Fuel consumption Java 350 per 100 Kilometers • Modifications and hybrids

Jawa 350/639 (1991)

In 1991, Jawa released the 350/639. It was a mid-size naked bike, equipped with a 2-stroke engine with two cylinders. The engine was cooled by air. The engine displacement was 344 cubic meters. cm. The cylinder diameter was 58 mm, and the piston stroke was 65 mm. The engine was started using a kickstarter. The carburetor was responsible for supplying fuel. The maximum torque was 32 Nm at 4750 rpm. The motorcycle had a 4-speed gearbox. The main drive to the rear wheel was carried out by a chain. The braking system of the model was represented by a disc brake on the front wheel and a drum brake on the rear. The volume of the fuel tank was 17 liters. The reserve was 2 liters. Fuel consumption was 4 liters per 100 km. The motorcycle had two stainless steel exhaust pipes. Exhaust toxicity was 92.8 CO2 g/km. The maximum speed to which this model was capable of accelerating was 130 km/h. The motorcycle was available in several color options: red, white and black.

But rumors about the existence of such models as Java 360 or Java 380, if we talk about cubic capacity figures, are no more than rumors that have been circulating on the Internet since its invention.

Repair and tuning

All Soviet-era equipment, even imported, is distinguished by its simplicity of design. This is both good and bad. Maintainability in this case goes hand in hand with outdated technologies, which these days are not used even by Chinese and Indian motorcycle manufacturers specializing in extremely low-cost equipment.

Repair

Who will drag Java 350 to the service? Such motorcycles are repaired in the garage, with love and strong words when something doesn’t work out. But seriously, even an inexperienced motorcyclist can understand the design of a Czechoslovakian bike, because it is extremely simple. The wear resistance of some components is low, but they are very easy to repair or replace.

Spare parts

It is very difficult to find original spare parts for a model that was discontinued a long time ago, and you only need to look for it on message boards, owner forums, and so on. They are almost never sold in stores, although there are Chinese analogues of unknown quality. However, they are still not suitable for restoring a motorcycle to its original condition.

Tuning

In the past, this bike was often tuned, especially in rural areas, but now it seems blasphemous. Such motorcycle equipment, which has survived to this day, needs to be carefully restored, and not turned into a traveling exhibit of the “Collective Farm Tuning of the Year” exhibition. And those who do not agree with this, and intend to turn an old Java into a “chopper type” or “sportbike type” with the help of an angle grinder and a sledgehammer, need to be beaten for a long time and thoughtfully with an adjustable wrench until they realize the fallacy of their intentions.

The history of the motorcycle

The history of the legendary Soviet motorcycle began back in 1934. Then the first model appeared - Jawa 350 SV. It was a bike with a single-cylinder engine producing 12 horsepower. Its maximum speed was 100 km/h, and it weighed 125 kg. On such an iron horse, Soviet racers won international competitions.

Due to the war, Jawa production was suspended until 1948, but the new Jawa 350 Type 12 did not stay on the assembly line for long. Serial production resumed again in 1954 with the release of Java 350 354/06. From this year, the motorcycle began to enjoy success in the countries of the USSR and took its place in the motorcycle market. The bike was equipped with a two-cylinder engine with a displacement of 350 cc. cm and an air cooling system. Power increased to 16 hp, and then to 18, when new carburetors began to be installed on the motorcycle.

The legend has been modified several times. In 1958, cone shock absorbers were replaced with piston ones. The appearance of Java at that time was considered progressive and even somewhat futuristic. By the way, it is worth remembering the famous monument to Viktor Tsoi - the famous musician sits on Java 354/06.

History of appearance and description of the motorcycle

The motorcycle's history dates back to 1929, when Frantisek Janicek acquired a license for the production of two-wheeled vehicles from the Wanderer company. The first motorcycles were not very popular due to their high cost, complexity of design and operation.

During the occupation of Czechoslovakia, the factory stopped producing equipment altogether and was completely transferred to the needs of the German military department. The jawa 638, familiar in the Soviet Union, began production in 1984 and had a modification of the jawa 638 5 00. This model replaced the previous machine with the index 350-633. Here the driving and performance characteristics of the motorcycle have been thoroughly improved.

The appearance of the motorcycle, although not very outstanding, is nevertheless eye-catching. Among its other brethren, it is distinguished by elements characteristic only of Java: a large headlight and turn signals protruding from it, a harmoniously located instrument panel above the headlight, a large, neatly shaped tank and a double, straight seat.

There are compartments under the seat and on both sides of the tank for storing tools or belongings. The maximum speed that the Java 350 638 motorcycle can reach according to its passport is 130 km/h, but many enthusiasts tuning the Java 638 achieved much higher figures.

The Java 638 engine is air-cooled, and this fact also left its mark on the appearance of the motorcycle. The engine is completely open, with clearly visible structural elements. The engine also operates at higher speeds than all Soviet motorcycles produced at that time.

The Java 638 gearbox leg served as a kick starter. To do this, it was necessary to press it a little into the gearbox housing and lift it up. In the Soviet Union there was only one drawback for the owners of this motorcycle - the almost complete lack of spare parts and zip kits for repairs.

The motorcycle has proven itself remarkably well in motorsports. This bike was used in both speedway and stage racing. Motorcycles with sidecars were also used for racing.

