But it has always been considered difficult to manufacture and develop, as evidenced by the rather high prices for exhaust of imported and domestic snowmobiles. Everyone has seen a kind of exhaust system on modern two-stroke engines and how this equipment drives... All modern domestic and imported snowmobiles are equipped with an exhaust system with a resonator. The resonator and muffler play one of the most important roles on two-stroke engines, more than just a device for reducing exhaust noise. The principle of operation of the resonator is based on preventing the ejection of the fuel mixture during purging and returning useful fuel to the combustion chamber.

In the exhaust phase, gases rush through the exhaust pipe into a straight cone, where they expand, their speed and pressure decrease. Having passed the cylindrical part of the resonator, part of the gases passes into the exhaust pipe and then into the muffler. Another part of the gases, reflected from the reverse cone, approaches the outlet window and “locks” it at the moment the purge windows open (and they always open later than the outlet window). Thus, due to this geometry of the “resonance pipe”, a standing wave (resonance) is formed at certain speeds, which ensures the best operating mode of the engine when the ejected fuel-air mixture returns back to the combustion chamber. At the same time, the power increases by more than 30% compared to a two-stroke engine not equipped with a resonator, which is quite a lot.

The standard muffler of a Buran snowmobile does not allow full use of the engine resource due to the lack of a resonator in the original exhaust system.

Seat modification. You can try to make a change to the standard structure by upholstering it with a new material like leather or a good substitute, and installing a new filler. But the original seat has a significant mass. To reduce the weight of the motorcycle, it makes sense, as in the case of the fuel tank, to select a part from other equipment.

Painting IZ Jupiter-5 is a good thing. Here you can let your imagination run wild. But the best results can be achieved if you know the laws of color combinations or consult with a professional designer. Otherwise, instead of a stylish combination of contrasting colors, you can end up with an eye-catching color scheme.

By increasing the engine's capabilities and improving the performance of the tank, attention eventually turns to the exhaust system. What is forward flow?

A cocurrent is a design for moving liquids and gases in a single direction. From the factory, the motorcycle comes with a standardized exhaust system, but subsequently customizing the bike and increasing its power from the original configuration is no longer enough - the amount of exhaust gases increases. Specialists install a direct-flow system, visually and technically improving your motorcycle (power will increase by 3 - 5 horsepower), but it is much more pleasant to do it yourself. This task will not require much time, the materials are quite accessible, all that remains is to arm yourself with information.

How to make a muffler for a motorcycle?

· Unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the old factory muffler.

· Pull out the standard internals - tubes and other offal.

· Buy a thin-walled tube or make it yourself from scrap garage materials. Stainless steel or aluminum without defects are the best option. Furrows, chips and holes will give the direct flow an unpleasant metallic noise, and incorrect tube dimensions will impede gas exhaust. · The essence of the work of high-quality direct flow is to manage gases and liquids in a motor-heat exchanger, directing the substances blocked by the wall in a single direction.

Refinement and modification of suspension

The original suspension of the IZH Jupiter-5 motorcycle is reliable and has good maintainability. It is not difficult to restore it, but better results can be obtained by making some changes to the design.

Installation of adjustable gas shock absorbers. Today on sale it is not difficult to find gas shock absorbers with suitable parameters that can be used in the design of the rear suspension for tuning IZ Jupiter-5. I read earlier on the Internet that the resonator for the P5 engine (one-pipe design) is very long and awkward.

Today at work during a smoke break I came across a program for Android (I use a tablet) to calculate the resonator for a 2T motor. The program contains four calculation methods - Grigoriev, Voitenko, Blair and complex. I calculated using a complex method.

I’ll say right away that the calculation is carried out according to the purge and exhaust phases. I have modified, seriously modified valve timing; these drawings will not work at all on a stock engine.

I wanted something like this: a resonator, but of short length, and maximum output at low speeds (3-4.5 thousand) because installing a huge pipe doesn’t fit the style, I don’t want to run it under the frame; I plan to use it not only on asphalt. I will say that my wishes regarding the short exhaust were dashed by calculations.

The two-cylinder two-stroke engine with a working volume of 347.6 cubic meters was installed on the motorcycle. see most often has air cooling. The number of models released in recent years of production that used liquid cooling is negligible. The power that the engine develops is 24 hp. With. – can be increased by making some simple modifications:

