ATVs are convenient due to their compactness and all-terrain ability. The more powerful the all-terrain vehicle engine, the higher the speed the vehicle can develop when moving in a straight line. In marshy areas or sand, increased power will improve performance and you will be able to slowly pass where others will get stuck. Our experts looked into which ATVs are the most powerful and fastest ones sold in the Russian Federation.
Features of the ATV
An ATV is a four-wheeled type of motor vehicle designed for driving on dirt roads and off-road. It is especially popular with hunters, fishermen and farmers. This all-terrain vehicle is distinguished by increased maneuverability, maneuverability, ease of operation, low fuel consumption and a compact size that facilitates its storage.
ATV is a four-wheeled type of motor vehicle.
Depending on the level of equipment, ATVs are able to overcome a variety of obstacles (slides, mud, streams, wetlands). They travel on ATVs even in conditions of almost complete absence of roads. Additionally, a trailer can be attached to them and used as a traction vehicle.
When driving an ATV on roads, you must follow the established traffic rules. You should also remember that you can operate an ATV with an internal combustion engine with a volume of more than 50 cm³ only if the rider has a vehicle registration and a driver’s license.
Specifications
Fuel consumption
The most economical option in terms of fuel consumption is an ATV with an engine capacity of up to 500 cubic centimeters.
On average, fuel consumption for a model with a 500-700 cc engine will be:
- on different surfaces (dirt and asphalt) - approximately 10 liters per 100 kilometers;
- when traveling on snowy roads, sandy surfaces or rough terrain - from 12 to 15 liters per 100 kilometers;
- when driving through wetlands or liquid mud - up to 20 liters per 100 kilometers.
Service
When buying an ATV, it is recommended to draw up an agreement for dealer service and inspection at a service station. However, if you wish, you can handle all-terrain vehicle maintenance on your own. This will give you the opportunity to save money and deal with the breakdown yourself somewhere far from civilization (for example, while hunting).
Load capacity
On average, the carrying capacity of an all-terrain vehicle is 250-300 kg and can reach up to 350 kilograms. Almost all modifications are compatible with trailers. When choosing a trailer, you need to pay attention to the same track of the trailer and the ATV. If this parameter greatly differs, there will be problems with cross-country ability.
Note! Trailers with lever-type suspension perform better on rough terrain when compared to single-axle models.
Optional equipment
The use of additional equipment will improve the capabilities of the all-terrain vehicle:
- underbody protection panels, control arms, windshields and glass;
- bumper made of metal tubes;
- winch;
- holders for accessories;
- trunk cases and hunting weapons.
To troubleshoot problems, you should always have with you:
- hand pump;
- repair kit for tubeless tires;
- a set of spare candles;
- a set of repair wrenches (socket and open-end wrenches);
- screwdrivers.
What category of license is required to drive an ATV?
According to the same Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 796 of June 12, 1999, to drive an ATV you need a license for a tractor driver of category “A I”.
What category of license is required to drive an ATV?
To obtain them, you must contact an organization such as Gostekhnadzor. In this case, the owner of the vehicle must provide a self-propelled vehicle passport (PSM). This document provides basic information about the ATV.
It is Gostekhnadzor that is responsible for registering vehicles with PSM, so even if the driver has a driver’s license issued by the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate, he will still have to register a license for an ATV at Gostekhnadzor. The only exception is ATVs with a vehicle title. In this case, the license issued by the State Traffic Inspectorate will also be valid.
By the way, the license to drive an ATV is also valid for this type of equipment such as a snowmobile.
Model overview
Let's look at several of the most popular ATV models on the Russian market.
Yamaha Grizzly 700 EPS
The engine uses a 700 cc unit with one cylinder, a liquid cooling system and a pair of overhead camshafts. A characteristic feature of the model, which has a cylinder diameter of 103 millimeters, is more than sufficient torque. However, the vibration of the engine is quite noticeable. The all-terrain vehicle is equipped with an electric starter and transistor electronic ignition. A three-mode Ultramatic automatic transmission is used.
Although the engine power has been increased in the latest modification, the engine now consumes less fuel. This was achieved thanks to ceramics - the cylinder mirror is covered with it.
Traditionally, Yamaha is characterized by excellent maneuverability and good cross-country ability, therefore it is in demand among hunters and fishermen. The Yamaha is capable of towing a 600-kilogram trailer and carrying up to 140 kilograms of cargo on 2 racks.
The ATV is equipped with electric power steering from Ackermann and disc brakes. They are available on all wheels; there is not only a transmission brake on the rear axle, as in many other all-terrain vehicles.
A special feature of this manufacturer is the prevalence of single-seat models in its lineup. It is for this reason that very high-quality motorcycles from Yamaha yield the palm in the Russian market to the Canadian Bombardier.
