Characteristics of “Ski doo” snowmobiles and their features

The BRP Ski-Doo Expedition SE 1200 4-TEC is a high-performance touring snowmobile that is in demand on the global market. Before us is the 2022 model, designed for professional users who value comfort, convenience, functionality and reliability. This is exactly what the car in question is, with a conservative appearance. The stylish design of the machine remains true to the corporate concept of BRP, and is practically no different from most modern snowmobiles of the famous company. The Skido Expedition 1200 BRP model has received innovative technologies to facilitate operation, and also has proven technical solutions from its predecessors. Despite this, many shortcomings have been eliminated, and undeniable advantages have been added. This model is suitable for professionals and outdoor enthusiasts for whom speed, maneuverability and high maneuverability are important. With this snowmobile you can go on long trips, and without fear of moving in the wilderness with obstacles. The BRP Skido Expedition 1200 is a universal snowmobile that has received a lot of technical advantages compared to its closest analogues.

The Skido Expedition 1200 snowmobile has successfully passed all factory endurance tests, and this has been confirmed by numerous owners who operate the machine on an ongoing basis and subject it to various loads - on high-speed and well-worn roads, as well as in deep snow. Such high performance was achieved thanks to high-quality components in the chassis, which can be described as rugged and durable. Based on this, the undeniable advantage of this snowmobile can be considered versatility and adaptation to harsh climatic conditions. As mentioned above, this is facilitated by a powerful chassis, namely the front and rear suspensions, which we will consider in more detail.

User manual

Operating complex equipment is impossible without studying the instructions.
You should pay particular attention to the maintenance rules. Failure to comply with standard regulations may result in injury or death along the way. Basic rule: a snowmobile should not move on streets and roads; even in off-road conditions, the snowmobile driver must obey the general rules along with other vehicles.

Preparing a snowmobile for operation is as follows:

  • removing the shipping brackets and removing the frame;
  • removing the protective casing from the variator;
  • installing a rear light;
  • glass installation;
  • installation and fastening of the backrest on the seat;
  • adjustable steering wheel and lock it in a comfortable position;
  • installation of a splash guard.

The check consists of making sure that there is oil in the gearbox, it is also necessary to inspect the external threaded connections, and then the fuel tank will need to be refilled. The electric start battery must be brought into working condition, the wires from the electrical harness must be connected to it according to the diagram:

  • Red to terminal+;
  • Black to terminal -.

Particular attention should be paid to the fuel mixture. An incorrect ratio of gasoline and oil will lead to problems in the power unit

Also, malfunctions may occur when using non-recommended fuel grades; many technical indicators of the snowmobile will significantly decrease.

Engine

The BRP Skido 1200 snowmobile is equipped with a proven engine, familiar from other BRP models. But for the car in question, the engine was given significant modifications. So, the power plant with the factory designation Rotax 1200 4-TEC received high traction characteristics and high torque. To achieve this, the engine has a displacement of 1.2 liters and power output is 90 horsepower. The three-cylinder unit has a four-stroke layout, which has proven itself to be the best against the background of outdated four-stroke engines familiar from its predecessors. Among other features of the power plant, we note auxiliary components that increase the reliability and endurance of the internal combustion engine. In particular, we are talking about liquid cooling and the EFI fuel system, which is an injection system that has become a worthy replacement for the outdated carburetor fuel system. The cooling system copes with overheating of all internal combustion engine elements and prevents them from receiving thermal shock under high loads - for example, at relatively high temperatures (above zero), as well as at maximum engine speeds. As standard, the motor is equipped with an electric starter. If it breaks down in the frosty season, you can use a spare manual starter. Thus, at low temperatures the engine will start in any case.

The Rotax 120 4-TEC powerplant operates with a CVT, which has high and low gears. Also included in the basic package is a reverse function (reverse) and neutral modes. Thus, there are four gears in total, which work quite clearly, without twitching or jerking when switching to higher or lower speeds. The drive pulley in the variator is made using proprietary second-generation eDrive technology, and the driven pulley is complemented by the QRS quick response system.

