Ural electric
Based on materials from MOTO magazine:
The eye does not immediately notice the trick. At first glance (and at the second, third, too), there is nothing unusual in the Ural standing by the side of the road. However, as often happens, it all depends on the angle of view.
Stop! Where are the cylinders? “Opposite” is precisely “opposite” because, like a spy, it is given away by the “boilers” sticking out to the side. And here... Absolutely nothing! And the sound... No clicking valves, no gurgling sobs of release, no groaning of the box. Only the barely audible trolleybus buzz of an electric motor and the slap of tires rolling on the asphalt. Well... Well, hello, the future of the Urals is without internal combustion engines.
The fact that the Irbit Motor Plant is preparing an electric version of its single-wheel drive sidecar cT became clear this spring, when on the streets of one of the suburbs of Seattle we accidentally noticed an unusual Ural with an electric motor in place of the gearbox and a thick wiring harness running somewhere under the side trailer. The image was replicated by almost all specialized media, and the top officials of the IMZ limited themselves to the standard excuse: “No comment.” But in the fall they suddenly decided to talk about the experimental machine themselves.
The motorcycle is powered by a Zero electric motor with a power of 45 kW (60 hp) and a thrust of 110 Nm
Yes, this is a prototype called "Ural" Electric. Or rather, a running model, which, at the request of the American office of Irbitsk residents, was created by the California-based ICG company solely for the purpose of testing technical solutions. Not alone, of course, but in collaboration with the famous Zero Motorcycles, which shared a 45-kilowatt electric motor, a controller, a dashboard, a set of batteries with a total capacity of 19.5 kWh and some other components.
Under the pseudo-tank lid there is not a filler neck, but a socket for charging the battery
According to the developers, the greatest difficulty was the placement of batteries so as not to destroy one of the most important qualities of a motorcycle with a side trailer - the ability to transport cargo. Therefore, one part of the batteries was traditionally placed in the frame, and the other - under the floor of the “cradle”, which made it possible not only to preserve the passenger seat and trunk, but also to significantly lower the center of gravity, thus adding stability to the three-wheeled structure. And this is by no means superfluous, because the supply of batteries increased the weight of the Ural cT from 317 kg to 373 kg.
The total battery capacity is 19.5 kWh. Moreover, one part of them (7.2 kWh) is traditionally placed in the frame...
Was the game worth the trouble? The head of the company, Ilya Khait, does not hide that the experiment is interesting even in itself: “The motorcycle has neither a clutch nor a gear lever, which means that in order to control it, all you need to do is turn the gas. And with a thrust of 110 Nm, it is really fast! For the Ural, of course... The maximum speed is 140 km/h, although we recommend sticking to 105 km/h. Plus it’s still versatile—almost like a car.”
...and the other is under the floor of the side trailer. A full charge lasts for 165 km
Almost. After all, the declared power reserve is only 165 km, and the charging time to 95% is as much as 13 hours! You won't go far.
Not only the electric motor and controller are borrowed from Zero motorcycles, but also, say, the dashboard
However, we repeat, the electric Ural is just an experiment, a mobile laboratory. Including for reconnaissance of the sentiments of loyal customers, for whom, if there is a keen interest on their part, it will be possible to launch a similar three-wheeled electric unit into production within 24 months. And not instead of, but together with traditional models.
Hydraulic winches
The advantages are a long service life, stopping during overload, constant powerful traction and the ability to work continuously for a long time. Disadvantages: complicated installation, high price, inability to work with the engine turned off.

Motorcycle IMZ URAL Electric Sidecar Prototype 2022 review
Irbit Motorcycle Plant has completed the first stage of creating an all-electric motorcycle with sidecar. The electric prototype was built on the existing all-wheel drive chassis of the URAL cT model using Zero Motorcycles (motor, batteries, controller and other components). California-based ICG developed the overall design and was responsible for manufacturing the initial prototype. Zero Motorcycles also provided the necessary technical support during the development and testing of the prototype, making this project possible.
At first glance it is still a Ural, but the electric bike offers a completely new experience and sensation. We (IMZ) have always known that our sidecar is the ideal platform for an electric motorcycle build because it can offer what conventional two-wheelers do not: comfort, stability and passenger safety, not to mention more space for batteries. The Ural electric motorcycle is very easy to ride thanks to its low center of gravity and optimal weight distribution. It doesn't have a clutch or shifter, twisting the throttle is pretty much all you need to control the bike. And it accelerates very quickly - for a Ural... Overall it's a fun and very versatile vehicle that you can use almost like a car. The motorcycle was intensively tested in real conditions - in rain and snow, on cold and hot days, on highways and city streets.
“You'll feel like you're in stealth mode, silently sneaking up on cars idling at traffic lights. And when talking with a passenger there will be no screaming engine. The Electric Sidecar Prototype's sound is a slight hum compared to the vibrations and tractor-like grunt of the legendary fuel-powered Ural motorcycle engines." - Quote from Good Spark Garage
Proof of concept for the Electric Motorcycle was the main goal of this project. We went through several iterations to find the optimal powertrain kit configuration. One of the main challenges was to find the optimal location for the batteries, while maintaining the passenger comfort, capacity and stability characteristic of Ural strollers. We have collected a lot of data to use in the next phase of the project
Currently, the Irbit Motorcycle Plant has no plans to produce an all-electric model. Ultimately, the decision will be based on market research, consumer feedback and industry experts. It is estimated that it will take approximately 24 months for the project to be finalized and ready for mass production. The production design of the electric motorcycle will include the latest battery technology and charging options.
The Electric Ural was unveiled at the Long Beach Progressive Motorcycle Show November 16-18, 2022. Ural Motorcycles is currently organizing demonstration events. At the time of writing in 2022, publications such as Forbes, Ride Apart, Good Spark Garage, RevZilla, etc. took this model for testing and described their impressions...
