Legend of the past
The first Katana created a real sensation and entered the market as one of the fastest motorcycles in the world. Its design is considered revolutionary for its time. It was the result of a collaboration between Japanese manufacturer Suzuki and the team of Hans Muth, who was previously head of BMW design. From his suggestion, the Suzuki GSX1100S Katana appeared - a sports tourer with a body kit. The motorcycle has a philosophy and appearance inspired by the spirit of the traditional Japanese samurai sword. This is reflected by the silver coloring and the chopped lines of the fairing, symbolizing the tip of the blade.
The range per refueling is only 130 km!
The passenger will have nothing to complain about. Although he will have to pull up his knees a lot because the footrests are screwed down tightly, the wide sofa is so comfortable that distances well beyond the distance from the house to the pub will not be a problem. By the way: don't be surprised by the fairing. It is small and does not protect the head and shoulders from air pressure. It becomes a nuisance from 160 km/h.
The new Katana loses the agility of a sports car, but improves ride comfort.
The Katana's biggest drawback? It has a tank capacity of only 12 liters. That's 5 liters less than the GSX-S 1000 and 9 liters less than the '80s Katana. It is clear that new motorcycles are more economical, but this is too much. A fully fueled Katana will travel about 180 km. Want to go fast? At the gas station you will find that 8.6 liters of fuel flowed through each injector for every 100 km. This means a microscopic range – only 130 km!
A new “sword” in old traditions
The Katana was introduced in 1980 at the Cologne Motor Show. The manufacturer closes the time loop by making an obvious update of the original source according to the same principle. As in the 80s, an independent designer invited by Suzuki took up the work.
Italian specialist Rodolfo Frascoli, who is already known for the Griso Moto Guzzi, Norge and Stelvio, Triumph Speed Triple, as well as the Tiger 1050, has worked on the Suzuki GSX-S1000. Note that the base is again based on the Suzuki GSX-S1000! The project was developed jointly with engineer Alberto Strazzari.
The Suzuki GSX-S1000 motorcycle is praised and recognized as worthy of the basis of a new legend and is even considered an underrated bike. Indeed, the company is simultaneously repeating and rewriting the history of its favorite model.

Much in common
The new Katana uses a modified version of the 2005-2008 GSX-R1000 four-stroke liquid-cooled inline engine, making 999cc and nearly 150 horsepower. The long-stroke engine houses lightweight aluminum pistons and rings created using finite element analysis, making them rigid and resistant to external influences.
To ensure smooth and controlled engine response, the engine is equipped with a special throttle control mechanism.
The power unit is located slightly lower, which stabilizes the motorcycle in motion. The 4 into 2 into 1 exhaust system is made of stainless steel for less noise when gases are released from the engine. In the middle of the pipe is the Suzuki Exhaust Tuning valve, it controls flow into the catalytic converter and exhaust chamber to balance performance and emissions control.
The six-speed transmission has vertically stepped shafts, as in the sport versions, to reduce the overall length of the engine.