Reviews

  • Denis, Primorsky Krai. An excellent snowmobile, very productive, comfortable and maneuverable. I've been using it for two months. The equipment was pleased with the quality of workmanship, rich equipment - for example, there is a full power package, heated steering wheel grips and gas trigger, as well as height adjustment of the seat and steering column so that you can move while standing or sitting. By the way, while standing you can drive much faster, but this reduces driver safety. The seat is covered with a special material that does not slip and is very practical, does not get dirty or wet. For the rear passenger there is a backrest that can be removed to accommodate some cargo. The car requires high-quality fuel, and I would not call it economical. Due to the large working volume, gasoline consumption can reach 25 or more liters. The car is reliable and handles well, gives driving pleasure, but requires high expenses.
  • Alexey, Nizhny Novgorod region. The car is still being tested. I bought it at the beginning of 2022. Cool snowmobile, by the way, this is my first model. Before that I only rode quad bikes. But I decided to try new sensations, and it turned out not in vain. The Skido 1200 snowmobile impressed me in terms of handling and ride quality, it rides much smoother than an ATV. Plus, it's noticeably faster. Fuel consumption is about the same, as the engine constantly operates at high speeds, and sometimes it seems that it simply does not have enough power. But despite this, this device quickly reaches maximum speed. The engine displacement is 1.2 liters, which is quite a lot for a snowmobile of this level. I also liked the design of the car - stylish and strict. By the way, I have the black version – it’s such a gloomy and presentable car. Even the caterpillars are black. By the way, heated handles are provided for the passenger and driver - a small thing, but nice. In this case, you won’t have to worry about your hands at low temperatures. The windshield is set low, and because of this, the snow and wind hit me directly in the face, so a helmet is necessary here. The presence of a towbar in the basic configuration allows you to connect a sled and transport various loads. There is another trunk under the seat, and you can put anything in it, even spare parts or a gas canister. The engine consumes 92 gasoline.
  • Ruslan, Perm region. The BRP Skido Expedition 1200 snowmobile cost me 1.2 million rubles. It's not cheap, but the model is very powerful and makes for active driving. But unfortunately, the control lets us down here, which does not allow the engine to open up to its full potential. The steering wheel is too sharp and nervous, and drifts often occur. One slight movement of the steering wheel, and the snowmobile instantly turns at a large angle. I’ve been using the car recently, maybe it’s just out of habit, and maybe I need to dig into the settings. But that’s not all, because the handles and seat are too slippery for me, and there is a fear that with a sharp maneuver, my passenger and I will simply be thrown to the side, and the snowmobile will move on on its own. The windshield is at the optimal height, but you still have to wear a helmet, but it reduces visibility. And yet, at least some protection from snow and headwinds. I won’t recommend a snowmobile for purchase yet, since I haven’t fully tried it myself yet.

Ski-Doo Expedition 1200 SE Luxury Snowmobile Review

This snowmobile can safely be called a legend. It is recognized as one of the most luxurious, powerful and comfortable snowmobiles in its class. You can mention many more epithets for this model, but first things first.

The snowmobile comes with many features and things that many people can only dream about. Pleasant “surprises” include a front power bumper, a sliding plate, and a rear luggage case. To make it possible to pull the snowmobile out of a difficult area in a short period of time, a winch is provided under the seat. The adjustable steering column allows you to customize the control for each person, taking into account the physical characteristics of each person. 150 “mares” allow, despite the large size of the snowmobile, to ride quickly with a passenger, for whom a special backrest is provided at the back. Comfortable trips are hard to imagine without a roomy, ergonomic seat with a thick layer of padding.

The snowmobile has incredible cross-country ability. Track length (utility) is 154 inches, width 50 cm. Hook height 32 mm, reverse gear will not leave a chance even in the most severe weather conditions. A snowmobile capable of driving where it would seem impossible to do so. The presence of a low gear makes it possible to tow heavy loads, trailers and sleds. The use of the model under consideration is quite wide. A snowmobile can not only “plow”, but can also seriously compete with sports cars.

