N.B.

This part of the article is in some way a bonus material to its main part.
I did not set out to cover all possible options. After riding a Yamaha YBR 125cc for a season and a half, I came to the conclusion that I wanted a road motorcycle, mainly for country trips (i.e. with a fairing) and preferably with ABS. When you make your choice, try to collect as much information as possible on the models that interest you. The availability of spare parts for certain modifications, their prevalence and generic sores - all this will help you when choosing.

For beginners (125-400cc)

If you have no experience of moving along our roads on any type of car/motor vehicle , then choosing a model is simple and banal - Yamaha YBR 125cc.
It’s better that you get tired of this motorcycle by the middle of the season than that your first season ends before the onset of dank autumn.

When choosing a YBR 125 in the secondary market, it is better to avoid motorcycles produced in 2007-2008. The fact is that motorcycles of these years were equipped with a vacuum carburetor, in which the choke foot was replaced with a rod. The advantage of this solution is the ability to regulate the opening value of the throttle valve when warming up, but such a device has a serious drawback - over time, the ability of the rod to be held in the open position is lost, which leads to spontaneous closure.

To avoid warming up your motorcycle over time with a clothespin, it’s best to exclude motorcycles from these years from your list.

You can find out more about the differences between YBR from different years by searching: Link to Yandex

Kawasaki Ninja 250/300cc

Also suitable for the role of a first motorcycle (provided you have at least experience on a moped or scooter). But there is a rule - everyone drops the first motorcycle. And those units that do not drop are an exception to the rule. With a high degree of probability, you will also fall, even if out of the blue, forgetting about the step. Therefore, if you are planning to start with this motorcycle, be mentally and financially prepared for plastic repairs. And don’t be upset when you fix it - this is an important stage in becoming a motorcyclist.

If you already have road, but not motorcycle, experience (cow bikes are included here)

The choice is somewhat richer - this is not only the Ninja 250-300 (from spring 2013) cc from Kawasaki, but also the Japanese 400tk.

Depending on finances and preferences, you can purchase either a heavily used 400t (golden hands, a workshop and tools for maintenance are required), or a completely fresh Honda CB-400 (there are options even with ABS) or a Yamaha XJR 400, and sometimes a Suzuki SV-400. However, the cost of a new 400cc is close to the cost of a 600cc of comparable years, and their spare parts supply, to put it mildly, is unimportant.

Many articles and reviews have been written about the characteristics of motorcycles. You can find information about the model you like on the Internet. The more information you collect about the bike you like, the more likely you are to get exactly what you want.

I will once again highlight several of the most popular models.
Honda CB-400

Legendary sea bream.
Where would we be without her? It’s better to buy this motorcycle in the fall for 80-100 thousand, invest another 40-50 thousand and finish it over the winter. A live sea bream usually doesn’t cost less than 150 thousand, but it’s expensive because... you will probably still have to invest at least another 10k. This is the most popular 400 in our country and that is why most often there are no problems with spare parts for it, however, for the most part these are used spare parts from broken motorcycles. Since finding a live seabird for humane money is very problematic (how many times the mileage was intentionally changed or the broken tidy was replaced on many of them - only God knows), I would still advise you to pay attention to the above-described Ninja 250cc.

Suzuki SV-400

An interesting model and it will definitely be on your list.
In addition to such usual nuances for 400tok as age and inflated cost, the SV also has a couple of birth sores.

The model has a two-cylinder V-engine, the weak point of which is the crankshaft (or rather, oil starvation and its consequences for the knee). The crankshaft is killed in an elementary way - they screwed it up (this 400 is great at this), didn’t keep an eye on the oil level (finding a used SV that won’t eat it up is very problematic), dropped it and the engine ran on its side for a long time, etc.

For those who love the classics, there is a naked version with handlebars, and for beginner riders there is an S version with a fairing and clip-ons. If you really want to, you can install additional plastic on the S version and get a completely bonneted version.

