And I liked it. Unusual, but beautiful. Or maybe this is a military version in camouflage? As it turns out, no. True, a modification for the army (with a huge trunk) in the same white plastic was also in the motorcycle showroom, but for us, according to the mechanics, they prepared a completely civilian utilitarian version. Another thing is that, as it turned out later, the character of this car was also quite combative.

...The cross-country track is in a disgusting state. It looks like during the last thaw someone had a blast driving the Big Foot here. Now the ruts from the giant wheels were covered with frost and insidiously covered with snow. A real time bomb for a snowmobile.

I’m not alone in the two-seater saddle of the “Commander” - behind me is a girl named Sasha, whom Alexey specially invited for filming, and now I’m kind of responsible for her. In order not to lose my charming companion, I try to be more careful with the gas trigger. The snowmobile swings from side to side, as if in a force nine storm. From the point of view of a tough test, this is good, but there is no joy, especially for the passenger. Sasha squeaks pitifully from behind...

Simple, without any bells and whistles or technical frills, the front suspension with 210 mm of travel is considered very reliable, and now it has been diligently working on its reputation. It was not her fault that the plastic skis had nothing to really support on this, so to speak, road. The rear suspension, with a very decent travel of 340 mm, also tried its best. Both of them, armed with 36 HP-Gas shock absorbers, seemed soft and comfortable to me. Well, Lynx XTrim Commander was created for this purpose, to overcome difficulties. But here’s the paradox: the driver enjoys such a ride, while the passengers feel only one desire - to quickly find themselves in another place where they will not be tormented by seasickness.

Beauty! Perfectly smooth icy road. The snowmobile floats along it like a white swan, clearly defining numerous turns, digging into the ice with its steel ski skates. Acceleration, braking, acceleration... Barashkov takes frame after frame. Finally, pause. Alexey needs to replace the batteries in his camera, the model’s phone rang... this will take a long time. In the meantime, I’ll try “Commander” in long turns. One circle, another...

Snowmobiles fly too

IN THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT there was a cord for emergency engine shutdown. You hook it with one end to the front panel, the other - to your hand or to the carabiner on your jacket. If you leave the saddle against your will, this string pulls the plug from the ignition and the engine stalls. But we, tough snowmobilers, don’t need such tenderness. We're not falling...

I came up with this idea on the fly. In the next turn, at full speed, the “Commander” crashed its caterpillar into a track covered with snow. Actually, there was little choice. Either we flip over with the car, or I throw the steering wheel and the snowmobile has a chance to stay on its skis.

The snowmobile itself, its new “LXU” platform, wide 50-centimeter track with flails increased to 38 mm were up to the mark. Unlike me and the photographer. I, of course, was sitting in a snowdrift, and Alexey, tinkering with the equipment, missed a stunning shot - how the “Commander” with the engine running proudly rushed straight into the centuries-old pine trees.

God! Not this! He's so new, white... is he at least insured?!

...I was lucky that day, to say the least. My white Lynx rustled a millimeter from the tree bark and, losing speed and going to idle, froze in the forest.

“But you jumped not bad at all for a utility man,” I thought, again taking hold of the high steering wheel of the snowmobile. “It’s time to test you, my friend, for real.” Don't get it wrong! Of course, it’s rare to see the owner of a large, solid snowmobile rushing headlong across the field: ears flattened, teeth bared, pupils like sticks... This “Commander” is not at all sporty, its vocation is long, leisurely travel. The utilitarian is immediately visible, if only by the yellow shovel on his right side, peacefully waiting when it is needed on a hike...

But why not try, if the snowmobile is clearly capable of more than phlegmatically trudging through the virgin snow? On the forest road, I was already tired of holding back 115 “stallions” in the paddock of a 600-hp HO SDI engine (by the way, this time-tested engine has a reputation for being incredibly reliable). It's time to give them free rein. And the two-stroke water “two”, with two carburetors and a diffuser with a diameter of 46 mm, having ceased to pretend to be a herbivore, howled predatorily in the forest silence. I barely had time to glance at the number “100” on the speedometer when three frozen ice waves appeared ahead, as if by order. The snowmobile went through two, and on the third ridge it jumped so high that I almost lost the steering wheel from surprise.

Ah well! It turns out he can also fly?! And I turn to the side at the cross-country track. You may not believe it or laugh, but I got the most pleasant emotions during the Lynx X-Trim Commander LTD 600 HO SDI test from ski jumping. The weight distribution of a large, solid utilitarian snowmobile is the envy of many sports models. Both in the snow and in the air, the Commander does not change its trajectory. It seems that it doesn’t matter to him what to travel or what to fly. I’m talking about a fighting character.

“Scandics” (from RUB 949,000) replaced the 600 cc 4-stroke ACE engine with the 900 ACE, while the two-stroke 600 E-Tec remained. And rightly so: the 600 ACE was in some places not enough for a utilitarian snowmobile. Also, these “scraps” received a painted tunnel - snow flies off it more easily.

Oh, it’s not an easy job, dragging a heavy tourist-utilitarian snowmobile out of snow captivity!

The Finnish branch of BRP presented a new product for the season - the super-tour snowmobile Lynx Xtrim Commander 800 E-Tec Traveler Touratech (from RUR 1,499,000), surrounded by protection in the form of a reinforced front bumper, a front bumper luggage extension, a rear trunk with an extension, hand protection, large aluminum luggage boxes and luggage area prepared for LinQ mounts. BRP is modestly silent about the weight of this monster, but the test in Sheregesh showed that not every rider can cope with it, and it’s not worth climbing into deep snow - pulling this “Frankenstein” out of an ambush will cost a lot! After all, it is not even a windtruck and is equipped with a track only 500 mm wide. But there is electronic suspension control: you can directly change the spring stiffness of the rear shock absorber and the compression and rebound speed of the rear and central shock absorbers on the fly.

Regular Xtrim Commander (from RUB 979,000) has received an updated design and colors. Snowmobiles 69 Yeti Army (from RUB 1,139,000) will also be available in new colors for the 2016 model year. Lynx Adventure GT (from RUB 999,000) is now equipped with a 900 ACE engine and “electronic gas”, as well as adjustable steering spacer and CVT settings.