Fast driving becomes a reality thanks to the incredibly powerful 1.2 liter engine. The model of the productive element is “Rotex 1200”. This inline 3-cylinder unit is renowned for its performance all over the world. In addition to dynamics and power, it is very reliable. It is difficult to overestimate the motor resource, which is simply enormous

What else about the layout as a whole? Let's pay attention to the intake muffler, which is similar to a certain musical instrument. The engine is moved as close to the track as possible, this has a positive effect on the stability of the snow machine

The exhaust system consists of only one exhaust can, unlike other brands of snowmobiles. The rear suspension is supplemented with a pneumatic element, which improves the performance of the shock-absorbing system. The suspension at the rear of the snowmobile has 6 stiffness settings. It is possible to install automatic stiffness adjustment to maintain optimal suspension performance, regardless of the load on the snowmobile and changing road conditions.

The front suspension is similar to the shock-absorbing systems of sports versions of “Ski doo” snowmobiles

On uneven trails there is a high level of stability and comfort, which is important for “executive” snowmobiles

Owner reviews

BRP is a popular technique with a wide variety of reviews. In general, the model is assessed positively by winter recreation enthusiasts. Reviews of the powerful brp expedition 1200 se snowmobile:

“The snowmobile performs excellently in the conditions of the Primorsky Territory. Very impressive performance, comfort, maneuverability. The equipment has been in use for two months. We are pleased with the good build quality and rich basic equipment: there is an electrical package, which includes heated handles, steering wheel, and gas. Easy to use and adjustable seat and steering wheel. The seat is upholstered with non-slip material, which increases driver safety. The space for the rear passenger can easily be transformed into a platform for transporting cargo. The only negative quality of the car is increased fuel consumption, sometimes reaching 25 liters.”

“The equipment showed itself to be excellent in the conditions of central Russia. The snowmobile has just been purchased and is being tested. It is the first snowmobile in life, but it impresses with its smooth ride and stable handling. Gasoline consumption is pretty even, about the same as an ATV. The device drives quickly, which is good news. I really like the design - strict but stylish, especially my version, all in black. I saw other options, my snowmobile is presentable. The only drawback of the model is the low windshield, which impairs inspection. Equipment in the form of a helmet and gloves is required for this model.”

“The BRP snowmobile was purchased secondhand for 1 million 200 thousand rubles. The model is powerful and designed for active driving. Unfortunately, in my case, the steering let me down: sharp and nervous, leading to constant drifts. I'll try to reconfigure, maybe it's just a matter of habit. The seat for the rear passenger seems too slippery and uncomfortable; when maneuvering, a person will simply be thrown overboard. The windshield is optimal, but for some reason it impairs visibility and provides virtually no protection from the wind.”

Ski doo differs from its predecessors in one key feature - the improved lightweight and durable Rev-XU platform. The base is designed to make travel more comfortable on any road. Thanks to the platform, the equipment has ideal geometry and low weight. The BRP Ski-Doo is equipped with a multi-function instrument panel with an LCD monitor. The driver has access to all important indicators in real time.

BRP Ski-Doo mountain snowmobiles:

Lynx Xtrim Commander 800 E-Tec Traveler Touratech

The last among the snowmobiles under consideration is purely utilitarian. A powerful engine, large track, reinforced running boards - an ideal model for those who need a durable machine that can pull a heavy load. From a purely external perspective, it also gives the impression of impressive technology. The exact parameters of this handsome man are as follows:

  • two-stroke engine with 170 horsepower;
  • caterpillar dimensions: length 3.9 meters, width – 0.5 meters;
  • front suspension – A-LFS;
  • rear – PPS-5900-A.

This heavyweight will serve well for anyone who needs a “draft horse.” Powerful and easy to handle on almost any trail - a great buy.

Let's sum it up

2016 turned out to be rich in a wide variety of snowmobile models from the manufacturers Ski-Doo and Lynx, but it is worth noting that this article discusses only the most common of them. In any case, we can safely say that any buyer will be able to find equipment that suits his needs.

Wild cats on ice

In the 2013 line, the SKI-DOO EXPEDITION SE 1200 4-TEC has the best specific power (2.4 kg of weight per 1 hp versus 2.7 kg for other snowmen.
Murmansk during our meeting was gloomy and rainy, but I philosophically did not attach any importance to this: everything in our life is impermanent, everything changes, and in the end we should only be happy about it.