Remember, this banter appeared for a reason:

The advantages of the SV 400 are excellent low-end traction and low weight. This is one of the easiest and quickest scabies on our market.

Most often they ask for a high price for an esveshka and, adding, you can take the 650cc version (if experience and head allow it). My older brother still has the same illnesses, they just occur a little less frequently. However, more about it below.

Yamaha XJR 400

A classmate of the Seabihi from Yamaha, it is equipped with an air-oil-cooled engine. According to reviews, the engine is a little meaner and the brakes are stronger, however, breakdowns occur more often, and the motorcycle is not the most popular.

Suzuki Bandit 400

Similar to the CB-400, but angrier.
The device is still for those who know how to maintain equipment and get a kick out of it. The model is quite old, with spare parts as usual. There are significantly fewer of them on the secondary market than the same CB-400. There are also sports 400s, for example: Kawasaki ZXR 400, Kawasaki ZZR400 or Honda CBR 400 . Without going into too much detail, most older Japanese 400s will have issues with parts and/or reliability. Choosing a living device without qualified help will be very problematic, and the likelihood that you will have to repair it at least once a season is very high.

And at the same time, there are very, very well-maintained options for reasonable money. He who seeks will find.

There is also a Suzuki Impulse 400 , but this is already from the 250cc Bandit category. A very rare motorcycle, there are simply no spare parts for it.

For more experienced (600-650cc)

After a season or two spent behind the wheel of a 125-400cc motorcycle, many pilots think that the motorcycle “doesn’t work” and it’s time to increase the capacity.

Below is information on some of the possible options.

It is traditionally believed that Honda and reliability are synonymous words, whether to believe it or not is a matter of choice, but the gearbox is really cool.

Honda F4i

It has a powerful injection engine, very comfortable clip-ons (compared to the same SV 650), reliable, very light and quite low in height.

Finding a live copy for reasonable money is problematic, the model is old and out of production. In recent years, production has been resumed, but based on the Hornet, not the CBR.

It makes sense to order this model from Europe or the USA, and also consider already fitted options - there is a better chance of finding a live motorcycle.

There is an early version of the F4i labeled “Sport”. Distinctive features of this modification are a separate seat and the absence of a central footrest.

There is no such useful thing as abs for beginners. Real mileage most often starts from 30,000 keme, and in the spring of 2013 the price tag for a live device will most likely start from 230,000 rubles.

The motorcycle will quickly lose value, and then it will be difficult to sell a device with a mileage of 50-60k keme (to be honest and not twist it), except perhaps to stunters and at a different price.

Honda CB-600 Hornet

It is likely that this is the kind of motorcycle you have dreamed of all your life. At the same time, it cannot be called a light motorcycle, and the seat height will be most comfortable for people over 175cm tall.

The faired S version available on the market is quite old. The model has a conventional fork with a 41 mm stay diameter. Most people agree that the fork is soft, which is why the Hornet is “weak in the front end.”

HONDA motorcycles are traditionally one of the most expensive, which also affects their cost on the secondary market.

The reality is that the cost of a fuel-injected SV-650 or FZ6 is comparable to the cost of an older, carbureted Hornet.

Despite all the praises for Honda’s reliability, it’s worth remembering that the motorcycle is bought second-hand, and you don’t know how it was treated before you, but anyone can be killed.

Honda CBF-600S

Tourist for beginners.

The peculiarity of the model is the presence of ABS as standard, a height-adjustable saddle, which is very important for people under 170 cm in height, and also an adjustable windshield.

This is a very heavy motorcycle. When getting to know him, try to roll him around with your arms/legs; after all, you’ll have to put him in the garage, and sometimes you’ll have to turn around on the spot.

The old version, as usual, is carb, and the new one is injection (since the end of 2007).

Our market offers the S version with a fairing, but there is also a naked version.

The analogue of this model from Yamaha is the XJ6. Each model has its own advantages. For example, the XJ6 is lighter than the CBF 600, but ABS is optional.