Repair and maintenance

The 12-volt generator of the 638 engine was considered one of the best of its time, and the engine generally corresponded to its time, reliable and lightweight. Although there are also disadvantages. The carburetor is very complex for such a simple motorcycle as the Java 350 638. The carburetor does not change the technical characteristics much. It has small jets that become clogged with the smallest particles. The main disadvantage is starting the engine. When the temperature drops deep into the minus, starting the engine turns into torture with shamanic dances and a tambourine. Gasoline has to be poured through the spark plug holes. Over time, starting problems appear in warm weather; cleaning and adjusting the carburetor does not bring much benefit. The instructions include advice to clamp the ventilation holes when starting the engine, but this does not bring any tangible benefit.

Naturally, over time this defect only becomes stronger. Some solve this issue by replacing the carburetor with a carburetor of a different system.

There is a problem with the lack of tires for Java on sale; they use tires from Izhevsk motorcycles for the Java 638 motorcycle. The technical characteristics of the tires are appropriate, except for the nipple for the camera, it is larger. You have to widen the hole in the wheel rim. With the development of motorcycle power, brakes improved more slowly and the Java has a problem with the rear brakes. When you suddenly try to stop, the brake cover turns out the reaction lever, the cable breaks, the wheels are blocked, then the movement is skidding and there is every chance of a coup and fall. This happens due to an oversight by the motorcyclist when the rear wheel axle nut is loosely tightened, but the design itself is flawed. There may simply not be enough threads on the axle.

It is also worth mentioning the steering lock, which can be pulled sharply to the left enough to break the clutch. The drive drum teeth wear out very quickly. Perhaps the reason is the quality of the metal.

Current information on models

Let's talk about which models can be purchased now and why they are interesting:

JAWA 125 Dandy. Dandy is a simple classic and one of the company's best-selling motorcycles in the 125 cc class today. Simplicity, convenience and reliability are combined in this model and make it attractive to thousands of buyers around the world. It is equipped with a single-cylinder, four-stroke, air-cooled engine. Unit power is 9.4 kW at 8200 rpm. Equipped with an electric starter. The gearbox is very decent, five-speed. The brakes are reliable, disc. The maximum speed of this motorcycle is 108 km/h. Java motorcycle video review can be viewed at the end of the article.

  • To mark the eightieth anniversary of the company, a commemorative model of a 350 cc motorcycle, the JAWA 350 Lux, was released. For the anniversary, the motorcycle was updated not only externally. He received a new brake system. The 17-kilowatt two-cylinder engine with a 4-speed semi-automatic transmission is still good. The suspension is also good. The front has a travel of 150 mm, and the rear – 80 mm. Overall, this is a classic 350, moderately chromed and without any obvious flaws. Still, for the anniversary, the engineers tried their best and made a really great motorcycle. Sales of the RA 350 Lux motorcycle were going quite well. The motorcycle is still very popular among connoisseurs of the brand.
  • Another new and very interesting Java motorcycle is also worth mentioning in our review. This is a Java 650 Dakar from 2010. Lightweight, with good brakes and quite fast (165 km/h), it deserves attention. This motorcycle belongs to the enduro class and has excellent off-road qualities. The engine is single-cylinder, four-stroke, with a power of 47.5 hp at 6500 rpm. Front shock absorber – 150 mm telescopic fork. The front brake is double-disc, the rear is single-disc.

The Java motorcycle whose photo you see below is the same Dakar.

The modern Java may not be the fastest motorcycle in the world, nor the most advanced motorcycle in existence, but in our hearts it will forever remain the best of its era.

It is known that the Czech government provided financial assistance to the management of the enterprise, and new models can be expected in the coming years.

The undoubted advantage of this brand in our country is that spare parts for the Java motorcycle are still produced and supplied to us, are inexpensive and are available in most services.

Thanks to this, there is still a great demand even for old models, which are twenty or more years old. In Russia and Ukraine, thousands of classic motorcycles imported between the 70s and 90s of the 20th century are still preserved.

Professional repair of Java motorcycles, performed in a good workshop, can extend the already long life of this miracle of engineering.

