How much oil should I add to gasoline for an IZH motorcycle?

home

Today I will tell you about the Izh Planet-3 motorcycle, produced in 1978. This motorcycle is designed to ride on different road surfaces. The power of this motorcycle is 22 hp. Maximum speed 120 km/h.

The motorcycle is equipped with a 4-speed gearbox. Air cooling and 6 volt equipment. The ignition system is contact-cam. fuel consumption per 100 km. 5-6 liters at a speed of 90 km/h. The weight of this motorcycle without side trailer is 165 kg.

The instrument panel of this motorcycle is made very simply. than on new models. There are two indicator lamps on the panel. Green - neutral sensor. Red—generator operating mode. There is also a green speedometer backlight. The motorcycle is not whimsical and can withstand grueling loads on the road. Carburetor K 62, mixture of gasoline and oil 1/25, for example, for 10 liters of gasoline 450 grams of engine or diesel oil. Most motorists use diesel oil, as it makes the fuel mixture ideal. An engine with this oil runs smoother.

But there is one nuisance for some motorcyclists associated with starting the engine on these series of motorcycles - the kickstarter kicks into the leg! This happens because the motorcycle has an early ignition, or the cylinder is overfilled with a combustible mixture. With proper ignition there should be virtually no kickback to the leg. But if recoil still remains, try using a decompressor when starting the engine when you have already pressed the kickstarter several times; it should remove excess fuel from the cylinder chamber of your motorcycle.

And then try to start the motorcycle engine again. Most motorcyclists are accustomed to this phenomenon and simply try to push the kickstarter of the motorcycle more sharply so that the recoil is not so strong, that is, the recoil remains the same, but the resistance of the leg makes it less. For more convenient engine starting, it is recommended to lower the kickstarter on the splines by at least 3-4 notches, to the factory setting. Overall a very good motorcycle that can be used for a variety of purposes.

Basic modification

Otherwise, Izh Planeta-3 was not much different from its two-cylinder brother. The technical characteristics of these machines were quite similar.

  • Engine – air-cooled, single-cylinder, two-stroke. With a working volume of 346 cubic meters. cm produced a power of 18 hp. With. and in this respect it was inferior to its two-cylinder counterpart.
  • A carburetor is used to create a combustible mixture. In early modifications this was the K36I, which later gave way to the K62I model. Fuel comes from the tank by gravity.
  • The clutch, like the Jupiter, is multi-disc, with an oil bath. Despite all the structural similarity, the parts of these units are not interchangeable. The Izh Planeta-3 motorcycle has a different motor sprocket. There is also a difference in the shutdown drive.
  • The gearbox, as well as the clutch, retained the design layout and number of steps. But at the same time, it differs in the switching device and gear ratios.

The remaining components did not have significant differences and can be considered interchangeable. In this form, the weight of the car reached 168 kg, and the maximum speed was 120 km/h. A version of the motorcycle with a sidecar was also produced, designated Izh Planeta-3K.

Final version

By 1981, specialists from the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant prepared a new package of modernizations.

  • After fiddling with the carburetor, we added 1 liter. With. power., achieving a figure of 21 hp. With.
  • A new fuel tank was installed, which was later transferred to the Izh Planet-4 model.
  • A rear wing of a new shape appeared. Due to the fact that the production of the part was not yet debugged, the new wing was not installed on all series of the car.

Well, and some other little things. In this form, the motorcycle became known as Izh Planeta-3 02. By 1985, when production of the modification was completed, 216,101 copies had been made.

You'll find some, you'll lose some.

The Third Planet, due to its lower motor power, was somewhat inferior to Jupiter in dynamics. Owner reviews indicate that this shortcoming was compensated for by better traction at low speeds. This gave certain advantages when driving over rough terrain.

But, despite the fact that the engine capacity of the Izh Planet-3 remained almost the same as that of the two-cylinder unit of the older model, fuel consumption increased significantly. At high speeds it reached 5 liters per 100 km. But the ignition adjustment has been simplified.

Izh Planeta-3 was produced from 1971 to 1977. During this time, 478,496 vehicles of this modification were manufactured. They had minor differences, such as the color of the seat upholstery materials and the side trims on the tank.

Review of Izh Planet 3

In the Soviet Union, the motorcycle was considered one of the best models, because it was not for nothing that 478,496 copies were produced for sale. The engineers could boast that they were the first in the USSR to create a motorcycle equipped with direction indicators. IL was used by people who just wanted to go for a ride or by those who wanted to transport cargo or go fishing or hunting. The tubular frame could withstand a high weight; the weight of Planet 3 was 168 kilograms. The maximum recommended load was 170 kg, but this is far from the limit.

For off-road driving, more or less comfortable conditions were provided by the telescopic front fork and spring suspension on the rear wheel.

The appearance of the Planet 3 motorcycle was quite famous, but engineers were able to improve it with new parts and their location. The wheel guards were new, the rims themselves were larger and had a radius of 18 inches, and the rear swingarm was significantly improved. Looking at the photo, many notice the presence of chrome parts. The appearance became better after removing the protective cover on the rear shock absorbers.

