires digging deeper. And therefore we will try to answer as briefly as possible.

  1. Since the wiring diagram on Izh Planet-3 was repeatedly changed even depending on individual series, one cannot count on an exact match of its description. Sad but true.
  2. Replacing electrical wiring, switching electrical equipment operating from 6 volts to 12 volts and installing contactless ignition are completely justified steps to improve the performance of a motorcycle. After such modernization, ignition installation is simplified, and engine operation becomes more stable. At the same time, you will know exactly how the electrical circuit of your Izh Planet-3 works!

But it’s clearly not worth getting down to business without the necessary skills or suitable tools. As for DIY tuning enthusiasts, for them the Izh Planeta-3 motorcycle is an unplowed field for activity. There is room to expand here. Go for it!

ATTACHING AND ADJUSTING THE STROLLER

Rice. 65. Attaching the stroller to the motorcycle: 1 - front adjustable link; 2 — middle adjustable fastening rod; 3 — rear adjustable collet clamp; 4 - front rigid collet clamp

The sidecar is connected to the motorcycle at four points (Fig. 65). The lower two mounting points are collet clamps (Fig. 66) that cover the ball brackets of the motorcycle frame. The rear collet clamp is mounted in a bracket that is attached to the sidecar frame with two tie bolts and can be rotated or pulled out of the sidecar frame tube to adjust the position of the sidecar relative to the motorcycle. When tightening the bolt 3, the collet jaws of the clamp are pulled into the body 4, tightly clamping the ball bracket of the motorcycle wound.

The upper fastening is carried out at two points using rods 1 and 2 (Fig. 65), adjustable in length. These rods are pivotally connected to the lugs of the stroller frame and to the brackets of the motorcycle frame and are adjusted by

screwing the tubular part of the rod onto its threaded rod.

Using adjustable rods and a rear collet clamp, you can set a certain position of the stroller relative to the motorcycle, ensuring good handling and stability of the motorcycle when moving.

The position of the sidecar relative to the motorcycle is determined by the camber and toe-in of the wheels of the motorcycle and the sidecar. Both of these quantities are directly dependent on the design of the motorcycle.

For motorcycles without a sidecar wheel drive (K-750M, K-650, MT-9), it is recommended to set the camber and toe values in accordance with the diagram shown in Fig. 67.

The stroller should be mounted so that the angle of inclination of the motorcycle in relation to the vertical

plane (camber angle) was equal to 2º. To compensate for the lateral force created by the sidecar, it is recommended to adjust the relative position of the wheel planes so that their convergence along the length of the motorcycle base is 10 mm.

Rice. 66. Collet clamp for securing the stroller: 1 - collet; 2 - nut; 3 - bolt; 4 - clamp body

The situation is different for off-road motorcycles with a sidecar wheel drive (MV-750, MV-750M and MV-650). Since they have two driving wheels (the rear wheel and the sidecar wheel), when setting the position of the sidecar relative to the motorcycle, you should have zero camber and zero toe. In other words, the sidecar wheel must be parallel to the motorcycle wheels and all wheels must be perpendicular to the horizontal plane of the road. The sidecar relative to the motorcycle is installed at the manufacturer, but must be checked during operation. To do this, you need to move at low speed along a flat, horizontal section of the road, letting go of the steering wheel. When adjusted correctly, the motorcycle should not “steer” to the side. If the motorcycle “steals”, adjust the camber and toe.

When adjusting the camber you must:

— disconnect the upper eyelets of the linkage from the motorcycle frame brackets and unscrew the locknuts on the linkage rods;

— by screwing in or out the rod relative to the traction tube, achieve a deviation of the motorcycle from the sidecar by 2 or 0º, according to its design;

Rice. 67. Scheme for adjusting the camber and toe of the stroller and motorcycle

— lock the rods and secure the eyes.

The toe-in is adjusted using the knee lever of the rear collet clamp 3 (Fig. 65), for which it is necessary:

— disconnect inclined rods 1 and 2;

— loosen the two coupling bolts of the knee lever;

— pull out (to increase the amount of toe-in) the knee lever from the frame tube or push it into the tube (to reduce the amount of toe-in), setting it to 10 or 0 mm depending on the type of motorcycle;

— tighten the knee lever coupling bolts and attach the inclined rods to the motorcycle frame brackets.

