In this article I will tell you how to change the oil and oil filter using the example of a Honda cb400sfs motorcycle. The oil is changed in the same way on most motorcycles: suzuki, kawasaki, yamaha, ktm, etc. Differences can only be in the location of the oil filter, filler and drain holes. The principle is the same.
First, you need to warm up the engine so that the oil becomes more liquid and everything drains to the maximum.
Place the motorcycle in an upright position as much as possible, on the center stand or stand. If you leave the motorcycle on the side stand, not everything will drain, you will then have to tilt the motorcycle to drain the residue.
After the engine is warmed up, unscrew the drain bolt, first placing a container under the drain site. I use an old canister of the same oil as a container, cutting a hole in the side.
To drain the oil faster, unscrew the filler cap.
We wait until the oil stops flowing and remove the canister.
The best oil for the entire Honda line
Some car owners, when choosing lubricants for their iron friend, rely on the recommendations of friends, colleagues and reviews on the Internet. But in fact, first of all, it is necessary to take into account the technical indicators of the machine.
Honda engines are available in two types:
- belt;
- chain.
For the first, oils with the following markings will be suitable:
- 5w30;
- 10w30.
And for a Honda chain engine, it is better to purchase consumables with different numbers on the packaging:
- 0w20;
- 5w20.
In the combinations listed above, each digit has its own meaning:
- the first is responsible for the viscosity of the oil at sub-zero temperatures - the lower the number, the more resistant the lubricant is to cold weather;
- the second, on the contrary, displays how the oil behaves in the heat - a higher number in the marking “speaks” of maintaining the original degree of viscosity at levels much above zero.
When choosing oil for Honda engines, wear is also important. It is better to pour into a new car only what is recommended by Honda Japan.
In the future, when the degree of wear increases and gaps and burrs appear in the Honda engine , it will be advisable to purchase materials with higher performance. This approach will extend the service life of the engine and save the driver from unpleasant surprises.
But in addition to the listed parameters and nuances, the car owner should focus on the list of products recommended by the manufacturer.
Manufacturer's Recommended
Mobil 1 series motor oils to car owners for 12 years . They are produced both for the Japanese and Russian markets. But it is worth considering that motor oils for domestic use in Japan are somewhat more expensive due to the higher quality of the starting materials. Although this can also be a significant plus - most Russian car owners can afford even the most expensive Mobil 1.
The manufacturer warns that it is strictly prohibited to use Russian lubricants when changing oil! They produce a large percentage of sediments and coke, which does not at all indicate their low quality. The reason is different - Honda Japan claims that Russian oils are not even 10% compatible with the original engines of their brand.
Replacing the oil filter
Unscrew the old oil filter.
By the way, filter manufacturers state that the filter can be changed once every 2 oil changes. Although, if you have the means, I recommend changing the filter every time you replace it.
Fortunately, there are spare parts aggregators such as Exist and Avtodok, where you can find filters at low prices.
For example, in the photo there is a new Sakura filter purchased at the price of 188 rubles in existential. In local motorcycle stores the price tags are 450-600 rubles.
How to unscrew the old one
It is almost impossible to unscrew it manually; it gets stuck tightly during use. There are special pullers for removing the filter, but this is not our method; we will act more universally.
You can find a regular screwdriver in any garage, and the walls of the filter are quite thin. With a slight movement of your hand, pierce the filter and unscrew it. You just need to rip it off with a screwdriver, then it can be easily twisted by hand.
How to install new
Important! We tighten the drain bolt back so that the new oil is not wasted (there have been such cases).
Unpack the new filter.
Before putting it back in place, it is recommended to fill it with fresh oil to about half the volume. Otherwise, when you first start the engine, the engine will run “dry” for a couple of seconds until the oil is pumped through the filter. Why do we fill half of the filter and not the whole filter? During installation, half of the oil will still spill out, because... the filter is horizontal.
We wipe the seat on the engine from debris, sand and old oil and install a new filter. We twist it by hand, no special devices are required.
Fill in new oil. How much to fill - we check the manual and check it with a dipstick or through a window.
Oil for every Honda model
The Honda concern produces different car models, so each has its own types of recommended lubricants. Several options are discussed below.
Oil for Honda CR-V (Honda CR-V)
For Honda SRV you can use 2 groups of oils:
- synthetic;
- semi-synthetic.
The first group can safely include 4 types of lubricants:
- HONDA ULTRA LEO 0W20 SN – actively recommended by the automaker and provides better protection against friction;
- MOBIL 1 ESP X2 0W-20 – Honda Japan approves of this product for its good lubricating and protective properties, and it is also economical in consumption;
- RAVENOL LONGLIFE LSG SAE 5W-30 – car enthusiasts often avoid this brand, but it provides a very durable film that protects the engine from internal damage;
- GENERAL MOTORS DEXOS 2 LONGLIFE 5W30 is a good quality product at a reasonable price.
The following semi-synthetic materials can be safely filled into a Honda engine:
- HONDA ULTRA LTD 5W30 SN – the original product does not change its properties when used in a wide temperature range and reliably protects against friction;
- MOBIS PREMIUM GASOLINE 5W-20 - this oil for the Honda SRV engine performs well under sudden temperature changes;
- TOTACHI ECO GASOLINE 5W-30 - of all the brands presented, it best protects against corrosion and friction.