The dashboard on Planet 3 is simple; many people don’t even like it. They decided to place two lights on the panel, the first of which is green and indicates the neutral speed sensor. The second is red and shows the operation of the generator. Accordingly, there is a large speedometer. The speedometer backlight is made in a pleasant green color.

Over the course of several years of production, Izhevsk designers managed to create three modifications of this model - 01, 02 and Planet 3K. The latter differed only in the presence of a side stroller. Today this model is already considered old and ugly, but among Soviet technology it is one of the favorite “old ladies”. The most common motorcycle is in villages and countryside, where such equipment is useful to anyone.

Disadvantages and childhood diseases

The car is not without its drawbacks, for which many people do not like it. Most of them manifest themselves as a result of improper operation or overheating of the engine in difficult road conditions. The most annoying are the following disadvantages:

  • Rapid wear of parts of the cylinder-piston group and crankshafts.
  • Low resource of chain drive parts.
  • Uneven operation of the cylinders.
  • Poor quality connectors of electrical equipment wires.
  • Imperfect, archaic design of attaching the saddle to the frame.

Wear of the main engine parts causes the most problems for motorcycle owners. Even correct and careful operation is accompanied by early wear of pistons, cylinders, and crankshaft parts. With a new engine, after running 15-20 thousand km, extraneous metallic sounds appear, which intensify over time. They can be caused by one or more reasons:

  1. Wear of the connecting rod upper head bushing.
  2. Cylinder wear.
  3. Wear of the piston skirt.
  4. The lock falls out of the piston ring groove and is broken.
  5. Destruction of the connecting rod needle bearing on the crankshaft.

These defects can only be eliminated by replacing parts of the next repair size, boring the cylinders and bushings. All of this work, except for replacing the crankshafts, can be performed without removing the engine.

Poor quality chains or inattention to the condition of the rubber covers lead to rapid wear of the drive. At the same time, the drive sprocket wears out just as quickly and must be replaced along with the chain. The rear gear lasts longer and can survive 3 or even 4 chains.

It’s rare that an engine is characterized by perfect uniformity of cylinder operation. The primitive mechanism for adjusting the distribution of fuel mixture flows across the cylinders does not allow precise adjustment of the supply. As a result, each cylinder produces its own torque. Although the difference is not great, the load on the crank system is not uniform and balanced. As a result, it works with a skew in the values of the force vectors; the more loaded crankshaft quickly fails. The presence of unevenness can be easily detected by the color of candle soot. The color of the carbon deposits on the spark plugs should be the same; if there is a significant difference, then this primarily indicates uneven operation of the cylinders. It can be adjusted, but the regular process is poorly managed and laborious.

Electrical wiring is made with low quality wires and connectors. Cases of contact oxidation or wire breakage as a result of vibration of a loose connection are a widespread phenomenon.

The design of fastening the saddle to the frame has not changed since the appearance of the first IZhs of a similar arrangement in the early 60s. After a short period of use, the lock becomes loose due to vibration, and unpleasant play appears in the joints. Under the saddle there are connectors from the wires going to the optics of the rear flap and to the side trailer. Many owners, forgetting about this, simply tear the wires under the saddle when removing it. The rear wheel cannot be removed without removing the seat.

First changes

In 1977, the next version of the motorcycle went into production - Izh Planet 3 01. When creating this model, the developers followed the same path as when modifying the Izh Jupiter. The changes affected:

  • Front fender, height-adjustable above the wheel.
  • Rear shock absorbers, the design of which has been significantly improved, adding the ability to change the spring preload.
  • Power unit. Boosting the engine by increasing the compression ratio made it possible to increase power to 20 hp. With. But this required installing a spark plug with a different heat rating - A-23, increasing the area of the cooling fins and changing their shape.
  • The design of the steering wheel, on which rear-view mirrors appeared, and the ends of the control handles received protection for hands in case of a fall in the form of rubber balls.
  • Front brake that got a brake light frog.
  • Installed standard safety bars that protected the motorcyclist in an accident

The last motorcycle Izh Planeta-3 01 rolled off the assembly line in 1981. By this time, 400,845 copies of this modification had been produced.

Repair and tuning

The products of the Izhevsk plant have never been famous for their reliability. But there is also an advantage in this - being the first motorcycle for a novice biker, some “Izhak” acted as a “learning desk”, helping to learn not only driving, but also independent maintenance and repair.

Spare parts

Finding them is not difficult, because at one time the Izhevsk plant riveted a fair number of motorcycles. The prices are low, but in some cases it is cheaper and easier to buy a “donor”, from which you can remove everything you need as needed.

Tuning

It is not easy to somehow modify a Soviet bike. Typically, owners reduce all changes made to visual tuning. Sometimes the carburetor is replaced with a Japanese or Chinese one - this relatively inexpensive operation helps avoid many potential problems.