Suzuki SV-650

A good device as a next motorcycle, it “drives itself” due to the fact that the V-twin engine pulls from the bottom.
There are two generations of SV and three versions of each: naked, faired, hooded. The pictures above show the second generation.

Production of the second (redesigned, injection) began in 2003. However, already in 2004, the model was further refined and, for example, the driver’s seat from 2003 is only suitable for 2003.

In 2007, the model was further refined - a second spark plug was added to each cylinder, and optional ABS also appeared.

Regardless of the generation, the model has its own characteristics such as: 1) Weak brakes 2) Weak fork 3) Problem with oil starvation and, as a result, death of the crankshaft

One of the nuances is that the fuel level indicator is designed in the form of a light bulb; when it lights up, it’s time to look for a gas station.

I would recommend looking at the second generation, it is fuel-injected and there is a chance to find it with ABS, although the appearance is not for everyone. In my opinion, the chance of getting on a motorcycle with a dying crankshaft is much higher for the first generation than for the second, due to age.

The version with clip-ons has a specific fit and is uncomfortable for many; before purchasing, try sitting on it for 10-15 minutes (while you communicate with the seller), or even better, take a circle around the yards if the owner allows it.

The SV has a fairly soft rear shock. Moreover, if you tighten it, then for a person with a height of about 170 cm, the motorcycle may already turn out to be a little tall, although in the loose version it was “just right”.

The height problem can be solved with the TRW Lucas Lowering Kit, but this is quite expensive.

Finding a live SV in good condition and with low mileage is a very difficult task. If you add ABS to the list, then it’s very, very good.

Advice: Travel first and see the options for yourself. If you suddenly like one, grab a knowledgeable friend or forum member and go look at the chassis and listen to the engine.

The ideal option would be if the mechanic is knowledgeable about SV engines. The V-shaped two-cylinder engine is quite noisy, and not everyone can hear the sound of the dying crankshaft. A mistake will be costly.

I personally watched as a man tried to sell a dying SV for fabulous money. As a result, a month later the motorcycle was already hanging on Auto.ru with a “damaged knee”.

Cost is the second serious disadvantage of SV in our market. It is almost impossible to buy a device for adequate money, and this despite the fact that initially the model gained popularity precisely because of its price/quality ratio and was the cheapest in the 600 current series. The situation when SV-650s are sold on forums for two or three years is completely normal, most often it’s a matter of price.

At the same time, there is no point in buying such a motorcycle in order to later sell it significantly cheaper or wait two or three years until a “connoisseur” is found. Therefore, in my opinion, it makes sense to purchase an SV only if its cost is about 160-180 thousand rubles (for the second generation), for the option with ABS you can throw in another 10k.

The SV has a continuation of its model range in the form of the Suzuki Gladius, but in our country it is quite rare.

Suzuki Bandit 600-650

A good country motorcycle, but very heavy.
There are 600cc (old) and 650cc (new) motorcycle models. There are also two versions available on the market - with and without fairing.

The curb weight is about 245 kg, so when you meet him, try to “roll his legs” with him. For pilots with a height of about 170 cm, it will most likely be a bit tall, which, combined with its weight, is very critical. At the same time, the weight of the motorcycle will be very useful on the highway, plus the gears are placed ideally for country trips.

The motorcycle is suitable for tall and strong pilots.

Relatively new vehicles have ABS as an option.

Most likely suitable for large and tall pilots, although sometimes even fragile women ride lowered versions.

Yamaha FZ6 Fazer

The model is currently out of production and there are three varieties.

1. “Classic” 98-horsepower FZ6 2. Still the same classic FZ6, but strangled by a limiter to 78 hp. The conversion to full strength takes about 30 minutes and requires nothing more than pliers or wire cutters. 3. Version S2 with brake calipers from the old R1, instrumentation from the FZ1 and a modified fairing.

