Motorcycles of Russia: review of models, technical characteristics, manufacturers

Modern Russian motorcycles are in many ways inferior to well-known European and Japanese brands. However, they remain popular in rural areas, as well as among connoisseurs of classic domestic products. Similar equipment is also used in neighboring countries. You can often find tuned versions of the last century on the roads. Let's look at the domestic models that are currently being produced, as well as their features.

"Stealth"

Let's start our review of Russian motorcycles with the new and previously not very well-known Stealth brand, which is actively developing. This series includes the following models:

  • For several years, the production of Benelli Stealth 600 motorcycles has been mastered in Russia.
  • The 400 series of this manufacturer is distinguished by high quality indicators typical for light urban modifications with a cross-country exterior.
  • "Stealth Flex" is a classic road motorcycle.
  • Stels series units with a 200 cubic centimeter engine are dynamic vehicles, characterized by their simplicity of design and affordable price.

Motorcycles "Minsk"

Oddly enough, the production of motorcycles at the plant continues, new models appear, and they are beautiful not only in appearance, but also with good technical characteristics. Several options are available:

New motorcycles - 2022. The shine and blackness of motorcycles

The retro fashion has dragged on: in the 2022 model year, most motorcycle manufacturers, well-known and not so well-known, continued to develop the theme of cafe racers, neoclassics and other scramblers. But among these, without irony, stylistically and technically beautiful devices, several pearls of a different kind flashed.

Natalia Umnova
BALTMOTORS

The Kaliningrad company is offering several new products this year.

Turenduro RX1 with a single-cylinder 200 cc engine, which, at the buyer’s request, can be equipped with both a carburetor and an injector.

Instead of the classic Classic 200, there is now a Road Viking chopper with a new 200 cm³ engine, an 18‑inch front wheel and a more discreet modern appearance.

A new model among road warriors is the naked Z2 with streetfighter looks, a 200 cc engine, a birdcage frame, an inverted telescopic fork, cast aluminum wheels, disc brakes and a monochrome LCD instrument panel.

Also in the Baltmotors model range are the Enduro 200, Enduro 250, Motard 200, Motard 250, Dakar 250E and Razor 250. And by next year they promise a naked Z3 with a 250 cc engine and its sports version in a plastic body kit - RC3.

BMW

The Bavarians have released four new products: the luxury tourer BMW K 1600 Grand America - a competitor to the new Gold and Yamaha Venture, two new models in the GS family - the BMW F 750 GS and BMW F 850 GS, as well as the new BMW C 400 X scooter.

The BMW K 1600 Grand America is a redesigned BMW K 1600 B bagger with a 6-cylinder engine and exclusive equipment. The design of Grand America was created in accordance with the concept of relaxed and comfortable travel in the American style.

As standard, the tourer is equipped with an electronically adjustable Dynamic ESA suspension with two sets of settings (Road and Cruise), driver footrests and reverse gear.

After about 10 years of gradual development of the mid-range GS models, BMW Motorrad engineers decided to completely redesign these popular enduros with the aim of creating even more intuitive and easy-to-ride motorcycles that can be used not only for sport-oriented off-road, but also for touring with a passenger and luggage.

The new BMW F 750 GS is aimed at riders who like low-slung touring enduros that are torquey, balanced, well-equipped and well-priced.

The BMW F 850 GS is the opposite of the 750. The new product offers riders even more power and torque in combination with characteristics shifted in favor of long-distance touring and off-road riding.

The main goal of the engineers during the development of new models was to simultaneously increase power and torque. Additional attention was paid to reducing average fuel consumption. The new 853 cm³ in-line two-cylinder engine with two balancer shafts develops a maximum of 77 hp. With. on BMW F 750 GS and 95 l. With. on BMW F 850 GS. The power unit is integrated into a space frame made of seamless pipes and is a load-bearing structural element.

Two basic riding modes, Road and Rain, combined with the latest generation ABS and ASC stabilization system, help the rider maintain control of the motorcycle in different road conditions.

The new GS Series motorcycles can be equipped with optional equipment previously unavailable in this two-wheeler segment. It includes several seat options and wind deflectors of different heights, LED headlights and the ability to connect personal electronic devices for the driver with a TFT display.

The new BMW C 400 X is not just a comfortable, but a driving middle-class scooter, on which traversing city traffic jams is not only easy, but also pleasant.

The scooter is powered by a single-cylinder engine that is optimized for efficiency and produces 34 PS of power. With. Power is transmitted to the rear wheel via a variable speed drive integrated into a swingarm with high torsional rigidity and innovative bearings that effectively dampen vibrations and increase overall comfort. The device is also equipped with an automatic stabilization system ASC.

DUCATI

The Italians have expanded the Scrambler series with three models with a 1079 cc V-twin from the Monster 1100 EVO (84 hp, 88 Nm).

