2015 Can-Am Outlander 6×6 1000 XT Review

Fans of tourism or farmers should pay attention to 6x6 ATVs. This equipment was created specifically for transporting and towing bulk cargo and equipment. Depending on the power and modification, such a device has a pulling force of 500-800 kg. But it is worth noting that only famous brands are involved in the development of full-fledged six-wheelers.

Advantages of the technique:

  • High load capacity. One of the most popular models, the BRP Outlander 6x6 1000 XT can carry 353 kg and tow up to 750 kg.
  • Excellent maneuverability. Devices with six driving wheels easily overcome any obstacles. The equipment can drive through sand, snow, wetlands, small bodies of water, etc.
  • Technical base. The development of six-wheelers is carried out by famous brands, equipping their ATVs with modern “stuffing”. The same Polaris Sportsman 800 Big Boss 6×6 Forest has powerful lighting, an innovative Lock & Ride cargo system, MacPherson suspension, automatic transmission, etc.
  • Versatility. If necessary, you can detach the platform with two wheels from the ATV, turning the device into a regular utilitarian all-terrain vehicle.

Attempts to create a 6x6 ATV have been made by Chinese and Russian brands. For example, the domestic company Russian Mechanics has released several models: PM 500 and 650-2. But in such devices only four wheels are connected to the engine.

Who are 6x6 ATVs suitable for?

A powerful six-wheeler, reminiscent of a small tractor, is most often purchased by farmers and rural residents . In the majority, such equipment is used for various business tasks and successfully replaces a truck. However, due to their high cross-country ability and power, 6x6 ATVs are used in expeditions and hiking trips.

An interesting feature of six-wheeled ATVs is their versatility . For convenient storage of equipment or to save fuel, the rider can detach the platform, thereby turning the massive device into a regular all-terrain vehicle. After transformation, the car can be used for fishing, hunting and just racing.

Experience in operating 6 wheel ATVs

There are literally legends about six-wheeled vehicles; the devices have a lot of advantages :

  • High cross-country ability . With this ATV you can go to the mountains, drive through the desert or overcome a wetland. Of course, a strong quagmire will become a trap for the clumsy giant, but something has to be sacrificed.
  • Traction and towing. The vehicle carries all the necessary equipment, and the presence of a winch turns the all-terrain vehicle into a real peacemaker. Significant traction force makes it easy to free other equipment from a quagmire, tow a tree, etc.
  • Comfort . The extended wheelbase turns even a long trip into a pleasant vacation.
  • Reliability. Now, only Polaris and BRP produce full-fledged 6x6 ATVs. These are market leaders developing high-quality and durable equipment.

Despite all the advantages, 6x6 ATVs have several disadvantages. The main disadvantage of all-terrain vehicles is significant fuel consumption. Even low-power models equipped with a 650 cc engine consume approximately 15-18 liters of gasoline per 100 km.

The dimensions of the equipment will also cause problems. Riders do not have any difficulties on rough terrain, but the equipment is not very suitable for riding in the forest.

2015 Can-Am Outlander 6×6 1000 XT Review

Six-wheeled utility ATV from Can-Am

For the 2015 model year, Can-Am announced the Outlander ATV with the familiar 976 cc Rotax fuel-injected twin-cylinder engine and belt-driven transmission. But the main feature of the new product is the presence of an additional axle and a tiltable loading platform at the rear, which makes the machine even more productive and useful in work. The 2015 Can-Am Outlander 6×6 1000 XT cannot be described in a nutshell, but one thing is clear - it is an incredibly powerful workhorse that can handle any task.

Clearly, six-wheel ATVs can carry even more than their four-wheel counterparts, and the new Can-Am Outlander is even more capable off-road with an extra pair of wheels. In truth, behind the wheel of the 2015 Can-Am Outlander 6x6, it almost doesn't feel like you're driving a stretched car. It feels like you're driving a Can-Am Outlander MAX with a cargo bed in the back instead of a seat.