It is recommended to check the installation of the stroller using a rod and a plumb line or a special factory-type device. When adjusting, lubricate the joints of the rods and collet clamps with grease.

Motorcycle modifications

The basic model had the index IZH 6.113 - 010 - 01, and the version with a side stroller - 6114 - 010 - 01. The “Lux” modifications were also produced (cradle, spare wheel, toothy tires, fairing, protective arches, trunk) and “Tourist” ( the same thing, but without the fairing, trunk and arches). Subsequently, the bike was modernized many times, receiving a different carburetor, a disc front brake, and a more energy-intensive fork with pneumatic adjustment. There is also a version with a cargo side trailer, but this is vanishingly rare these days. Jupiter 5 of the transitional model also comes across on sale, but this definition usually hides just one of the early modifications.

Sidecar movement

A distinctive feature of the modern sidecar movement is the adaptability of the sidecar to all types of motorcycles. In the States, for example, the cradle can be found in harness with a heavy Harley-Davidson Fat Boy, a touring Honda Gold Wing, a hyper-fast Suzuki Hayabusa, and a lightweight Kawasaki KLR. Side trailers can be made in typical cargo, passenger or combined versions. Often there are passenger strollers with not one, but two seats, in which fellow travelers are located side by side or behind each other. High-quality cradles with a well-known name are rarely priced at less than $5,000, and the upper price bar may well creep up to $20,000 or more.

Description of Izh Jupiter Second generation with photo

The above-mentioned iron horse is a middle-class road bike, the operation of which is designed for roads with a variety of surfaces. The production of this steel horse was mastered at the Izhevsk machine-building enterprise, located in distant Udmurtia. This motorcycle became a continuation of the line of multi-purpose middle-weight motorcycles produced in Soviet Russia. The very first representatives of the mass series came off the assembly line in the mid-1960s. The steel horse was produced until 1972. The bike became the embodiment of the desire of USSR design engineers to create a two-cylinder motorcycle.

It should be noted that as the first Udmurt iron horse with such a fast engine, the motorcycle turned out great. It had at its disposal a power of 19 horsepower with a rather modest, for that time, engine capacity of 347 cc. In addition, a very good lead-acid battery was installed on the two/three-wheeler.

Reviews about the Izh Jupiter 2 motorcycle in past years were mostly positive. However, over time, domestic motorcycle enthusiasts changed their views on the reliability of the iron horse. This is all due to the developers' miscalculations in the bike's electronics. His ignition timing was often off. And the bearing under the rotor part of the generator showed accelerated wear, which significantly upset the owners of the motorcycle. Not every village owner wanted to buy a second-generation Yupak.

It is curious that the above Izh, despite its short production history, was produced in a variety of modifications. Classic singles, models equipped with a sidecar, and even anniversary motorcycles rolled off the assembly line. In the last year of production, the world saw a transitional model that received eighteen-inch wheels, as well as beautiful glove compartments. The latter bore the typical later inscription with the name of the series.

Izh Jupiter 2 technical specifications

The maximum recommended speed of the bike is 110 km. at one o'clock. Engine type: two-stroke, two-cylinder, air-cooled. The piston diameter is 61.75 mm. The piston stroke reaches 58 mm. The engine capacity is 347 cc. The compression ratio is 7 to 1. The type of fuel supply is through a K36Zh carburetor. The proportion of gasoline mixed with oil is 25 to 1 (during break-in - 20 to 1). Gearbox - 4 steps. The main drive type of the motorcycle is chain. The brake system is both front and rear drum type. The base of the Jupiter 2 motorcycle reaches 1430 mm. The volume of the fuel tank is 18 liters. Dry weight

The Soviet motorcycle industry was diverse and replete with various models of motorcycles. The IZH motorcycle brand was produced from 1929 to 2008. The plant where they were created was located in the glorious and old city of Izhevsk. And one of the most popular motorcycles in the USSR was the IZH-2 “Jupiter”. Let's take a closer look at this model.

Motorcycle with sidecar. Driving Features

A motorcycle with a sidecar can baffle even an experienced motorcyclist. After all, an “appendage” in the form of a stroller attached to the unit makes the vehicle drive completely differently. The crew becomes three-wheeled, and therefore the following questions arise: “Why does the iron horse lead along the entire road, constantly tilting to the left or right? How to avoid tipping over when entering a turn? And what are the basic rules for driving this unit?”

