Motorcycle Honda FJS 400 Silver Wing 2008 review
Description of the Honda FJS 400 Silver Wing 2008 motorcycle is in the queue for publication of the article. Announcement: Today, for almost every new motorcycle that comes into being, marketers strive to carve out their own niche. This one is a road sport, this one is a recreational enduro. But what class should we include a motorcycle that has a little bit of everything? A good bike should have a reliable engine, comfortable ergonomics and simple controls...
Honda FJS 400 Silver Wing is a very rare motorcycle in Russia equipped with a high-power 38 hp engine. Despite the fact that good models of motorcycles have a very respectable price, and the season for their use is relatively short, the motorcycle market is developing rapidly. And if you believe the words of dealers, then some models of recently released motorcycles are selling like hot cakes at the beginning of the season, and the models brought to Russia are clearly not enough to fully satisfy consumer demand.
A motorcycle has long ceased to be an alternative to a car, and the times when this equipment was bought only because there was not enough money for a full-fledged car are forgotten. Nowadays, two-wheelers can be called technological marvels in many cases, and their cost can be compared with that of prestigious cars.
Many people have started buying motorcycles for hobby purposes as riding or even collecting them has become a good pastime for many people. Many motorcycles, for example the Honda FJS 400 Silver Wing, whose technical characteristics allow the model to be called a prestigious brand, are in demand among both beginners and experienced motorcyclists.
Motorcycles with an engine capacity of 398 cc / 24.3 cu-in. see, appeared as a result of long work of inventors who sought to create a model that was not inferior in characteristics to other versions of the motorcycle. In some cases, these models are not only not inferior, but also ahead of other motorcycles, as they have minimal fuel consumption and other excellent parameters.
Motorcycles from 250 to 400 kb. see which includes the Honda FJS 400 Silver Wing - this is the most common class of motorcycles. In this range you already have a choice among almost all classes of motorcycles. Many people call this category the most suitable for a first motorcycle. You can purchase a moderately heavy, powerful and flexible motorcycle for relatively little money. Many people advise taking a road bike with a 400 cc engine as your first choice. We cannot completely agree with this, because such motorcycles often weigh about 200 kg and have a sufficient power reserve. If your skills in riding a two-wheeled vehicle are limited to a training motorcycle at a motorcycle school, then you should not immediately take such a device. Many beginners get into ridiculous accidents simply because they do not know all the features of operating such equipment. After all, the heavier and more powerful the motorcycle, the better you should know how to handle it in different situations. Even a monkey can just drive in a straight line (no joke).

Honda updates Silverwing 600 model
text from MotoReview
Honda FJS 600 Silver Wing: 582 cm3, 223 kg, 96 hp, $6700-14900
“Silver Wing”... In the early 80s, this was the name of the “suitcased” touring version of the two-cylinder CX500, known in our country as the “Japanese boxer”, and in the West as the favorite car of motorcycle couriers. In the fall of 2000, this name was given to the largest maxi-scooter at that time. A year later, the even more “large-caliber” Suzuki Burgman 650 appeared, but to this day Honda retains its primacy in wheelbase (1595 mm), maximum speed (according to various independent experts, 161-164 km/h), and in some European countries ( and also in Russia) – and at retail price. The latter is more than strange: there is no trace of the electronic control of the variator, nor the “guitar” of the final drive gears on the “Wing”. Although the car is more complex than, say, the Majesty 250. The engine is two-cylinder, four valves per cylinder, injection. And most importantly, there is a clever connection with the transmission, thanks to which the variator is combined “scooter-style” with the pendulum, and the engine itself rests in the frame, like in motorcycles. Otherwise, it’s a typical “self-propelled sofa”, only very large: length 2275 mm, which is even longer than the mentioned “Big Burger”, and only slightly less than the “large-wheeled” Aprilia Scarabeo 500.
But what really makes Silver Wing valuable is that it is the only “hypermaxi” that can be quite freely purchased used. No other device of this class has taken root in Japan (and imports from Europe are expensive, like devices previously purchased in Russia), “little Golda” is a frequent guest in the price lists of salons selling second-hand goods. Moreover, the price is quite acceptable, especially considering that the official dealer is asking $14,900 for a new copy. However, the new versions have been equipped with ABS for the second year already, and the color range will be richer. And the 400 cc 38-horsepower version (its designation is NF-01) will not be sold under the guise of a “six hundredth” (PF-01). So look carefully at the VIN when purchasing. We got a 2002 copy for testing with a mileage of 24,000 km. “Fresh” enough (although it’s noticeable that it’s not new) so as not to make allowances for the technical condition of the car and get the most out of it.
