In 1970, the IZH Planet 3 model appeared in the production program of the Izhevsk Motor Plant.

Unlike its predecessor with the index “2,” the motorcycle received a new shaped gas tank, a more powerful engine and direction indicators.

Motorcycle Features

The electrical wiring of IZH Planet 3 was designed for 6 volts. It served as the basis for other motorcycle models produced later (see also wiring diagram for IZH Planet 5).

Among the features are:

  1. Generator G36M7, which was later modified;
  2. Voltage regulator relay RR-1;
  3. Ignition coil IZH 56;
  4. Turn signal relay PC419.

For reference: The installation of markers and turn signals was used for the first time on domestic motorcycles. In general, for its progressive design and high quality, the IZH Planet 3 model received the state quality mark, which can be seen in the video of previous years.

Appearance

Despite the fact that IZH Planeta-5 is one of the best examples of domestic production in terms of design, it still differs unfavorably from foreign motorcycles. To change the appearance of the Planet for the better, you can take the following actions:

  1. Install double-sided bars - in case of a fall, they will protect the driver and protect the motorcycle from serious damage.
  2. Install xenon. This will not only help in illuminating the track, but will make the motorcycle more visible and, as a result, increase the safety of the driver.
  3. Not all modifications of IZH Planet-5 have knee pads. In order to close the holes that form the safety arches, two shields should be cut out of light tin or durable plastic. This change will reduce dirt on the engine and rider and improve the appearance of the motorcycle.
  4. Replace factory turn signals. In its original configuration, IZH Planet-5 has rather inconspicuous round turn signals; they can be replaced with more modern rectangular ones.
  5. Replace the windshield. Thanks to this, the motorcycle will literally be transformed.
  6. Raising the rear of the motorcycle and the front fender slightly will give the Planet a more sporty look.
  7. Change tires to more modern ones.

All of the above will radically change the appearance of the Planet. Only you can decide what your bike will look like. When tuning an IZH 5 motorcycle, you can choose which parts of the original design you want to replace and which ones you want to leave.

Converting the electrical circuit to work without a battery

Unlike cars that have a closed engine and electrical wiring, parts of the IZH Planet 3 motorcycle are more susceptible to external factors than others:

  1. Rain and snow;
  2. Direct sunlight;
  3. Mechanical damage from bushes.

The owners are especially troubled by the standard battery, which is also quite difficult to maintain (see also the Ural motorcycle wiring diagram).

The factory instructions provide:

  1. The need to constantly check the electrolyte level in banks, because when the motorcycle tilts, it inevitably leaks out;
  2. The need to constantly check the electrolyte density. This forces motorcycle owners to have a hydrometer, distilled water and hydrochloric acid on hand to restore the required density with their own hands.