Attaching the stroller

A motorcycle with a sidecar “Ural” or “Dnepr” is a real happiness for tuj owners. After all, these vehicles are sold already assembled, with a stroller attached. Therefore, you won’t have to bother with assembling the complete “motorcycle + cradle” set.

If your choice fell on a motorcycle with an Izh sidecar, then upon purchase you will receive two separately packaged parts. This is the motorcycle itself and its “appendage” in the form of a cradle. The owner will have to assemble them into one whole himself. As a rule, this procedure does not give the lucky owner much pleasure.

Basically, in addition to this kit, manufacturers also offer instructions for assembling and installing the stroller. Therefore, armed with patience and tools, you can easily put the cradle in the right place.

First trip

If the motorcycle with sidecar is new, then it needs to be broken in first. Do not forget about safety rules and always wear a helmet when driving this vehicle.

During the first run-in, pay attention to how well the clutch of the iron horse is, whether the gears shift smoothly, whether the brake works, the sound signal, as well as the headlights and dimensions. If you can confidently conclude that these elements are working, feel free to continue on your way - this motorcycle with a sidecar can be used as a means of transportation

Checking the correct installation of the stroller

Let's move on to the most interesting part - the basics of driving a motorcycle with a sidecar. First, you should check whether the cradle is correctly attached to this vehicle. This is quite easy to do. You should find a flat section of the road without any slopes, as well as defects in the road surface, at least two hundred meters long. It is advisable that there are no other traffic participants on the road.

The check is as follows: release the damper, engage second gear and ride the motorcycle over this section of the road at a speed of approximately twenty kilometers per hour, without accelerating or braking. When riding this way, a motorcycle with a sidecar will independently choose the necessary trajectory along which it will move.

Now we can draw conclusions. If the road is truly flat and the sidecar is installed correctly, the motorcycle will go almost exactly in a straight line. If the motorcycle steers to the right or to the left, the sidecar is installed incorrectly. This happens due to the fact that attaching an “appendage” in the form of a cradle shifts the center of gravity of the motorcycle. In order to cope with this problem, it is necessary to adjust the toe. As a rule, information about this can be found in the motorcycle manual. If you cannot adjust the toe yourself, then you will definitely get help at the service center.

Main difference

A motorcycle with a sidecar requires a completely different driving style compared to an iron horse without an attached cradle. This is definitely worth considering, especially if you are using a machine with a stroller for the first time.

When driving a single motorcycle, you adjust the trajectory of movement by tilting the vehicle in one direction or another. While the main thing in a motorcycle with an “add-on weight” is the steering wheel. By changing your driving style, you can easily control this vehicle.

"IZH Jupiter-2" - characteristics

All the bells and whistles, looks, innovative details don't matter much

The only thing you should pay close attention to is the technical specifications. They can tell you about the bike what the shine hides

And so, the main center of any vehicle, and a motorcycle is one of them, is the engine. Therefore, the first thing you need to look at is the motor. IZH 2 Jupiter has a gasoline power unit, which is classified as a two-stroke system. This means that the pistons are lubricated by supplying the main fuel. That is, right at the gas station, in addition to gasoline, engine oil must also be poured into the fuel tank. At first glance there are a lot of details, but once you get used to it, you don’t notice it. The Jupiter engine has only two cylinders.

Their total volume is three hundred and forty-seven cubic centimeters. The IZh engine is capable of developing a power of nineteen horsepower. This is normal for a light motorcycle. The good old carburetor is responsible for supplying fuel. You should not forget the main thing: practical characteristics. “IZH 2 Jupiter” on relatively flat terrain is capable of reaching a speed of one hundred and ten kilometers per hour. Fuel consumption is low: four and a half liters of “eightie” per hundred kilometers of working distance. Jupiter is cooled using air currents. Not very effective, of course. But it was relevant for that time.

Muffler cleaning methods

The exhaust system has no adjustments, therefore, it is necessary to clean it in a timely manner.

Filters that dampen sound must be removed and burned. You can do it over a fire or use a blowtorch. Cool quickly using cold water. This leads to carbon deposits peeling off. Clean the pipe with a metal brush.