Both with and without fairing are available in the market. The “minor” disadvantages of each option include the cost of the original headlight for the naked and the plastic fairing for the S2 version. She's tall.

The last two options, in theory, come with ABS, but personally I have only seen the third one with it (Fazer S2).

One of the birth problems is a weak generator; driving through many kilometers of traffic jams with high beams is difficult for it. The battery of this motorcycle is located not under the seat, but under the tank, which makes its maintenance somewhat more labor-intensive.

There are also American versions of this device on our market. Unlike Europeans, Americans have: • No ABS • No factory immobilizer (i.e. regular keys) • “Buggy” turn signals

Those. the dream of an FZ6 without an immobilizer and with ABS can be immediately discarded.

Why no immobilizer? The fact is that Yamaha has a very specific one. The set of keys consists of one red and two black keys. The red key is the master key by default and only with its help can you flash the black keys in case of a failure (the on-board computer “forgot”/lost the key) or the key is lost. Only two black keys can be stored in the memory of the on-board computer at the same time; it is physically impossible to program a third one.

Those. If you have lost your black key, making a new one will not be difficult. Losing the red key entails either replacing all the locks, which costs a pretty penny (check with the officials for details), or using various tricks, including installing an immobilizer emulator.

Hence the logical advice - do not buy a European version of a motorcycle if it does not have a red key.

The FZ6's weak point is its attractive, lightweight aluminum frame. It is not recommended to place sliders on it; if it falls in the places where they are attached, the frame often bursts with all that follows. Better put the arcs.

For pilots around 170 cm tall, the FZ6 will likely be a little tall. The problem can be solved by playing with the suspension settings or installing a lowering kit for the rear shock absorber.

Some people like it, some don't. The engine of the FZ6 is derated from the R6, which affects its character. Up to 7-8k rpm, the device drives quite phlegmatically, but after that the spirit of the R6 awakens in it, with all that it implies. This engine needs to be turned, it is for those who love and already know how to anneal and steer.

As for the cost, a live FZ6 in good condition can be found in the range from 180k (for the FZ6 of the first years of production) to 250k (for the FZ6 S2 with ABS 2008-2009 onwards) rubles. In reality, motorcycles costing more than 240k rubles are selling quite sluggishly; only variants with ABS and in good condition are quickly sold out.

Motorcycles costing 250-300 thousand often have a lot of tuning, which, as a rule, not everyone needs, but the owner wants to sell everything as a “set”.

Yamaha XJ 600 and XJ6
XJ 600

An old and rather heavy motorcycle.
If you buy yourself such a horse, then selling it later can be very problematic (2-3 seasons are in order, if not “merged”). Due to the antiquity and irrelevance of the grandmother, I propose to pay more attention to her granddaughter XJ6. The father in this case is the FZ6, and the mother is the R6.

ХJ6 N/Diversion/Diversion F

The XJ6 engine is derated to 78 hp.
strength and it will not be possible to increase their number (well, perhaps very slightly) Regarding the XJ6, opinions are usually divided into extremely contradictory ones. Some consider it a crisis and cheaper motorcycle, while others consider it a chic option for still inexperienced pilots and those who are not looking for “something out there” for every day.

The motorcycle is easy to control (partly due to the narrower 160mm rear cylinder), has an elastic engine and a modern look. The instrument panel is very informative, the only criticism is the turn signal light - there is only one and it is impossible to understand whether the right or left is on.

There are three variants of the XJ6 - N, Diversion and Diversion F. They are all the same motorcycle with different amounts of plastic body kit depending on the tastes and preferences of its intended owner.

There is also an American version - the FZ6R, similar to the Diversion F. The model actually replaced the FZ6, which replaced the FZ8 in the Yamaha line, and in the states the FZ6R is positioned as a sport for beginners. External differences that will immediately catch your eye will be: a separate seat, large-sized “burdock” turn signals and rectangular reflectors on the fork and the plate for the registration plate.