It should also be noted that there is no winch and tow bar included as standard. They need to be purchased separately.
Honda TRX680FA Rincon
The ATV from the Japanese manufacturer is equipped with an injection four-stroke engine with liquid cooling. Engine capacity is 675 cubic centimeters. The Honda TRX680FA Rincon is equipped with transistor ignition with electronic advance.
The model has an automatic transmission (with manual control). Thanks to this, ease of control is achieved.
The independent rear suspension is equipped with aluminum arms. Disc brakes, electric and manual starters are installed.
The TRX680FA model has a ground clearance of 254 millimeters and large wheels, which allows the all-terrain vehicle to be used for off-road driving. The weight of the ATV is 277 kilograms, which is not at all much for an all-terrain vehicle of this level.
The fuel system includes electronic injection and IACV control. The Honda gas tank holds 17 liters of fuel, which allows it to be used for trips to remote areas.
Russian mechanics RM 500 4X4
The representative of the Russian motorcycle industry is the Russian Mechanics ATV with the RM 500 model. This is the first Russian all-terrain vehicle, the production of which began in 2011.
Russian Mechanics ATVs have a 500 cubic centimeter engine with a power of 41 horsepower, a 2x2 drive and 26-inch wheels with alloy discs. The gas tank holds 25 liters of fuel. Such a reserve of gasoline allows you to travel up to 200 kilometers.
To ensure the stability of the RM-500, engineers lengthened the wheelbase. Thanks to this, the ATV has become safer at high speeds. The model has good cross-country ability, which provides high ground clearance (29 centimeters). The carrying capacity of the RM-500 (270 kilograms) allows the all-terrain vehicle to be used for transporting fairly heavy loads.
PM 650
Another ATV from Russian Mechanics is RM-650-2. It is a long-wheelbase modification of the PM-650. It has become longer than the standard version by 18 centimeters. This ATV differs from the 500th model by a more powerful engine - 650 cubic meters instead of 500.
The all-terrain vehicle is equipped with a double seat, and the seat is designed as a two-level seat, which improves visibility for the passenger.
“RM-650-2” has 2 luggage platforms: one for 40 kilograms, the second for 80. The basic kit includes an electric winch, alloy wheels, rear-view mirrors, arch extensions, lighting devices, a protective kit for the bottom and a towbar.
Polaris 570 BIG BOSS 6X6 Forest
The model differs from the American one in its excellent utilitarian characteristics: 6 drive wheels and a trunk capacity of 360 kilograms. However, the engine power for such heavy equipment seems insufficient - only 44 horsepower for almost five hundred kilograms of weight. Once in the mud, you need to turn at least 4 wheels (the front axle is connected here), and doing this with a weak engine is problematic. In addition, Polaris is not a very maneuverable vehicle due to the heavy design.
Another drawback of Polaris is its lack of reliability. Owners of these ATVs complain about their regular breakdowns.
BRP Outlander MAX 850 XT-P
The name Outlander MAX itself indicates the off-road capabilities of this device. The Canadian ATV is characterized by a large 850 cubic centimeter engine with a capacity of 78 horsepower, which, together with a low gear, provides great off-road capabilities. If the 850 cc engine is not enough, the Canadians offer an even more powerful liter version.
The model is standardly equipped with adjustable shock absorbers, a 1,350-kilogram winch, and wheels with Beadlock (locks in case of low tire pressure or powerful mechanical loads that prevent the tire from coming off the rim). The front differential does not need to be locked forcibly, as the automatic clutch will handle this. For an experienced ATV owner, this option may not be necessary, but for a beginner this feature is very useful.
The ATV is equipped with two luggage platforms. If necessary, the all-terrain vehicle can be transformed into a single-seater (the passenger seat can be removed). As a result, the carrying capacity will increase even more. A winch is included as standard.
Important! Some owners note the poor placement of the radiator on the BRP Outlander MAX 850 XT-P. A significant disadvantage of an ATV is its high cost. Prices start from one and a half million rubles.
CFMOTO X4 Basic
Despite their Chinese origin, the CFMOTO X4 Basic ATVs are of good quality. Moreover, their cost is relatively low. For hunters with a limited budget, this model is one of the priority ones in terms of price and quality ratio.
"CFMOTO X4 Basic" is equipped with a single-cylinder 400 cubic centimeter engine. A fuel injection system from Bosch is installed, as well as a CVTECH variator.
The water-cooled engine has good traction, which is very useful for a utilitarian all-terrain vehicle. The ATV reaches almost 100 km speed on the highway. In bad road conditions, a reduction gearbox is used to connect all-wheel drive. The all-terrain vehicle has a locking differential.
