Honda CBR650F (2014-2018)

Honda CBR650F sports touring motorcycle model

was introduced in 2014 as a budget road motorcycle with a plastic body kit. At the same time, a naked version was presented, called the Honda CB650F. Both models are absolutely identical in technical terms and differ only in the front plastic and the type of steering wheel (on the CBR650F there are clip-ons, on the CB650F there is a classic U-shaped steering wheel). The Honda CBR650F is assembled at the Honda plant in Thailand.

The Honda CBR650F is based on a new in-line 4-cylinder liquid-cooled engine with a volume of 649 cm³ and producing 87 hp. power and 63 Nm of torque. The engine is derated and tuned for confident traction from low and medium speeds, showing maximum performance at 8000-11000 rpm. Since 2022, the engine settings have been optimized, thanks to which the maximum power has increased to almost 90 hp and torque to 64 Nm.

The Honda CBR650F positions itself as a budget sports motorcycle aimed at various categories of pilots - from beginners to experienced ones. The deforcing engine, coupled with smooth power take-off, a comfortable seating position and the presence of ABS, make this model as versatile as possible and suitable for the role of a first motorcycle.

Main competitors of Honda CBR650F:

  • Kawasaki ER-6F
  • Suzuki GSF650SA Bandit
  • Yamaha XJ6 Diversion F

Speaking about the reasons for the appearance of the Honda CBR650F and Honda CB650F models on the market, it seems obvious that Honda is striving to occupy the niche of budget city motorcycles for every day, where “Ruffs” and “Diversions” reign supreme. After all, despite having a whole line of flagship naked bikes and sports (which, by the way, are in great demand), Honda did not have a budget series of motorcycles that could compete on equal terms with the XJ6 Diversion or the ER-6, mainly in price. The appearance of the Honda CBR650F and Honda CB650F solved this problem. Yes, such models do not have sporting characteristics and advanced racing technologies, but they are more promising from the point of view of targeting the broad masses of consumers.

2018 was the last year of production of the model, after which it was replaced by a new one - the Honda CBR650R.

Chassis and brakes

The frame of this bike is made of reliable steel and is a very road-worthy body. The interestingly shaped alloy wheels are combined with a sporty-looking steering wheel. In general, the entire exterior hints at the racing nature of the motorcycle, so some may be surprised when they learn that this is not a sportbike.

A progressive monoshock at the rear is combined with a 41mm telescopic fork front suspension. The CBR 650 F is braked at the rear by one disc with a diameter of 240 mm and a single-piston caliper, and at the front by two discs of 320 mm each and two-piston calipers. There is ABS, which makes the braking system much better.

Bike features

Here are the main features of the Honda SBR 650 F:

  • budget;
  • flexible disposition;
  • high performance for the class.

What many will like about this model is that it responds very smoothly to driver inputs. However, it has quite a lot of potential, which should not be forgotten. Still, among road motorcycles this is one of the most powerful options.

Motorcycle Honda CBR 650F 2022 review

The description of the Honda CBR 650F 2022 motorcycle is in the queue for publication of the article. Announcement: Today, for almost every new motorcycle that comes into being, marketers strive to carve out their own niche. This one is a road sport, this one is a recreational enduro. But what class should we include a motorcycle that has a little bit of everything? A good bike should have a reliable engine, comfortable ergonomics and simple controls...

Honda CBR 650F is a very rare motorcycle in Russia equipped with a fairly powerful 89.8 hp engine. Despite the fact that good models of motorcycles have a very respectable price, and the season for their use is relatively short, the motorcycle market is developing rapidly. And if you believe the words of dealers, then some models of recently released motorcycles are selling like hot cakes at the beginning of the season, and the models brought to Russia are clearly not enough to fully satisfy consumer demand.

A motorcycle has long ceased to be an alternative to a car, and the times when this equipment was bought only because there was not enough money for a full-fledged car are forgotten. Nowadays, two-wheelers can be called technological marvels in many cases, and their cost can be compared with that of prestigious cars.