The next method is to burn off the carbon deposits and remaining fuel inside. Let's place the pipe vertically, you need to set it on fire from below, a draft will appear and all the carbon inside will burn out. All that remains is to remove the combustion residues.

A gentle way to clean. Use a chemical solution to soften deposits. The solution is prepared for a liter of water, 25 grams of caustic soda, 33 grams of carbonic soda, 8.5 grams of soap. Heat the solution strongly until almost boiling. Pour it inside the muffler and wait a couple of hours. After this, rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Main disadvantages

All modifications were marked with a quality mark and were generally reliable. Owners of equipment made at the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant were given headaches by:

  • A weak generator, the power of which was not enough to power all electrical appliances at night.
  • An ignition system made according to a separate circuit for each cylinder. In general, it is quite reliable, but setting the ignition evenly on the Izh Jupiter 3 is not an easy task.
  • The electrical wiring is not of entirely satisfactory quality. Owners of new cars often complained that the wires were mixed up at the factory.

Nevertheless, the popularity of the model was great, and if anything stopped potential buyers, it was the fairly high price. Over the course of a year, the plant produced over 250,000 cars that went on public sale. The successful design became the basis for the creation of the following modifications, the latest of which was Izh Jupiter-5.

Modifications

IZH "Jupiter" with index "5" came off the assembly line in 1985, two years earlier than the IZH "Planet-5" model. The appearance of the first Jupiter-5 was almost completely identical to its predecessor, Jupiter-4.

But the then new engine had slightly reduced power, but increased torque. Among the visible changes, Jupiter-5 was distinguished by a different finning of the cylinders, as well as a new flange mounting of the exhaust pipes.

IZH "Jupiter-5" was a middle-class motorcycle designed for traveling on roads with various surfaces. Three modifications of this motorcycle were produced.

The standard version was a modification without a side trailer, but equipped with fastenings for it, as well as a modification already equipped with a side trailer - a motorcycle with a sidecar.

The second modification was “Tourist”. This motorcycle was equipped with a side trailer; in addition, it had a spare wheel with increased lugs. This modification was designated as IZH “Jupiter-5T”.

The third modification was designated “Lux”, or IZH “Jupiter-5L”. This motorcycle was not equipped with a side trailer, and there were no fastening elements on the motorcycle for it. But it was equipped with a small fairing, there were also knee roll bars and a towed luggage rack.

In our time

Almost every self-respecting concern is developing motorcycles with sidecars. Even if they no longer produce this model, it is still possible to find references to it. Moreover, as we mentioned earlier, the motorcycle does not have to leave the factory with a sidecar. The 21st century is a time for any whims for the client’s money, which means that it is technically possible to add a stroller to almost any motorcycle. Yes, there is even a maxi-scooter with a sidecar! That’s why it’s a “maxi”, even though it’s a scooter. It turns out that the appearance of a sidecar on a motorcycle is a matter of technology. So why are strollers still popular?

Tribute to history

Conservatives come first. The argument that a motorcycle with a sidecar is a true labor comes up very often. At the same time, not everyone rides such motorcycles every day; many restore them for pleasure. But at events and the opening/closing of the season, motorcycles with sidecars are stars of any column!

Capacity

Traveling on a motorcycle with a sidecar is a pleasure; you throw all your things into the cradle and go. No need to move things around on the seat or hang extra bags.

Moreover, it’s not scary to take children and teenagers with you, because according to the legislation in the traffic rules we read that it is allowed to transport children in a stroller, when there is a restriction on a simple motorcycle. But what about when you have pets? Also in the stroller? There are a lot of tourists traveling around the world with four-legged companions at their side - damn cute!

All terrain

With a sidecar the motorcycle is much more stable. Hence the widespread interest in them in winter. In winter, “sidecars” are in the same top as cross-country and enduro. Torque and load capacity give rise to legends about the cross-country ability of motorcycles. In addition, it is stupid to cross out the military past, which taught designers many tricks in order to adapt motorcycles with sidecars to amazing capabilities. All this outrage about the price of motorcycles is because many do not understand the difference between an old motorcycle, which still remembers perestroika, and a modern one, which is already a level higher in manufacturing and is valued in other countries.

Load capacity

Until now, motorcycles with sidecars replace immortal ponies all over the world, when an ordinary cradle is replaced with a platform for transporting goods.

