Last fall, near St. Petersburg, more than 50 ATV riders took to the start line at the “Day of the ATV” country cross. The fact that the Can-Am Outlander 800 climbed to first place in the final table surprised few people. And the Suzuki KingQuad 700 logically stood on the second step. But the third place was taken by an ATV, the brand of which somewhat puzzled the ATV luminaries.
On the nameplate of the false radiator grille and in the final protocol sheet it was written AVM 500. Which meant - an ATV with an engine with a displacement of 500 cubic meters, assembled in the Jejiang province, at the CFMOTO plant, China. Being a Chinese ATV must not be easy. A Nike sneaker is familiar, a Xerox printer is normal, an iPod itself has no idea where it was assembled... I wasn’t too lazy and looked at where my fancy Sony VAIO laptop was made. It turns out that he is related to the AVM 500... True, they don’t look at Sony with such a mixture of surprise (price), distrust (quality) and surprise again (looks like the real thing). Probably because my laptop costs more than in its historical homeland... So, our relative is practically a copy of the Yamaha Grizzly 660, only the engine is a little weaker, the ATV itself is a little heavier, but they are very similar. A buddy of mine has an Arctic Cat 500, a Yamaha Grizzly 660 and an ABM 500 in his garage. He claims that when the latter two are side by side, there is no difference in the wishbone suspensions. I forgot to ask, have you thought about buying spare parts for the Grizzly from AVM dealers? Definitely savings... The AVM weighs 337 kilograms including fuel and battery. Compared to this, the Grizzly is, of course, prettier - 272 kg, although the weight indicated is dry. How much allowance will we make for the liquid? Well, let it be 20 kg... Then the difference is no longer so critical - 45 kg. Let's look at our classmates and see how they are doing with excess weight... The “dry” Arctic Cat 500 weighs 310 kg, the Polaris Sportsman 500 pulls 324 kg, and its two-seater “brother” in the X2 version weighs 362 kilograms. By the way, the two-seat version of the AVM 500-A differs from the single-seat version by only 3 kilograms. That is, by and large, the AVM 500 does not stand out from the overall picture. Engine. This is the most important unit of an ATV, because there is no sadder picture than a vehicle dying in a swamp. The most important thing is that the quad must start. Here the manufacturer CFMOTO should be fine. They installed their single-cylinder engine under the designation CF188 on the first prototype back in 2003. In 2004, the engine received European and then American homologation. The CF188 engine is simple and reliable - four-stroke, 493 cc, one cylinder, four valves, liquid cooling. Power 32 horsepower.
If you do marketing by power, then Arctic Cat has 32 hp. for the 500th engine, Polaris claims differently, from 38 to 40 for the same engine, Grizzly has a creditable 42, well, the volume is 660 (!). We still see the real picture - normal power for a normal engine, if this is worth talking about at all, because there are few honest numbers and the only truth is in the swamp... If the quad has a lever suspension and its travel is more than 17 centimeters, this gives the right to really crawl around off-road and not to let out fountains of mud, hanging on the continuous beam of the rear axle. The AVM 500 has a front travel of 170 mm and a rear travel of 225 mm. I won’t bore you with comparisons; as I already said, these are normal numbers. If you know how to climb through swamps, then you won’t need a winch. Moreover, the wheel arches, in your opinion, allow you to replace the standard tires (25th) with a larger size. I think the 27s will stand up normally, and it will be more interesting to knead the mud. And the winch, by the way, which comes as standard, does not cause any complaints in the swamp. It pulls just like the Warn, maybe just a little slower... The automatic transmission control is purely Yamaha. And the same toggle flag that opens the front differential lock button. It’s convenient for “Yamahaphiles” - they’re used to it. It’s interesting for the “Canadians” - they don’t have a button (visco clutch), but Kawasaki owners will be unhappy - what other button? (they have a lever under the left hand like a motorcycle clutch).
On forest paths, the 32 horses of the AVM 500 work out their “oats” to the fullest. It seems that the Chinese didn’t lie about the power... If the rider’s weight is 70 - 80 kg, then there is no need to touch the standard suspension settings - you can jump a little, it won’t hurt. More respectable guys will have to tighten it up a little. There are no complaints about the suspension. There are complaints about the plastic... The plastic of the body kit is normal - bright, high quality. It looks like it should be prickly, but the people who ride these quads say that they are normal, without question. Questions about the dark plastic of the running boards. So it breaks, on logs, on stones... And people simply make aluminum or steel protection for it, from below... It’s not interesting to talk about the price from the perspective of “one quad for the price of two”, it’s like about the Volga - 17 cars for the price of a Mercedes " The topic is different: for any normal rider to arrive after a ride with torn mudguards, a bent kangaroo, broken wings or a singed belt - this is normal. A quadric is not taken for contemplation... So, the AVM 500 is interesting because it only requires half the budget for a real quad. But the rest of the half doesn’t need to be clamped, but needs to be invested in good wheels, 27-gauge tires, protection, panniers, a navigator, a set of walkie-talkies, good equipment... And go for a ride fully prepared! Everyone's attitude towards China is purely personal. And subjective. Me too. I personally don’t care where the ATV is made. Today, only the Minsk refrigerator is made in Minsk... The main thing for me is that the quad drives normally, and the dealer, if necessary, promptly corrects it after each swamp. And then we have harmony...