Alexander Astapov, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Motor Review Height – 182 cm, driving experience – 20 years, drives an Italjet Dragster XX Oh, handsome! I really think “Silver” is the only truly stylish “self-propelled sofa” (the dashboard alone is worth it!), which is especially surprising in light of, to put it mildly, the unsightly nature of the vast majority of scooters with crow feathers on the emblem. The most beautiful, largest - and most expensive. You have to pay for everything... For what? Why do you have to pay fourteen kilobucks? (Well, okay, okay, “only” $6,700 for this used copy). For comfort? The fact that this leviathan is cramped even with my height, which is by no means a grenadier, is this comfort? Or can we call comfort what mercilessly pours into your boots when it rains (this is in a raincoat and untucked motorcycle pants!)? But in a wind tunnel this is “calculated” at once. Saved on purges? Oh, yay, yay, and also Honda - even Malaguti, tiny compared to Japanese concerns, sells its Maxis here in Dmitrov. Shame on you, Japanese-san! Then for the dynamics? But the Silver Wing accelerates to “hundreds” a little better than much cheaper 400-500 cc “sofas” and even tuned “one hundred eighties”, and Tmax and Nexus, not to mention the Burgman 650, simply abuse the “silver” at the start from place. After 100 km/h, the flight is truly mental. Here I drove the speedometer needle down the hill almost close to the o. But I accelerated along the Moscow Ring Road at night, when there was not a soul around, and from seven to 22 o’clock there was more than 150 “on the instruments” and you couldn’t even think about it! Moreover, at the cost of constant “chessboard” lane changes: it is not always possible to pass the left “row spacing” in a zigzag or just in a straight line. This is due to both the width and considerable mass (and therefore inertia around the vertical axis), due to which you “break” the car into a turn with the effort of your hands, and not with a light slap on the handle, as on a normal scooter. Let it go to waste, this dynamics, if you have to pay for it with maneuverability and safety!
Then what else? For the bells and whistles? They are not here, not counting fuel injection and the ingenious design of the power unit (hmm, if something happens, repairs will cost a pretty penny). Even ABS - and that ku-ku (it appeared on Silver cars only in 2003). Why, ABS, spoilers on the handles - even those are missing, and therefore my hands get cold in the autumn rain, just like on my Dragster. So is everything bad? No, the device has undoubted advantages: a well-balanced chassis in terms of comfort and handling, stability, cargo capacity (a liter bottle of vodka fits into the left lockable glove compartment). But these “advantages” will be appreciated either by phlegmatic people, or by those who do not know how to walk quickly in traffic (no matter, due to prevailing driving habits or inexperience - by the way, the car is quite suitable for “dummies”, because it forgives many mistakes in “piloting”). I am neither one nor the other, and I can bring booze in the “toilet.” And therefore my next scooter will be a completely different device. I don’t know what brand yet, but I’ll be sure with the 250 cc LEADER. Much more compact and lighter, and at the same time NEW. I think with all the tuning, styling and other gadgets it will cost about the same money. And yet there is something in these “megamaxi”. Maybe save some money and take Tmax?
Leonid Yushkin, Motor Review expert Height - 186 cm, driving experience - 22 years, drives a Suzuki DR-Z400 Usually they compare motorcycles with sports cars, and scooters with automatic cars. In principle, I can agree with this, but for me the image of a scooter is not the usual “fifty dollars” or 125 cc scooters with a CVT, but large maxi and business class models, which have some semblance of a “salon” and almost a roof . These are truly full-fledged two-wheeled creatures that you want to discuss, examine and, of course, ride.
I also want to test the “silver wing” in action because with all the abundance of used devices of this class, the Silver Wing is not a frequent visitor to us. Specialized scooter showrooms, of course, import a couple during the season, but in ordinary stores selling second-hand goods, the model is a rarity. Most fans can't afford it, and those who can pay usually buy a new one. And this is understandable - almost “gold” and “automatically”. An interesting offer for lovers of chic. After all, the device is solid in all respects: size, cubic capacity, equipment, and comfort - all of a fashionable class.