Everything new is well forgotten old
The modern Katana 2022 is more of a typical urban naked bike. The design of the motorcycle has become more... how can I put it better... compressed, concentrated, dense. The motorcycle has become visually smaller. Note that the handlebars are closer to the rider and higher in level, although the seat is designed for average heights to accommodate more users.
The gas tank has been redesigned, yes, it now allows a wider steering radius, but... I’ll tell you about the tank separately, this is the only fly in the ointment in this story.
Due to the overall aggressive design and short tail, the bike really does seem small. It can also accommodate a passenger. By the way, the motorcycle even had its angular fairing with a pointed shape and a square headlight returned in the image and likeness of the first one.
The aluminum frame is lightweight, the swingarm is also aluminum and cast. We add here the adjustable KYB suspension - 43 mm inverted telescopic forks and an adjustable monoshock absorber at the rear.
Braking power comes from a set of 310mm dual discs paired with two four-piston Brembo calipers at the front, while the rear brake is a single-piston Nissin caliper.
The bike rides on lightweight six-spoke TRP cast aluminum wheels and Dunlop Sportmax Roadsmart 2 tubeless tires, created specifically for the 2022 Katana. Sounds tempting, right?
So, what about electrical? The motorcycle has three-level traction control and the ability to turn off the control altogether in order to shift the responsibility onto yourself entirely. In addition, there is a digital instrument panel and LED optics. The bike is equipped with a Bosch ABS system.
How the Suzuki Katana was tempered
1980 Suzuki is fighting with other Japanese tycoons for the top spot. Suzuki has an ace up its sleeve with the GSX 1100. 16 valves, DOHC timing and over 100 hp squeezed out of a liter engine - that's impressive! There is a small problem though. This bike doesn't look cool! The flagship model should stand out, have a sporty character, and demonstrate the company's technical progress. In this situation, the group and the European headquarters commission a project from the then unknown German studio Target Design. Hans-Georg Kasten, Hans Muth (former BMW designer) and Jan Olof Fellström work there.
They begin work in April 1980 and present a prototype three months later. Thus was born the legend - Suzuki Katana. Ironically, the name was not coined in Japan, but in Germany. The presentation of the project to the head of Osam Suzuki causes fear in the team. However, the president briefly replies: “I like it. Reminds me of Concorde. Hooray! " The futuristic prototype goes into production with minor changes. Today, the first Katanas are extremely rare and insanely expensive.
By the way: despite his age, Osama Suzuki (born in 1930) still holds the helm of his company.

It is logical that the silver color of the fairing symbolizes the shine of the polished blade. Two more designer models were created for the consumer market - black and red. Personally, I like the traditional silver one. On the tank we see the Katana symbols. Users have access to all sorts of designer features - a tinted windshield, a colored seat, red Brembo calipers, a carbon front fender and other carbon covers, as well as many options for decals.
Advantages and disadvantages
Since the motorcycle was designed as a budget option, it did not receive any special distinctive features. In addition, representatives noted that they were afraid to change the model too much, since either the price would increase or the bike would not be able to be considered a “universal soldier.”
In general, the motorcycle can be called friendly, but still requires certain driving skills.
But at the same time, users noted:
- efficiency and large tank volume;
- consumables are not a problem;
- but large parts have to be ordered from Japan;
- problems with standing on the side stand - you can fall off it even from a sideways glance, but if you slightly reduce its length (an angle grinder helps), the problem is solved;
- prone to wobbling , so letting go of the steering wheel, even temporarily, is highly not recommended;
- Excellent maneuverability - even with a passenger you can make a turn under the knee.
As those who have had time to sit say, it’s a good and balanced bike for long trips , and not for layovers.
A spoon of tar
Let's go back to the gas tank. Despite all the positive image of a motorcycle, which, despite its characteristics, handles well, is nimble and obedient, the whole thing is well done... manufacturers fought for its weight and shape, and in the end they received 215 kilograms of steel fury, sacrificing the volume of the tank. I don’t know how to say it, the tank is only 12 liters! 12! In the vast expanses of Russia - 12 liters, this is not serious.
The manufacturer urges you not to be alarmed and look at fuel consumption - an average of 5.3 liters per 100 kilometers. On the other hand, for a typical urban resident of a metropolis who does not want to travel to long distances, it is enough.
If we talk about the price, according to the latest data it ranges from 13,500 to 14,700 dollars, which in terms of our wooden ones is a million rubles, plus or minus a couple of hundred thousand.
Modifications
The developers did not get carried away with modifications of the model; they limited themselves to the fact that after the change of generation, the dimensions of the motorcycle changed in all respects.

The model did not arouse interest among competitors either. The first to introduce an equivalent replacement was Kawasaki, offering its GPX 600 .

Katana by Icon
This motorcycle, created by the Icon team, became famous as a bike in 30 days. In reality the story went like this:
Suzuki invited the Icon team to upgrade their new Katana. Typically, the Icon team takes bikes and spends 12 to 18 months on a total upgrade to deliver something unique in their style. But they were given only... 30 days! And this is what came of it.
As a result, the Icon team completely revised the suspension (which it always does), made an additional hole in the gas tank, worked some magic on the exhaust and naturally produced an original appearance with retro references.
As you can see, such a young, but already quite sensational Suzuki Katana 2022 has become an interesting project, on which quite a few specialists have worked. The motorcycle looks interesting, has decent features and will be good for the urban jungle.