Motorcycle Java 350 real fuel consumption per 100 km: reviews

  • Valery, Petrozavodsk. This is my first motorcycle. Model manufactured in 1986, used for 2 years, we purchased this miracle for 16 thousand rubles. My brother has the same model. This is a great device, I hope I won’t regret purchasing it at all. They have the ability to steer like a bicycle - it is light, dynamic and mobile. The saddle is comfortable, and Java itself looks solid and sporty. And this is with a completely factory appearance, no tuning. Perhaps such motorcycles are no longer produced, and you rarely see such rarities on the roads. After riding in Java, I realized that I didn’t need any German or Japanese motorcycle at an exorbitant price. In short, this machine was created for people with a soul, with a biker soul. Fuel consumption is a maximum of 4-6 liters in urban areas.
  • Olga, Tver region. Java-350 is the optimal motorcycle of its time, it is still quite relevant in the current period. The only drawback is that it is very fragile and often breaks. My father bought it for my 16th birthday. The model dates back to the USSR, so I won’t judge it in a spartan way. The motorcycle was used and in good condition. However, I came to the conclusion to start refining it - first I paid attention to the appearance. By order, my motorcycle was repainted in silver metallic (it used to be red), neon lighting was installed on the wheels, and rear-view mirrors were zero. By the way, at first I taught how to drive on MT. After upgrading the appearance, I started refining the chassis - I changed almost everything on the inside, from shock absorbers to batteries. At the same time, I got acquainted with the structure of the motorcycle. On this motorcycle you can dynamically increase your adrenaline, especially if you are racing at two o’clock in the morning along an empty highway, and even along a white stripe. It was a good time at that time, and I wanted it not to end. The motorcycle consumed a maximum of 4-6 liters in urban conditions. I skated dynamically, maybe that’s why I spent so much.
  • Valeria, Ussuriysk. The Java 350 is a light and easy-to-handle motorcycle, very impressive and torquey. Noises and vibrations are acceptable for such a car class. Fuel consumption is insignificant, about 3-4 liters per hundred kilometers. Unfortunately, it causes a lot of trouble. The main drawback is the high stands for the head optics, and the headlight itself is large - because of this, visibility is limited forward, or when you look at the road. Fortunately, Java can be easily modified - it is possible to make zero racks and install smaller shades. Indeed, the lighting will be worse. In any case, I like the bike. We purchased it together with my husband, this happened in 1998. The two-wheeler underwent restoration - painting and modification of the chassis. We own Java every year, for six months in the city. We take turns riding with my husband. The power unit operates completely without noise and vibration, unless you increase the speed too much. I immediately liked the design, I note the streamlined shape and elegant chrome elements, it’s like a Harley Davidson for beginners. There are comfortable handles under the rear seat, you can hold onto them tightly without your hands slipping. I was also pleasantly surprised by the ergonomic shape of the seat, under which there is a secluded luggage space. Shock absorbers are closed. By the way, in the trunk it is possible to transport keys and other consumables and parts, as well as a canister of oil. Genuine tires look absolutely wonderful, nostalgia from the heart, so to speak. The motorcycle steers like a bicycle, with no heaviness at all when cornering. There is an anti-theft system that can be turned on if you lock the steering wheel with a key at an angle of 45 degrees. Repairing a Java 350 will not cause much trouble. The power unit has an excellent reserve of maximum power and traction. Model produced in 1987, owned by 13 liters. They took it from the first owner. Fuel consumption in urban environments is 4-6 liters per hundred kilometers.
  • Ilya, Engels. The model was produced in 1994, I purchased this motorcycle in 2015 for 5 thousand rubles. I use it periodically for three years. Naturally, I ride it exclusively in autumn, spring and summer. A lot of positive excitement and impressions. Java came to me at the age of 14. At that time, like the rest of the backyard boys, I dreamed of a two-wheeled friend. At that time, I understood them quite well, read all sorts of magazines and reviews. I clearly knew and had already decided which model I needed. To be budget-friendly and at the same time meet all my needs. Of course, I also looked at other models - in particular, Jupiter is also a good model. However, Java 350 cost me 5 thousand rubles. I added money from the scholarship and also borrowed money from my grandfather. The motorcycle was practically useless, I was immediately happy. At that time I went home in my Java. The feelings from the first trip were simply indelible, just a storm of impressions, I wanted to ride and ride it without ceasing, just so as not to miss school. The Java-350 motorcycle has excellent traction from the very bottom, clearly more thoroughbred than that of the Izh. The same applies to kinetics; in the current case, Java is ahead of all its closest opponents - Jupiter, Planet and other generally accepted Soviet models. A gearbox with exemplary selected gear ratios, there are no complaints about it. The technique did not give me any particular difficulties. As for repairs, I mainly changed the spark plugs. You also had to tighten the chain; you can adapt to all this - a couple of trifles. Today, Java, of course, is already outdated. However, I ride it from time to time, but I’m still thinking about buying a more current motorcycle, I’m a lover of fresh touches. Java consumes between 4-6 liters of gasoline. It is allowed to use AI-76.
  • Arkady, Tambov. Java 350 can be described in three words - dynamic, small-sized and impressive. Of course, there are disadvantages - the motorcycle is absolutely unsafe, it has a rather meager two-stroke engine, which is easy to service. As a child, I dreamed of such an acquisition, but at that time something did not work out. Either there was no money, then interests and views changed, then there was no time, etc. And many more dissuaded me from purchasing - many of my friends and relatives often got into accidents on these motorcycles. Java, in my mind, turned out to be in such an emergency that I remembered an old Soviet joke on this topic - some man calls the Java motorcycle factory and asks - Greetings, they are bothering you from the morgue, how many motorcycles have you given away today? The factory responded that they had given away three motorcycles. In response to this, an upset voice followed - it means that another one is skating somewhere, apparently, we will have to return the tickets to the opera. What I mean is that statistics show that every second owner of a Java was involved in an accident, and with a not very pleasant outcome. The Java 350 is a light and impressive motorcycle, revvy, and rides pleasantly on clay, fine gravel, sand and other off-road terrain. The power unit loves speed. The thing is that during a sharp turn it can be thrown into a skid, which is why an accident occurs. Four-cylinder two-stroke engine. If you maintain the proportions of oil and gasoline, the power unit will last a long time and trouble-free. In addition, it is possible to count on a good degree of acceleration, in relation to those years, of course. The Java brand has always tried to produce motorcycles with a sporty character. However, due to this dynamism, Java often met with accidents. In short, this model may intrigue you at first glance, but how many people are sold on it. I rode this motorcycle to some extent, it was just time. I was even afraid to some extent. I had a model produced in 1983, costing 6 thousand rubles. I took it in 2010, gave it away in 2012. Fuel consumption is 3-4 l/100 km.
  • Gregory, St. Petersburg. Java 350 is a dynamic and maintainable motorcycle. And those who often get into accidents with it simply don’t know how to drive. However, we must recognize the fact that Java is unreasonably outdated for the current period. Because of this, it is considered that there is a reason to criticize Java for security, and quite honestly. However, I will still stand up for the motorcycle of my childhood. This is my first transport. He and his father took him in 2002. The previous owner of Java was a certain Kiev resident. The motorcycle was in excellent condition, so we also paid for transportation to St. Petersburg. During the acquisition period, the distance traveled was 35 thousand kilometers. The original speedometer showed a maximum speed of 180 km/h, but this is, of course, pure marketing (if it was still in the USSR). And the tachometer was lined up to 11 thousand rpm. The seat is leather. The power unit, indeed, was half-dead. The purchase cost $300. It was only necessary to restore the engine, while everything else was absolutely perfect. We had to wait a whole month for the power unit to be ready yet. After all, I agreed exclusively to genuine consumables and parts - in addition, my father himself insisted on this. We installed zero crankshaft and piston elements, ground the cylinders, and replaced the forks in the gearbox. In the chassis component, the pendulum was changed and zero rear shock absorbers were installed. After assembling and installing the engine, it was time to change the exterior - I repainted the bike and put stickers on the gas tank. Then the power unit had to be broken in properly, but after this procedure I began to drive like crazy - I just couldn’t bear it. However, the power unit is still unimpressive, and another disadvantage is the lightweight frame layout. It’s already scary to drive at 130 km/h, but you can drive further at your own peril and risk, but only with a passenger - with him the motorcycle is more stable and does not bounce at all on bumps. With careful driving, it is possible to fit 3 liters per hundred kilometers. By the way, this is exactly how many Asian scooters with 50 cc engines consume.
  • Evgeniy, Elektrostal. In principle, not a bad motorcycle. It looks very fashionable, but the appearance is still quite fashionable. However, I gave up my childhood dream on time; I owned the motorcycle from 2007 to 2010. Model made in 1985, from the second owner. I enjoyed the ride while riding this motorcycle. This was my first motorcycle. In terms of thoroughness, it practically didn’t bother me; I only changed consumables. The main thing is to set up the carburetor and chassis correctly, and everything will be ok. Setting the ignition requires maximum precision, and the motorcycle's driving performance is simply excellent compared to its closest opponents. The maximum speed was around 130 km/h, but when driving like this, the motorcycle was unstable and constantly scoured from side to side. All I did was try to keep Java on the track (I remember how elastic my hands were sweating at that time...). Fuel consumption is approximately 4-6 liters, reaching 6 liters of 76 gasoline. The costs for the service are very small, drive and be happy, as long as you don’t get into an accident. Fortunately, I didn’t get into an accident at all. Of course, there is an opportunity to purchase a more current Java - manufactured in 2011. However, everyone understands that this is only a deep modernization of Soviet Java. In the current period, I changed to a higher auto class, but a heavier motorcycle.

