Arctic Cat 366. Middle class
Whether long or short, ATVs persistently enter our lives. And no longer as an exotic, accessible only to a select few, but as a means of active recreation in the full sense of the word. Last year, Arctic Cat announced a new product for the 2008 season: the 366.

In the world of quads, there are quite a lot of “four hundred”. That is, ATVs with engines whose displacement is approximately 400 cc, give or take. At the same time, ATVs of the 400 cm3 class, as a rule, are the younger brothers of more respectable devices, which can be equipped with engines with a displacement of 500, 600, 700 cm3 or more. That is, many “four hundred” have quite a lot of weight and, accordingly, dimensions. Or vice versa, which in this case is not so important. Quads with a smaller volume are considered mainly as teenagers, ladies and youths, and are also of interest to rental offices, where initially low cost, low maximum speed and ease of repair play a decisive role.
Model 366 took a good place between the heavy, but low-power “400” and the light, but too simple “300” and 250 cc.
Compared to the 400 model (engine displacement 376 cm3) of the same Arctic Cat, the 366 (engine displacement 366 cm3) weighs 45 kg less (247 versus 293). The 250 won't get our attention because it doesn't have all-wheel drive, like most of its sister cars from other manufacturers. But at the same time, the 366 has all the elements of the transmission and steering, like the 400.

The front suspension of the 366th model is based on the now classic Artcic Cat design, that is, on double A-arms. The rear suspension is a little simpler - on two A-arms, which is much more convenient to use than the pendulum arm that is installed on weaker models. At the same time, the front and rear suspension travel, ground clearance and ground clearance of the model in question differ by only a couple of inches (about 5 cm) from the same parameters as those of its older brothers. But there is a nuance. The wheelbase of the 366 is 122 cm, while that of the 400 (and older) model is 127 cm. It seems like a trifle, but this turned out to be enough that even with smaller wheels (the rims are like the “big ones”, but the height smaller tire profile) to ensure the cross-country ability of the ATV at the level of, for example, the 650th model. Of course, weight and track width also play a role here, which, by the way, is also smaller.
The transmission of the new product is the same as that of most serious quads: automatic CVT (variable speed transmission) with EBS function (engine braking). There is perhaps no locking front differential, but for the 366, locking is irrelevant due to the low overall weight and main purpose.
The engine was built specifically for this model by Artcic Cat themselves. For many years, Artcic Cat has been using Suzuki engines to power its products, but in the last few years it has been developing and producing powertrains itself. The first product was the H1 engine, which has been installed in the 650 H1 and Prowler models for more than three years.

The H2 engine with a displacement of 366 cm3 is quite simple and unpretentious. It has an air-oil cooling system, a SOHC timing system, 4 valves and a hemispherical combustion chamber. The power supply is managed by the injection system, so you can expect low consumption from the engine and “failure-free” operation throughout the entire speed range.
Since the developers wanted the 366 to be original in everything - from the power unit to the appearance, they had to make a new frame, steering, and external body kit. Naturally, taking into account previous developments, however, many elements had to be done anew. Due to the fact that the quad is made on the basis of new elements, its ergonomics are more modern, that is, the driver is comfortable at the workplace. And if it’s convenient, it means it’s safe, especially after several hours of travel.
In short, the 366 can be considered one of the most successful Arctic Cat models, which organically combines not only price and quality, but also appearance and capabilities. Speaking of possibilities. This quad is equipped with a SpeedRack cargo stowage system, automotive-type towbars and a full-fledged instrument panel.
It is clear that in Russia they love everything big and powerful. But the above-mentioned quad with a not very powerful motor in some situations will turn out to be more agile and less demanding than its older brothers. It is not only suitable for pleasure walks and travel, but also suitable for those who love hunting and fishing. It all depends on the places where it is intended to be used. Of course, no one suggests driving through a centuries-old windfall, but forest paths, ravines, just forests and clearings overgrown with bushes are no obstacle to him. And it will pass through swampy areas more successfully than heavy monsters, especially since the 366 can be tuned.
Motor
The new 366cc H2 engine was developed by Arctic Cat specifically for the 366, the second successful attempt at building custom engines from the Minnesota-based ATV and snowmobile manufacturer. The first-born was the H1 for the 650 model.
