Yamaha NMAX 150 scooter: transport for everyday life

The dynamic, maneuverable NMAX 150 scooter from the Japanese manufacturer is suitable for use in urban environments.
This maxi-scooter model is characterized by high stability, which makes city trips comfortable and safe. To increase acceleration dynamics, the manufacturer equipped the scooter with a four-stroke liquid-cooled engine and a direct fuel injection system. The anti-lock braking system and lightweight frame provide excellent handling of the Japanese vehicle.

The initial scooter package includes:

  • disc brake system;
  • spacious compartment under the seat;
  • headlights with LED lamps;
  • aerodynamic glass;
  • liquid crystal instrument panel.

The scooter of this model looks like a sports motorcycle. Maximum engine power reaches 7,500 rpm. Fuel tank with a volume of 6.6 liters. When fully refueled, this amount of fuel will be enough for 300 km, the operating consumption is small - 1 liter per 45-50 km.

The ignition switch is closed with a special cover, which can only be opened with the back of the key to prevent unauthorized access. The driver and passenger can easily fit on the seat of such a scooter. The trip will be comfortable and safe. Such transport is the best solution for moving around city streets.

Yamaha TMAX 2015 Review

Believe it or not, this is a real sports scooter.

There was a time when the motorcycle world looked down on scooters. Perhaps because scooters were weird, underpowered, funny looking machines. But that's a thing of the past now. The scooter class has grown from being a toy for students to ride, and now includes a wide range of models of varying power and cost.

The Yamaha PR department called the TMAX “a sportbike among scooters,” and it is the TMAX that is often called one of the inspirations for the fashion for expensive and powerful scooters. Let's see why TMAX is so good.

Comfortable driving position, nimble engine and excellent handling - all in a scooter.

One of the common weaknesses of scooters is the excessive flexibility of the frame due to its step-through design for a moped-like riding position. Despite the fact that the TMAX is designed differently from a typical scooter, and you sit on it without stepping on the platform, but by crossing your leg slightly to the other side, the chassis still has a narrow section between the front and rear wheels. Yamaha's designers solved this problem by using a die-cast aluminum frame in which the engine is the load-bearing element of the structure, much like they do with sportbikes. This beauty has 41mm inverted forks up front and an aluminum swingarm at the rear. And holding all this aluminum above the asphalt are two 15-inch cast wheels with Dunlop Sportmax GPR-100 tires (front tire - 120/70-15, rear - 160/60-15).

The TMAX's suspension is no less impressive, with 119 millimeters of front travel and 116 millimeters of rear travel, which is more than enough to handle bumps on city roads. Braking is excellent, with dual 267mm front discs squeezed by radially mounted four-piston calipers. The rear disc is larger (282 mm), but is compressed by a single-piston caliper. It is strange that with such a braking system, Yamaha decided not to give ABS to the American TMAX models. However, in Europe ABS is available as an option.

Inverted fork - yes. The radially mounted calipers are in place. Is this a sportbike? But no!

The TMAX is powered by a forward-leaning 530cc inline-twin engine. The engine is equipped with dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) and four valves per cylinder, and the powerband is focused on low and mid-range speeds; The design is completed by a continuously variable transmission that maintains engine speed in the optimal range. When driving uphill on a highway on-ramp, the ECU keeps the engine at the optimal rpm range, so the TMAX flows easier and smoother than some scooters with smaller engines or poorly optimized power delivery. At a cruising speed of around 120 kilometers per hour with an engine speed of 5500 rpm, the TMAX feels confident and quite smooth, and the scooter does not feel like it is over-exerting itself. Closer to 150 kilometers per hour, a slight vibration begins to reach the driver, but the engine still does not experience any difficulties. In truth, the TMAX engine showed weakness only when the scooter was ridden at an altitude of more than 1500 meters above sea level. Then it became clear that this was only a 500 cc engine.

In the city, the TMAX has excellent and clear throttle response. Most scooters have a slight initial hesitation when taking off from a standstill, as the continuously variable transmission must gain speed before transferring power to the rear wheel. In the case of the TMAX, forward motion begins as soon as you turn the throttle - it even caught one test driver by surprise when he turned left across the lane from a slip lane. Since there was no delay, the TMAX rushed forward a fraction of a second earlier than the driver expected, causing him to almost scratch the scooter. Of course, this won't be a problem for a TMAX owner, and is just a cost of being a test driver who has been riding a variety of scooters of all shapes and sizes for a long time.

The start button is the only thing you need to press to start the scooter. After you've removed the kickstand, of course.

However, the scooter unpleasantly surprised with its wide dimensions. The TMAX is already quite tall in terms of seat height for a scooter (800mm), but the shape of the body underneath the seat makes the situation even worse. The hips of an average-sized driver will now and then rest against the body (like when you sit on a horse in the saddle, and your legs surround the animal), even if you stand on your tiptoes. The TMAX has a lot of ground clearance, which necessitated a high seat, but the width of the scooter is not entirely clear, especially since the luggage compartment under the seat is quite small, and its volume is severely limited by the 15-liter gas tank. One XL full-face helmet fits there, but the seat is unlikely to close easily and immediately. However, Yamaha designers have included a helmet cable that you can use to securely attach your helmet lid (or your passenger's) to the seat locking mechanism.

The driver's seat is generally quite spacious and comfortable. Drivers with long legs will appreciate the ability to rest their feet on the angled footrests. The steering wheel grips are located low: this does not cause discomfort, but it is still strange. Despite this, steering is quite light and responsive. As is typical with scooters, kickback from the front tire is minimal, but the TMAX can hold very tight lean angles without any hesitation or twitching. Even after hitting a steep bump, only the footrest support touched the asphalt.

Don't let that tapered seat front shape fool you. The TMAX is even wider under the seat, so if you have short legs it will reach far to the ground. Although the pad is adjustable.

It's not entirely clear why an expensive premium scooter doesn't have an easily adjustable windshield. This issue will be especially acute for drivers who are about 180 centimeters tall when driving on the highway. The TMAX provides good weather protection, but turbulence from the top of the windshield in the down position creates quite an annoying noise. Turbulence does not press or push the driver's head, but it does become uncomfortable in the helmet. If you place the glass as high as possible, this will solve the problem, but you have to look for a set of tools nearby.

How confident does the TMAX feel when tilted? Well, do you see this shine on the asphalt under the headlight? It's rain.

However, what really pleased me was the wireless ignition. As long as you have the key fob at your disposal, you can start the scooter, open the luggage compartment under the seat and even lock/unlock the steering wheel. In case the key fob battery suddenly fails, there is a traditional ignition socket in the lockable glove compartment near the dashboard. It also opens the trunk.

Of course, we really liked the keyless ignition on the TMAX, but the key fob is still too big

In general, the new Yamaha TMAX 2015 is a very interesting choice for a driver looking for a scooter, but one that would not be embarrassing to ride motorcycles with friends.

There is only one color for the Yamaha TMAX 2015 - black.