  • Oleg, Tver region. I decided to share my feelings about this miracle of technology. A strong, impressive motorcycle with low fuel consumption. This machine is easy to service. In order not to look for consumables and parts, I purchased another motorcycle of the same type as a donor, so I currently have all the parts in stock. It’s probably not advisable to constantly mess with the power unit - it’s quite solid. It is possible to conclude that IZH Planet 3 is exemplary for rural paths, because its chassis is perfectly adapted for driving over potholes, gullies, stones and potholes. It’s quite difficult for a motorcycle to cope in the cold, so I ride mainly when there is no snow - there is a possibility even in winter. In cold weather, the power unit starts up confidently, but not always. There are unpredictable surprises with him that you have to put up with. The maximum speed is about 100 km/h, which is enough for me. Moreover, I ride mainly on off-road roads, and on such roads you rarely even accelerate to 80. I was glad that numerous details were unified with other “Planets”. In particular, I dismantled the original rusted gas tank and installed a tank from Planet-2 (a “Droplet” type tank). I also installed glove compartments from Planet 5. And finally, I borrowed the panel from Planet 4, it looks much more solid than the “egg” from Planet 3. The cylinder is installed from the fifth generation model. The muffler and gearbox were also eventually installed from Planet-5. The tires also had to be changed, since the motorcycle was quite old and needed a major overhaul. Fuel consumption per 100 km for Planet-3 is 3-4 liters per hundred square meters. The motorcycle is worth the money spent.
  • Vladislav, Volgograd. I am the owner of an IZH Planet-3 motorcycle manufactured in 1980, I am the second owner. Model owned for 13 months. Among the advantages, I will briefly highlight the thoroughness, simplicity and ability to repair the motorcycle. It steers clearly, brakes well and rides comfortably over bumps and on rough country roads. Undoubtedly, this is the optimal example of the Planet motorcycle family. In addition, this is the most common model compared to other ILs. It is so easy to repair that even the power unit of Planet 3 can be repaired by an inexperienced mechanic or an untrained driver. It is possible to repair a motorcycle in the field, provided (of course) you have a special tool that can be stored in the sidecar. However, if the motorcycle is not often used off-road, then in general there will be no difficulties with repairs - however, because there will be no malfunctions at all! The power unit is not boosted, without a turbine and other unnecessary bells and whistles, because of which it reduces its service life and is of no benefit. The kinetics are normal, for my needs the engine power is sufficient with a reserve. Clear instructions for active use will help you understand the engine. You can count the engine systems on your fingers – ignition, fuel system (carburetor). They can be easily adjusted, just like the clutch. The motorcycle has a generous traction reserve at low speeds - this is a kind of compensation for periodic technical service. At low speeds, the power unit functions pleasantly - in the sense that, unlike current engines, at the bottom it does not have sharp and excessive maximum power. The gas supply is balanced, without jumps and sudden starts. When moving around the city, it comes out to squeeze in 4-6 liters per hundred square meters, on the road it’s about 6 liters.
  • Anatoly, Kazan. I have a motorcycle IZH Planeta-3 manufactured in 1990, I have only used it for three years. However, this was enough to appreciate this miracle of technology. I came to the conclusion to remember my childhood and bought a used Planet, I always dreamed about it - as a child (in the Soviet years) I rode a motorcycle with friends, but at the same time I always wanted to have my own transport, but I didn’t have any money. Currently I have a car, but at the same time I didn’t mind remembering my childhood, and I had the opportunity to purchase this horse. I bought it for 1500 rubles. The motorcycle was not running. Fortunately, all the consumables and parts were in place; there was no need to search for anything. The motik is red. I brought it home in my own VAZ-2106 car, this is my workhorse. Since all the parts were in place, we only had to buy the battery, pistons, wires and clean the power unit. I started the engine and my heart immediately filled with impressions that did not disappear for a long time, so to speak. I even forgot for a moment that I had a full-fledged car - this is how I fell back into childhood, driving Planet-3 I felt small again, but not for long, of course. The speed is about 90 km/h, it doesn’t take more. The gearbox is a four-speed manual, it functions well, and the shifts are quite clear. Fuel consumption is around 3-4 liters. For comparison, this is two times less than the good old Urals. The motorbike is suitable for household needs and for small off-road cargo transportation. The stroller has the ability to transport firewood, hay and other luggage. This increases the consumption slightly. I fill up with 92-grade gasoline, no problems. I have my own garage, just enough for my six and the Planet.