The Scrambler 1100, Scrambler 1100 Special and Scrambler 1100 Sport modifications differ in trim and suspension elements.

In the “base”, motorcycles are equipped with “cornering ABS”, which works when the motorcycle is tilted (in turns), traction control, LED running lights and a multimedia dashboard, which can display some information from gadgets after retrofitting Bluetooth module.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON

The Softail family has undergone major changes, incorporating the most popular models of the Dyna family, which ceases to exist due to irrelevance: the new motors with two balancer shafts do not vibrate nearly as much as they should for the Dyna models, and the visibility of the shock absorbers no longer matters. The Softail platform itself has been updated, with eight updated models—Fat Boy, Heritage Classic, Low Rider, Softail Slim, Deluxe, Breakout, Fat Bob and Street Bob—featuring a stiffer and lighter steel frame and swingarm, as well as more efficient front and rear suspensions .

Harley-Davidson Low Rider

Harley-Davidson Fat Bob

Harley-Davidson Breakout 115 Anniversary Edition

The new motorcycles are equipped with a Milwaukee-Eight 107 - 1745 cm³ engine (a Milwaukee-Eight 114 - 1868 cm³ will be available as a factory option on some models) and will handle better thanks to an optimized Dual-Bending Valve fork and an updated rear monoshock.

Models can be equipped with two swing arm options: one for a narrow rear tire and one for a wide rear tire.

The Softail family now also includes a touring bike – the Harley-Davidson Sport Glide. This is a factory custom, suitable for both short trips around the city and for travel.

Harley-Davidson Sport Glide

With removable saddlebags and fairing, the Sport Glide can be easily transformed into a city cruiser. Its versatility is the main trump card, which allows you not to be torn when choosing between a motorcycle for the city and a touring bike for weekend trips. This is the ninth motorcycle on both the 2022 Softail platform and in the list of 100 new models that the company plans to introduce before 2027.

Harley-Davidson Sport Glide

Like all 2022 Softail models, the Sport Glide gets an updated rear monoshock suspension with preload adjustment. The adjustment knob is located just below the right side cover, which will allow you to quickly optimize the settings for the weight of the passenger and luggage.

The motorcycle is equipped with a Milwaukee-Eight 107 engine and cruise control as standard.

HONDA

The key new product of the Japanese concern is, of course, the new Honda Gold Wing, rebuilt from start to finish.

The motorcycle has become smaller and lighter by 48 kg. The engine is still a horizontally opposed 6-cylinder (126 hp, 170 Nm), but more compact and lighter and now equipped with 4 valves per cylinder, proximity throttle control with four ride modes, torque control and assist control when starting on an incline. The device also received a combined anti-lock braking system.

Characteristic features of the new chassis are an aluminum diagonal frame, an independent double-wishbone front suspension that eliminates dive when braking and significantly reduces steering effort, and a Pro-Arm console with electronic adjustment, including rear spring preload. An electronic display, Smart Key and Apple CarPlay are standard. The manual transmission is now 6‑speed. Honda's new third-generation Dual Clutch Transmission with 7 gears is available as an option. This gearbox, among other things, has a Walking Mode, i.e. it allows you to move forward very slowly (at a speed of 1.8 km/h) and backwards at a speed of 1.2 km/h (with a manual gearbox, rear the move is still carried out using a starter), and also use the “start-stop” mode.

Finally, “Golda” received an electric windshield, which is now adjustable in both height and tilt!

True, the basic configuration now does not even have a central trunk. And the total volume of luggage capacity has been reduced by 40 liters - to 110 liters. According to the creators, this is to make the motorcycle more convenient to use in the city and on weekend trips without a lot of luggage.

The flagship naked Honda CB1000R has been completely redesigned in a new original style not of a “street fighter”, but of a neo-retro cafe racer, called Neo Sports Cafe.

The weight of the motorcycle decreased by 12 kg, engine output increased to 145 hp. s., and the torque is now 104 Nm. The naked has a new gearbox with shortened stages, a slipper clutch, electronic throttle and a four-mode engine control unit. The bike features fully adjustable Showa suspension at the front and rear. The braking system includes dual-channel ABS.

The Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin Adventure Sport is billed as an even more adventure and off-road motorcycle and differs from the basic version by a six-liter larger tank, heated grips, roll bars and a larger windshield.

INDIAN

Historically, the first American motorcycle manufacturer slightly updated the line with new colors and special versions, and also released a new model in the bobber style - well, it’s not proper for the legendary cruiser builder to make scramblers and cafe racers.

The new Indian Scout Bobber is equipped with a 1130 cc V-twin engine producing 100 hp. s., faceted gas tank, quilted leather seat and thick knobby tires.