“CFMOTO X4 Basic” is a fairly comfortable ATV. It is equipped with an energy-intensive suspension. The engineers also thought through ergonomics, doing everything for the convenience of the driver and passenger. There is a backrest, the luggage platforms are reliable and make it possible to transport large loads. It is possible to install a “kenguryatnik”, which will protect against unpleasant surprises when driving off-road.
The rims are made of steel. Not the most modern solution, but we are talking about a budget model of an all-terrain vehicle.
Kawasaki Mule Pro-DXT
The name of this ATV fully reflects its essence: it is really a “mule” - a working device for overcoming off-road conditions and performing utilitarian functions. The all-terrain vehicle has a diesel liter engine with 3 cylinders. The engine has economical fuel consumption and good traction. The greatest torque occurs when it reaches 2.4 thousand rpm.
The variator is located in the same block with a reduction gearbox, so the ATV can easily overcome off-road conditions even with a passenger and a full load of luggage. Another advantage of the Kawasaki Mule Pro-DXT all-terrain vehicle is its large gas tank, which can hold 30 liters of diesel fuel. Thanks to this, as well as its utilitarian capabilities, the Japanese ATV is perfect for hunting and fishing trips.
Note! Compared to standard models, the strength of the variator on this model is 4 times higher.
The all-terrain vehicle from Kawasaki also has disadvantages, including:
- The battery and air filter are installed in a compartment near the wheel arch. If the jet ski gets into a deep puddle or body of water, water hammer may occur.
- Insufficient air intake, which can lead to overheating.
Yamaha Rhino 660
The Yamaha Rhino 660 model, popular among hunters, is equipped with a 660 cc single-cylinder engine with electronic fuel injection, a pair of hydraulic disc brakes, an updated parking brake, and a large tank with a capacity of 320 liters of fuel. The Yamaha Rhino 660 is capable of carrying up to 180 kilograms of cargo.
Stels ATV 800 Guepard Trophy Pro EPS
The Russian all-terrain vehicle "Gepard" is in steady demand among hunters and fishing enthusiasts. "Stels ATV 800 Guepard Trophy Pro EPS" has an 800 cc V-twin engine with two cylinders. Engine power - 67 horsepower.
Thanks to its high-torque engine, the Russian all-terrain vehicle performs well off-road. The ground clearance of the Cheetah is especially impressive - 32 centimeters. At the same time, owners of ATVs of this model note their good handling.
“Stels ATV 800 Guepard Trophy Pro EPS” has 2 seats and is equipped with comfortable seats. The design of the model is made in a masculine, slightly aggressive style, which softens the smooth lines of the body.
The premium package of the Gepard includes a winch, a passenger seat, a towbar and a front rack. The basic version does not have such options.
Look at the video review, which will help you decide which ATV to choose from the Stels Guepard series.
Do you need a license for a 50cc ATV?
Battery-powered electric ATVs have become especially popular in the last decade. These models belong to the category of children and teenagers; they are used, as a rule, for moving over rough terrain or local areas without going onto the road. In this case, the supervisory authorities do not have any questions and registration of rights to a children’s ATV is not required.
ATV 50cc
It’s a completely different matter if the all-terrain vehicle is equipped with an internal combustion engine (ICE) with a displacement of up to 50 cubic meters. Previously, owners of such ATVs could drive onto the roadway even without a driver's license. However, the resulting increase in cases of traffic violations and accidents led to changes in the current legislation. In particular, articles 25 and 26 of Federal Law No. 196 specified a new category “M”, which regulated access to driving quadricycles and mopeds.
By the way, do not confuse the quadricycle with ATVs. These are two different types of vehicles. Their differences are as follows:
- The ATV is designed for off-road travel. Quadricycles travel on public roads. Often their weight is limited to 400 kg.
- A PSM (self-propelled vehicle passport) is issued for an ATV, while a quadricycle has a PTS (technical vehicle passport).
- To drive ATVs, you need a license of category “A I” or “M” (for internal combustion engines with a volume of less than 50 cm³). To drive a quadricycle, you must obtain a driver's license of category “B1” or “M” (for light quadricycles).
- The practical part of passing exams for the license of category “A I” is usually limited to the demonstration of skills in a training ground. When taking the “B1” category, it is mandatory to travel in the city.
- A driver’s license, which gives the right to drive most models of ATVs (except those with a PTS), is obtained from Gostekhnadzor, while category “B1” licenses are obtained from the State Traffic Inspectorate.
ATVs with an internal combustion engine with a volume of less than 50 cm³ are equated to light quadricycles and mopeds, so you must obtain an “M” license to drive them.

Do you need a license for a 125-200cc ATV?