Refinement and tuning

Since the new Java 638 is very popular and the demand for this motorcycle does not subside, craftsmen continue to refine both the appearance of the motorcycle and its characteristics. On the Internet you can find many reviews and interesting technical solutions for tuning this motorcycle.

The change in appearance is sometimes so dramatic that it is difficult to believe that this motorcycle was once a classic java. The wheel rims are replaced with cast light alloy ones, the old front steering wheel fork is replaced with a more advanced, longer one, the seats and headlight are changed. There are simply no limits to the imagination of inventors.

To improve driving characteristics, drum brakes are replaced with higher quality disc brakes. To increase the service life of the engine, the bearing seats are changed, thereby improving their lubrication.

Review Java 350 638

Current reviews of the Java 638 characterize the motorcycle as a true friend, which has a pleasant appearance, thoughtful details and, unfortunately, their absence on the market. The biggest disadvantage is the current shortage of parts for this model. There are more than enough motorcycle owners, but even finding Java 638 spare parts in an online store is sometimes difficult. Owners also consider spare parts too expensive.

Motor Java 359 638

Unlike other Java models, this new product had an important feature - the Java 638 cylinders were made of aluminum. Thanks to this innovation, the weight of the structure has been significantly reduced, and thanks to the aluminum fins, air cooling has become even better.

The manufacturer has placed great emphasis on the engine, so its characteristics are competitive even today. Unlike its predecessors, this vehicle has surpassed them in all respects in terms of engine performance. At a maximum speed of 5,500 rpm, it had a torque of 31.38 Nm. But having a 2-stroke system has its advantage - the engine has better distribution of exhaust gases, and the fuel mixture distribution system is now even simpler. Also, repairing a 4-stroke engine will be much more difficult. And most importantly, the maximum speed declared by the manufacturer was 120 km/h, but some owners talk about reaching 130 km/h.

Design Java 638

The most important change in the new product was the presence of a front telescopic fork, which its predecessors did not have. Thanks to this, the Java 638 fork allows you to withstand driving both on a flat track and on a road with difficult surfaces. The general appearance of the motorcycle was quite popular at that time - the absence of plastic, a long and voluminous muffler and the ability to reach any part. The seat on the Java 638 was quite comfortable, you could take one passenger.

The manufacturer also took care to change the location of the fuel tank, which, with a volume of 17 liters, received a special fastening. Thus, when driving fast, almost no vibration is heard from the tank.

