Review of the Lifan 200 GY-5 motorcycle

ZiD-Lifan LF200 GY-5 – budget enduro bike

The cooperation between the famous Russian ZiD plant and the Chinese company Lifan has been successfully going on for several years now, allowing them to regularly offer interesting new motorcycle products. In this review, we will get acquainted with the ZiD-Lifan LF200 GY-5 motorcycle, which can safely be called one of the leaders in terms of price/quality ratio in the segment of budget enduro motorcycles on the Russian market.

The appearance of the Lifan LF200 GY-5 motorcycle is quite modern, but at the same time it lacks its own recognizable face. The exterior of the LF-200 GY5 was copied from a number of Japanese enduro bikes and created by Chinese designers at the Lifan head office. In turn, ZiD ensures high-quality assembly of motorcycles for the Russian market at its production facilities.

In terms of dimensions, the Lifan LF200 GY-5 bike is not much different from its competitors, completely fitting into the framework of its class. The length of the bike is 2200 mm, while the wheelbase is 1450 mm. The height of the motorcycle does not exceed 1220 mm, and the width along the handlebars is 860 mm. The dry weight of the bike is 122 kg, and the curb weight of the motorcycle does not exceed 130 kg. The maximum permissible load on the motorcycle is 150 kg.

If we talk about technical characteristics, the Lifan LF200 GY-5 (Zid) is equipped with a single-cylinder four-stroke engine 163FML-2 made in China with a compression ratio of 9.0. Its displacement is 196.9 cm3, and the maximum power does not exceed 16.5 hp. (12 kW), developed at 8000 rpm. The engine is equipped with a carburetor fuel system, a CDI capacitor ignition system and air cooling. The maximum torque of the 163FML-2 engine is about 14.5 Nm and is achieved at 6500 rpm, allowing it to accelerate to a top speed of 100 km/h. As for fuel consumption, the average level of consumption of AI-92 gasoline is set by the manufacturer at 2.3 liters per 100 km at a speed of 60 km/h.

The engine of the ZiD-Lifan LF200 GY-5 motorcycle is combined with a 5-speed manual transmission with a multi-plate clutch operating in an oil bath. The final drive ratio is 2.706. The traction to the drive wheel is transmitted through a chain drive.

The suspension design of the LF200 GY-5 bike is classic. A telescopic hydraulic fork is used at the front, and a pendulum suspension with a spring-hydraulic shock absorber is used at the rear. Both wheels are equipped with hydraulically driven disc brakes. The motorcycle comes with a 21-inch wheel at the front and an 18-inch wheel at the rear.

The Lifan LF 200 GY5 motorcycle is perfect for both everyday use in urban areas and for use in off-road conditions. Currently, the manufacturer recommends selling the ZiD-Lifan LF200 GY-5 enduro bike at a price of 60,625 rubles.

Specifications

Despite the average and long-known characteristics, the new product has excellent off-road capability with the ability to travel long distances. Reliable operation is ensured by a Chinese engine of its own production, it has 1 cylinder, operates in 4-stroke mode and produces a volume of 196.9 cm3. The specified maximum engine power is 15.8 horses, which is quite enough for independent driving on off-road and forest roads. If you paid attention to the Lifan brand, a 200cc motorcycle will be the best choice for beginners or lovers of inexpensive enduro.

This bike will have to be driven with a standard 5-speed gearbox.

The quality of Lifan engines is always at a high level; this model uses technology from the Japanese brand Honda, which confirms its ease of maintenance and durability. The gearbox is extremely sensitive and responds quickly to gear shifts, because it has a multi-plate clutch. Another feature of the engine is the presence of a capacitor ignition system. As a standard, starting the engine is possible in one of two ways - an electric starter or a kickstarter.

Pros and cons of the motorcycle

pros

    Lightweight and affordable motorcycle for beginners. Low fuel consumption. Soft suspension, comfortable for light rider. Good traction at low speeds will not allow a beginner to stall.

Minuses

    Inability to withstand harsh off-road loads, chain stretches. Weak headlight light. High vibrations, spontaneous unscrewing of bolts and motor mounts.

Design Features

Photos of the Lifan motorcycle once again confirm that the Chinese can make a good enduro for a low price. In general, the main emphasis in this model, and indeed in any enduro, is precisely on the quality of parts and their functionality, appearance plays a secondary role. In order to better overcome off-road obstacles and feel more comfortable, the motorcycle acquired a rear pendulum suspension, which included a pendulum shock absorber. A telescopic fork is installed at the front.

This is the standard suspension of most Chinese motorcycles, but its reliability is completely justified and it can withstand cornering at high speed. The braking system, consisting of disc brakes with a hydraulic system, is responsible for reliability when driving. But speed indicators also play an important role. The indicated maximum speed is 100 km/h, a comfortable speed for movement is 80-90 km/h. A tank with a capacity of 10.5 liters will allow you to go on a long journey; with a consumption of about 2.4 liters per 100 km, this motorcycle will be an ideal option for many travelers. Reviews about Lifan GY 5 generally talk about an average consumption of 3-3.5 liters per hundred, which is also an excellent indicator.

