Buran 4T-4TD is one of the most popular Russian-made snowmobiles. The machine belongs to the class of utilitarian snowmobiles, among which it is one of the most affordable - at least compared to its competitors. This model was developed by qualified engineers who have adopted more than 40 years of summer experience - this is a developer of high-quality Russian products that began producing its first snowmobiles in the early 1970s. In particular, it was in 1971 that a prototype of the Buran snowmobile was first presented. Of course, over the years the car has gone through several upgrades and generations, and in 2014 the latest generation, called Buran 4T-4TD, was released. This is an original model, equipped with a proven layout and modern technology to meet modern standards and regulations. The equipment received an economical four-stroke engine, but the unique “Buranovskaya” design scheme deserves special attention - it consists of one rotary ski and two tracks. This arrangement is expensive and very rare in its class, since even imported models have only one track and two rotary skis. In addition, among other features, let us pay attention to the productive power unit with the Kohler injection system, which is responsible for the rational distribution of the fuel mixture. The motor develops little power, which is enough for active driving on difficult roads, as well as for transporting heavy loads. Fuel consumption has been reduced by 15% compared to its predecessor. The developers have seriously modified the exhaust system, in which the pipes have undergone modernization, and the muffler is rigidly attached to the frame of the snowmobile.
In general, the manufacturer fulfilled all the main requirements of its potential customers - before launching mass production of the next generation of the Buran snowmobile. These are requirements that relate to improvements in practicality, handling, environmental friendliness, spaciousness and load capacity. It was also possible to significantly reduce the noise and vibration emitted by the power plant at idle and high speeds. And despite a significant set of improvements, the updated model turned out to be not much more expensive, unlike its predecessor, which is inferior to the Buran 4T-4TD model in almost all respects.
The standard equipment of snowmobiles of the Buran 4T/4TD family includes an electric engine starter. Please note that the 4TD model is an improved version of the Buran 4T snowmobile. So, in the first case, the snowmobile of the same name (4TD) has an elongated platform, which is designated by the index D in the name of the machine. In addition, the improved version received an increased wheelbase to be able to transport various loads. A spotlight is of no small importance for the convenience of working in the dark. As for the model with a short wheelbase (4T), it is capable of transporting up to 250 kg of cargo, while the 4TD version can handle loads weighing up to 500 kg. Thus, the 4TD snowmobile can act as a tractor.

In addition to the above improvements, the vehicle also has several features that make the Buran 4T/4TD family suitable for business operations, as well as other strategically important tasks - for example, military and defense events. So, especially for these purposes, a snowmobile is capable of moving in an economical mode, with minimal consumption of consumables (fuel and oil). At the same time, the car can be subjected to increased loads without fear of excessive fuel consumption. Moreover, this can be done in difficult off-road conditions.
In 2015, a modernized version of the snowmobile was released with a modified appearance, as well as technical improvements and changes in the control system. In particular, a new right steering wheel unit with an extended plastic gas lever has appeared. A new throttle cable with a nylon insert was also installed. Such innovations, at first glance, may seem insignificant, but in practice this has led to more comfortable handling. For example, throttle control is smoother and easier. To meet modern requirements, the steering wheel is heated, which is an important option for comfortable work in low-temperature climate zones.
The Buran 4TD snowmobile received several serious differences from its predecessors:
- Toxic emissions reduced by 80 percent
- Noise and vibration levels reduced by 30%
- Significantly reduced fuel consumption
- Expanded basic equipment, also available with an electric starter and an emergency manual starter.
Fuel consumption of snowmobiles Taiga, Buran, Tiksy
A snowmobile is an off-road mechanical vehicle designed for operation on snow cover.
Operating fuel consumption largely depends on the technical condition of the snowmobile, atmospheric factors (temperature and humidity of the surrounding air, altitude), factors influencing the amount of resistance to movement (load on the snowmobile, the presence and weight of a towed trailer, speed, depth and snow cover density in a particular region), etc.
Considering that the operational fuel consumption of a snowmobile can vary widely on the same snowmobile with constant adjustments depending on changing operating conditions, manufacturers of snowmobiles, including foreign ones, do not establish operating fuel consumption standards in the operational documentation.
As a controlled parameter when carrying out tests in the technical conditions for snowmobiles manufactured by JSC RM, the value of the control fuel consumption (in liters per 100 km), determined when the snowmobile moves on snow cover with a density of 0.30 to 0.35 g/cm³, is established. (well-worn snowmobile trail) at a constant speed of 30 km/h.
The value of control fuel consumption for various models of snowmobiles in climatic conditions characteristic of the Yaroslavl region is given in Table 1.
Table 1
Snowmobile (model) | Control fuel consumption per 100 km, l, no more
with one driver | at full weight of the snowmobile
Buran A, Buran AE, Buran AD, Buran ADE, Buran ATE, Buran ADTE, Buran L, Buran LE, Buran LD, Buran LDE | 23 | 25 |
Buran 4T, Buran 4TD | 15 | 18 |
Taiga Varyag 550 | 25 | 27 |
Taiga Attack 551 II | 24 | 26 |
Taiga Bars 850 | 20 | 22 |
Tayga Patrul 550 SWT | 25 | 27 |
Tayga Patrul 551 SWT | 24 | 26 |
Tiksy 250 | − | 15 |
Based on the above, I believe that it is almost impossible to establish a single standard for the operating fuel consumption of a snowmobile for all regions.
We recommend that you set the operating fuel consumption standard based on the average statistical value established based on the results of actual operation typical for your region.
To establish the standard operating fuel consumption of a snowmobile, we propose the following methodology:
- Several technically sound snowmobiles (preferably checked to ensure that the control fuel consumption corresponds to the data in Table 1) should be completely filled with fuel;
- record (or reset) the initial odometer readings (trip meter) of each snowmobile;
- carry out controlled operation of snowmobiles (without refueling) with the performance of real tasks and functions, at the usual speed and load for this work in the road conditions typical for this region;
- record the odometer readings of each snowmobile upon completion of controlled operation, calculate the amount of mileage completed (S, km);
- by adding fuel using a measuring container to the fuel tanks, establish the amount of fuel actually consumed by each snowmobile (V, l);
- calculate the operating fuel consumption for each snowmobile using the formula: GT = V/S·100 (liters/100 km);
- Based on the results of controlled operation, an internal document for the organization shall establish a standard for operational fuel consumption when operating snowmobiles.
Considering that most snowmobiles run on a fuel mixture of gasoline and motor oil, the operating consumption of motor oil is determined depending on the amount of operating fuel consumption in the ratio by volume:
- Snowmobiles "Taiga":
- for motor oils "Taiga-2T", "Ekoil-2T-Arctic" - 1:40 (with a break-in of 1:33).
- Snowmobiles "Buran":
- for motor oils M-8V, MS-20 - 1:25 (with a break-in of 1:20);
- for motor oils “Buran-2T”, “Taiga-2T”, “Ekoil-2T-Arctic”, “Ekoil-2T-Super” - 1:33 (with a running-in period of 1:25).
More detailed information on the fuels and lubricants used. fluids, refer to your snowmobile owner's manual.