  • Vitaly, Tuapse. I ride on Planet-3, manufactured in 1970. The 19-liter-horsepower power unit functions excellently; at low speeds it likes low, medium, and high speeds. At speeds of 80-90, the traction already disappears, but the adrenaline still goes through the roof. In terms of budget and reliability, Planet-3 is the best among Soviet motorcycles of that time. It’s clear that it needs to be repaired periodically, because you shouldn’t expect miracles from old equipment. On this model, the ignition often malfunctions and needs to be adjusted. The single-cylinder engine is gifted with remarkable traction, which helps in off-road situations. The seating position is comfortable, the seat does not press. There is room for two to sit. I was pleased with the high mobility due to the short wheelbase, which is not surprising - after all, this is a motorcycle of the middle class, but it is regarded as a lightweight two-wheeler, it is like a moped. The meager 6-watt generator is interpreted as a serious drawback. This chassis and engine could use a 13 W generator. Unfortunately, it is available exclusively in the 4th model, which I did not find in good condition. Izh Planet-3 consumes 3-4 liters in urban conditions, on the highway it manages to fit in 3 liters, no more. Full support for both 76, 80 and 92 gasoline. And pouring 95 into the Planet for the sake of increasing kinetics is, in general, suicide, I don’t see the point in it. The appearance is normal, but the four are certainly prettier.
  • Arkady, Lvov. I’ll tell you about my Planet-3, which I inherited from my grandfather. In general, I am an expert on Soviet motorcycles, I have adequately read about each model. I did not ignore Planet-3 - in fact, this is a deep modernization of the IZH-56 and IZH-Planet2 models. The main differences can be seen in kinetics, economy and appearance. Maximum power increased to 19 liter horsepower. Convenience is also more optimal - at least, vibrations at idle and high speeds have disappeared. The gearbox functions more efficiently thanks to changed gear ratios; due to this, the two-wheeler has a higher maximum speed. I will also note the changes in the side trailer, which has acquired a square shape. Thanks to this, the trailer has become more spacious. His appearance also changed. Perhaps, Planet-3 borrowed exclusively advantages from its predecessors, and at the same time added additional optimizations. As long as I've been driving it, it hasn't let me down at all on long journeys, off-road or anywhere else. Fuel consumption is 6 liters maximum. It is comfortable to sit down and sit comfortably, more comfortable than in the previous generation. During the times of the USSR, these motorcycles were like gold; they are probably kept to this day by grandfathers, who from time to time also want to ride, remember their childhood, so to speak. The most important disadvantage of Planet-3 is the high toxicity of the exhaust gases, which do not even fulfill basic Euro standards. Of course, all this is nitpicking, because what kind of ecology could we talk about in the 50s if they built this motorcycle? The power unit is absolutely trouble-free, but very noisy, and a lot of black and smelly smoke is consumed from the exhaust pipe. In addition, Planet-3 is a frankly meager 6-watt generator, the maximum power of which is not enough even for basic things - in particular, to illuminate the road. The battery also discharges dynamically with frequent driving. There are many other shortcomings, but the Planet-3 motorcycle is worth the money spent, no matter what condition it is in. If you have direct hands, this device will serve its next owner faithfully.
  • Garik, Kemerovo. This motorcycle belongs to my godfather, he occasionally lets me ride. In general, I often come across this motorcycle, because my friends from the village still have it. This old lady apparently doesn't care about age. How Planet-3 functions to this day, I have absolutely no idea (I’m talking about the godfather’s motorcycle). The godfather purchased this tachila from a semi-assembled state. It took about three weeks to assemble, no more. For the first time, the power unit was launched successfully, without driving round dances. Indeed, problems already arose during the trip - the gearbox was knocked out of second gear, and in the end the gearbox worked with a stretch - gears were shifted lazily. My well-read godfather couldn’t leave it all like that, and came to the conclusion of rebuilding the entire transmission. Indeed, for this I had to re-read a bunch of reviews, literature and writings on the Internet - and this in order to find more or less adequate instructions for car disassembly. As a result, the godfather managed to fix the problems, and the gearbox worked as expected. At the same time, thanks to lubrication and overhaul of the gearbox, the degree of acceleration has noticeably improved, and gears began to engage more clearly. We have been riding a motorcycle for more than five years, during which time we have not had a single major repair, with the exception of an incident with the gearbox. The exterior, of course, leaves much to be desired. All the paint on the motorcycle has peeled off, but the godfather laughs it off and says that this does not affect the thoroughness. The main thing is that the body is intact, there is no rust, and not a drop leaks anywhere. However, the stroller still had to be changed - it was completely rotten and rusty. After much rework, the godfather came to the conclusion to abandon this idea. Instead of a stroller, an iron frame was welded and installed in place of the stroller. This frame is great for transporting goods. The motorcycle consumes 4-6 liters per hundred kilometers. The kinetics are normal, as is the feedback on the steering wheel.