Many people have started buying motorcycles for hobby purposes as riding or even collecting them has become a good pastime for many people. Many motorcycles, for example the Honda CBR 650F, whose technical characteristics make it possible to call the model a prestigious brand, are in demand among both beginners and experienced motorcyclists.

Motorcycles with an engine capacity of 649 cc / 39.6 cu-in. see, appeared as a result of long work of inventors who sought to create a model that was not inferior in characteristics to other versions of the motorcycle. In some cases, these models are not only not inferior, but also ahead of other motorcycles, as they have minimal fuel consumption and other excellent parameters.

Motorcycles with an engine capacity of more than 400 kb. cm, which includes the Honda CBR 650F - this category of motorcycles simply cannot claim the title of “motorcycle for a beginner.” On the contrary, this is already a serious technique that requires certain control of motorcycle equipment with a smaller engine capacity. Yes, she attracts more attention, she is the most beautiful, fast, interesting and there is a huge selection of models. But as power increases, the weight of the motorcycle inevitably increases. In this class you are unlikely to find motorcycles lighter than 180 kg, unless they are the latest motorcycle models.

Hello everyone, Bikepost ! Almost 2 years ago, the world saw my last post, which was called “First impressions of the 2018 Honda CBR650F” - two years ago I bought a new motorcycle, and I was very pleased with it. A balanced bike, good components, a reasonable price - I was completely satisfied with everything, and over these two years we traveled together more than 12,000 kilometers along European roads.

Meanwhile, in 2022, Honda released an updated model (not to be confused with the F-ki restyling in 2022, which I wrote about in the last post), introducing a large number of small (and not so small) changes. Considering that I took out a loan for the first bike for 2 years, and in May I had to decide what to do - buy back the old motorcycle or not, I weighed the pros and cons and purchased a new beast - a 2020 Honda CBR650R

Honda CBR650R 2020

I hope this article will be of interest both to owners of the previous generation who are thinking about an upgrade, and to those who are thinking about buying this motorcycle from scratch.

Briefly about the motorcycle

The CBR650R is the direct successor to the CBR650F 2017-2018 model year, and, in my humble opinion, is a kind of work on the mistakes that were made when creating the F-ki. The new motorcycle still has a naked brother (called CB650R ), which is completely identical to the full version in terms of technology, but unlike the previous generation model, it differs significantly more in design.

Updates to R versus F

As I wrote above, the new motorcycle was a work on the mistakes of the previous model, both in terms of cosmetics and technology. In order: • Engine: the same 4 cylinders, 649 cc. see. By updating the intake and exhaust systems, as well as increasing the compression ratio, Honda engineers expanded the operating range, shifted the “red zone” by about 1000 rpm, and increased output. The bike now produces 95bhp, up from 89bhp. F-ki (18th year). • Dashboard: The old archaic monochrome one has been replaced by a modern LCD panel. A simple on-board computer appeared and an indication of the current gear engaged. • Electronics: the previous bike was equipped only with an ABS system; The new motorcycle comes with a slipper clutch and HSTC (Honda's Selectable Torque Control) traction control system. • The seating position: has become more sporty, the clip-ons have become lower and further, the footpegs are slightly higher and slightly moved back. • Suspension: Major update to the front suspension. Instead of a telescopic front fork, the R-tube is equipped with a Showa split-action inverted fork. • Brakes: the front brake system has been upgraded - the two brake discs at the front have become thinner from 320 to 310 mm, the front calipers are 4-piston radial. • Fuel tank: decreased from 17.3 liters to 15.4 liters. In real world conditions, in my experience, this means about 50 km less mileage per tank. The total mileage of the motorcycle on one tank is now 250-300 km, depending on riding style. • Lights: Full LED, including markers, low/high beams, brake lights and turn signals. • Appearance: It's hard to describe anything specific here, but overall the design of the bike has become much closer to the CBR1000RR Fireblade due to the dual headlights and fairing shape. In addition, the design of the wheel rims has changed. • Overall weight: the motorcycle is lighter by 6 kg, the total weight is 207 kg. As you can see, the updates are very serious, which work perfectly together with each other, leaving just a wonderful impression of the motorcycle - more about impressions, in fact, later.