The “Katana” line belonged to “sport tourers” and included motorcycles with engines of 400, 600, 750 and 1100 cc. cm.
The most popular of all these bikes was the 600 cc version, but the “long-lived” is the 750 cc motorcycle, which was produced until 2008.
In fact, the first “Katanas” were “road bikes” equipped with plastic sports body kits, which led to them being classified into two classes of motorcycles at once.
But this did not initially apply to the 400 cc version, the first models of which were ordinary “road cars”.
Only with its appearance after the first modernization, which took place in 1983, did this motorcycle become similar in appearance to the rest of the Katanas.
Until the 90s, these motorcycles had a classic road layout, with an open engine, a high tank and a straight seat.
An angular fairing with a small glass was installed in the front of the motorcycle.
But since the beginning of the 90s, the appearance has been revised. They began to look more like sports bikes.
The power plant of these models was already completely covered by fairings, the seat, together with the rear wing, was already located at an angle and had a stepped shape. The angular shapes in the appearance of bikes have disappeared.
Facing
A lot of work has been done with the plastic body kits. Their location determined how the motorcycle would look from a design point of view.
The entire front part of the plastic cladding was made in the form of a complex technological profile, which housed dual headlights, turn signals and a windshield. The lower part of the body kit covered the top of the engine and continued to the seat. The gas tank remained uncovered.
Body kit number two completely covered the entire lower part of the engine and partially the rear fork. And finally, a third plastic body kit masked the frame and exhaust pipe.

- the fruit of the rivalry between Japanese motorcycle manufacturers in the mega-popular class of 600 cc sportbikes. About a decade and a half ago, the Katana 600 motorcycle, also known as the Suzuki GSX 600 F, entered the arena as a fighter from Suzuki. But “Katana,” you see, sounds more interesting, and usually the owners of this model call their motorcycles that way. This strong mid-ranger has some undoubted advantages, which has ensured its good popularity and a well-deserved reputation as a reliable “riding” motorcycle.
Equipped with an in-line “four” air-oil cooling, the Suzuki Katana 600 does not belong to the category of “hyperbikes” and does not impress with its technical characteristics. However, this is a very balanced motorcycle, pleasant to drive, albeit with its own characteristics. Sharing roots with Suzuki's famous GSX-R line of motorcycles, the Katana 600 takes on the best features of a jixer, such as endurance and overall quality.
The Katana engine, which has four valves per cylinder, is capable of producing 80 horsepower and 55 nm of torque. Not so much for a sports tourist, but not little either - the figure is, let’s say, average. But the impeccably well-functioning 6-speed transmission makes its considerable contribution, providing the motorcycle with powerful and smooth acceleration. The Suzuki Katana 600 picks up speed smoothly, delighting the motorcyclist sitting on it, and does not try to jump out from under its rider if he suddenly opens the gas a little sharply.
The dry weight of the motorcycle is almost 180 kg, which is not so little for a 600 cc sportbike, although, however, its cubic classmates from the Kawasaki ZZR line of motorcycles weigh about the same. This is not to say that the Katana is very easy to control; active maneuvering requires some effort, which is especially noticeable when it is necessary to fit into a long turn at high speed. But we can safely say that the Suzuki Katana 600 steers quite predictably and predictably, as well as brakes, however. Three brake discs are responsible for braking, and they do their job well.
The advantages of the motorcycle also include the comfort that it can hit. The seat of the Suzuki Katana 600, which seems rigid at first glance, turns out to be surprisingly comfortable, once you sit down on it, and, according to reviews from the owners, the motorcyclist’s seat is not subjected to severe tests even with many hundreds of kilometers of daily mileage. At high speeds, you can lie down on the gas tank to shield yourself from headwinds, since the Katana GSX600F's old-fashioned fairing copes well with headwinds.
This bike can be called friendly, but it still requires certain skills. Not the most modern in its design, the Suzuki Katana 600 requires some driving skills to get used to its features like its imposing cornering. At the same time, smooth acceleration and moderately tenacious brakes really forgive some mistakes typical of novice motorcyclists. This is the paradox. But the bike is really good.