First steps to success

The first motorcycle from which the history of the famous JAWA plant began was presented at the Prague Motor Show in 1929. It was a JAWA 500cc OHV model with a teardrop tank, based on the German Wanderer model. The Java motorcycle was equipped with a single-cylinder 498.7 cc engine with a power of 18 hp, mounted in a double stamped frame. This motorcycle, which accelerated to 95 km/h, even then acquired the characteristic JAWA coloring - red with yellow accents. Subsequent series of this model were devoid of the shortcomings of their predecessor: in particular, a new muffler, an adjustable parabolic mirror appeared, and the front fork began to be assembled from a pressed sheet. However, it was quite an expensive motorcycle for that time, so there was a need to create a new model.

The next model, developed by the English designer George William Patchett, was the JAWA 175cc Villiers motorcycle. It was presented at the Prague Motor Show in 1932 and began to be positioned on the market as “the best motorcycle for little money.” It was a model with a three-channel two-stroke engine with a volume of 172.6 cc and a power of 5.5 hp, which weighed 70 kg and accelerated to 70-80 km/h. In the first year, three times as many JAWA 175cc Villiers were produced as the 500cc Java, as this model became in great demand due to its lightness, compact size and more affordable price. In subsequent years, the motorcycle acquired a saddle-shaped fuel tank, two long mufflers and other structural elements.

The 30s were marked by the release of other Java models - JAWA 250 Special, JAWA 350 OHV, JAWA 100 Robot and JAWA 250 Duplex. JAWA 250 Special was released in 1935, and at that time this model became one of the main products of the plant. The JAWA 250 Special had a 248 cc two-stroke single cylinder engine. cm with a power of 9 hp, the model weighed 95 kg and reached a maximum speed of 100 km/h. Subsequently, the motorcycle was equipped with an Amal carburetor, a new gas tank and muffler. Another motorcycle, the JAWA 350 OHV, released the same year, was intended for sports competitions. It was a model with a 15 hp engine, it weighed 142 kg and accelerated to 115 km/h. The motorcycle was produced not only in a standard version, but also in an improved version, which had more chrome parts, a larger headlight and foot-operated gear shift.

One of the most popular models of the late 30s was the JAWA 100 Robot motorcycle, designed primarily for young people. The CZ plant also produced similar models, and they were considered the best in the small motorcycle segment. JAWA specialists also decided to strengthen their position and developed the JAWA 100 Robot motorcycle, introduced in 1937. It was a model with a 98.8 cc single cylinder engine. cm with a power of 2.6 hp, which was started using pedals from a standstill or from acceleration. JAWA 100 Robot weighed only 49 kg, reached a maximum speed of 65 km/h, and it really turned out to be very popular among young people and light motorcycle enthusiasts. Before the outbreak of World War II, the plant managed to release another new product: JAWA 250 Duplex with a 246 cc engine and 9 hp. The model had a maximum speed of 100 km/h and weighed 115 kg.

Engine repair

One of the main operations when repairing an engine is changing the piston rings. The need for this arises, as a rule, after 15-20 thousand kilometers of the motorcycle (the maximum permissible gap in the ring lock is 0.8 mm). When replacing for the first time, you can use nominal size rings.

The first grinding of the cylinders is usually required after 30 thousand km. Pistons can operate for approximately 25-30 thousand km, the crankshaft and bearings - over 30 thousand km.

When replacing, boring or grinding cylinders, you should be guided by the factory table given here, which provides four repair sizes (the next one is 0.25 mm larger than the previous one) and within each of them three groups (A, B and C).

The repair number and group index are stamped on the bottom of the pistons produced by the plant. Piston rings are divided only by repair size numbers and are not marked. The diameter of the ground cylinders, by which the group is determined, is measured at a distance of 30 mm from their upper landing plane.

The nominal size cylinders installed on the new motorcycle also come in different groups (A, B and C) - their designation is indicated on the top. Within groups, the cylinder diameter can be larger than the nominal one - up to 0.019 mm. In accordance with this, pistons of the same group (A, B or C) are installed in the cylinders.

The plant also produces a repair piston pin with a diameter of 15.1 mm. The connecting rod upper head bushing Ø15.1 +0.027 / +0.016 is deployed under it.

If it becomes necessary to disassemble the engine crankcase into two halves along the connector (due to a breakdown of the gearbox, failure of the engine bearings), do not forget to remove the piston from the side where the puller is installed to remove the crankcase half. In this case, you should loosen or unscrew the two screws securing the partition between the crank cheeks to the crankcase. The rear screw is placed on the parting line of the crankcase under the carburetor cover, the front screw is also located on the parting line in close proximity to the upper front point of attachment of the engine to the frame.

One of the weak points in the engine is the crankshaft axle seals. A malfunction of the left oil seal is determined by increased smoke from the left muffler or by smoke passing from the ventilation hole under the carburetor cover. This is accompanied by a change in the oil level in the gearbox housing. A defect in the right oil seal manifests itself in the fact that the engine begins to operate unstably at low speeds and it is difficult to start.

When installing new oil seals, pay attention to the internal diameter: it should be no more than 24 mm. If there are no factory ones, you can use any other oil seals that are designed to work on a shaft with a diameter of 25 mm, have a width of no more than 10 mm and are made of oil- and petrol-resistant rubber (for example, IZh motorcycle oil seals). Since their outer diameter will most likely be less than 62 mm (the fitting diameter of the factory oil seal), they must be installed in the engine through an adapter ring, which is machined from duralumin.

To make engine repairs easier, we have produced a number of accessories shown in the pictures. All of them have proven themselves well.