Sport

Have you ever seen motorcycle racing with sidecars? ABOUT! You must watch this! Moreover, it is not clear who is cooler, the driver or his partner, who provides stability on the track with his own weight? Yes, yes, you understood correctly. In racing, a passenger prevents the motorcycle from flipping over, which would certainly happen if the driver were alone. Such races are especially popular in winter and off-road.

Customizing

In addition to restoration, motorcycles with sidecars are a huge field for activity among customizers. It is difficult to find a motorcycle exhibition where there would not be at least one “sidecar”. With them you can implement any idea, and the scale is already guaranteed! By the way, the availability of old motorcycles with sidecars provides an extra reason for novice mechanics.

Strong structure

It is no secret that many of our motorcycles with sidecars are used as combat units even today, and if you look at the warmer countries with which we have partnerships, it turns out that there our “sidecars” are ranked alongside military equipment. And in our native lands, motorcycles with side trailers are still found on public roads, albeit not among law enforcement agencies, but at some departments of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and DOSAAF.

Tuning Izh Planet Sport

Making changes to the design of a motorcycle is impractical for a number of reasons:

  1. The resource of many components and assemblies is small. For this reason, it is almost impossible to improve their characteristics without causing damage.
  2. An Izh Planet Sport 350 restored to its original condition is valued significantly higher than its tuned versions.

However, if there is a desire, something can be done. Many athletes participating in cross-country or circuit racing competitions modified the Izh Planet Sport engine, making various changes to its design. A frequently asked question is how many cubic meters can the engine capacity be increased by.

Engine tuning (boosting)

When boosting the engine, the sports team masters altered many things, from the connecting rod and piston group to the exhaust system. The maximum that could be obtained by pressing in a liner from a CZ 500 and using the piston that came with it was a little over four hundred cubic centimeters of working volume.

But such boosting of the Izh Planet Sport engine requires serious professional skills and sophisticated equipment. The thin walls of a standard cast-iron sleeve pressed into an aluminum cylinder do not allow the engine to be bored up to 500 cc.

The exhaust system cannot cope with the removal of the increased volume of exhaust gases, and the support bearings cannot cope with the increased loads. All the talk that there was a factory version of the Izh Planet Sport 500cc is nothing more than a fairy tale. But boring a cylinder is not the only way to increase power and add agility to a motorcycle.

DIY tuning

Installing a new carburetor is a proven way to improve the performance of the Izh Sport without making significant changes to the design. Over the years, Mikuni has released many new, increasingly advanced models with a diffuser diameter of 32 mm.

Engine tuning can be done in other ways without affecting its mechanical components. Starting and stable operation of single-cylinder engines has always presented certain problems, which can be solved by installing electronic ignition on the Izh Planet Sport. Such kits are produced by several manufacturers, and their installation does not take much time.

When using BKSZ with power units of other modifications, you should be very careful. When installing the ignition from a Minsk motorcycle on the Izh Planet Sport, you must remember that the crankshafts of the engines of these machines rotate in opposite directions. The wires going from the coil to ground and the switch will have to be swapped. Such an engine modification is quite justified.

Engine

All work must begin with it, because it determines what the frame, landing, and suspension will be like. The power unit can be successfully boosted, but the following points must be taken into account:

  • Boring should be carried out on a special machine;
  • Only a motor in good condition, either new or overhauled, is suitable;
  • as a result of the changes, the torque goes into the high-speed zone, which means the bike becomes more oriented towards rally racing than for quiet riding;
  • The pistons should be replaced and the octane number improved from 93 to safely increase the compression ratio to 8.5.

Motorcycles "Java"

Another legendary Jawa motorcycle dates back to 1929. This brand of road transport belonged to a Czechoslovak company and was the dream of many Soviet motorcycle enthusiasts. Motorcycles were used not only for everyday travel, but also participated in various racing competitions. In the 21st century, the production of Java has not stopped; some models are still in demand.

Jawa 350 Classic

The motorcycle is based on a 2-cylinder, 2-stroke system with a 4-speed gearbox. There is no connection between gasoline and oil thanks to a separate lubrication system. The motorcycle frame is strong, which allows you to load motor vehicles up to 200 kg. It is possible to attach a car seat.

If we compare the Jawa 350 Classic 638 model with others, more expensive and equipped, it wins in several respects: maintenance is simple and inexpensive, fuel consumption is low, spare parts are available for sale at a low price.