Smooth traction throughout the entire rev range, optional ABS, excellent handling and modern appearance make this device an excellent intermediate link on the way to the coveted “liter”. It will not become “small” as quickly as 400cc after the YBR 125 or Ninja 250, this is a device for at least a season or two.

Despite the weight, the motorcycle will be an ideal choice for girls. According to legend, in the FZ6R version the seat is additionally height adjustable. For convenience, you can even adjust the position of the steering wheel, although in practice this is extremely rarely required.

The model is still poorly represented on the secondary market; an adequate price for the version with ABS starts from 240k rubles. If you are focusing on the option without ABS, then the stock option starts from 220k rubles.

IMPORTANT! For the XJ6, it is also not recommended to purchase a motorcycle with an immobilizer in the absence of a red master key. The reason is described above in the review of the FZ6 motorcycle.

It makes sense to additionally search for the XJ6 in the XJ 600 section. Just enter the year of manufacture from 2009 (it was from this year that sales of the JX6 began in Russia). Sometimes sellers mistakenly list the XJ6 as an XJ 600, which is not in demand, and this affects sales. This gives you a chance to find a good device that, by chance, ended up in the wrong section. The American version of the FZ6R is often found in the Phaser section, where some sellers, for various reasons, attribute as many as 98 phaser forces to it (the main thing is that the PTS should have 78).

Kawasaki ER6

ER6, also known as Ruff, is a rather unique motorcycle with an in-line two-cylinder engine.

The “naked” version is perfect for the city, and for the countryside there is a hooded version.

Depending on the year of production, the ER6 differs in the dashboard, swingarm, plastic and more. The model turned out to be worthy and takes its place on the pilots’ path to the coveted “liter”.

The question often arises, which is better, ER6 or XJ6. These are two approximately identical motorcycles and you should choose based on the comfort of fit, personal preferences and needs. Since the engines are still different, the ER6 will be better at low speeds, and the XJ6, for example, will be a little faster at maximum speed.

In the US, the ER6 is sold under the Ninja brand and is positioned as a beginner's sport. ER6 is a lightweight, very beautiful and moderately fast and nimble device. The fact that it has an “in-line two” engine means you don’t buy it for life.

As for the complaints about the quality of Kawasaki, it may be a little worse than that of its competitors, but this is not at all significant. Absolutely everything breaks. It’s just that when a Honda breaks down, a person thinks that he is out of luck and quietly goes for spare parts. But when a Kawasaki breaks down, holiwars immediately begin on the topic: “Well, you were warned!”

Choose a motorcycle carefully, take care of it properly and then it will not let you down.

Unfortunately, the problem of age lies on the surface here, because this motorcycle was produced for only 3 years: from 1989 to 1992. Hence the acute problem with finding spare parts and the “half-dead” community. However, I don’t see the point in going into details and will simply confirm everything said above: the motorcycle is good, but finding one alive will not be easy at all.

Yamaha XJR 400

Yes, 400, no, not 1200. Why? Because it’s still too early until the jelly in your head thickens and at least turns into jam. Therefore, I will talk about “big brother” later. The motorcycle itself is far from bad. Dynamics are on point. Spare parts are no more expensive than their peers. Appearance – normal. Reliability is decent. But there is one “but”. If you drive up to a girl in it, you won’t be able to ask her out on a date, because she still won’t hear you because of the knocking of your clutch basket and air-oil-cooled engine. To be clear, these motorcycles (in their average condition) drum so hard that even Ducati's ears are blocked. The reason for this is the peculiarities of the CPG design with its thermal gaps and some kind of widespread problem with the bearing on the clutch basket, which does not greatly affect the performance of the unit, but scares off the girls with its grunting, so a big minus!

But jokes aside, we can safely say that the XJR400 is inherently no worse than the other motorcycles from this collection, and many will even like it more because of its “full size”, which is achieved due to the long tail and plump tank like Latin hips .