Motorcycle chassis

The frame of this model is universal and made of durable components and materials. This was necessary in order for the motorcycle to work well with maximum load capacity and the installed sidecar. The telescopic fork Java 350 634 is made in such a way as to ensure confident movement not only around the city, but also in difficult terrain. Therefore, hydraulic front shock absorbers and a wheel with steel coil springs were installed.

To ensure good stability of the motorcycle on slippery roads, it was decided to install a wide rear fork support. By the way, the pendulum-type fork holds the rear wheel perfectly, which ensures traction.

The wheel with a steel hub has 40 spokes: 20 long with curved heads and 20 short straight. In a wheel with an aluminum hub, all spokes are the same length with curved heads.

This model of the “Ural” can be compared to a heavy horse, which, despite bad weather, confidently pulls the assigned load towards the goal. The Ural Tourist stroller model, being in service with the traffic police, has long been loved by drivers, and they have carried this love through the decades. Once upon a time, Ural designers took the German developments “BMW-R 71” as the basis for creating a motorcycle and to this day they are trying to bring their own bit of modernization to them. This leads to the fact that models of this type are incredibly popular abroad. The factory variation of the Ural Tourist motorcycle is the all-wheel drive “Tourist 2WD”.

The Ural Tourist motorcycle is an example of a classic heavy trailed motorcycle vehicle, created specifically to easily cover any distance, move over rough terrain and highways, traveling with a passenger. Rationalization decisions of Soviet citizens in the absence of a passenger resolved the issue of extra space quite quickly. The motorized vehicle carried any luggage and various sizes of rural luggage, once again emphasizing the excellent endurance of these vehicles.

Technical characteristics of the Ural Tourist are constantly undergoing factory innovations. The latest models of this class received an engine with a power of 45 horsepower and a volume of 750 cm3.

Nineteen-inch wheels also give confidence when moving. These qualities give the motorcycle a run-up speed of up to one hundred and twenty kilometers per hour. These components only increased the endurance of the motorcycle. With proper care, it is practically eternal.

Standard equipment for all trailers includes a luggage rack mounted on the spare wheel, a parking brake and handles for passenger convenience. The seat is double adjustable and split. The video with the Tourist demonstrates factory proposals for completing the motorcycle. This could be a crankcase or sidecar front or rear protection, a raised exhaust system, a waterproof cover and wheels with high cross-country ability. The original color palette is not large: blue, green, classic black and with the addition of circus.

A world-famous foreign manufacturer also took part in enhancing the reliability of the motorcycle, providing its internal parts with imported components.

Advantages and disadvantages

The Java 350 needs to be compared with contemporary motorcycles, and not with models produced today. And for its era, this bike was, without exaggeration, magnificent! It was not for nothing that it was so popular in the USSR, despite the fact that Soviet motorcyclists had to order spare parts for it from the allied Czechoslovakia using various tricks.

Advantages

  • Power. All sorts of “Voskhods” and “Izhi” could not compete with the Czechoslovak motorcycle on the road.
  • Significant service life of the engine and CPG, noticeably longer than most Soviet bikes.
  • Moderate mass, less than that of the Ural or Jupiter.

Flaws

  • Difficulty finding spare parts these days. You can find everything, but you have to run.
  • Compared to modern competitors, Java 634’s technical characteristics cannot stand any comparison even with the “Chinese”. The 638 model, however, does the same.
  • It’s simply a pity to use the completed Java 350 as a vehicle for every day.

Java 350 638-5

Java 350 638 motorcycles were produced in two modifications: Java 638-5-00 and Java 638-0-00. Java 638-5-00 is a transitional model between Java 634 and Java 638-0-00. The engine has undergone significant changes. Firstly, the diameter of the flywheel decreased by 4 millimeters, which had a positive effect on the engine response. The cylinders of the Java 350 638 motorcycle began to be made of aluminum alloy, with a pressed cast iron liner. The inclination of the cylinders was reduced to 15 degrees relative to the vertical, and the shape of the ribs on the cylinder heads was changed. All this made it possible to improve engine cooling. For a motorcycle, it is recommended to use 93 gasoline; the oil should be diluted in the following proportions: 1-40 after break-in and 1-33 during break-in. Engine power was increased by increasing the compression ratio and changing valve timing. Engine purging has been improved. Java 634 had two bypass channels in the cylinder, 638-5 had four, and a bearing was added in the middle crankshaft support. The two center bearings are separated by a labyrinth seal and are better lubricated by oil. Therefore, the engine crankcase and covers are of a different size and shape.

Other innovations include completely new electrical equipment, now 12 volt. The DC generator instead of the alternating current on the Java 634 is 2.8 times more powerful, although they are similar in size.

The silicon diode rectifier (six diodes) is located under the saddle. The voltage regulator is vibrating, also mounted on the saddle. Now even when driving at low speed the battery is charged well. For Java 634, battery charging began from 1700-1800 rpm, for Java 638-5 - from 1000 rpm.

The bike has a new taillight with side reflectors, a new battery and a horn. Headlamp with a power of 45/40 W. The size of the plugs has been brought into compliance with international standards; now their size is 6.3 mm.

The gearbox is almost unchanged, but the clutch has been redesigned. The total spring force is 15 percent less than that of the Java 634. The outer and inner diameters of the clutch discs have been increased. Accordingly, their friction surface and durability have increased. This was necessary as the engine power and torque increased. The reverse drive sprocket now has 17 teeth, instead of eighteen. The motorcycle can be used with a sidecar.

