Do you need a license to own a pit bike? Can you drive it on the roads and in the fields? How much is the fine?

The times when a pit bike was considered a frivolous piece of equipment for teenagers are long gone. Modern models can accelerate to 100 km/h, move over any rough terrain and work properly regardless of weather and climatic conditions.

Pit bikes have many advantages

These small mini-motorcycles, as it turned out in practice, have significant advantages. One of the main ones is accessibility. There is a large selection of pit bikes on the market for a wide variety of wallets. If you wish, you can find a model for both 40 and 200 thousand rubles.

The second advantage of this type of motorcycle is ease of control. This also includes simplicity and low cost of maintenance, excellent tuning and modernization potential.

To drive a pit bike in our country, you do not need to obtain a driver’s license or obtain a PTS. It is not required to register with the traffic police. Pit bikes belong to the category of sports equipment and can be used by people of any age. The right to use the equipment is confirmed by a purchase and sale agreement, which must include the owner’s passport details and VIN number.

Despite the fact that pit bikes first appeared in California (USA), mass demand for them emerged in China. It is there that 95% of this equipment is produced today. The choice of pit bikes from Chinese manufacturers is truly huge. However, before purchasing, you need to decide not only on the country of production, but also on a number of other criteria that will allow you to choose the optimal model for driving over rough terrain or a prepared route.

Characteristics of pit bikes

A pit bike motorcycle has many advantages. First of all, it is the size and weight, thanks to which it is easy to transport. Also, this type of motorcycle is quite accessible to both children and adults. After all, despite its low weight, it is capable of supporting a person weighing up to 130 kg. In addition, it is relatively safe for beginner motorcyclists and is perfect as a first motorcycle, especially when it comes to children. Its small dimensions, along with a fairly powerful engine, allow you to learn how to ride a motorcycle as well as possible, feel every little detail in its operation, learn its behavior on different surfaces, and also form an impression of larger motorcycles and their power. It is worth saying that pricing policy also plays an important role.

Pitbike. How many cubes

Depending on the purpose of the pit bike, its power also varies. In general, pit bikes can be divided into three groups:

  1. Low-power. Motorcycles belonging to this group have an engine capacity from 50 to 110 cubic meters. They are well suited for novice motorcyclists, children or beginners in motorsports.
  2. Medium power. This class includes those equipped with an engine capacity of 125 to 140 cc. They are designed for both teenagers and adults.
  3. Powerful. They are already considered a serious technique, intended not only for participation in races, but also for performing various tricks. The engine capacity of powerful pit bikes is 160 cubic meters. A non-professional should not buy such equipment.

At the same time, you shouldn’t expect great speed even from the most powerful motorcycle of this type. The maximum speed of a pit bike is no more than 100 km/h. Therefore, it won’t be possible to “grip” on it.

BSE engines are easy to maintain and are installed so that modules can be changed without completely removing the engine. This is a plus, but the lack of an electronic starter is a minus, especially if you stall in the middle of a race. In addition, you will have to frequently adjust the carburetor, and this also requires certain knowledge.

  • Reinforced rims on wheels
  • Suitable for adult riders

Do you need a license for a pit bike? - no, we don’t need it!

This question worries many people, especially parents who are planning to make a serious purchase for their child. So, such a motorcycle belongs to sports equipment. This means that it is not intended for driving on public roads, and therefore does not undergo any registration with the traffic police. Therefore, a pit bike cannot have a title or license plates. Considering all of the above, a pit bike license is also not needed.

But despite this, nowadays you can often see a mini-motorcycle riding along the city streets. It is very popular among couriers and postmen who need to get to a certain place in a very short period of time. And this type of motorcycle allows you to quickly solve this problem due to its miniature dimensions and excellent maneuverability. Therefore, although you don’t need a license for it, it’s better to know the traffic rules for your own safety.

The power of the engine installed here is 9 horsepower, and this is the norm even with a larger volume. This is the norm for such equipment, and the advantages also include an electronic starter, which significantly simplifies operation.

The best pit bikes

Of course, before any purchase, absolutely every person thinks about its quality and characteristics. Pit bikes are no exception to this. Naturally, you want to buy the best mini-motorcycle possible. But which one is he, the best? Of course, the best one will be the one that the person assembled himself, taking into account all the needs and wishes. However, this is not for everyone. Therefore, most people prefer to buy a ready-made mini-motorcycle rather than bother with assembling it in the garage.