Engine
Snowmobiles of the Buran 4T/4TD family are equipped with a two-cylinder engine with a 4-stroke layout. The engine is provided by Kohler, which is one of the foreign suppliers for. The engine power in nominal mode is 29 horsepower. The cylinder diameter is 83 mm and the engine displacement is 0.7 liters. The piston stroke is 67 mm. A foreign-made motor has proven itself well in harsh natural areas - for example, in the northern regions of Russia. It is quite economical and environmentally friendly at high loads.
MODEL DESCRIPTION
By creating this modification, we fulfilled the wishes of customers: increased comfort and fuel efficiency, and also reduced vibration and noise levels.
The “BURAN 4T / 4TD” model with a Kohler four-stroke injection engine (29 hp) appeared in 2014. The snowmobile has a modified exhaust system: the pipe is modified, the muffler mount is moved to the frame.
The improvements did not result in an increase in the retail price of the snowmobile. “BURAN 4T / 4TD” are the most affordable snowmobiles with a four-stroke engine among full-fledged snow machines equipped with similar power plants.
Both models are equipped as standard with an electric engine start system. The letter “D” means a model with an extended platform.
“BURAN 4 TD” is equipped as standard with a spotlight, and a long wheelbase with a cargo area allows you to transport luggage, fuel cans, as well as fishing gear and hunting accessories. In the short model, the weight of the towed trailer is 250 kg, and with the long wheelbase of the snowmobile – 500 kg.
Do you need a snowmobile for business needs? The choice is obvious: “BURAN 4T / 4TD”. The main advantages of the model are its efficiency and the ability to tow massive loads in the most difficult off-road conditions.

Reviews
- Yaroslav, Leningrad region. Cool snowmobile that I've been using for over five years. The car does not cause any particular complaints in terms of reliability and controllability. In addition, the snowmobile is an excellent rogue - thanks to as many as two installed tracks. The device starts quickly at minus 40 degrees. At the moment, the mileage is approaching 80 thousand km. I've already been everywhere - went fishing, hunting, or just rode and traveled. The car is easy to maintain and cheaper to maintain than foreign cars. Buran consumes 92 gasoline, the engine is quite noisy, but very economical. Unfortunately, the dashboard only has a speedometer, but I would also like a tachometer... We decided to save money on something, so to speak. The Buran 4T snowmobile rides smoothly on any road - packed snow or loose surface. The steering is clear and predictable, but turning the steering wheel requires a noticeable effort, especially at high speeds.
- Vasily, Krasnoyarsk. Buran 4T/4TD is a universal Russian snowmobile, it’s like a tractor! – it is so off-road and not afraid of loose and deep snow. I must admit that this machine is one of the most reliable - and this is not only my opinion, but my friends and acquaintances - experienced fishermen and hunters - think so. The car experiences difficulties if it ends up on ice or wet snow - in such conditions the car does not obey the steering wheel at all, so you have to slow down. Perhaps this is the main quibble. Well, except that the engine overheats if you drive for several hours. Fuel consumption could have been lower, given the low power. But I was pleased with the support of 92 gasoline.
- Vitaly, Stavropol region. I have owned the Buran 4TD snowmobile since 2014. The car was purchased as soon as it was presented - on pre-order. At the moment, the mileage exceeds 1500 kilometers. During this time, I had to change the transmission chain several times, and most recently I discovered that the speed fork lock bolt was missing. If I had not noticed in time (before leaving), then the lower part of the gearbox would have broken, and then the chain itself. This is a very serious problem, in which case I would probably have stayed for a long time somewhere in the taiga, where there was not a single soul. Overall, the snowmobile is not bad, but it needs to be serviced regularly, or just checked for possible problems. In my opinion, it would be better if the manufacturer made the lower part of the gearbox from a more durable and lightweight material - for example, aluminum. Then the above problem might not exist.