Front fork from a CZ 472 motorcycle, tube diameter 36 mm, stroke 175 mm, more reliable sealing of the rods. The new fork dampens vibrations better and has greater rigidity. The motorcycle also features an elastic fuel tank mount and a new carburetor.

Engine Java 634-01

Power increased from 18 (for the “360-00” model) to 22 hp. With. without increasing the maximum speed. This is very important for a road motorcycle used in a wide variety of conditions, including quite difficult ones. The engine's ability to provide sufficient traction at low and medium speeds allows you to change gears less often if driving conditions deteriorate. It is this “character” feature that distinguishes a road engine from a racing engine and ensures ease of use.

Engine : 1 - crankcase; 2 - crankshaft; 3 — generator: 4 — double-row ball bearing of the secondary shaft of the gearbox; 5 — clutch release mechanism; 6 — secondary drive sprocket; 7 — chain drive casing; 8 — right crankcase cover; 9 — grease nipple for lubrication of the middle bearing of the crankshaft; 10 — primary drive sprocket; 11 — double-row primary transmission chain; 12 — clutch; 13— gearbox input shaft; 14— left crankcase cover.

The new engine, with careful adjustment, allows you to use A-76 gasoline, which is available at almost all gas stations. In cases where the driver places particularly high demands on the engine, for example during competitions, when driving with a heavy load, the best results will be achieved by using gasoline with a higher octane number (AI-93 or a mixture with it).

When designing the engine, an optimal decision was made, which included, on the one hand, borrowing the best components from previous models, and on the other, ensuring fairly favorable characteristics and increasing reliability. Therefore, the design of the new engine has much in common with its predecessors. At the same time, due to the increased power and modified frame, the new engine has significant differences. External: increased fins of cylinders and their heads, improving cooling; new “architecture” of the crankcase; more rigid, spatial fastening of the rear part. Internal, related to increasing engine reliability: needle bearings in both the lower and upper heads of the connecting rods, the diameter of the piston pins increased to 16 mm, syringe lubrication of the middle support bearing of the crank, a double-row chain for transmitting torque to the clutch. The friction linings of the clutch discs are now made of non-flammable material and are more durable.

In order to increase durability, the design of the gearbox has been significantly changed. The main thing here can be considered the use of segmental cams at the ends of the gears of the second and third gears. The teeth have become stronger. The secondary shaft (gear with hub) is now supported by a double-row ball bearing.

Motorcycle in the USSR

The USSR was the main importer of Java. Between 1963 and 1983 alone, 1.5 million motorcycles of various models were delivered to the Soviet Union.

The constant problem with purchasing spare parts was solved to some extent with the help of orders through Posyltorg.

The last Java model supplied to the USSR in the late 1980s and early 1990s was the Java 350-638. The first Java 638 appeared in 1984 and bore the index 5. It was similar to the model 634-7. The differences were a new engine, 12-volt electrics, and a new front fork. The front wing was painted red, and the rear wing was painted black. The 634th model had wings painted light gray. Also on the instrument cluster, the neutral light is green. The tachometer received a green scale (Economic).

In 1986, Java 350-638-00 appeared, for the characteristic shape of the rear part it was also called “Pencil”. It was also called “Banana” or “Squirrel” because of the rear spoiler. In 1989, Java 350-638 appeared with the index 1-03, which received the popular name “Lux”, “Super” and “Stub”. It was distinguished by longer exhaust pipes and, accordingly, a larger bending radius, which led to the effect of raised mufflers. The mufflers themselves became shorter in length (like the model 634) and received dents on the inside in the area where the shock absorbers were installed, and the upper mount of the rear shock absorbers on the frame changed. Also, stickers took the place of the metal nameplates located on the gas tank and side covers. In the same year, model 638-1-04 (Twin Sport) appeared, with different decals and Cezet shock absorbers.

From 1971 until the end of the 1980s, “ Friends of Java Meetings”

" They took place in various cities of the country, the first rally took place in Odessa, then there were Chisinau, Riga, Moscow, Baku, Tbilisi, Kharkov, Poltava and others. Owners of Java motorcycles from all over the country came to the rallies. Some rallies took place directly in Czechoslovakia, with the participation of Soviet motorcycle enthusiasts. Competitions were always held as part of the rallies. One of them gave impetus to the start of the USSR motorcycle trials championships.

What fuel and oil is preferable?

The Java engine has a high compression ratio. This requires the use of gasoline with an octane rating of 70-74. If the motorcycle is refueled with gasoline with a lower octane number, for example 66, then the compression ratio must be reduced accordingly by installing gaskets with a diameter of 70X60 mm and a height of 1.5 mm made of annealed red copper or AMTsa-P alloy under the cylinder heads. At the same time, engine power will decrease slightly and fuel consumption will increase.

For engine lubrication we can recommend: in summer - oils AKZp-10, AKp-10, AS-9.5, ASp-10, ASp-9.5; in winter - AKZp-10, ASp-5, ASp-6.

It is undesirable to use thick MK and MS oils, as they do not mix well with gasoline; It is advisable to use SU only at low ambient temperatures.

To ensure that oil is always at hand, it is good to have a tank with a capacity of 400 - 500 cm3. It can be placed in the left drawer by moving the battery forward slightly. It is advisable to place a fuel dipstick nearby, in the holders. To prepare the fuel mixture you need a measuring cup. It is convenient to place it under the fuel tank cap, in a recessed mesh.

For gearboxes in the hot season, the best oils are MK-20, MS-20, AK-15, and in winter - AKZp-10 and similar viscosities.