I didn’t manage to drive much on it – only a couple of hundred kilometers, but my opinion was formed almost immediately. As for the fit and accessibility of the controls, there are no comments here. The seat cushion is comfortable, the back even more so, and the legs can be placed either way. This is an important quality - when traveling (why not head south in Silver?) you will probably want to periodically change your body position behind the wheel. By the way, the latter is very conveniently located - the arms are slightly bent, and not, like with ordinary scooters, almost near the stomach. But I would make the height of the steering column a little higher. Movement at low speed is difficult due to the large mass. Here everything is very similar to big motorcycles, but there you feel the “body” more subtly, and here it’s like on a chair. Therefore, I want to immediately rush and open the trigger. Then everything is the same as with a tourer - as soon as the speedometer needle crosses the 10-15 km/h mark, the weight of the scooter ceases to be felt, and it simply starts driving itself, obediently tracing the curves of a simple trajectory. But it’s better to prepare for turns in advance - he doesn’t like sudden body movements.
600 motor cubes... By scooter standards, this is a lot. The pilot does not feel this. I know many cases when buyers drove around and asked – is this a four hundred? The tachometer is marked up to 8500 rpm, and up to half this value the thrust is very mediocre. It seems that the designers specifically protected the owners from excessively rapid acceleration. The people they travel with are respectable. All of a sudden the throttle starts to go crazy. Honda cares about its customers. But our brother-scooter usually “shoots” at once and for all the money - so, somewhere at 5000 rpm there is a pick-up. And in general, when driving at a speed of 50-60 km/h, the transmission just maintains these engine speeds, and in such modes the car is able to “shoot” well. If this expression is at all acceptable to an almost 300 kilogram (with driver) car. Acceleration to 120 km/h is easy, further it is also possible, but the cricket is already starting to itch - the chassis behaves somehow strangely on our asphalt. And once you hit the pits, it almost starts to spin, especially in long turns. Therefore, a maximum of 160 km/h is, in principle, easily achievable, but don’t expect the same comfort and stability as up to 120 km/h. Why is that? It seems that the rear swingarm is quite powerful, and the frame is quite strong. Probably, the wheel size and comfortable suspension settings for our potholes are not the best solution. It is important to note that on the new asphalt the car “goes” perfectly, like a glove.
The combined brake system with Nissin calipers is a godsend. It will be appreciated by inexperienced drivers, and in the future it will help to avoid dangerous situations on the road. After all, with such a mass and base, it is very easy to accidentally block the wheels, especially the rear ones. So, despite all the noted shortcomings, the model is very interesting and noticeable. A good opportunity to join the world of two wheels for those who no longer want to master all sorts of clutches and switching a foot-operated gearbox, and also require a certain comfort and chic from the vehicle. In any case, it would not be a shame to keep such a car in an underground garage next to the “geldings” or “boomers”. By the way, what’s even more important is that you’ll definitely get to work or a meeting in the Silver Wing faster than the same “merens”, even if they have ten flashing lights.
Andrey Trifonov, columnist for “Motoreview” Height – 191 cm, driving experience – 10 years, drives a Suzuki GSF1200S Bandit, life has little to do with scooters. So, several times I drove in the village to “catch up” with the nearest “commercial structure”, and then in such a state that I no longer remember my feelings. Something so small, nimble and flimsy breaks and roars between the legs, cutting through the darkness with a half-broken headlight. Therefore, I never understood this type of transport and its users. What kind of people ride them? Yes, every day and to work. No speed reserve, no brakes, no appearance. Just suicides! And then another “sight” - ride, they say, a business class scooter. I have nothing to compare it to!? It doesn’t matter, they answer, you can write your first opinion. If I have to, then I’ll do it, but what can the pilot of a GT car say about an automatic car? Here, here... In general, the prospects for the test seemed rather vague to me.
Looking at the stern and somehow evil face of the Silver's headlights, I suddenly noticed an interesting feature. Look at the front part, it resembles the face of an eagle! The turn signals are the evil eyes of a predator, anticipating tasty prey, and the headlight is a beak... It’s nothing other than Honda’s hint at the symbolizing image of freedom and greatness. Let's look further. Handsome, to say the least. True, the front wing spoils the impression a little, its shape is slightly out of fashion, and the small wheels somehow look out of place with such a huge wheelbase...