Impression

I was lucky because... I arrived to pick up a new motorcycle on an old bike, spent about 30 minutes filling out the paperwork and left on a new one. Many things were felt right away, right on the heels of it - it’s amazing that changing just one letter in the name and small improvements here and there can overall give such strong changes. The strongest impressions after 500 km:

Controllability

I don’t know what had the biggest effect: a slight change in the seating position, a new suspension, or less weight, but the motorcycle steers amazingly fun and easy, diving into turns with abandon, and just as easily and playfully shifts from one side to the other. It’s very difficult to describe in words, but I had the feeling that I had switched from a huge, clumsy sports tourist to a lightweight naked bike - I felt the difference so much. Here, however, it is worth noting that the tires on the previous bike were already quite worn out after 12,000 km, while the new motorcycle has fresh new tires. True, the manufacturer and model of tires remained the same: Dunlop SportMax.

Engine and gearbox

I can’t say that a difference of 5 horsepower is felt, especially now when the motorcycle is being run-in. Overall, the engine feels just as smooth and effortless in the low end, with a nice bassy sound. The gearbox, by the way, feels a little clearer - but perhaps this is some kind of subjective effect of self-deception; I didn't have any complaints about the last box either.

Appearance

The motorcycle began to look more aggressive, mainly due to the double slanted headlights and the new shape of the fairing. The matte black color with light red accents looks very stylish (I saw a motorcycle in red in person, and... not my thing at all). In addition - subjectively - the motorcycle began to feel much narrower - this can be seen both externally and when sitting on it. This was probably influenced by the same new plastic and a gas tank that was reduced by almost two liters. The new instrumentation is especially pleasing - it is perfectly readable both day and night, finally looks modern, and (hurray!) shows the current gear.

Landing

To be honest, I (186 cm tall and 95 kg weight) did not feel a strong difference in the footpegs and clip-ons offset by a few millimeters; perhaps a shorter and lighter rider would have better noticed the difference. However, the saddle has become much more comfortable - it is more comfortable, has a more convenient shape and is made of some rough material - accordingly, the butt in, for example, jeans has begun to slide much less. Additionally, by reshaping the gas tank, the bike's frame now has room for additional thigh-hugging panels. The driver and passenger seats are now separate, providing a slightly more pronounced “step” between them when you move your torso and butt back for a sportier, lower seating position, such as on the autobahn.

Subjective disadvantages

Where would we be without them? Like last time, this section is written with an eye to the current mileage (a little more than 500 km) and the active break-in mode - I try not to increase the speed above 6 thousand, and also avoid sharp acceleration and braking. • The position of the right foot on the footrest raises some questions. It may take some getting used to, but during active skating, the heel moves back strongly, protrudes beyond the guard and rests against the pendulum - thereby forcing the right leg to walk a little in turns in time with the work of the pendulum. Perhaps you need to get used to it and watch how your right leg stands. • Despite the modern instrument panel and technology, the 2022 motorcycle still does not have a single standard USB port. Yes, I understand that this is still a sportbike and not a cruiser or a tourist, but nevertheless, they could at least put it under the saddle or take it out near the dashboard. However, this drawback is easily solved (and has already been solved). • The mirrors still lack reach. • The button to turn off the traction control is located on a small lever under the index finger (where the high beam blinking lever is located on other motorcycles). A very strange decision. • In general, the generally poor ergonomics of the buttons on the left clip-on remained virtually unchanged. The horn is located just as far away and inconveniently, the high beam and blinker are on the rocker button on top.

Conclusion

The motorcycle turned out to be very interesting, both externally and technically. This is an excellent sportbike for every day, which allows you to ride from home to work on a good day without bothering yourself with shrimp landing, and also actively ride along mountain serpentines on weekends.

I hope that my impressions (and comparisons in hot pursuit with the previous motorcycle) were interesting and will help someone make a choice in favor (or vice versa, why not?) of the new Honda.

I will be happy to answer your questions in the comments or private messages.

Take care of yourself!
