The history of the Canadian engineering company Bombardier began in 1942. The Quebec company was originally involved in the production of snowmobiles, and in the 1980s also began producing aircraft. Currently, Bombardier is a leading manufacturer of aircraft and railway equipment.
In 2003, BRP spun off from a large concern and began to specialize in all-terrain vehicles. In addition to snowmobiles, the manufacturer also includes ATVs and jet skis. As for snowmobiles, the manufacturer produces two brands of tracks - Ski-Doo and Lynx. They are distinguished by exceptional quality and reliability.
The Tundra 550 snowmobile, despite its light weight, belongs to the utilitarian type. The bike is considered the most budget-friendly of all that the Quebec company produces. Thanks to this, these snowmobile tracks are very popular among residents of our country. This is still the same BRP, only cheaper.
Appearance and equipment
Ski-Doo Tundra 550 snowmobiles are produced in only one color - the brand's signature black and yellow color. The body lines also remain unchanged and recognizable. There is also a neat narrowed “nose”, a predatory “cut” of the headlights and dynamically shaped air outlet openings.
The snowmobile's equipment is as complete as possible. There's a dual starter (manual and electric), comfortable curved steel handlebar grips, a 10-inch windshield and a REV-XP seat. All Tundra series vehicles are equipped with hydraulic brake and reverse.
Also included with the SkiDoo Tundra LT 550 F are:
- heated handles;

Owner reviews
- Alex84: I have owned a Ski-Doo Tundra LT 550 F for almost 5 years. For me, the choice in favor of this snowmobile was due to several reasons. I was going to ride alone or with my son; I planned to carry a small load on the sled (100 kg, maximum 150 kg), so a powerful and expensive device was not needed. A narrow gooseneck and a fairly powerful engine made it possible to drive a little. For driving across the field and infrequent trips to the forest for hunting, this snowmobile should have been enough, and the light weight simplified the process of pulling it out of the snow captivity. In the end, I got it right with the purchase. In addition to the above advantages, the Tundra LT 550 F also turned out to be a very reliable car. I continue to use the device and do not plan to sell it.
- Russian: Ski-Doo Tundra LT 550 F is a decent snowmobile. For a beginner it will be the best option. Maneuverable and playful, but at the same time easy to control. I usually ride it alone, but the snowmobile carries two people no less confidently. The load also carries well. The maximum load was as follows: things, provisions, two people on a snowmobile and two on a homemade foam. The Tundra LT 550 F coped with the task perfectly, although the speed was low. One full tank is enough for almost 100 km (without heavy load). There have been no serious bugs yet, only positive impressions. The only downside is high fuel consumption.
- Murmansk: I went to the BRP showroom for a completely different model, but the seller convinced me that I didn’t need anything else besides the Tundra 550. In the end, I chose this snowmobile and was not disappointed. In terms of price, the snowflake was one of the cheapest, but in terms of cross-country ability, it is an absolute cosmos, you can get it from anywhere. Everything is extremely simple and convenient to manage. From time to time I ride with a neighbor who has a Yamaha Aventura. What I want to say is that I had to push him out 7-8 times, but I never planted mine. The only thing I don’t like about my snowman is that it smokes like a steam locomotive, and my clothes stink for a long time after a trip. If I change the Tundra 550, it will only be for a 4-stroke snowmobile.
- Victor: The Ski-Doo Tundra 550F is a completely normal snowmobile, but it has a lot of disadvantages. I have been using the technique for 5 years and have managed to study it thoroughly. It is not suitable for serious work because it is quite weak. It doesn't go well in deep snow, but it consumes a lot of gasoline. The dashboard has a minimal number of sensors. There are no complaints about the quality of the snowmobile (everything is assembled perfectly, the components are reliable), but getting to the engine and main elements is difficult. It is impossible to carry out repairs and maintenance of the Ski-Doo Tundra 550F yourself; everything must be done through a dealer, which is quite expensive. The model is quite controversial, but it is definitely not inferior to domestic snowmobiles.