Ahead of me was a most pleasant acquaintance with the new snowmobile equipment in the 2013 BRP model range. The official Rosan dealer, arranging a test drive of snowmobiles, promised a lot of interesting and noteworthy things from the “don’t miss it, otherwise you will regret it” category.

So, we're on the track. And here they are, beginner snowmobiles. Four swift, beautiful snowfields crouched to the ground on wide skis. What a long-awaited meeting - hello!

LYNX 69 YETI 600 ARMY E-TEC SWT

Snowmobiles of this model are in service in a number of Scandinavian countries, which speaks for itself. Their advantage is a 61 cm wide track with steel spikes located on it, which help the snowmobile move on ice. A comparison with a cat immediately arises, and then my English lessons come to mind: oh yes!.. Lynx is a lynx!

In general, this is a typical “battle cat”, with a powerful two-stroke engine (115 hp), with a spiked-clawed and wide gooseneck, PPS rear suspension and telescopic front suspension. Plus Blade skis have a special design, in which the racks are not attached to the centers of the skis, but are shifted to the longitudinal axis of the machine. At the same time, along their entire length, an edge at least an inch high is stamped on the underside of the ski. Skis can be easily swapped even in the field.

At the same time, the location of the edge also changes. When it is outside, it makes it easier to move in deep snow, when inside it is in mountainous terrain with steep slopes and endless ups and downs, where better handling is needed. These skis will perform especially well when traversing mountain slopes.

The design of the front suspension is made in such a way that it does not become clogged with snow and does not cling to the branches of bushes, trees and their roots. In a word, this snowmobile is convincing proof that in all respects it is an ideal winter vehicle not only for army special forces of the Finns or Swedes, but also for peaceful hunters, fishermen and simply those who like to make their own paths through forests, mountains and plains, somewhere ice, then crust, then freshly fallen “powder” or simply deep snow cover or the absence of it at all.

Having been on spring bear hunts a couple of times in the northeast of the country, where simple movement across the terrain is impossible without such equipment, I sadly remembered our suffering in the mountains on less, let’s say, prepared snowmobile equipment and allowed myself to dream about the time when my friends will have the opportunity to test these wonderful devices in action, storming the hills and passes of the mountain ranges of Kamchatka and the Magadan region.

It is well known that almost all cats do not like water, although they can swim. But our “cat” loves this business, although snowmobiles, by definition, are not intended for water. During the test, we moved along the frozen surface of the lake, dusted with snow. And suddenly, at low speed, my snowmobile began to fall through the ice - I fell into a ravine, which I simply did not notice in the heat of excitement that gripped me. The natural reaction was to press the gas trigger as hard as possible.

The engine roared, the snowmobile jerked forward, stood on its “heel”, so that the front skis froze in the air, and then went and swam forward, breaking and pushing through the spring ice in front of it, until it completely went on planing. Having advanced about a hundred meters and feeling solid ground beneath me - everything was happening not far from the shore - I looked back. Along the entire length of the trail there was a slush of wet snow, and under it, as the instructor later said, the depth was one and a half meters.

Already in the name of the model you can feel the spirit of the mountains. The safety cage seems to encourage the driver: give in, don’t be afraid, you won’t roll over. An ideal device for hunting wolves in the steppes of Russia, Kazakhstan and the high mountain plateaus of the Pamirs.

The ability of the snowmobile to “swim” really surprised me - before that I had only seen this in commercials. Later, on other models, I repeated this experiment more than once, after which I returned to base, satisfied, but wet. I admit that swimming in winter and long driving afterwards will seem like a pleasant experience to few people, so I don’t advise anyone to do such tricks, especially since snowmobiles are not intended for “walking on water”, as well as on ice - tea, not jet skis.

After the Murmansk trip, I returned home with the conviction that this device combines traditional reliability, quality and the wayward character of a wild, but perfectly trainable (i.e., perfectly controllable) animal. The main conclusion is that the owner of this snowmobile will feel confident and calm on it, as if in the company of a faithful and reliable friend, ready to share with him all the adventures, sorrows and joys. In a word, I would only go into reconnaissance with this one.