The BRP Can-Am Outlander 6x6 1000 XT is a machine built for tough work.

The control layout is the same as on the standard Outlander, and the seat is as soft as you'd expect from any Can-Am ATV. Under the seat provides access to conveniently located items for maintenance such as the air filter, battery and brake fluid container. The footwells are spacious and have a grippy surface to keep you stable even in muddy conditions.

The forward tilt towards the steering wheel is very natural and easy, and the necessary controls are literally at hand. The Outlander 6x6 XT we tested was equipped with Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering, which allows the driver to adjust the power of the steering to suit their preferences. This is a very useful thing, since you can increase the power of the amplifier if the cargo platform of the machine is loaded, and the most effective DPS operating mode will allow you to steer relatively easily even with a full load and on difficult trails.

As part of the test drive, we loaded the body with paving stones, which were transported from one site to another. The additional weight did not affect the performance of the engine in any way, and the suspension was just as effective at softening the impacts of bumps in the road.

The Outlander 6x6 can carry up to 317 kilograms of cargo.

The Outlander 6x6 cargo bed can support up to 317 kilograms of cargo, indicating the incredible strength and reliability of the chassis structure underneath. The machine is also equipped with a two-inch receiver hitch, with which you can tow up to 750 kilograms. It's unlikely that anyone would need to carry 300 kilograms in the cargo bed while towing about 700 more, but the very fact that this monster is capable of this is amazing.

If the terrain is really tough and you need all six wheels to pull, just use the switch on the right handlebar. The Can-Am Visco-Lok QE front differential knows when it's needed and doesn't make steering difficult at all.

With six-wheel drive, the Outlander can take you just about anywhere.

BRP designers cleverly approached the design of the cargo platform on the 2015 Can-Am Outlander 6×6 1000 XT and equipped it with one hydraulic shock absorber that provides a tipping function. The corresponding lever is located on the right behind the driver and is held in its original position by a special safety pin, which will prevent the load from accidentally falling out of the body. The cargo platform itself is quite large and durable. Neither the paving stones nor the logs seriously damaged the surface of the body, although we were careful and did not throw loads there as hard as we could.

Behind the driver on the right side there is a lockable lever for the loading platform, which tilts it.

A long flap in the center of the platform hides the luggage compartment, and although this part is not waterproof, you can purchase a dry box that snaps neatly into place. This is a great place for a cooler or cooler bag as it is far enough away from the engine to be out of the way while working. Moreover, the body can be easily transformed into a flatbed platform in a few minutes. The sides are simply removable, and Can-Am's accessory catalog includes several highly specialized cargo-carrying items.

Of course, Can-Am's designers took great care to ensure that the car would handle well off-road even with such a heavy load. The Outlander 6x6's ground clearance is 279 millimeters, but this will likely decrease slightly if the ATV bed is properly loaded. The front double A-arm suspension travels 228 millimeters vertically, and the rear independent trailing arm suspension travels 236 millimeters. Gas-filled shock absorbers with preload and, apparently, variable stiffness are responsible for softening the ride.

Thanks to the hydraulic shock absorber, the body tips over easily and quickly.

During the test drive, we also managed to drive an unloaded car at high speeds, and it turned out that the new car can be just as fun to drive. As you speed along the trails, it's easy to forget that you're riding on six wheels, as the large and powerful Rotax engine more than compensates for the increased weight and size of the ATV.

Also worth mentioning are the high-mounted air intakes that serve the engine and transmission. The designers installed them as high as possible in case the owner drives into a not-so-small stream or starts kneading mud in deep ruts. The reinforced front bumper on the Outlander 6x6 tested was equipped with a WARN winch with a towing capacity of 1,360 kilograms - part of the XT package. This option package also includes 26-inch Carlise ACT radials and 12-inch cast aluminum wheels. So the new product is good not only in operation, but also in terms of appearance.