Ski extensions for snowmobile BRP Tundra lt550: to buy or not
On the forums, almost all Ski Doo Tundra owners write that skis only spoil the handling of the LT550, but this is far from the case. They worsen only for rides, but for hunting, fishing and long-distance driving they only improve the behavior of the snowmobile in deep snow. Low-speed handling in deep and loose conditions is the same, and stability is much better. Forgives many mistakes (does not fall on its side). A ski in a meter of snow sinks 5 cm, counter-steering freely falls on its side, before in a snowstorm, only the ski came off a little straight away on its side and you walk on tacks, now you can freely correct the steering wheel. A visual confirmation of the rear sight, now you can ride while sitting, but before this was simply not possible. I bought 26 cm extensions specifically for the experiment (price 2600 per pair), but now I will never take them off, although I myself like to drive and fool around in the snow.
Adjusting the front suspension of the BRP Scandic 550 snowmobile
The choice of the optimal combination of suspension parameters is determined by the load of the snowmobile, the weight of the driver, the characteristics of the individual driving style and subjective preferences, the speed limit and the condition of the track.
Before adjusting the suspension, do the following:
- Stop the snowmobile in a safe place;
- Remove the safety cord cap from the contact device;
- Before adjusting the front or rear suspension, make sure the lifting device is secure and stable.
Change one adjustable suspension parameter at a time. For example, after adjusting the front springs, you may need to readjust the center spring. Each step of the suspension adjustment must be verified by a test run on a snowmobile under identical conditions: the track, snow conditions, driving speed, driver position on the seat, etc. must be the same. Perform all adjustments consistently and completely until the desired result is obtained.
Rear suspension setup
- Tape limiter;
- Central spring and shock absorber;
- Rear shock absorber;
- Rear spring preload adjustment cams;
- Suspension extension adjuster;
- Suspension extension spring preload adjuster.
Band stop length
Changing the length of the limiter bands allows you to change the weight placed on the center spring when the snowmobile accelerates and limit the lift of the snowmobile's front suspension. The length of the stop bands also affects the stroke length of the central spring.
Set both strap stops to the same length. After changing the length of the stop bands, you need to check the track tension.
Action | Result |
Increasing the length of tape stops | Reducing ski pressure when accelerating |
Increasing the stroke of the central spring
Improved bump damping | |
Reducing the length of tape stops | Increasing ski pressure when accelerating |
Reducing the stroke of the central spring
Deterioration of bump damping |
When driving in deep snow, it may be necessary to adjust the tape limiter, as well as to change the driver’s position in order to adjust the angle of contact of the caterpillar with the supporting surface. A driver with sufficient knowledge and experience will always be able to choose the most optimal adjustment option, taking into account the condition of the snow cover.
Rear spring preload
The amount of rear spring preload affects the ride comfort of the snowmobile, the driver's seat height, and also helps compensate for the loads that arise when transporting cargo.
In addition, various rear spring preload adjustments allow you to increase or decrease the weight carried by the snowmobile's front suspension. As a result, the pressure of the skis on the supporting surface also increases or decreases. This allows you to improve performance when driving in deep snow, as well as reduce or increase steering effort and thereby improve the handling of the snowmobile.
If, when driving a snowmobile on the most uneven sections of the route, only slight breakdowns of the suspension are observed, it means that the adjustment of the suspension components has been carried out correctly.
Action | Result |
Increase pre-tension | The rear suspension becomes more rigid |
The rear of the snowmobile rises
Improved bump damping | |
Steering effort increases
Reducing pre-tension | Rear suspension becomes softer |
The rear of the snowmobile lowers
Deterioration of bump damping
Steering effort is reduced
Improves snowmobile performance and handling in deep snow |
A typical option for correct adjustment: A - The suspension is extended to full travel; B - The suspension is compressed under the weight of the driver, passenger(s) and cargo; C - Difference between distances “A” and “B”, see table. below.
C, mm | Reason, solution |
50-75 | No adjustment required |
more than 75 | The adjustment is too soft. Increase pretension |
less than 50 | The adjustment is too tight. Reduce pretension |
To increase spring tension, always turn the left adjusting cam clockwise and the right adjusting cam counterclockwise.
The complete process of adjusting the suspension can be found in the operating instructions for the BRP Ski Do VT 550.