SKI-DOO EXPEDITION SE 1200 4-TEC

This is a comfortable utilitarian with a good taste of a tourist snowmobile, combining convenience, maneuverability and functionality. In the SE configuration, the snowmobile is equipped with a rear air shock absorber, which allows you to adjust the position of the snowmobile taking into account its load, the weight of the driver and passenger. Air is pumped into the air suspension using a compressor. Front suspension travel is 21 cm, rear suspension travel is 34 cm; The front one is equipped with shock absorbers with double wishbones. 51 cm wide track with powerful lugs, four-stroke engine with a displacement of 1200 cm3 and a power of 130 hp. allow the driver, without hesitation, to storm both steep slopes and deep snowdrifts.

A modular seat, the passenger part of which is equipped with a backrest and heated handles, a steering wheel with four-level tilt adjustment, heated hands and throttle trigger, a high windshield, suspension, Pilot 6.9 skis - all these are pure advantages that make this model attractive to the consumer, and most importantly, it lives up to its name - Expedition.

The EXPEDITION SE 1200 4-TEC model has a Scandinavian twin brother with similar characteristics. Its name is LYNX ADVENTURE GT 1200 4-TEC. The only major difference is in the design of the rear suspension.

LYNX ALPINE SWT 1200 4-TEC

And here is the latest new product - the LYNX ALPINE SWT 1200 4-TEC snowmobile - a real workhorse, somewhat different from the “characters” described in the article. It has a powerful engine (130 hp), a wide track (61 cm), just like the LYNX YETI 69 ARMY, reinforced with studs. However, it, the only one of the presented models, has a rear suspension equipped with two shock absorbers with springs located almost horizontally.

This helps a lot when driving in wet snow; I think snowmobile owners who have encountered the problem of snow sticking to suspension elements will understand me.

The four-stroke engine means you don’t have to worry about whether its power reserve is enough to tow loaded sleds or overcome difficult places. When moving in a straight line, when you sharply press the gas trigger, completely different sensations arise. It seems that you are riding an unbroken stallion who is trying to get rid of you and makes a rapid leap forward, so that the steering wheel is torn out of your hands and the front skis easily come off the ground.

Like any all-terrain tractor, the ALPINE SWT 12000 captivates with its power, sense of permissiveness and cross-country ability and at the same time gives a feeling of comfort and safety.

SKI-DOO SCANDIC WT 550 F

Last year's SKI-DOO SCANDIC WT 550 F, equipped with a two-stroke engine and a 51 cm wide track, also took part in the Murmansk test for comparison. In terms of price, this is the most affordable and best-selling model in the BRP line. Despite the fact that two-stroke engines are noisier, less environmentally friendly and more expensive to operate - oil consumption alone (and gasoline too) is more than enough for several four-stroke engines - they are in steady demand.

All these shortcomings are compensated by the good “character” of the model: unpretentiousness and ease of operation, which often becomes decisive when choosing a snowmobile. Especially if we are not talking about the Central Federal District, but about Siberia or the Far East.

Yes, two-stroke engines are gradually losing ground, but this does not mean that they will no longer be used somewhere in the periphery by fishermen, hunters, fishermen, and tourists. There will always be lovers and connoisseurs of simplicity and reliability, especially where this is sometimes the only equipment that can be used to get from point A to point B during the long winter season.

And if, having entered into a legislative frenzy, the Duma suddenly does not become concerned with the problem of environmental pollution in the vast expanses of the country and does not pass a law banning the use of two-stroke engines, then we are guaranteed a long and happy life for them.

Suspension

The proprietary design with Montion Control shock absorbers is able to overcome difficult obstacles in the form of deep snow, under which solid objects can be hidden. Air springs are installed at the rear of the system, which provide an aerodynamic effect.

The skido heavy snowmobile 1200 produces the best off-road performance, even when compared with analogues. The chassis installed here will make movement comfortable on any surface.

  • Front suspension – RAS 2;
  • Motion Control front shock absorbers;
  • Suspension travel – 21.0 cm;
  • Rear suspension – SC-5U;
  • Suspension shock absorbers – Montion Control ACS;
  • Suspension travel – 34 cm.