The wheel and steering column bearings must be filled with 1-1ЗС (synthetic) lubricant or, in extreme cases, grease. Grease 1-13 (fatty) is unsuitable for this purpose, since it dries quickly and loses its properties.

The performance of the suspension largely depends on the composition of the shock-absorbing fluid. Spindle, transformer and turbine oils can only be used in winter; in summer, it is recommended to pour a mixture of 140 cm3 SU oil (or 150 cm3 MK-8 oil) and 10 cm3 kerosene into each front fork leg. The same mixture is suitable for the rear shock absorbers.

To eliminate the creaking that sometimes appears in the front fork from the friction of dry suspension springs on the protective casings, you should generously lubricate the springs, casing and guide stays with grease, having first washed them in kerosene and wiped them dry. For this operation you will have to remove the fork stays from the traverses. This work is quite troublesome and requires great care. But if the feathers are already removed, do not miss the opportunity to make sure that the shaped nuts of the tips are tightly tightened: loosening them leads to a leak of shock-absorbing fluid.

Story

The first Java model, produced under license from Wanderer from 1929, had a four-stroke engine with a cylinder capacity of 500 cm3, was quite complex, expensive and was not in demand. Success for the brand came with the development in 1931 of a light motorcycle with a two-stroke engine with a cylinder capacity of 175 cm3. In 1934, the four-stroke Java with an engine capacity of 350 cm3 was mastered, then a two-stroke with an engine capacity of 250 cm3. In 1937, production of the Java-Robot motorbike began.

After the occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1938, the plant came under the control of the German authorities and began producing military equipment. However, the development of new motorcycle models on it continued. By the end of 1944, the company had prepared for production new models of motorcycles with two-stroke engines of 250 and 350 cm3 and a spark plug rear suspension designed by DKW.

After the liberation of Czechoslovakia, the plant was nationalized and resumed motorcycle production in May 1945. In 1946, the new Java 250 model created a sensation at an exhibition in Paris, winning a gold medal. For its smooth ride, the motorcycle received the nickname “Perak” (springy).

In 1953, production of a new family of Java motorcycles with two-stroke engines of 250 and 350 cm3 and a pendulum rear suspension was launched. The motorcycles were produced jointly with another Czech company, CZ.

In 1970, production began of a new series of Java 250-623 and 350-633 motorcycles, distinguished by their original design. The motorcycles had a backbone frame and an engine with a separate lubrication system. In 1973, the Java 350-634 model with a duplex closed frame and a new engine went into production. The production of motorcycles with an engine capacity of 250 cm3 ceased. After modernization in 1984, the model received the index 638 and continues to be produced with minor changes. The total number of Java motorcycles produced in the 80s exceeded 3 million units.

The Java-India joint venture under the Ezdi brand has produced the Java-250 model since 1960, and the Java-350 model since 1983.

During the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, up to 99% of production was exported, mainly to socialist countries, and the leading importer was the USSR. After the collapse of the CMEA, the production of Java motorcycles decreased sharply, but the company managed to stay afloat and maintain the production of motorcycles of the original design. The range of models has expanded to include motorcycles with more powerful Rotax and Honda engines.

In November 2022, a presentation of completely new Jawa motorcycles took place in Mumbai (India). As part of the presentation, three new motorcycles equipped with an anti-lock braking system ABS were presented - the classic Jawa, Jawa “Forty-Two” and a custom bike based on Java called “Perak”. If the first two of the listed models became available for pre-order from the day of the presentation, then the custom bike will be sold a little later.

Technical and operational characteristics

At one time, Java simply blew up the motorcycle market, but even now this motorcycle remains relevant despite its respectful age. The Java 350, whose performance characteristics are quite modest today, still remains a relevant motorcycle.

A large headlight looks quite harmonious in combination with round turn signals

Power

The Java 350, whose engine power is 23 horsepower at 5250 rpm, is unlikely to surprise a modern motorcyclist who loves high-speed driving with such modest parameters. However, even at this, the bike is capable of reaching speeds of up to 128 km/h. How many horses there are in Java 350 also depends on the modification. For example, export models were produced only with 19 hp engines.

Dynamics

Thanks to the fact that the cylinders are now made of aluminum, the weight of the bike has decreased. The motorcycle accelerates to hundreds in about 13 seconds, but the weight of the rider is also of great importance here.

Engine capacity

Java, whose engine capacity is only 343.37 cc. cm, it is still considered a fairly power-hungry bike.

A naked bike is a bike according to the modern classification.

Electrical equipment

On Java 350 634 there is a 6-pole generator with a power of 75 W, which is located in the engine crankcase. This model is also equipped with a battery ignition system. The instrument panel is simple and has only 4 indicator lights. When the generator is running, the red light is on, when turning it is green, at neutral speed it is yellow, and the blue indicator is on if you turn on the high beams.

The cost of maintaining a motorcycle depends on the operating conditions.

Fuel consumption

For the Java 350, fuel consumption at a speed of 80 km/h of 4.5 liters is considered the norm. The fuel tank capacity is 17+3 liters.

Minuses

They traveled on it on long journeys throughout the Soviet Union, carefully wiped it with a cloth after the trip, and sometimes even passed it on to inheritance with the words Keep it, as I kept it. When the generator is running, the red light goes out, when the turn is turned on, the green light flashes, when the motorcycle is set to neutral speed, the yellow light comes on, and when the high beam is on, the blue light comes on.