KAWASAKI

Kawasaki, like all the world's major motorcycle manufacturers, except, perhaps, KTM, is developing a neo-retro theme and has rolled out two devices built on the basis of the naked Z900 - the classic Z900RS and the café racer Z900RS Cafe. The new products do not lag behind competitors in either design or technical equipment and have several engine operating modes, LED optics, a slipper clutch and radial brake calipers. The engine is a 4‑cylinder in-line, with a volume of 948 “cubes”, derated relative to the Z900 to 110 hp. With. and 73 Nm.

Kawasaki Z900RS

Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe

The flagship sportbike Kawasaki Ninja ZX10R received an additional two letters to the name - SE, and to them - for the first time on a production motorcycle - Showa KECS (Kawasaki Electronic Control Suspension) suspension with 15 degrees of adjustment and a solenoid valve that allows you to adjust damping settings on the fly with a response speed in one millisecond.

The motorcycle also received a two-way quickshifter and new forged 7-spoke Marchesini wheels. The engine has not changed: in-line “four” with a capacity of 200 hp. With. produces 158 Nm of torque. Curb weight of the Kawasaki Ninja ZX10R SE is 208 kg.

Another new product is the continuation of the Kawasaki series of turbocharged motorcycles. Now the Kawasaki Ninja H2 SX sports tourer.

The significantly redesigned 998 cm³ turbo engine is now smoother and more economical: 207 hp. s., 138 Nm, 6 l per 100 km. The top SE version is equipped with the first full-color TFT instrument panel on a Kawasaki motorcycle, combining an analogue tachometer and a multifunctional on-board computer.

Among the interesting electronic systems, in addition to the “cornering” ABS, is the KCMF (Kawasaki Cornering Management Function) system, which analyzes the power supplied, the angle of rotation and the force on the brake cylinder, after which it adjusts all systems in real time for the optimal transition from acceleration to braking and back.

KTM

The Austrians presented their new, perhaps the most ultimate mid-size naked bike in the class, the 790 Duke. The in-line “two” with a volume of 799 “cubes” produces 105 liters. With. and 86 Nm. With a wheelbase of 1475 mm, a weight of 169 kg and a fork stem shorter than that of the 390 Duke, the new product should have a fantastically mischievous disposition. And by next year, a competitor to the Yamaha T7, the KTM 790 Adventure R, should appear on this platform.

ROYAL ENFIELD

The Indian brand Royal Enfield, known for its conservatism, presented two new motorcycles built on the same platform - the classic-looking Interceptor GT 650 and the Continental GT 650 cafe racer.

The Interceptor GT 650 is a revived legend of the 1960s, a motorcycle with a 47 hp twin-cylinder engine. With. Although it was seriously redesigned, it has not undergone any fundamental changes since then. The chassis was developed on the basis of the Continental GT model.

Both motorcycles have a 41mm telescopic fork, a pair of backpack-type shock absorbers, ABS disc brakes, a 6-speed gearbox and an exhaust system with two exhaust pipes.

SUZUKI

As part of the “coffee” trend, Suzuki also came out with the new SV650X - a middleweight cafe racer with a V-twin as a power unit. This neo-retro model was inspired by road racing cars of the 1970s. The new product borrowed the engine from the standard SV650, received a new front fork with adjustable spring preload and clip-ons.

Two new “beginner” models - the naked GSX-S125 and the GSX-R125 sportbike - complement Suzuki's line of small-capacity equipment.

Suzuki GSX-S125

Suzuki GSX-R125_6

The rest of the company's models have undergone more or less significant changes. Thus, the popular crossover V-Strom 650 received an upgraded, more powerful and torquey engine, traction control and an updated design. The V-Strom 250 model with an in-line “double” has been added to the line of adventure bikes.

Suzuki's sporty flagship is the new GSX-R1000R. The device received a rich inheritance from the champion superbike GSX-RR, including variable valve timing. The list of modern electronics includes 10-mode traction control and corner ABS.

YAMAHA

This time the company with three tuning forks on its logo showed almost nothing completely new. Unfortunately, the T7 enduro has not yet entered the production line and is expected to appear on it only in a year. The MT series models received minor updates, a facelift and new colors.

The most interesting of the traditional new products—the Venture grand tourer, a competitor to the Honda Gold Wing—it seems that it will not reach Russia this year. It's a pity. Fans of the brand have been waiting for such a device for a long time. And, judging by the description and photo, it turned out to be fire: air V-twin with a volume of 1854 cm³ (170 Nm), 6‑speed gearbox, final drive driven by a belt, “parking mode” — movement forward and backward with a minimum speed from the electric starter, heated steering wheel grips and seats, adjustable glass, electronic gas, cruise control, etc., etc....

