Why double?

THERE IS an opinion that a journalist, when assessing equipment taken for a test drive, should be as impartial as a calculator. I agree with this a thousand times! But if readers notice that my sympathies lean towards two-seater ATVs (regardless of the manufacturer), I will not object. Your humble servant has tried all the currently existing four-wheelers, with the exception of children. Each of them is good in its own way, but doubles are doubly good. What other main types of ATV are there?

Sports. Powerful, with rear axle drive, it’s rage on the track, barely covered by light wings. Great! But behind us are a couple of furious kilometers through the beds of some field petrified in the cold, meanwhile the oil in the shock absorbers has just begun to warm up to its operating temperature, and the speedometer needle is creeping up to the number “100”. And my hands, due to the terrible vibration, have already stopped feeling the steering wheel - it feels like they have swollen and become twice as thick.

From the outside looking in, the AT V flutters like a butterfly over the highway. In fact, the impression of lightness is achieved through titanic labor. Endless workouts, long runs, swimming pool, diet... and much more. Are you ready for this? Or is a sports four-wheeler bought in a hurry doomed to gather dust in the far corner of your garage?

Utilitarian ATV. Good in a large company of his own kind, on a long hike or friendly rides. You can ride without friends... if you are a lone wolf by nature. If not, you’re unlikely to stand it for long, you’ll just get bored. Sharing with friends the joy of communicating with good technology, of the beauty that you see around you, is not at all the same as talking about your impressions at home.

And this is where the ATV duo comes into the picture. I covered 200 kilometers, stopped in the middle of a dense forest, as if straight out of a Shishkin painting, turned off the engine, took off my helmet, turned to my companion, or better yet, my companion... You don’t even need to say anything, just listen to the voices of the birds and the silence together..

“Arctic Cat 650 H1 TRV plus” is so easy to use that even girls can handle it. You just need to touch the gas trigger and you are off on an exciting journey.

There is no such thing as too much power

I first found myself in the SADDLE of a two-seater “Arctic Cat” last year in Finland. There we managed to drive quite a lot on the TRV500 model, most of the way with a passenger. A well-tailored and well-made four-wheeler with excellent chassis, but the engine left much to be desired. In the strong AT V frame stood a reliable, time-tested “five hundred” water cooling from Suzuki. The engine has good characteristics, but, from my point of view, it is too small for an ATV twin. I certainly started a debate on this topic at every meeting with the developers of such technology.

A two-seater four-wheeler is heavier than a single-seater and carries two riders - a driver and a passenger. So why should he feel inferior in such, say, a simple situation as climbing a hill? Why not equip it with a decent motor? Manufacturers usually had one answer to this: “Dangerous.”

For mercy's sake, for whom is it dangerous? For the passenger? Are you afraid of losing it, starting at an incredible speed? This is hardly possible - after all, a “powerful” 650 cc engine. cm, which - finally! – began to equip two-seater ATVs from “Arctic Cat”, developing no more than 50 hp. I have yet to lose a single passenger on my sportbike, which has a motor three times stronger and does not have the comfortable backrest in the rear seat like the “650 H1 TRV plus”.

Maybe there is a risk that the car will tip over when standing on its rear wheels? There is no such risk! Not long ago I tested a single “Arctic Cat” with the most powerful injection engine in the company’s line, the “700th”. So, in order to lift this “Arctic Cat” (at the request of the photographer) onto its rear wheels, I had to try very hard. And it didn’t always work out, despite the fact that the short-wheelbase “seven hundred” is twice as willing to rear up as a long two-seater four-wheeler.

The main obstacle for an AT V driver is the hills that are sure to come your way. The two-seater Arctic Cat 650 H1 TRV plus climbs mountains better than a regular ATV. It's very simple: its wheelbase (1,470 mm) is 200 mm longer than that of the short model, and its suspension travel is 50 mm less, so it is much more difficult to tip over than a short wheelbase four-wheeler. The deuce, like a cat, is spread out along the slope, and it seems that there is no force that can tear it away from the steep mountain. A lower ground clearance also helps with this. For the “650th” it is 255 mm – the same 50 mm as the suspension travel, less than for its short-wheelbase counterpart.

Do you want to know the difference between a two-wheeler ATV with a decent engine and a less powerful one on a climb?

France. Mountain route. The company on four-wheelers from one well-known company was quite serious, all of them were not beginners. In front of us is a mountain of such steepness that, to be honest, I would go around it... only there is no other way. I was third in the group, two were already at the top, behind me was a married couple on a two-seater ATV with a “500” engine, and behind them were the rest. There is nowhere to retreat. I accelerate and reach the middle of the climb without any problems. And then, on a rocky path, my right wheel hits a large stone. The front wheels of my ATV leave the ground (that's what short wheelbase means!). I fall with all my weight on the steering wheel and, thank God, the four-wheel drive pulls me to the top. The mountain is indeed not easy, even for professionals.

Now the two are accelerating. In the middle of the slope, it begins to lose speed - the power of the “five hundred” is not enough. We froze: everyone has a good idea of how this could end. The two are about to freeze on a steep slope and will definitely roll down. On a single-seater car this is bad, but in a good situation you can have time to drop the steering wheel, push away from the running boards and try to roll to the foot separately from the heavy four-wheeler. But there are two people here, and besides, the passenger is held by the back of the seat - it is good on a long journey, but can play a fatal role in the event of a rollover. But a catapult for four-wheelers has not yet been invented..

A nasty smell of a burnt variator belt hung in the air - this is the driver tormenting the transmission. Literally, by the millimeter, the two-seater ATV still managed to overcome the climb. Due to the skill of the driver. A dead engine on such a slope is what is truly dangerous! If anyone wants to prove that a four-wheeler has no need for extra power, I invite him to that mountain!