Well, let's sit down. Wait, am I on a Silver Wing or a BMW K1200LT!? How similar they are in comfort! That's it, comrades, the luxury tourer and the maxi-scooter have the same comfort! Although in the current case there are still flaws: no matter how funny it sounds, there is not enough space on the seat, the legs are in the way, and in general the landing is kind of chopper. Developer error? A tribute to technical specifications? Or is it designed for small Japanese people? The dashboard is made in automotive style and looks very nice. In general, the first meeting was a pleasant surprise. Silver has nothing in common with regular scooters or what I usually thought of as that term. Here's another observation. There are such devices, and this statement applies equally to cars and motorcycles, which simply do not look good on Russian roads. This can include a huge number of exotic cars, the already mentioned luxury tourers, and even our today’s “defendant”. He would look like an average European office worker with a briefcase, afraid to come to work five minutes late, and not me in a frayed motorcycle jacket... Well, exactly, here’s confirmation of my words - the “gayman” waves his wand in a friendly manner towards the side of the road. Now I’ll have to explain something to him... But if I was driving in a jacket, with a tie in the wind and a briefcase in my teeth, then no guard would pay any attention.
Comrade inspector asks: what's inside? No problem! So, a key in the side, and Honda opens its huge mouth. Don't be afraid, there are no teeth there, there is a huge trunk. A picnic set, a set for a fisherman, or even all the tourist gear will fit here! Although the picnic will only be possible on the side of the road - off-road on the “Silver Eagle”, oh, excuse me, “Silver Wing”, like on a tractor to the skies... “Solid scooter”... I absolutely agree with the opinion of the serviceman. He probably thinks that now I’ll punish him for not having a number. Well, you'll have to talk your teeth: a combination of fairly high power, strict, functional design and a comfortable, balanced chassis, thanks to which the scooter is easy to control... And so on. He talked about the power and the dynamics of acceleration. How could we live without it?
Then there was about an hour's drive through the capital's traffic jams, a small area outside the city completely free of cars, and a winding forest path near the dacha. What to say? I liked him. So confident, sedate, measured. It easily goes up to 120 km/h, I haven’t tried it further - I’m afraid. The car does not provoke any madness at all and handles quite well in this element. Good wind protection and combined braking system. In general, sitting on this big scooter, you want to think about pleasant future prospects. Suddenly, tomorrow everyone will become polite Europeans and will say “sorry, please” when stepping on their feet in public transport...
Mikhail Lapshin, deputy editor-in-chief of Motorreview Height - 193 cm, driving experience - 12 years, drives a Honda CBR600F I look at him and with some completely unfamiliar feeling of nostalgia I begin to remember my old school days. Then, against the backdrop of the tank-shaped “bodies” of Soviet motorcycles, foreign scooters suddenly began to flash. With what pleasure I rode them, tried to compare them, looked for leaders... Funny! And now I’m sitting behind the wheel of this “silver” and, looking at my reflection in the rear-view mirrors, I once again ask myself the question: how could you admire these things that are called “stools”? Sorry, gentlemen, scooterists, do not take all further text to heart. It just hurt! I'm just not a scooter person. It’s just that, having driven a gigantic number of these cars in my life, one day I realized that I can no longer make a mountain out of a molehill. It’s just a vehicle for those who seem to really want to be close to motorcycle laws, but in reality avoid them. Demands equality and demands such cars that they drive no worse than motorcycles. Why on earth? Born to crawl... Well, you know the rest.
Business class is an exception, albeit with a stretch. Why? But it’s simply very problematic to pass off such a colossus as a “poltos” and thereby save on “licenses,” on insurance, technical inspection, and so on. Although here the budget, costs and overall image are completely different. In the conditions of our reality, behind the wheel of a Silver Wing, I imagine either a wealthy and middle-aged person, or a wealthy major with a wad of money in his pocket for excuses. All this means that this device in our country is like a black crow - out of place and out of time. So – it’s just pampering. However, sometimes he also needs to be assessed... So, let's begin the execution. I liked the “tidy” both for its information content and for its glare protection - the dials are recessed into the “glasses”. Indicators of fuel level in the tank and engine temperature are even liquid crystal! The light optics are also good - the “face” is almost “narrow”, and the chopped “back” is almost automotive. The muffler “loaf” looks cool from the side, but the two holes at the end clearly cancel out all previous achievements. So, we throw a backpack with documents under the saddle (wow, the size of the container is not frail!), down with the stand, and off we go...
