Rating TOP 10 best ATVs: which one to choose, characteristics, reviews, price

Anyone who does not have a passion for off-road driving can call an ATV a toy or a useless waste of money. But hunters, fishermen or simply those who like to conquer the vastness of nature cannot imagine their hobby without such a means of transportation. Where a car won't go, an ATV will go! Which ATV to choose for off-road driving?

Operating rules

The driver of an ATV must remember that he is driving a highly dangerous vehicle, and not neglect the safety rules:

  • use protective equipment: gloves, helmet, waterproof clothing and shoes;
  • persons over 16 years of age and lighter than 111 kg are allowed to drive;
  • you should sit on the ATV with your feet strictly on the footrests;
  • a helmet, according to the law, is not required when driving, but it is better not to neglect protection;
  • The driver must hold the steering wheel firmly, and the passenger must hold the special handles.

It is prohibited for persons who are intoxicated or unqualified to drive to drive a vehicle.

Classification

The rating of ATVs includes two types of equipment, the main difference of which is the scope of application:

  • Vehicles with an engine capacity of up to 250 cc. cm It is prohibited to drive on public roads.
  • Equipment with an engine capacity of more than 250 cc. cm must be registered, have a title and an insurance policy. It can be driven on roads if you have a category A1 license.

Although the law does not prohibit driving on highways, it should be borne in mind that ATV tires are designed for off-road use, and vehicle handling deteriorates on asphalt.

Types of ATVs depending on their cross-country ability

There are several types of ATVs, differing not only in appearance, but also in power, on which their purpose depends:

Sports models

Their purpose is to participate in off-road racing. Such ATVs have good speed and power, as well as lightness. The suspension of such devices is capable of softening impacts from strong jumps. Only experienced athletes can handle such an ATV.

Sports-utilitarian or touring ATVs

These models are capable of conquering off-road terrain, mountain trails and roads washed out by rain. These types of ATVs are suitable for hunters, fishermen and foresters; they are also convenient for hiking.

The features of such vehicles are reinforced suspension and a powerful engine, which improves overcoming steep climbs and holes, as well as being equipped with low-pressure tires. The latter improve grip on bad roads. But there is nothing to do on asphalt with such tires: driving is difficult and unsafe.

Sports-utilitarian ATVs are also focused on passenger comfort: there is a comfortable seating area, automatic gear shifting, and additional luggage racks, trunks and other accessories.

ATVs for utility purposes

The name speaks for itself: utility ATVs are designed to become human assistants when transporting small and large (if you use a trailer) items. Such vehicles are equipped with high power and traction. Towbars and other accessories are installed on them to expand their capabilities.

Children's ATVs

This technique is distinguished by its small size and weight, automatic gear shifting, not very powerful motor and low speed. Many models are equipped with a remote control function via a remote control. This is convenient when the child himself is still unable to cope with the ATV. Of course, manufacturers do not forget about the maximum level of safety for a small passenger.

Children's ATVs are mostly suitable for riding on flat roads, but there are also options for off-road riding.

Basic rules for caring for an ATV

An ATV is a complex piece of equipment that requires timely maintenance. Compliance with operating rules will help maintain the appearance and performance of the machine:

  • The vehicle must be stored in a dry, heated garage or under a cover;
  • oil change is carried out on a warm engine;
  • The carburetor should be cleaned from time to time either by yourself or at a service center;
  • tires of both regular and pneumatic wheels are periodically checked and worn ones are replaced;
  • The tire pressure is changed depending on the terrain: on smooth asphalt it is increased, on off-road it is decreased;
  • you should not overload the vehicle - an extra ten kilograms on the trunk can lead to its breakdown or cracks in the body;
  • After races, the ATV is washed with auto chemicals to protect parts from corrosion.

With proper care and careful use, the vehicle will serve the owner for a long time.

The rating of ATVs will help you choose a machine for every taste and budget, but before buying you should study catalogs with photos and technical characteristics, watch a film about the design of the vehicle, and then rent it and try it out.