  • Increase the compression ratio by removing about 1.5 mm from the adjacent plane of the block head. But this will require switching to fuel with an octane rating of AI-95 and making changes to the design of the crank mechanism. First of all, replacing the crankshaft bearings. You will also have to select spark plugs with a different heat rating.
  • Replacing crankshaft bearings. There is an opinion that only high-quality imported bearings can cope with increased loads. In fact, domestic developers have installed bearings with a large margin of safety. If you manage to purchase high-quality Russian analogues, they will do the job perfectly. Trying to change the size of the crankshaft journals is simply harmful. The thickness of their hardening layer is small and when more than 1 mm is removed from the surface of the journal, the service life of the part will sharply decrease.
  • Replacement or modification of pistons. The stock parts aren't that bad. Don't rush to look for a replacement for them. To increase power, it will be enough to lighten the pistons by removing casting flash and excess material from them. Parts should be carefully adjusted according to weight. It is desirable that the difference does not exceed hundredths of a gram. Such simple engine tuning will be more effective than installing a zero-resistance air filter or a direct-flow muffler. Although it is, of course, possible to install forward flow on IZ Jupiter-5.
  • Installing another carburetor. If possible, it's worth shelling out for a good Mikuni carburetor. Don't go for a large diffuser size. The standard diameter of 32 mm will be quite sufficient. But it’s definitely worth removing the protrusions on the intake and exhaust manifolds and polishing the internal channels of these parts. This will not only provide an increase in power, but will also help reduce fuel consumption below five liters.
  • Replacement of the ignition system. Installing BSZ on IZ Jupiter-5 only makes sense if you intend to use imported components. Most likely, the quality of domestic components will reduce all the advantages of the contactless ignition system to zero and the rework will not give the desired result.

Do not forget that increased power will improve the acceleration dynamics of the motorcycle, but will not provide a significant increase in speed. To increase speed, you will have to change the transmission gear ratios, selecting different sprockets for the gearbox and rear wheel.

A legendary motorcycle that looks like it just rolled off the assembly line yesterday will attract no less attention than the tuned version. It’s just that how to properly restore equipment by performing qualified repairs often turns out to be much more difficult than remodeling it to your taste.

Independent work

Making a motorcycle muffler can be quite simple, but will it fully meet the requirements for it? Get ready for the fact that the first product you make with your own hands will require certain modifications and many hours of adjustments. However, practice shows that the second or third time it is possible to make a muffler for a motorcycle that initially meets all the required parameters. Sometimes it happens that it is not possible to make the required muffler for a motorcycle at all - this may be due to a lack of experience or certain design features of the equipment. In this case, it is better to buy a finished product from a well-known manufacturer or order the production of a direct flow from a real professional.

Are there any advantages to direct flow?

Why are some motorcyclists desperate to turn up the volume on their steed? Their classic argument: “Loud exhaust saves lives.” This argument works in occasional situations that are typical on our roads, but there is no scientific evidence of the benefits of loud exhaust in avoiding accidents.

Moreover, this argument presupposes the correct behavior of road users when they hear a motorcycle roar. But this is an extremely risky assumption: the driver may be frightened by a loud roar next to him and behave completely differently from what is expected of him, which can be dangerous for the motorcyclist. A loud exhaust may be noticeable, but it is unlikely to be a more effective means of preventing accidents than safe driving skills coupled with reflective elements on equipment and a mandatory helmet on the head.

Even if the "loud exhaust saves lives" argument works in some situations, it doesn't do enough to compensate for the unpleasantness of it. To be honest, many motorcyclists use forward flow to attract attention and show off their own “coolness”, without caring about their safety or those around them.

This justification for using direct flow is too selfish, don’t you think? On one side of the scale is the joy of motorcyclists, on the other is the peace of those around them. Which of these is most important?

So much I want to say and so little time! It all started, as you already understood, with the modification of the manifold to an increased diameter of the pipe for better exhaust gases and reduced flow resistance. It was logical to continue the refinement and make a direct-flow muffler. Which is actually what I did the other day! Something like inspiration came to me. At first I began to develop the future concept in my head, but how often does it change during the work process! I wanted to find a seamless pipe without seams (this was the first snag). There weren’t many options until I saw an ordinary fire extinguisher at work. And then an idea appeared and began to develop rapidly in my head! Since the total length of the muffler, according to my calculations, should be at least 400 mm, and fire extinguishers with such a length are too thick, it was decided to take two small ones and make a completely assembled (dismountable) muffler. As I already said, two old unnecessary fire extinguishers were taken, the powder was released and the valves were unscrewed. Then they cut off the back parts. It looks like this:

Then you need to somehow make the ends on the muffler; for this, 6mm thick sheet metal was taken and two pancakes were cut out, which were then turned into flanges! Why such large holes, you ask? So that later you can safely insert tubes of DIFFERENT DIAMETERS. on both sides and fill with refractory material. The flanges will be tightly welded.

Pipes of different diameters will be inserted into these two jars! Why is this done, you ask? I want to achieve only low frequencies and get rid of high frequencies. A pipe with a diameter of 70mm will be installed at the outlet, and a pipe with a diameter of 40mm will be installed at the inlet to the muffler. The joint in the form of a narrow transition in the middle will cause a curvature of the flow of passing gases! The holes in the tubes will also be of different diameters. That's all for today.