Technical characteristics of "Java" 350 classic:

  • dimensions – 2110×750×1070;
  • engine capacity - 343.5 cubic meters. cm;
  • power – 23.1 l. With.;
  • maximum speed – 125 km/h;
  • gasoline consumption per 100 km – 4 liters;
  • manual gearbox.

Jawa 350 Classic Sport

“Classic Sport” is an improved version of Jаwa 350 Classic. It was presented in 2015 at the Moscow exhibition “Motopark”. You can distinguish the model from other Java motorcycles by the “outdated” design of London in the 60s, when street motorcycle racers converted inconvenient and bulky motorcycles for themselves, removing everything unnecessary. The two-wheeled vehicle turned out to be light and maneuverable, with streamlined elements.

Jawa 350 Classic Sport is designed for solo travel and is equipped with one comfortable seat. The low steering wheel allows you to comfortably take the position of the rider, fully concentrating on the ride. The “rarity” of the motorcycle is reminiscent of its classic elements: a wide chrome exhaust pipe, a round headlight and a traditional red body color.

The motorcycle has a lot of advantages that make for a comfortable and maneuverable ride: a 343 cc engine, a separate lubrication system, a reliable disc-type brake system, a laconic dashboard and an automatic starter.

Specifications:

  • engine capacity – 343.5 cubic meters;
  • number of cylinders – 2;
  • number of cycles – 2;
  • power – 23 l. With.;
  • maximum acceleration speed – 125 km/h;
  • gasoline consumption per 100 km – 4 liters;
  • air cooling system.

Jawa 350 Lux

The presented model is a classic version of a street class road motorcycle. It combines elements of older models, but also has individual modern features. The front of the motorcycle has a classic single headlight, and the electronic instrument panel is simple and understandable even for novice motorcyclists.

The basis of the two-wheeled design is a strong steel alloy frame. Its rigidity improves maneuverability on uneven roads, makes the vehicle maneuverable and increases load capacity. The holistic appearance of the Java 350 Lux clearly resembles a “classic”.

Specifications:

  • dimensions – 2110×750×1070 mm;
  • engine capacity – 343 cubic meters. cm;
  • number of cycles – 2;
  • number of cylinders – 2;
  • power – 23.1 l. With.;
  • maximum speed – 125 km/h;
  • Fuel consumption per 100 km is 4 liters.

Jawa 660 Sportard

The most powerful Java model in terms of technical equipment is the 660 Sportard. The engine capacity of 600 cubic meters affects the ability to reach speeds of up to 250 km/h. The motorcycle covers distances along the highway easily and maneuverably. For beginner motorbikers, this is an excellent tool - flexible and playful. And externally, the 660 Sportard looks more aggressive and modern than the classic versions.

The technical characteristics have their own characteristics: the power plant is “single-barrel”, equipped with an electronic injection system - EFI

The frame frame has a high degree of rigidity, and this is an important condition for off-road driving - the motorcycle does not twitch and is easy to control. The upgraded suspension of the bike allows you to take turns at the same speed without pressing the brake pedal

The technical specifications are as follows:

  • dimensions – 2100×760×1250 mm;
  • cylinders – 1;
  • number of measures – 4;
  • engine capacity – 651.9 cubic meters. cm;
  • power – 48 l. With.;
  • gas tank volume – 17 liters;
  • Manual transmission – 5-speed.

Multi-Task Motorcycle Trailer

A long time ago, my brother wanted an efficient way to deliver newspapers along the road route and maybe also a way to get his two beagles to the dog park on his motorcycle. Side hacks and trailers were discussed, and finally we chose a trailer that fit the bill.

While exploring, we came across a one-wheel trailer. Several of them were for scooters and motorcycles. Lots of good ideas here, some of which were incorporated into my trailer design.

I thought something like this would be great for carrying things while traveling. Now that I'm retired, I seem to have the free time to take longer trips. So, after some thought, some sketching, and some specifications in mind, I contracted with a welder to build my trailer.

Close the hitch point. This high hitch height presented some problems. But I managed with what I had, and there are other trailers that are being lifted successfully. I may have installed the hitch lower after some time. It will take some time to figure out how to fit the hitch attachment into the available space without cutting holes in the plastic. This hitch has been slightly modified since this picture appeared. Some reinforcement was added to prevent the rear fender mounted tongue from bending, and closer tolerance bolts were used to remove any loose play in the fittings. This would allow for some pretty severe trailer wobble without these fixes. But now everything is fine.