A license is also required for an ATV with an engine with a displacement of 125-200 cm³. Everything is clear here. In this case, Gostekhnadzor or the State Traffic Inspectorate can issue a driver’s license of category “A I”. It all depends on the availability of PTS. If you do not have a driver's license to operate a vehicle, the traffic police inspector has the right to issue a fine or even tow the ATV to a parking lot.
Why an “AI” category tractor driver’s license? Again, we return to RF Regulation No. 796 dated June 12, 1999, which states that all all-terrain vehicles must be registered by the owner. And all registered vehicles require a driver's license.
And one moment. Many people confuse categories “A I” and “A1”. The first one is issued for driving mopeds, ATVs and snowmobiles. The second is needed for traveling on light motorcycles.
Fine for driving an ATV without a license in 2022
According to federal legislation, driving a vehicle without a driver's license is punishable by a fine in the amount of 5,000 to 30,000 thousand rubles (Article 12.7, Part 1 of the Administrative Code).
Where can I get a license for an ATV?
The driver’s lack of documents for the ATV, including confirmation of its state registration, is a gross violation and may lead to the seizure of the vehicle and its placement in a impound lot.
Requirements for ATV drivers
Clause 11 of the RF PP No. 796 dated June 12, 1999 sets out the basic requirements for applicants for a driver’s license.
Only persons are allowed to take the exams:
- over 16 years of age;
- have successfully passed a medical examination;
- who have completed professional training in all-terrain vehicle driving courses.
If any of these conditions are not met, the applicant will not be allowed to take the exams.
List of documents
To obtain a driver's license, the applicant must prepare the following list of documents:
- Application on your own behalf for the issuance of a driver's license.
- Passport.
- Certificate of completion of a medical examination (confirming admission to exams).
- Driver's license of other categories (if available).
- Receipt for payment of state duty.
- Two photographs on 3x4 matte paper.
An applicant may be denied a medical certificate if he is diagnosed with the following diseases:
- endocrine disorders;
- epilepsy;
- motor dysfunctions;
- hepatitis;
- mental disorders;
- hearing and vision impairment;
- alcohol and drug addiction.
When paying the state fee, you must decide in advance on the type of license form. A driver's license issued on paper will cost 500 rubles, and on a plastic form – 2,000 rubles.
How is the exam going?
There are two ways to register for the exam:
- Contact the State Technical Supervision Authority at your place of registration or residence in person.
- Submit an online application through the State Services portal.
In the latter case, a receipt for payment of the fee and an invitation to the exam are sent to the user’s personal account. Even before the exam, you must provide the inspection with original documents and 2 photographs.
The exam takes place in accordance with the pre-approved schedule. Within the prescribed period, the applicant brings a passport and a certificate of medical examination.
Exam
The exam for obtaining a license to drive an ATV takes place in two stages: theoretical and practical. At the first stage, it is checked how the candidate has mastered the theory, namely:
- basics of safe vehicle control;
- Traffic Laws;
- the influence of factors (risks) that provoke emergency situations, as well as their consequences and ways to prevent them;
- design features of self-propelled vehicles;
- rules for providing first aid in cases of road accidents;
- types of administrative, criminal and other liability for traffic violations.
The exam card contains 28 questions. Of these, 8 questions relate to the topic “Basics of operating a self-propelled vehicle,” the remaining 20 to traffic rules, first aid and the design of an all-terrain vehicle. You are allowed to make one mistake in the first part and no more than two in the second. Moreover, if you fail the exam, you are allowed to retake it no earlier than 2 weeks later.
If the candidate has a valid driver's license, there is no need to take the theory test. An unsatisfactory grade in the theoretical part does not allow the candidate to take the internship.
The practical part of the exam to obtain a driving license is sometimes carried out in two stages. First at the training ground, then in real traffic conditions. The candidate must consistently follow all the instructor’s commands and demonstrate to him the skills of maneuvering, reversing, climbing, braking and “snake”.
Driving license category "B"
If you have a category “B” license, the owner of an ATV can only drive it if the engine displacement is limited to 50 cubic meters. In other cases, the driver is required to have a category “A I” driver’s license. To obtain it, the candidate only needs to pass the practical part of the exam and undergo a medical examination.
To summarize, it is worth noting: firstly, ATVs belong to the class of self-propelled vehicles, are registered with Gostekhnadzor and their operation requires obtaining an “AI” category driver’s license. Secondly, a license for an electric ATV with an engine less than 50 cc is not needed. But only on the condition that it is not used on public roads.
Driving on ATVs without a license or vehicle registration is punishable by heavy fines and the removal of equipment to an impound lot. Therefore, before purchasing a reliable steel friend, it is worth finding out all its technical characteristics and the resulting nuances of vehicle design.