Motorcycle for hunting

Regular motorcycles

Among the numerous brands of motorcycles, there are those that have long earned popularity among hunters due to their utilitarian qualities. We are talking primarily about Ural and MT.

Motorcycle Ural

Today, the Ural is the only heavy motorcycle produced in Russia. Manufactured at the Irbit motorcycle plant. Due to its large weight, it is most often used with a stroller, although there are also models without it. However, hunters are interested in motorcycles with sidecars, since they can carry loads.

Ural motorcycles are equipped with four-stroke two-cylinder boxer engines with a volume of 750 cubic centimeters. Engine power is 41 horsepower. The motorcycle is equipped with a four-speed transmission with reverse gear and a cardan drive for the rear wheel.

Motorcycle MT

The now discontinued MT model (another name is “Dnepr”) is still in demand among hunters and fishermen on the secondary market. There are many modifications of MT motorcycles, as they were produced from the 50s to the 90s.

An example of a utilitarian motorcycle for hunting of the Dnepr brand is the MT-11 model. Its main technical characteristics:

  • two-cylinder four-stroke carburetor engine;
  • engine power - 24 horsepower;
  • air cooling;
  • double-disc dry clutch;
  • transmission with four speeds and reverse;
  • The rear wheel suspension is made as a lever suspension with spring-hydraulic shock absorbers;
  • drum brakes;
  • maximum speed - 100 kilometers per hour;
  • fuel consumption - 7.5 liters per 100 kilometers;
  • fuel tank 19 liters.

Two-wheeled all-terrain vehicles

Most often, all-terrain vehicles are produced in three-wheel (tricycles) or four-wheel configurations (quads). However, there are also two-wheeled models designed for use in off-road conditions. Typically, such an all-terrain vehicle is equipped with the most simple, but reliable and powerful engine, automatic transmission and off-road tires.

Important! The main qualities of any all-terrain vehicle, including off-road ones, are unpretentiousness, cross-country ability, good engine traction and resistance to mechanical damage.

Compared to tricycles and ATVs, two-wheeled models are more maneuverable. Light weight allows you to move where a heavy ATV cannot pass or will be loaded due to its size and weight.

Operational Features

Naturally, such equipment should be properly looked after; a competent approach will ensure a long service life and rare repairs. For proper care, the following measures should be taken:

  • timely oil change;
  • cleaning the carburetor;
  • replacing seals;
  • monitoring fasteners, tightening, replacing them if necessary.

How to use it correctly?

  1. First you need to sit on the seat, turn the ignition key and start the engine.
  2. Then you need to engage first gear. If it is not possible to change gears, you must turn on the “forward” mode at maximum speed.
  3. After these manipulations, you should smoothly press the gas pedal. After this, the ATV will move forward, and the harder the driver presses the gas, the faster the vehicle will go.
  4. When traveling on uneven surfaces with ravines and holes, it is necessary to switch the “forward” mode to minimum speed. If you need to engage reverse, there is a special lever for this. The brake, of course, is provided in all models. Since an ATV is an extreme type of transport, its design has an emergency braking system.

Best Budget ATV with Electric Power Steering: CFMOTO CFORCE 400L EPS

Price is also a fairly important characteristic of an ATV. If your budget is limited, the choice of models will be small. But there are some great options when it comes to affordable ATVs.

CFORCE 400L EPS (X4 EPS) is surprisingly good for its price tag (as of August 2022 it is a little more than 524 thousand rubles): it has two seats (passenger - with a backrest), rear-view mirrors, an electric winch for 1100 kg and a modern LCD instrument panel. That is, the basic configuration includes everything that other manufacturers usually remove from budget models.

The model’s engine is 31-horsepower, economical, but capable of accelerating the ATV to 95 km/h on a good flat road. Wheels with a diameter of 25 inches with a mud tread, ground clearance - 25 cm, there are cargo luggage racks in the front and rear. There is also switchable all-wheel drive and a steel front bumper.

As a result, we have a fully equipped small ATV, which is plenty enough for beginners, or for not too difficult routes and hunting and fishing trips.