What is the fuel consumption

The fuel and oil consumption of the Brp 1200 Expedition snowmobile is unimportant except for racers and extreme sports enthusiasts. This indicator is of interest to ordinary users of equipment, especially those who use a snowmobile in everyday activities. Even in this field, the unit differs from a car that moves on asphalt. Information on consumption is relative, therefore it is not officially declared by manufacturers.

Power consumption is related to the technical condition and characteristics of the environment:

  • on compacted snow there will be a small flow rate;
  • enlarged along the loose base.

The highest consumption will be observed in heavy snow.

An important component for consumption is the load; with good equipment it will be maximum. The load adjustment is quite wide; you can reduce consumption:

  • timely transmission switching;
  • exception of overload;
  • smooth acceleration;
  • adjusting the carburetor system.

Interesting! Experienced users travel long distances on empty tanks.

Transmission

The steering of the snowmobile is attractive, and the ergonomics are especially well designed. For example, the arrangement of levers and switches is very comfortable. Even during extreme driving, there is no need to reach for them; everything is at the driver’s fingertips.

The steering mechanisms are closely linked to the driving position; the parts can be changed into four positions even in the basic configuration. Professional users can change the position from sitting to standing and vice versa while riding.

  • Main variable speed pulley – e Drive 2;
  • Secondary variable speed pulley C, fast QRS response;
  • Mechanical reversible system;
  • Hydraulic brakes, stainless steel reinforced hoses.

Video

So, in the front part there is a proprietary RAS 2 suspension with Motion Control shock absorbers, which have a stroke of 210 mm. This is enough to overcome difficult obstacles in deep snow, under which large rocks and other obstacles may be hidden. As for the rear suspension, it is represented by the SC -5U chassis with the same Motion Control ACS shock absorbers as in the front. Thanks to air springs, a high aerodynamic effect is achieved, due to which the rear suspension travel was increased to 340 mm. This is a good indicator compared to analogues, and has a beneficial effect on the off-road features of the snowmobile. The owners of this car do not have to worry about breakdowns in the suspension, and have the opportunity to move comfortably on any road, because such a chassis smoothes out absolutely any unevenness that is encountered on a long journey. As for the steering, the developers paid special attention to it. So, in this case, the designers improved the ergonomics and positioned the levers and switches in such a way that you don’t need to reach for them, and so that there is no feeling of discomfort during extreme driving. To do this, we had to pay attention to the design of the entire workspace, and this includes not only the steering, but also the driving position and other features. The steering mechanism has four height adjustment positions - thanks to this, it is possible to move in a sitting or standing position, which is very important for professional users. The steering wheel can be finished and painted in any color depending on the consumer's preferences. Coming to the seat, it has a two-seater layout with the option of a rear passenger. But if necessary, the seat can be made into a single seat - in this case, the rear seat is removed, and instead there is space for additional cargo. In addition, another trunk is provided under the driver's seat. It is well sealed and protected from moisture and corrosion. You can store various items in it, such as food, spare parts, refill canister, and fishing and hunting accessories.

Ski-Doo Renegade X800

First, I would like to consider an interesting option from one of the most innovative manufacturers. This is a very powerful crossover that can easily take on even the most rough and difficult roads. At the same time, it goes surprisingly smoothly, which will undoubtedly please all those who have to climb or descend bumpy roads. It handles confidently on loose snow. Thanks to the adjustable skis, you can adjust it to specific situations: with a wide fit, it handles great on “smooth” slopes, and with a narrow fit, it handles slopes or deep snow. Its technical parameters are as follows:

  • two-cylinder engine with a volume of 800 cubic meters;
  • Brembo stainless steel brake system;
  • RAS 2 front suspension with 241 mm travel;
  • rMotion rear suspension with 406 mm of travel;
  • weight 218 kilograms;
  • electric starter and heated grips.

The X 800 E-Tec is a good option for challenging trails and is worth a look

Test Drive

During our test drive, we were able to see first-hand that the 2016 4-TEC's low- and mid-range performance has improved significantly. This happened due to the fact that the designers of Ski-Doo and Rotax equipped the 1200 with an Intelligent Throttle Control system, which provides three engine operating modes. This system was originally used on the 600/900 ACE engines, but had to be modified for the 1200 4-TEC engine. In the process, the restored 1200 received an improved intake system and a completely updated electronics package, including an electric throttle valve.