First of all, before purchasing a mini-motorcycle, you should decide on its purpose - whether it is being purchased for professional sports, for learning to ride a motorcycle, or for various tricks and entertainment. The only indisputable fact in any of the three options is that you will get 100% pleasure from riding a pit bike.

If we talk about the company and country of manufacture, then Japanese-made pit bikes are considered the best. The leaders here are four companies - Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki. However, despite this, Chinese manufacturers are no less popular, among which it is worth mentioning Kayo, Irbis, BSE, Pitsterpro, etc. Not least occupied by the domestic manufacturer of pit bikes - Irbis. In general, motorcycles of the same class differ little from each other in their configuration. The only difference is the quality of the parts. Well, only the owner can decide which small iron horse is the best for certain purposes. As they say, to each his own.

In conclusion, it is worth saying that this motorcycle is a small, very comfortable, versatile motorcycle designed for off-road racing, which is capable of giving a sea of vivid impressions and unforgettable sensations to its owner from the first minute of riding it.

Selection by brand

Despite the fact that pit bikes appeared in the USA and the term itself also originated there, now they are produced mainly in Asia and a little in Europe.

Let us briefly list the popular manufacturers:

  1. Kayo. One of the most famous brands of pit bikes, launched in the 2000s. His equipment does not particularly stand out: it is simple, reliable and cheap, and since it is widespread in Russia, it is also easy to maintain (parts are easy to find, as are repairmen).
  2. YCF. A young French brand with a rather large range of models, mainly in the middle price segment. The reviews do not complain about quality, but in our country these pit bikes are poorly represented.
  3. BSE. Another large Chinese brand founded in 2002. Closest competitor to Kayo. It has a large assortment of pit bikes of different sizes and capacities, and also produces models with a title for highways. It is already quite widely known in Russia and has every chance of breaking into the top sales of pit bikes (despite the fact that it started selling here later than Kayo).
  4. Progasi. The Spanish brand, which appeared several years ago, assembles its equipment in China. He approaches design very responsibly; he selects components, if not the best, then some of them. The downsides are the above-average price tag, a small number of models, the absence (possibly temporary) of models with PTS, and very poor distribution in the Russian Federation.
  5. Motoland. Not a manufacturer, but a distributor: under this brand various motorcycles from different Chinese and Taiwanese factories are sold. It has been operating since the mid-2000s, but pit bikes with this logo appeared in our country not so long ago. They are inexpensive and the selection is average. The disadvantages are the same as those of other models that have recently appeared in the Russian Federation: they are not sold everywhere, and they are not easy to service.

Previously, pit bikes were produced by others, including more well-known brands like Yamaha and Kawasaki. They can be found on sale secondhand. You can also see other brands, mainly from China - for example, BRZ, Wels, Apollo. They are not sold everywhere and they are not very well known here, so we present these names just so that you are aware of the approximate assortment.

Top 3. KAYO Basic YX140

Rating (2021): 4.53

-quality balancing The lightest possible pit bike, using a complex air suspension and driven by a 140 cc engine. At the end of the day, you get the feeling that you are driving a model with much more power and a volume of at least 250 cubic meters.

  • Characteristics

    Average price: 85,000 rub.

  • Country: Japan (manufactured in China)
  • Engine capacity: 140 cc
  • Power (hp): 9
  • Wheel size: 14×12 inches
  • Start: electric starter
  • Box: mechanics
  • Weight (kg): 65

If you are planning to buy a pit bike not for simple “rides” outside the city, but for use on a cross-country track, be sure to pay attention to this model, which was developed specifically for sports use. There is a 9-horsepower 140 cc engine installed here and, as they write in the reviews, it feels like a 250 cc engine. It's all about the extremely light weight and complex air suspension. But the main advantage here is the high build quality, which allows us to classify this bike as professional. It can easily withstand falls from heights and can be quickly repaired without the need for complete disassembly. In addition, there is a double cooling system installed here.

Advantages and disadvantages

  • Feeling like a 250cc bike
  • Lightweight design
  • Professional appointment
  • Experience required to manage
  • Manufacturing defects are common

Top 4. BSE Pro 150

Rating (2021): 4.33

Model with a forced engine The power of the engine installed here is comparable to 250 cc engines. This was achieved thanks to the factory boost of the piston system.