The last cars of this class that I rode were the Suzuki Burgman 650 and the Yamaha Tmax. Therefore, I thought that the “silver” would at least have approximately the same ergonomics. But already at the first turn unpleasant revelations began. Not only did the device very lazily “lay down” on the specified trajectory, but at the most inopportune moment the base of the steering wheel suddenly rested painfully on my knee. Damn it, how can I move the steering wheel further? Bend your knee? Of course, my legs are not small, but on cars even in the 400 cm3 class, everything seemed to be fine with this matter. Moreover, you can’t move back - there’s a stop, you can’t bring your feet closer together, like on scooters - there’s a “ridge-tunnel” on the platform. There are two options left - to open your knees, as on a gynecological chair, or vice versa - to close them, as after a blow to the groin. To be honest, after that I didn’t really want to go further. And besides, the engine turned out to be quite sluggish. Well, just no traction until 4500 rpm, and some semblance of pick-up after that. Acceleration to “hundreds” is mediocre, and handling (well, there is slalom between cars, cornering) is very relative. You can feel the weight distribution is not entirely successful, and the overall considerable weight (curb 222 kg!). What works well is moving in a straight line - we are not afraid of bad weather behind the glass and fairing. Although, for some reason, the cold autumn oncoming wind blows mercilessly through the legs above the motorcycle boots. What kind of turbulence is this? At 140 km/h it makes itself felt even more. And at a maximum of 160 km/h, this is mixed with a terrible feeling of non-rigidity of the entire chassis. This is indeed a sofa that was put on wheels and moved up the staircase.
Thank God, a traffic jam and a couple of scooter riders were looming on the horizon, hurrying to the lookout. We need to add variety! Of course, I caught up with them, but it turned out to be very difficult to overtake them. Firstly, a couple of times I stuck the steering wheel into car mirrors and in those places where scooters had just passed with sufficient clearance. Secondly, it was possible to turn between the bumpers in two or three passes, like on a chopper. Almost simultaneously we rolled out onto the green, and then, naturally, I made them, but again only in the first meters. And who came up with these variator settings? The route planned in advance was then cut almost in half - I was tired and disappointed by this “silver”. I rode and cursed the creators and all the scooters to the heap. And here again these “traffic jams”, again these “chisels” posing as Formula 1 cars. Naturally, I “vented” my anger on them, and gradually the negativity disappeared - it already rolled up to the editorial office in a complacent mood. The first question: “So how?” “You know, well... nothing...”
Alexander Dmitriev, editor-in-chief of "Motoreview" Height - 183 cm, driving experience - 16 years, rides a Suzuki DR-Z400 I remember two trips on scooters in my life: in 1996 on a Honda Super Cub 100, when I could not walk after an injury on foot, and in 1998 on a Yamaha BW's Spy, when he decided to save on gasoline after the crisis. In the first case, I was almost run over by O, and in the second, I drove from the dacha to Moscow at a speed of 50 km/h for two and a half hours, and when I stopped for refueling (in full gear), and the gas station attendant asked me how long it was going, I answered - 50. After that, I didn’t want to ride scooters at all, and I didn’t do it. Therefore, acquaintance with Silver Wing caused rather pessimism. But in terms of the ratio of the price of a used copy to the price of a new one, this position is certainly promising on the Russian market - and therefore, if you please, test it... And what do you think? I enjoyed riding this scooter, which I no longer wanted to call a scooter. Excellent comfort, comfortable fit and, most importantly, a general feeling of solidity. I don’t know, I haven’t ridden other Maxis, but Honda gave me exactly what I was missing in scooters before. Decent power, sufficient dynamics, wind protection, automatic transmission, after all, what else is needed for a quiet ride? However, I’m lying, and if I didn’t know that there was a 600 cc “deuce” under the linings, I wouldn’t believe it. For me - 400 cubes.
Nevertheless, I am driving 120 km/h, the small wheels respond surprisingly well to the Moscow asphalt, and the drivers of neighboring cars do not want to run over me at all, moreover, they notice in advance, which sometimes does not happen with some motorcycles, even with high beams . I increase the gas: 130, 140, 150 - a smooth highway allows you to rush at that speed! An extremely pleasant thing. How can you ride on it with a passenger? Due to the chopper geometry and the relatively low center of gravity, there can be no talk of any sharp control - accordingly, the “second number” has practically no effect on the movement.
I discovered a strange flaw in the parking lot: when driving slowly, if you look straight ahead, the convexity of the windshield distorts the perspective, and you can be deceived in judging the distance to an obstacle. For the 150 km that I drove the Silver around the city, I never got used to this “fun”.
In general, a good thing - even for that kind of money. Unusual - once. Comfortable and convenient – two. Fast, yes, really fast - three. And beautiful. In my opinion.