Stages of electrical equipment modification

The entire procedure for switching to a battery-free circuit comes down to:

  1. Replacement of components for 12 volt equipment;
  2. Remaking the generator, and sometimes borrowing it from another model;
  3. Replacing lamps from 6V to 12V.

For reference: the wiring diagram on IZH Planet 3 does not change significantly - only the circuits of the generator, coil and voltage regulator relay are replaced.

Generator

  1. Two 6 mm holes are drilled to allow the ring to be secured on the right half of the crankcase;
  2. To attach the generator to the ring, three M5s are drilled;
  3. A segment is cut out of the ring to facilitate installation under the partition of the right half of the crankcase;
  4. Cutouts for the crankcase cover bosses are made on the right and bottom.

Advice: motorcyclists who have done this modification note the undoubted advantages of switching to contactless ignition. The wiring of IZH Planet 3 remains almost unchanged, but there is a complete refusal to use the battery. And the cost of reconstruction is small.

Conclusions: the proposed conversion method has been tested on thousands of motorcycles of domestic owners (see also the IZ Jupiter 5 wiring diagram). And it has proven its worth with trouble-free operation, improved spark generation and reliable engine starting in harsh winter conditions.

4 years after the appearance of the second Planet (1966), the factory workers made a number of changes to its design, designed to improve the technical parameters and appearance of the motorcycle. Again, if we consider foreign motorcycles, then the manufacturer prepares in advance the entire separate process of further tuning, when the domestic Izh can only be modernized by the caring hands of their owners, i.e. basically any person. and – visual changes in appearance and increased driving parameters. As a rule, most Planet 5 owners are interested exclusively in styling - external changes and tuning of the motorcycle. In this case, you will have to pay attention to the muffler, which takes up the vast majority of space, and, therefore, must be unique and one of a kind. You will have to count on several hours of time searching the Internet for prototypes or ideas for upgrading the standard one. Or you can simply visit familiar craftsmen, get rid of the standard “cans” and begin installation. This cannot be called a simple task, but the result will clearly please you: tuning the motorcycle will become noticeably better, the model itself is lighter, and the operation is much more stable. At the same time, the exhaust system will also improve along the chain, which will forget about “choking” if the engine overheats while driving off-road.

The improvement in ride should be associated with the installation of longer shock-absorbing systems that can lift the rear of the Izh. These manipulations will reduce the pressure on the tank and the engine itself. In this case, you will have to take care of balancing the wheels of your two-wheeled friend in advance.

Good day! So I decided to write my first post. It will be about how I turned IZH Planet into Dirt Tracker. I work as an argon welder. Before that, he worked for 10 years as a straightening welder at a service station. At work, I often have to help people with their motorcycles - either the frame will burst, or the rim will shatter into pieces... After reading the Bike Post, I decided to get myself a motorcycle. But we are not looking for easy ways, and stock motorcycles were immediately rejected. Before starting to work on the motorcycle, the following requirements were set: it should be inexpensive, easy availability of spare parts on the market, convenient for driving around the city - to and from work, a high-torque engine (I weigh a lot) Therefore, the choice fell on IZh Planet. It was purchased via the Internet in one of the villages of the Sumy region for reasonable money, that is, a little more expensive than for nothing. After delivering it to my native Kharkov, I started work. I immediately decided to make a Dirt Tracker out of it - I really like this style.

Kick-starter from IZH K-16 Headlight I don’t know why - it was treated to by friends, but it is confidently written on it that it was made in the GDR. The headlight and turn signal mounts are homemade.

Improved brakes a la Bonneville

In addition to its decent appearance, Izh Planet 5 has excellent technical characteristics. The motorcycle is equipped with a single-cylinder two-stroke engine with a power of 22 hp. With. The fuel consumption and processing system requires a modest 5 liters. gasoline with stable driving at a speed of 90 km/h. In addition, this model of domestic motorcycle was one of the first to receive an air cooling system, which increases traction at low speeds.

The maximum speed of the motorcycle is 120 km/h. The unit performs well when driving off-road and does not require large expenses for maintenance. All this is the reason for the wild popularity of Izh Planet 5 from 1987 to the present day. After all, not every one of us can buy an expensive Harley Davidson. But many people are capable of paying 5–6 thousand rubles for a domestic motorcycle. In addition, the Izhevsk Machine Plant model is much easier to tune with your own hands, which cannot be said about the expensive American and Japanese “monsters”.

Differences from the second Planet

For many modern citizens, the information that domestic motorcycle manufacturers worked tirelessly to improve their models in an era of total shortages may come as a surprise.