We've never been fans of the fancy computerized three-mode engine system. The idea is clear, and the system itself works simply and effectively, but is it really necessary? Surely, lovers of new technologies will like it, and in general, such a device is much better than setting up a carburetor system. You have three engine operating modes at your disposal: Standard, Sport and Economy. A dashboard-mounted switch allows you to make selections on the fly.

If you want to argue with your friends whose snowmobile can go the longest without refueling, then feel free to turn on the Eco mode. It significantly limits the snowmobile's power and helps reduce fuel consumption. Standard mode is the basic mode and is responsible for smooth, consistent engine operation. Sport mode revs up the engine to its maximum in every sense. Some of our test drivers always choose this mode, but we periodically switch to standard. Wouldn't it be great if the manufacturer compromised and just made two modes: the economical ECO and something between the overly sharp Sport and standard mode?

Of course, we asked Yamaha the same question, because their latest Vector models also have several operating modes. Interestingly, both Yamaha and Ski-Doo have come to the same decision for the upcoming model year. Maybe they had spies?

While computer programming is a key feature of the 1200 4-TEC, much of this is made possible by the installation of a lighter, more compact muffler. Presumably none of these improvements add up to more power, but the redesigned 1200 nonetheless feels quicker and more responsive.

By narrowing the engine, Ski-Doo engineers were able to fit the drivetrain within the REV-XR platform and narrower body. The former 1200 4-TEC engine was used on the now outdated REV-XR platform, which was one of three variants of the REV-X chassis.

From the original REV chassis, Ski-Doo was able to create a modular frame that resulted in three chassis options. The first variant was introduced in 2008 and it was the REV-XP chassis, it was 37% stronger than the old REV chassis. Two other variants, versions REV-XR and REV-XU, appeared in 2009. The XR chassis had a different engine bay to accommodate the wider 1200 4-TEC three-cylinder engine. The tunnel portion of the XU chassis was designed to accommodate a 20-inch wide utilitarian track.

At the presentation of the new chassis, Ski-Doo representatives noted: “The beauty of the new system is that the fast-paced MX Z, the luxurious touring GTX, and the utilitarian touring Expedition combine all the main advantages of the REV-X: incredibly light weight, versatile driving fit, balanced weight distribution and improved performance."

New for the 2016 model year, we see the MXZ TNT 1200 4-TEC now shares the same platform design and narrow body as the two-stroke TNT models. In terms of appearance, the new 1200 4-TEC looks narrower and sportier. But looks can be deceiving: the 1200 TNT weighs 229 kilograms, which is about 23 kilograms heavier than the 600 E-TEC. We could cling to this fact, but in reality it is not noticeable at all, because the 4-TEC has 10-15 more horsepower, and the increased torque makes up for the difference. Plus, the E-TEC gets good fuel economy, but it doesn't compare to the 8.5 liters per kilometer that the 4-TEC boasts.

Overall, the 2016 MXZ TNT 1200 4-TEC deserves praise. It is much sportier than previous versions. The REV-XS body allows you to corner faster and faster, taking full advantage of the grippy RAS2 front suspension and smooth rMotion rear design. Both the rear and front suspensions are equipped with repairable aluminum HPG Plus shock absorbers. They also cleverly combine the qualities of a sports model with comfort. The 120-inch Ripsaw track provides reliable traction for quick acceleration and cornering control. If long journeys are your forte, then the 40-liter gas tank and 8-liter per kilometer consumption will come in handy, as they will allow you to travel more than 300 kilometers without stopping.

The 2016 Ski-Doo MXZ TNT 1200 4-TEC is a great buy because it features the latest technology, including a Learner Key feature that limits top speed for novice riders, and features the famous MXZ agility. A snowmobile can be aggressive and powerful if you want it, or calm if you don't want it. The rebuilt TNT 1200 four-stroke is a reliable, quiet, and fuel-efficient snowmobile that will provide many more seasons of enjoyment.