  • Characteristics

    Average price: 130,000 rub.

  • Country: China
  • Engine capacity: 150 cc
  • Power (hp): 12
  • Wheel size: 14×12 inches
  • Launch: kickstarter
  • Box: mechanics
  • Weight (kg): 70

This is the most expensive bike in the ranking, and this is not surprising, given its quality, technical and driving characteristics. The engine capacity here is 150 cubic meters with an output power of over 12 horsepower. A real monster that can cope with the most severe off-road conditions. At the same time, the bike is as light and fast as possible. The model has the PRO insert in the name, and this is for a reason. The fact is that the bike is equipped with a special forced engine, which significantly increases the driving characteristics. By the way, hence the rather high cost. Simply put, this is equipment for sports competitions or training, and it makes no sense to buy it for regular rides. And the price is steep.

Advantages and disadvantages

  • Forced motor
  • Sports class
  • Lightweight model
  • Expensive pit bike
  • Launch only from kickstarter

What is the scope of application?

Purchasing a pit bike is important for those who want to move around the city without difficulty avoiding traffic jams. That is why this technique is especially loved by couriers who deliver correspondence, goods, and food. The speed of order fulfillment is very high, and the cost of gasoline is minimal.

The fact that a pit bike is intended for only one person does not greatly hinder such workers, or even athletes participating in motocross. However, it should be taken into account that it is problematic to use transport in snow and ice, but in cities where, as a rule, the roads are cleaned and treated, problems should not arise.

The first motorcycle for my uncle at 32 years old, and which one did I choose?

I decided to make my first post. The purpose of this opus is to talk about the agony of choosing the FIRST

motorcycle for my uncle at
32 years old
. What, how, why and how much!

So, I'm soon 32 years old

, and I decided to give myself a small present. As a child, like most boys, I wanted something with two wheels and a motor. But somehow it didn’t work out, my dad forbade it, and apparently I didn’t really want to.

So what do we have? There are no licenses of category A, there are no M licenses or anything else. There is only V. For a moped you already need at least M, but up to 50 cubic meters it seems that V will do, but I’m not sure.

I started browsing message boards, created a search, and received notifications by email. I was interested in the price range up to 30,000 rubles, ideally even cheaper, because the house is being renovated, my wife and I sleep on the sofa, and she, my beloved woman, won’t understand why the hell I locked a TYRCHIK home instead of a bed.

What were the options anyway?

Scooters

I dismissed it right away, I wasn’t in the mood for them. Although here is a small disclaimer, a photo of mine, which I later bought for cheap. But more on that later.

I looked through the ads for a month and eventually found what I just bought. According to legend, the PITbike was bought a month ago for a nephew who suddenly left for his historical homeland in Israel. The legend is so-so, but that’s not the main thing, I can come up with something awesome myself. According to the receipts, Pete was indeed purchased a month ago, in a store in my city, and in appearance he was like new.

For example, if you compare it with how it looks now, in two weeks of riding, I’ve already dropped it a couple of times. And scratches appeared on the paint of the metal, and the plastic in the places where the stickers were placed is no longer so glamorous.

Before purchasing, I looked for advice on motorcycle forums. I’ll say right away that there may be adequate advice, but the advice is not always useful. I clearly knew that I wanted to try, I didn’t have any thoughts about immediately buying a 250cc Suzuki and trying to get it.

I’ll tell you what it is from the point of view of emotions and a little modest experience of owning a PITbike.

The weight of the PITbike is 67 kg, but it doesn’t look like it. It starts with an electric starter, or kickstarter (you pull it with your foot). It can reach a speed of 80 km per hour if the wind is fair and coming from a hill. I haven’t tried the maximum speed myself, this is from YouTube. My maximum speed according to GPS is 55 km/h. Well, this is not a vehicle that needs to be driven quickly and far. 125 cubic meters, synthetic oil, replacement is measured in tanks. That is, after 30 tanks I have an oil change. I skated 2 tanks, the tank is 3.7 liters. Lasts a long time.

Then, as some wrote, I got tired of him. Or rather, it’s not like that, it’s become too small for me. And I wanted a 250 cc

, and started selling this one and looking for a Chinese one with a larger cube. I sold this one without loss in price, and quite quickly, the father took it to his son.