Modifications

But the creator engineers did not stop there and, having released the five-millionth car from the production line, presented a modification of the IZH Planet 3-01. Mirror and safety arches are the distinctive features of the new modification

  1. Rear passenger footrests;
  2. Roll bars;
  3. Rearview mirror;
  4. New steering wheel design.

For reference: The buyer paid for the changes out of his own pocket. In particular, the price for IZH Planet 3-01 was 750 rubles, the version with a stroller was 1140, and the “rural version” was even more expensive. Fortunately, care instructions were included with purchase, which made maintenance easier.

Review of IZH P-3 (1977)

I read the reviews about IZH Planet, couldn’t resist, and decided to write it too.

IZh Planeta-3. Released in 1977. My father drove it, and later I got to ride it too.

I sold it in 2006 for 6,000 rubles, when a new one cost about 40,000 rubles.:) (and Java - 76,000 rubles), which I think is not bad at all (in relation to Izh. So at 2006 prices, as you can see, Izh remained Izh, and Java remained Java, the table of ranks did not change.

The motorcycle occupied a place in terms of “prestige” between the “Voskhod” and the Czechoslovak CZ and Java. In my opinion, it differed from Voskhod only in mass and size. A typical Soviet product rated “so-so.” And he was as far from CZ and Java (in terms of engine, acceleration and speed) as from a distant star...

Appearance. Gray-white color. Huge wings. Streamlined tank. Shiny exhaust pipes. Chromed wheel rims. The motorcycle looked stylish. A little later, my father bought a stroller. For that time, the motorcycle looked decent, even despite the attached stroller basin on the side (and it was also turquoise).

This is where I'll end the nostalgia.

We rarely drove it. Over the entire period, the mileage was 38,000 km.

The engine is unpretentious to what was poured into it. And I poured into it everything that caught my eye, I mean gasoline oils. Sometimes there was a trail behind the motorcycle - a prominence, like from a jet plane. And HE (Izh) forgave it. Holes were drilled in the bottom of the exhaust pipes through which unburned oil flowed. Gasoline consumption with the sidecar was 7-8 liters, and when driving on the highway, without racing, 60 km/h.

At first I unfastened the cradle and changed the stars. Everything took an hour and a half.

I tried the speed limit, but it didn’t work out more than 120 (according to the speedometer). “...It didn’t work...” - in the singular, because I tried it only once. And it was enough not to drive anymore. After the race, our palms were wet with fear. It feels like you're flying on an uncontrollable projectile. Control of the motorcycle was maintained up to 80 km/h, then there was no need to talk about any controlled avoidance of obstacles on the road. The motorcycle was driving you... It just flew forward in a straight line... I remember that according to the passport its weight was 150 kg. Then it became interesting, what if the motorcycle falls on the rider. So I did. On the sand he knocked it over onto his side. After that, for my 18-year-old, home-grown racer’s brain, full of ambitions, it became clear that after the first fall I would have 2 options: either in a box (wooden pea coat:), or alive, but with a cut off leg, possibly paralyzed in a wheelchair. After this test I never unfastened the cradle again and rode very carefully.

The engine is torquey from low speeds. But it doesn’t like overheating (long driving with a full load), and if this happens, it won’t start until it cools down. The clutch and gas cables were constantly breaking. I did everything I could: I tucked it in without breaking it and lubricated it, nothing helped.

One day the generator burned out. The reason is simple: instead of a fuse, I inserted a nail. Tough... I won’t bore your attention with the reasons (including the shortage and high cost of batteries at that time), my father decided to convert our motorcycle to use Voskhod ignition. An adapter was made for the generator, the wiring was completely changed, and contactless 12-volt ignition was installed. When they write “...the motorcycle sat for three months and started up...” - I assure you, this is not the limit. After collecting dust in the garage for a year and a half, it started up with two kicks of the handle! Engine operation has become more stable. I’m not even writing about the factory. But! The Voskhod engine has a higher speed than the Izh-P-Z, if I remember 5200 versus 4200 rpm, so the voltage in the network was not 12, but 9 volts. While the motorcycle was moving at speed, the revs somehow reached Voskhodovskie and the headlight was on satisfactorily, but as soon as a stop occurred, the revs dropped and the light dimmed greatly, one might even say that it went out.

I was lucky not to have to repair the engine. The compression was excellent. I only changed the spark plugs.