Oil for Honda Accord
This car model is extremely popular in Russia, but changing the oil still raises many questions among owners. Taking into account the age of the machine and engine wear, the following lubricants are recommended:
- TOTAL QUARTZ 9000 FUTURE GF-5 0W20 – a synthetic product does an excellent job of protecting components and systems from wear;
- TOTAL QUARTZ 9000 ENERGY 0W30 – confidently copes with cold starts and protection against oxidation, and also helps reduce fuel consumption;
- TOTAL QUARTZ INEO MC3 5W-30 – keeps the exhaust cleaning system in perfect condition and meets all European standards.
When using the listed products when changing oil in a Honda engine, it is not recommended to add third-party additives. The necessary substances are already added to the oil by the manufacturer.
Oil for Honda Civic
To understand which oil is safe to fill into a Honda Civic engine, you first need to decide on its type:
- synthetic;
- semi-synthetic.
There are suitable options in both groups. If you plan to use synthetics, then you should choose the following brands:
- Honda Ultra LEO 0W20 SN - due to the highest alkaline number, it is considered the best option;
- SHELL HELIX ULTRA 0W-40 – breaks all records of popularity, thanks to its high quality and attractive price;
- IDEMITSU ZEPRO ECO MEDALIST 0W-20 – perfectly protects against wear, so it is advisable to purchase it for an experienced car.
We recommend reading: Elf oil 5w30 – synthetic. Reviews, specifications and prices
Among semi-synthetics, the following are worthy of the attention of car enthusiasts:
- HONDA ULTRA LTD 5W30 SN is the clear leader among the options recommended by the concern;
- LIQUI MOLY TOP TEC 4200 5W-30 – reliability and quality are its main characteristics;
- GENERAL MOTORS SEMI SYNTHETIC 10W-40 is the best option for buyers with average incomes;
- MANNOL MOLIBDEN BENZIN 10W-40 is the lowest cost among analogues with similar characteristics.
Review of the Honda CB 400 motorcycle
Hello everyone. I have a SB400 super truck. First motorcycle. Quite frisky. Makes a hundred in 4 seconds. It is impossible to replace in the city. On the highway after 150 it starts to blow away. Well, I think a little windshield will fix the problem. The tank is 18 liters. If you ride around the city, it will be enough for hundreds of 3 kilometers. But if you burn it out, your appetite for fuel immediately increases to 7 liters, and when you drive on the highway it’s 140-160. 7-8. There are some disadvantages. But there's only one left on mine. They have soft Japanese shock absorbers. I replaced it with others and am happy. One drawback that remains is the fragile tidy. But if you don’t fall, nothing will happen to her)
I drove the SV 400 for 2 seasons, the feelings were only positive, reliable, there is nothing better in the city (I don’t consider bandits and analogues from Yamaha and Suzuki at all), I sold it at the end of the season and bought a Kava Volcano, but I still remember my truck with warm words and I regret it. that I couldn’t leave it as a second motorcycle.
I skated it clean for 2 seasons and sold it yesterday, looking back to Achinsk with tears. The device is beautiful and very reliable, just like the entire SV line. Maneuverable, lightweight and quite nimble. Of the minuses, I can note that the fuel consumption is quite low because in order to drive normally you still need to turn it - the cubic capacity is too small to calmly and impressively pick up speed. The mot is clearly for one or two pygmies :))). This is my first motorcycle and perhaps I’m too heavy and tall for him, 186 to 90 is normal for one, but with number 2 he’s straining, poor, and you can feel it. Simple as a Lego set, that’s why my love for the SV line is limitless.
I have a 2002 Honda CB 400 Super Four Hyper Vtec Spec 2. I've been driving it for a long time, 5 years. The element of this motorcycle, a city with traffic jams, although long-distance travel is not alien to it, drove 960 km at a time. Acceleration is quite brisk, 4.5-5 seconds, it all depends on the pilot. Consumption also depends on the rider, you can keep within 4 liters per hundred, but this is at a speed of 90-100 km/h, but if you anneal, your appetite ceases to be modest and reaches 8-10 liters (((Tank volume is 18 liters, There is no deep cleaning filter here, so I recommend installing one yourself.
The handling is excellent, it takes turns up to the footpegs. The brakes are good too. The suspensions on it are not very good, on our “smooth” roads it breaks, especially with a passenger, by the way, acceleration also suffers from the presence of the asshole, after all, it’s not a liter engine. The optimal speed is 110-130 km/h. I drove without a windshield for 4 years, it was fine, but after installing it it became absolutely great, on the first trip with it I didn’t notice how I accelerated to 170))) By the way, the maximum speed shows 190-195, but the real ones are 180-185 somewhere. I'm willing to bet that this is a one-year motorcycle. I know people who have ridden it more than me. In general, the moto is excellent, especially if you are not a racer. Reliability is excellent, in 5 years NOTHING has broken or failed))) Spare parts are always available. And I also want to add that it is ideal for motorcycle gymkhana.
How often should you change the oil in a Honda engine?
The frequency of engine oil changes in Honda cars depends on many factors:
- year of issue;
- mileage;
- engine wear;
- season and so on.
The automaker recommends replacement every 7000-8000 kilometers traveled. This is the maximum permissible maximum, which can be reduced if the machine is actively used or cannot boast of good technical condition.
It is necessary to follow these recommendations primarily for the following reasons:
- aging of motor oils for the Honda engine - it is impossible to create a lubricant that does not lose its properties over time;
- need to change the oil filter.
Car owners are often interested in how much oil should be poured into a Honda car engine in order to avoid subsequent top-ups. The answer to this question depends on the engine size. But on average, experts pour 3.5 liters.
If the owner makes the replacement on his own, and not in a service center, then after comprehensive cleaning it is advisable for him to fill in as much oil as is included exactly to the middle between the minimum and maximum marks.
