Two-wheeled motorcycle IZH Planet 5 engine, which developed only 22 hp. pp., throughout almost the entire period of its production, and from 1987 to 2008 it was considered one of the most common middle-class motorcycles among domestic buyers.
This motorcycle was developed and manufactured at the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant (Izhmash), which is located in the capital of the Republic of Udmurtia. The main advantages that ensured the popularity of Izhevsk motorcycles, and not only in Russia, should be considered:
- Ease of use.
- Simplicity of design and maintenance.
- High overall reliability.
- Economical, repairable motors.
- Affordable prices.
In addition, Izhmash constantly sought to make changes and improvements in the design of its products, including the Izh Planet 5 motorcycle model and the Izh Planet 5 engine. At the plant itself, production was regularly modernized in order to improve quality. Thus, the assembly of power units, including the assembly of the IZH Planet 5 engine, was carried out at a specialized technological site.
The publication
Back in 1971, the first motorcycle “IZH Planet-3” rolled off the Izhevsk assembly line. Initially, it was designed as a budget version for the middle class and was, in fact, a stripped-down version of IZH Jupiter-3. The new product has gained great popularity among the population. This is confirmed by the fact that between 1971 and 1977 more than 450 thousand copies of the basic version of the motorcycle were produced. And this is not surprising, because despite its relative cheapness, it was unpretentious and “omnivorous,” as well as sufficient endurance and many compatible parts, which greatly simplified repairs. It was also the first motorcycle to have standard turn signals.
Characteristics of the base model
As for the technical characteristics of IZH Planet-3, they were very close to those of its “elder brother”. The clutch and gearbox were structurally similar to each other. But, despite all the similarities, the parts were not interchangeable. The IZH Planet-3 engine was single-cylinder, and its volume was 346 cm3, which is only 1 cm3 less than the previous model. But at the same time its power was 25 hp. s., versus 18 hp. With. prototype. Both engines were two-stroke. The power unit had a return-loop purge system. But due to the imbalance of the parts, the engine created very strong vibration. There was another innovation that began to be used on this model. In order to simplify the repair and maintenance of equipment, the designers provided for the installation of a collapsible crankshaft. This made it possible to repair the motorcycle gearbox without dismantling the unit itself.
Motorcycle engine characteristics
- Number of engine cylinders - 1.
- The diameter and height of the cylinder are 72*85 mm.
- The piston stroke is 85 mm.
- Engine capacity - 346 cm3.
- Compression ratio - 7.51.
- Engine power - 18 liters. With.
- Cooling type: air.
- Carburetor type - K-36I, K-62I.
But people fell in love with the motorcycle not only for the ease of repair and maintenance. Perhaps the main advantage of this unit was not its speed characteristics (the maximum speed that a motorcycle could reach was 110 km/h), but its cross-country ability. Of course, the characteristics of the IZH Planet-3 were inferior to many motorcycles, this also applied to acceleration dynamics, but this was compensated by increased endurance. It was she who made the model a “people's brand” among residents of villages, villages, towns, in a word, places where there were bad roads. This motorcycle was the golden mean: it was taken both for a fun ride, and for going fishing, hunting, and also to bring some kind of cargo. With a curb weight of 168 kg, the recommended load weight was 170 kg, and this, they say, was not the limit.
The simplicity of the engine design, its unpretentiousness, durability, and well-designed cooling were most suitable for low-speed travel in difficult terrain. The motorcycle engine developed the highest torque in first gear, and this happened already at a speed of about 25 km/h. This made it possible to pass in places where other motorcycles skidded or stalled.

The glorious Izhey family...
There are enough people who like to criticize the IZH-Yu-5 and IZH-P-5 motorcycles, but nevertheless we can say that these motorcycles can no longer be called toys, these are real motorcycles with their own advantages and, of course, disadvantages. These motorcycles are either for people with low incomes who cannot or do not want to buy expensive Japanese or European motorcycle toys, or for people who are in love with motorcycles. Buyers of such motorcycles do not need to show off their bike at the pub.
Nevertheless, these models of the domestic motorcycle industry are capable of delivering enough pleasure and thrill to the owner. And if the owner is not offended by skillful hands, then these motorcycles turn into quite attractive material for the birth of motorcycle creations.
A strong frame, especially for those models that from the factory were supposed to carry a heavy-duty side trailer - a stroller.
The factory design is completely free of plastic and in our road conditions this can be considered a plus. Comfortable, road fit, no need to lie on the tank. According to those characteristics, the stated speeds are: with a maximum load on the highway 90 km/h Of course, nothing is impossible and a single motorcycle can be accelerated even more, but will the driver enjoy such speed? Still, the suspension, brakes and engine were developed quite a long time ago, and in this case the possibility of competing with modern motorcycles is doubtful.
When buying an IZH-Yu-5 motorcycle or an IZH-P-5 motorcycle, you know for sure that you can find almost any spare part anywhere. There are no problems with spare parts. Don’t forget about the possibility of repairs in the field - almost any breakdown can be fixed on the road if you have a little experience. These motorcycles are not too demanding on the quality of gasoline, although naturally the motorcycle runs a little faster at 92.