Other equally important characteristics affect the weight of the motorcycle; dry weight was 122 kg, the maximum specified load capacity was 150 kg. That is, if you want to ride on normal roads, you can safely take a passenger with you. Movement on public roads is possible thanks to the presence of side lights, turn signals, headlights with low and high beams, as well as all the necessary lighting devices. A high-quality 12 V battery will help ensure uninterrupted operation of all systems and components.

Here I will talk about the Lifan lf200 GY-5 motorcycle, the cost of maintenance, performance characteristics and my modifications. This motorcycle should not be considered a serious enduro or cross-country motorcycle... for me it is an ordinary off-road utility bike.

General information about the motorcycle

According to the title, it has 15.8 hp. — for leisurely trips through the forest and alone this is enough on the highway; a comfortable speed of 80-90 km/h is at 5-6 t.rpm according to the tachometer the consumption is 3-3.5 l/100 km, the best result was noticed during the run-in 2.46 l/100 km The tank volume is 10.5 liters, there was a case when I drove 350 km on a full tank and arrived at a gas station without switching to reserve. The advantages of this motorcycle: - the price of a new one is from 45 thousand rubles. -relative reliability with proper care -fuel consumption -the ability to drive where a road worker will not pass -the cost of both consumables and spare parts (for example: pads 300 rubles, a new wheel 4 thousand rubles) There are disadvantages, like everyone else (I will describe what is significant for me): - oil change interval 2t.km -fork weak to twist -weak headlight (fixed) -creaky rear suspension (the very fact that there is a progression there is a plus, but the lack of oil nipples is a minus, by the way, I have never disassembled the progression in 8t.km, I just sprayed it with VD and everything was fine) - the seat is narrow, maybe I’m being picky, but after an hour and a half of driving the fifth point becomes numb

Now I will describe the costs and modifications of the motorcycle

The motorcycle was purchased for 48 thousand rubles.
in a box + 2500 rub. home delivery. During assembly, the wheel bearings, speedometer gearbox, throttle/clutch cables were lubricated. Oil change: 0,300,600,1200,2000 km - that’s it, break-in completed, then oil change every 2t.km, volume of oil poured 1.1l, total spent on oil for 8t.km ~ 5800 RUR with the cost of a 1L canister ~ 650 RUR Additionally, the motorcycle was equipped with: - a fuel filter ~ 50 RUR - a Chinese alarm system with a tilt and shock sensor (it will scare off simple gopniks, but car thieves don’t need Lifan), the alarm system/siren is hidden far away and it takes time to get to it and a certain dexterity, it also has an additional battery in case the battery wires are cut. ordered from aliexpress ~ 350 RUR - fender liner for the front wheel (seen in the first photo) now after driving through puddles - the engine is less covered in mud - electronic temperature sensor (the thermocouple itself is built into the dipstick) - 1000 RUR + new dipstick ~ 100 RUR - original headlight with a power of 35 W is comparable with a candle in a children's cake... replaced it with a standardized FG137 headlight with OSVAR halogen optics with a screen and dimensions 1) headlight housing - free “from the neighbor’s barn” 2) optics - 200 rubles (it is possible to install a “crystal” one) 3) high-luminosity lamp 60/55W ~ 300r 4) lamp block - 30r 5) two metal plates, fasteners, heat shrink, soldering iron 6) can of paint ~ 100r 7) owl fairing - 170r The photo shows plates for installing such a headlight, but in general how everything looks as seen in the first photo

I don’t remember anything else I would do with a motorcycle.

Let me sum it up

During the 2014 season I rode 8t.km on this motorcycle, there were no breakdowns, I’m happy with everything. By the 2015 season I plan to replace: - the oil in the fork (there are no problems with it, rather for prevention) - the rubber band on the pendulum (chain guide) - 300 rubles - the rear hub bushings - 500 rubles Thousands in 5: - pads (now they are in good condition, I don’t know how much longer they will last) - tires (yes, the original one has gone through 8 thousand and is still fine) - sprockets/chain (during the run this year the sprockets have never changed, chain twice because the price is 280 rubles “Muravyevskaya”)
The motorcycle triples me for everyone and is suitable for those who are not going to climb on it in kaki and drive like hell on a par with Japanese enduros, it is very comfortable to move on dirt roads, light off-road and ride on not very long distances distances on asphalt.

Thank you everyone for your attention who read to the end :)

Advantages

  • with good care it will ensure long-lasting, uninterrupted operation;
  • excellent cross-country ability for utilitarian enduro;
  • low fuel consumption;
  • cheap spare parts;
  • modest price.

But motorcycle owners also note several shortcomings. Among them, we note weak headlights, creaky suspension and an uncomfortable seat that causes discomfort after an hour of driving.

Price

When compared with European brands or equipment from Japan, the Chinese brand Lifan has an incredibly low cost of its motorcycle equipment. Even if we compare the Lifan 200 GY-5 with other Chinese enduro brands of similar volume, the price of the motorcycle is still one of the best.

As a result, the price tag for Lifan 200 GY-5 varies from $1,100 to $1,500; if you wish, you can buy Lifan 200 for about $700. Finding spare parts is quite simple, because the brand is quite popular and has a large selection of parts.