I told my wife that I was going to get some snacks, I found an ad for the cheapest price, threw off a little more, and went to pick up a scooter on the bus. This miracle looked like this! By the way, it’s above in the photo, so I’ll paste the video here.

Since I don’t have a license of category M, I also don’t have a license of category A, I drove through the fields, where, surprisingly, I didn’t even meet a single mushroom picker! Fortunately, I studied all the trails while still on the pit, so in just over an hour I covered about 30 km of off-road and mushroom paths. True, I got lost twice, once I came to a place where you can only drive a cross-country vehicle, and this stool is “not good at all.”

The dog approved, using GPS we found out that the dog had grown up and got a little lazy after two weeks without running, and dropped its maximum speed from 40 km/h to 35 km/h

.

Based on the results of the trip, the scooter showed mixed results. The red zone starts at 45 km per hour, but since there is a piston with 72 cubic meters, and the speedometer is under 50, I accelerated it to 55. In the field, it goes 50 km per hour along the knurled line.

Although this thing was perfect for my needs. But I have few needs regarding this technology. Walk the dog in the field, drive across the field to your parents’ dacha, and to the local store, which is also located in the field. That is, there are no additional roads (public roads). I don’t even ride a bike on the road, damn it)))

A couple more days passed. The dog has already gotten used to the idea that it either runs actively or chases birds in the grass. It’s already cold, the bike went to a warm garage. But my hands are itching.

What can I say, the jalopy drives. I agreed for 23,000 rubles

for THIS))) We could have waited a little longer, they would have thrown it off again, but for some reason I wanted to poke it with a multimeter and turn the nuts.

Our equipment is as follows (Stels Flex 250 cubic meters):

— no rear brake pads and no brake fluid in the reservoir

— no instrument panel and plastic around the headlights

In this regard, it was bought secondhand, but new on paper Tyumen. In general, I was surprised, for some reason in stores now there is only China, and for such a battery they ask for 2,000 rubles. I decided to support the domestic manufacturer. In the photo I'm charging.

Now this device was brought straight to my house, without a battery or the opportunity to check the starter. Then on the second day I drove with him here, learned to start it from the pushrod, well, in general I was delighted. I ran around the area, smiling from ear to ear, here the guys have cars for 3-4 lemons, but damn, even they were interested in how it would end!

This pile of Chinese iron with plastic in places, without an instrument panel and traces of rough use, gave me something that I did not realize in childhood. It got me there. A sort of Chinese JAVA))

But on day 3

, I already sold it. And Flex continued to zeher. One person came to look, I showed him, started it for half a kopeck, he said that he had gone to get money, and disappeared. I don’t know, maybe he’s still looking.

But that’s not the point, I closed the gas tap. And when another person came to look in the evening, I didn’t push him, we rushed around for about 30 minutes, he pushed me, but it didn’t work at all. I’m a damn honest dude, I live by the rules, treat others the way you want them to treat you. I didn’t warm it up with a special tool to show that it starts even when cold. Therefore, I filmed another video at the request of another buyer.

Yesterday I went for a drive and recorded a video, but today it’s already +7 outside and I don’t even want to go out there. But maybe in the evening I’ll go to my parents’ dacha! Of course I look crazy on it, but I don’t care))

I hope that this POST will be useful to someone.

Since opinions on the forums vary, some advise immediately a liter and go on the highway without a license, the MOST important thing is to be careful (this is a quote, I am against it), someone immediately Jebel, in order to immediately understand what a cool technique should be. I chose the Chinese, but we'll see.

Which manufacturer should you choose?

There is a widespread stereotype that Chinese equipment is not of particularly high quality. However, the practice of shopping in the Sport Extreme online store debunks this myth. The catalog on the website contains pit bikes from well-known Chinese brands BSE and Motoland, which have proven themselves well both in their homeland and in Europe and Russia.

Suffice it to remember that Chinese mini-bikes are one of the oldest on the market; the manufacturer knows a lot and has the necessary production capabilities. Moreover, 99.9% of all pit bikes today are manufactured or assembled in China. Another undoubted advantage is the reasonable cost of such motor vehicles.

You can order a pit bike with a guarantee and delivery throughout Russia on the website of the Sport Extreme motor equipment center online. Get advice on your choice from online store specialists by calling +7 (4822) 65-65-03.