Motorcycles IZH-Yu-5 and IZH-P-5, despite their weight, can still be classified as heavy motorcycles, because the curb weight with driver and passenger is more than three hundred kg. Of course, you can’t count on dynamics with such a load, nor can you count on a quick ability to stop; the braking torque will clearly not be enough for such a mass.
Let’s not try to separate IZH-Yu-5 or IZH-P-5; this is a matter of taste and every Izh owner will find a lot of positive aspects when choosing the number of cylinders for the engine.
Here it is worth noting only the average statistical data, which turns out that the owner of an IZH-Yu-5 spends an order of magnitude more money and time on repairs and maintenance than the owner of an IZH-P-5 motorcycle. Naturally, the reason for this lies in the engine.
Let's try to confirm or deny this:
In theory, everything is fine - two cylinders are considered somewhat better than one, here the vibration is an order of magnitude less, and the dynamics along with the power are better. But the majority is of the opinion that the better the easier, this applies not only to motorcycles. It is believed that simplicity is the key to reliability, because a two-cylinder engine has twice as many parts. Oddly enough, it turns out that the Planets last twice as long, they are not so sensitive to various gaps, and to wear of the cylinder-piston group.
Almost all repair work is carried out on the Planet faster and easier. Here it is worth recalling at least the gearbox, which can be reached without completely disassembling the engine. The engines are almost identical in power. One way or another, each driver decides for himself whether to choose IZH-Yu-5 or IZH-P-5. Both motorcycles are worthy, as at the time of their appearance and even now, there are still a lot of fans of these motorcycles.

Model "IZH Planeta-3-01"
Starting in 1977, a new modification of our hero was launched into the series. The following improvements have been made:
- Possibility to adjust the height of the front fender above the wheel.
- For the rear shock absorbers, it is now possible to change the spring preload. Three locking positions were provided. This allowed the rear suspension to have travel despite the load the bike was carrying. This innovation was especially important for motorcyclists who drove with a load on bad roads.
- The engine was boosted and its power increased by 2 liters. pp., which, in turn, led to a change in the shape of the cooling fins and their increase.
- The motorcycle's handlebars also underwent changes: in the new version, a rear-view mirror was standardly installed on it, and special rubber balls were added to the ends of the control handles, which prevented hand injuries when the motorcycle fell. Also, the change in the shape of the steering wheel was dictated by an increase in the level of comfort for the motorcyclist.
- Standard arches were installed, which were supposed to protect the driver in an accident.
Over four years, about 400 thousand motorcycles of this modification were produced.
Modifications of the Izh Planet 5 motorcycle
The produced modifications of Planet-5 may come with various improvements and expansions of the configuration compared to the original 1987 model:
- alloy wheels
- 2 mufflers
- oil pump (on Izh “Planet 5-01”)
- modernized starting system
- reinforced chain in the gearbox
- upgraded shock absorbers in wheel suspensions, equipped with rebound springs
- pneumatic adjustment of the front wheel suspension
- disc brake front
- upgraded rear wheel brake device
- presence of a half-fairing, knee pads, luggage holder
It is fair to conclude, summing up this review: Izh “Planet-5” remains a worthy city and intercity vehicle for those who value good traction and rough engine roar, who like to spend a lot of time with a screwdriver in their hand, as well as those who ready for the characteristic oil smell from your biker equipment.
Next entry Izh Jupiter - 5 one of the most popular motorcycles in its time
Model "IZH Planeta-3-02"
In 1981, with the light hand of Izhmash designers, a modernized motorcycle model rolled off the production lines. This time the innovations affected:
- carburetor: one horsepower was added;
- A new fuel tank was developed and installed on the motorcycle, which was subsequently transferred to the subsequent model of the IZH motorcycle, which was called “Planet-4”.
Over four years, more than 210 thousand motorcycles of this modification were produced.
Simplicity = reliability
Considering that these motorcycle models have not been produced since 1985, and you won’t see this iron horse on the roads, we can conclude: it turned out to be reliable and durable. As mentioned above, the engine was simple, the tubular frame was reliable, the front telescopic fork and rear spring shock absorber made it relatively comfortable to feel off-road. Minimalism also affected the instrument panel: there are only two lamps on it - neutral speed (green) and the one that signals the operation of the generator - red.
There is also a speedometer, which has a green backlight. Looking at the photo of IZH Planet-3, we can say that the designers of that time were also a little designers: the appearance of the motorcycle contains chrome parts, from modification to modification not only the appearance changes, but also the appearance of the stroller undergoes changes.
Thanks to its survivability and ability to ride off-road, IZH Planeta-3 is now popular among bikers who tune motorcycles. They repurpose them and turn them into choppers. This means that for a long time on our (and not only our) roads it will be possible to see this legend, created by conscientious workers of the Ural.
How many horsepower does the IZH Jupiter 5 have?
Since 1985, production of the Izh Jupiter-5 motorcycle began with an engine whose power, compared to the previous model Izh Jupiter-4, was reduced from s., but the torque increased to 3.5 kgf m (at lower speeds) .