But the three-wheeled futuristic Niken vehicle, which received its name from the Japanese style of fencing with two swords, may well be welcome to us. The main feature of the motorcycle is the front suspension: two telescopic stays on each of the two front wheels. The suspension works according to the Ackermann principle and allows you to tilt the motorcycle by 45º. The front wheel track is 410 mm, i.e. the device must fit between the rows. The engine is a retuned excellent in-line “three” from the MT-09. The list of modern electronics includes: quickshifter, traction control, three engine modes, cruise control. Niken is not entirely unique - there are already quite a few three-wheeled cars of this kind: Piaggio MP3, Kymco CV3, Quadro3, Peugeot Metropolis. There is even a four-wheeled machine - Quadro4 Steinbock. But all of them, unlike the Yamaha Niken, are scooters both in appearance and fit, and in technical terms, i.e. they are equipped with a CVT and have a small (up to 400 cm³) engine capacity. Niken is exactly a motorcycle: tall, with a large engine, motorcycle-like seating position and rear suspension.

The most dynamic and heaviest motorcycle in the USSR

The older generation can say that during the Soviet Union, heavy motorcycles were considered a good purchase. At the same time, citizens paid attention specifically to Soviet models. This can be explained by various reasons - a shortage of foreign cars on the market and the high quality of domestic products. Demand was especially high in rural areas, where they were used to perform various tasks. They were primarily used as a means of transportation. But there were citizens who used them to transport various goods. It was possible to place the necessary things in a trailer stroller or make a flat platform out of it to transform it into a body.

Ural M 62

What teenager during the USSR did not dream of owning a bike? There were various models on the market, but they were all expensive. For adults, completely different modifications of motorcycles were presented - with a trailer in the form of a sidecar.

Powerful four-stroke engines equipped on Soviet motorcycles could pull vehicles through mud and snow. Unfortunately, these vehicles had one drawback - low speed. But for that period they had good dynamics. Let's consider what maximum speed motorcycles made in the USSR could reach.

At that time, there were two large brands that produced equipment of this type. We are talking about the companies Ural and Dnepr. Both of them represented entire lines of models. It’s not worth remembering each of them one by one, but you can focus on three interesting projects. The first model is Ural M 62. The model was released in 1961. The equipment offered an engine with a volume of 650 cubic meters. The power reached 28 horsepower. This value was enough for motorcycles to accelerate to 95 kilometers per hour.

Dnepr MT 11

Many motorcycle models at that time had exactly this speed. However, this indicator is a passport indicator. The leaders in terms of maximum performance include two motorcycles - the Dnepr MT 11 and the Ural M 66. The engine power of the Dnepr MT 11 motorcycle was 32 horsepower. With such equipment, it reached 105 kilometers/hour. The Ural M 66 almost kept up with it in terms of technical stuffing. The motor in the design had similar power, and the acceleration was also 105 kilometers per hour.

Many who managed to catch these vehicles in full bloom can say that they actually developed more power. And this statement is partly true. The fact is that the vehicle's passport data did not always coincide with the actual acceleration and performance indicators.

Ural M 66

Thus, the Dnepr MT 11 and Ural M 66 were considered the fastest and heaviest motorcycles in the USSR. Of course, if we consider garage modifications, of which there were plenty at that time, we can find a more advanced motorcycle. Many people started tuning vehicles on their own and got quite good results.

Such transport has become widespread outside the USSR - in Europe, the countries of South and North America.

The Dnepr line of heavy motorcycles dates back to the 1960s. Such transport has become widespread outside the USSR - in Europe, the countries of South and North America. Such popularity ensured the further development of the manufacturer. The production of the MT 11 model began in the mid-1980s.

Despite the fact that the engine power in the design was less, it was much more productive at low speeds

The dimensions of the Dnepr MT 11 are as follows: length 2.5 meters, width 1.7 meters, and height 1.2 meters. The manufacturer offered 19-inch spoked wheels. Despite the fact that the engine power in the design was less, it was much more productive at low speeds. The fuel tank could hold 19 liters. Average consumption reached 8 liters per 100 km. However, consumption could vary depending on the design and driving style.

This model is a continuation of a whole line of motorcycles. The first copy was produced in 1971 at the Irbit Motor Plant

The Ural M-66 motorcycle had high cross-country ability, so it could move over rough terrain. This model is a continuation of a whole line of motorcycles. The first copy was produced in 1971 at the Irbit Motor Plant.

This vehicle consumed 5.8 liters per 100 km. The fuel tank could hold 22 liters of fuel. The electrical equipment in the motorcycle was designed for a voltage of 6 Volts. With empty tanks, the motorcycle weighed as much as 320 kg. Maximum load - 255 kg. The model was produced until 1973, after which the Ural M-67 was introduced to the market.

With empty tanks, the motorcycle weighed as much as 320 kg. Maximum load - 255 kg

Bottom line . In the segment of heavy motorcycles from the times of the Soviet Union, there are several models that were leaders in maximum speed. Among them are products from Ural and Dnepr companies.