In our top 10 ATVs of 2022, in addition to the traditional leaders (Can-Am and Polaris) and the long-known Grizzly, there were also new names from the CFMOTO line. Despite the comparative “youth” of the brand, its products have excellent characteristics and equipment, modern design, and, no less important, an affordable price tag.

Varieties

According to their intended purpose, ATVs are usually divided into 3 groups:

  1. Sports all-terrain vehicles. They are distinguished by good speed performance (maximum speed and rapid acceleration), maneuverability, and relatively low weight. Designed primarily for movement on level surfaces. Sports ATVs have low ground clearance, which is one of the factors that makes them unsuitable for off-road use. Most often, sports models are equipped with a manual transmission and two drive wheels. The maneuverability of the ATV is achieved thanks to the independent suspension.

  1. Utilitarian all-terrain vehicles. Utility means the ability to use additional equipment, for which special fastenings are provided. Powerful modifications used for cross-country travel, for use in agricultural or snow removal work, for transporting goods and other practical purposes. They are characterized by large weight, powerful engine and all-wheel drive. Ideal for traveling in suburban conditions and can be used for outdoor trips. They have one or two spacious trunks. A characteristic feature is large wheels with a deep tread pattern.
  2. Tourist all-terrain vehicles. Ideal for hunting. Such models are lighter than utilitarian ones, but at the same time they also have many of their advantages, including all-weather and cross-country ability. The latter quality is achieved by high ground clearance and low tire pressure, which allows you to overcome both snowdrifts and sand dunes. They have good handling. There are not only single-seat models on the market, but also double-seat models, which are much more popular among hunters and fishermen.

Side-by-side ATVs

It is worth mentioning separately about side-by-side all-terrain vehicles. This motorcycle also belongs to ATVs, but unlike standard modifications it is equipped with a steering wheel, like in a car. All-terrain vehicles of this type use row seats (hence the name - side-by-side, meaning “side by side”). Another name for Side-by-side all-terrain vehicles is Utility Track Vehicle (UTV).

Side-by-side most often have 2 driving axles. In some cases there is a sliding third axle (not driving). There are also three-axle all-wheel drive modifications.

Utility Track Vehicles run on gasoline. The gearbox is continuously variable with a V-belt variator.

UTVs can accommodate 2 to 6 people. Passengers are provided with seat belts. There may be a cargo box in the rear. If necessary, additional equipment is installed, for example: side insulation, windshield, hard roof, etc.

Tricycles

The name tricycle refers to three-wheeled vehicles of all types, including motorized ones. This is the simplest type of all-terrain vehicle, produced on a motorcycle base.

Tricycles have the following advantages:

  • simplicity of design, easy maintenance, reliability;
  • all main elements are easily accessible, which facilitates repair work;
  • due to their design features they are distinguished by maneuverability;
  • efficiency achieved due to lower weight compared to ATVs;
  • good speed capabilities (up to 50 kilometers per hour);
  • normal level of comfort (motorcycle shock absorbers are used);
  • normal transportability - the tricycle weighs about 320-360 kilograms, which allows it to be transported in a trailer;
  • good buoyancy, allowing movement through swampy areas and shallow bodies of water;
  • affordable price.

Disadvantages of tricycles:

  • lack of a cabin;
  • impossibility of rear-wheel drive;
  • travels on 3 tracks, which makes it difficult to move in off-road conditions along deep ruts left by heavy equipment - difficulties may arise when moving on any soft soils (sand, wetlands, mud, etc.);
  • no power steering;
  • little space for luggage;
  • no reverse gear;
  • The engine air cooling system is used. As a result, the engine may overheat at high loads.

Motorcycles for hunting

They are two-wheeled vehicles with off-road capabilities. They are characterized by increased ground clearance, robust construction and special all-terrain tires.

Motorized towing vehicles (motorized dogs)

Motorized vehicles in which a towing vehicle on tracks is connected to a sled. In this case, the driver and luggage are located on a sleigh or drag. Modifications with a cargo compartment on the motorized towing vehicle are also offered. The most commonly used carburetor gasoline engine with one cylinder.