Post-war breakthrough

During the period of hostilities, the Izhevsk Motorcycle Plant was focused on the production of machine guns and small arms. The revival of the motorcycle industry began almost immediately after the Victory, in 1946. According to the law on reparations, drawings and equipment from German factories were delivered from Germany to Izhevsk, which gave a powerful impetus to development. A new design bureau was created at the enterprise, and preparations began for the production of a new model of the IZH-350 motorcycle, the design was based on the German model DKW-350.

The prototype of the German industry was adapted to Soviet requirements and the capabilities of related production. The assembly of IZH motorcycles began at the arms factory. From this moment on, the Izhevsk Motorcycle Plant became the leader in motorcycle production in the Soviet Union.

Pipes, muffler for motorcycles IZH Jupiter, Planet 5

The engine of IZH motorcycles is two-stroke, so the fuel combustion process is noisier than a four-stroke engine, and a larger amount of unburned gases is also released into the atmosphere. At the moment of release, the exhaust gases have a high temperature that is dangerous to the health of the motorcyclist. Therefore, the IL muffler pipes must have a more complex design. Comply with safety standards and not cause harm to human health and the environment.

Structural nuances

It is worth noting that the model from the designers of the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant was at one time considered one of the most modern. The developers introduced a new body into the modification, modernized the engine and implemented the best developments in the field of creating two-cylinder “iron horses”.

Considering that a completely new anti-vibration system and a fundamentally different fuel tank configuration were mounted on the old frame, the bike in question became a real breakthrough in the segment of domestic two-wheeled motorized equipment. A more powerful multi-disc clutch can also be considered an advantage of the model.

The Izh Jupiter-4 vehicle, the characteristics of which are given above, has received an updated shock absorption system and electronic equipment. The last node is very similar to the analogue used in the legendary sports version “Planet-Sport”. It is from this variation that the battery and most other elements related to electrical equipment, including the generator and coil, were borrowed.

Tuning for the Ural motorcycle or its restoration

Here a lot depends on the condition and modification of the bike. If a representative of one of the latest lines arrives in your garage, which is in perfect order externally and runs, be prepared for the fact that remodeling it will turn out to be quite expensive - you will have to pay relatively a lot for components. Add to this the price of an iron horse that came off the assembly line, starting at 300,000 rubles, and think about whether the changes are worth such expenses.

It’s a different matter if you somehow become the owner of a rare specimen: restoring it is not just a matter of honor, but also quite a profitable business. By restoring a rare model, you will bring history back to life and get a status vehicle that can be sold for good money.

And the third case, if you have a very ordinary Ural with a cradle: tuning will allow you to diversify the design of an ordinary motorcycle or increase its technical characteristics and at the same time will cost a very reasonable amount.

There is room to turn around

The technology turned out to be not only reliable, but also tenacious. It is found quite often on the roads and in the garages of motorcycle tuning and restoration enthusiasts. When you start tidying up a used motorcycle, remember that the wiring diagram for the Izh Jupiter 3 has been changed several times by the manufacturer.

Finding reliable data is hardly possible anymore. If there is no charging or one of the devices does not work, it is unlikely that it will be possible to find the cause using the description of a model from a different year of manufacture.

If you are going to use the equipment constantly, then since standard equipment operates at a voltage of 6 volts, it makes sense to convert Izh Jupiter 3 to 12 volts. To do this you will have to replace with new ones:

  • Generator.
  • Semiconductor rectifier (SRC).
  • Ignition coil.
  • Turn relay.
  • Light bulbs (all).
  • Battery.

At the same time, it makes sense to install BSZ. Electronic ignition will greatly simplify engine starting in any weather and make its operation more stable. Having done this, you will no longer regularly wonder how to set the ignition correctly.

During the remodeling, you can redesign the Izh Jupiter 3 wiring diagram yourself, or use one of the options posted on the Internet. But before you get down to business, keep in mind that it is very difficult to perform high-quality tuning with your own hands.

You will need special tools and a variety of skills. There are many options for upgrading the Izh Jupiter 3, but they are all designed for people who are technically savvy.
