Motorcycle "Yamaha Diversion 600": technical characteristics and reviews

Let's go back a little to history. In the 50s of the last century, during the period of post-war technological development, the world famous company Yamaha finally resumed motorcycle production. The first Yamaha Diversion model was released back in 1984 and was significantly different from the modern version of the bike. The motorcycle produced a quite satisfactory 60 hp. With. During its existence, the model was improved three times, introducing more and more modern technologies and innovations for more convenient and safe operation of a motorbike. Since 1992, for a fairly long period (19 years), a slightly updated model “Yamaha Diversion-600” (1992) was produced, the photo of which is presented below. Despite the weak chassis and unimpressive engine, the Diversion model is still in high demand due to its reasonable price.

Flaws

We talked about a comfortable fit, but if you are taller than 190 centimeters or heavier than 90 kilos, then this is out of the question. Moreover, with such physical indicators, not only will it be uncomfortable for you to sit on a motorcycle, but it will even be difficult to see anything in the rearview mirror.

The low seating position of the motorcycle sometimes leads to the rear footrest touching the asphalt surface when cornering, and the brackets that hold the footpegs are weak and bend easily. But this is a feature of the model, you just need to get used to it by slightly adjusting your driving style. Not very good front light is also a drawback, but it can be eliminated by replacing the lamp and fine-tuning the optics.

Repair and tuning

The myth that all Japanese motorcycles are complex and therefore expensive to maintain is nothing more than a myth. Such a popular Diversion is an inexpensive motorcycle, despite its excellent technical characteristics, and there is nothing overly complicated about it. Of course, this is a consequence of the attempts of Japanese engineers to reduce the cost of its production, but what difference does it make if the result is still so good?

Repair

Since there are no auxiliary systems other than ABS in this model, its repair and maintenance are quite simple. Any problems, even the most serious ones, can be dealt with at any general motorcycle service center, so there is no point in spending money on expensive trips to official dealers. And most operations can be done yourself if you are the happy owner of a garage and tools.

Spare parts

There are no problems with them - the company continues to support discontinued models for many years, and in many respects the Diversiya is unified with its brothers in the model range. Spare parts cost about the same as for all other Japanese bikes of a similar price category, that is, more expensive than for small-capacity bikes, but cheaper than for flagship models.

Tuning

There are a lot of tuning options available, if only you had enough money! The manufacturer offers something, but the choice of non-original parts is much higher. The most popular are windshields of increased height, xenon light optics and, in some cases, replacing the suspension with a more powerful one. All this is not cheap, but it is completely worth it.

Old version

The Yamaha XJ6 motorcycle has been produced since 2009. The model was an update to the outdated Yamaha XJ 600 S Diversion (this motorcycle was produced from 1992 to 2003). It should be immediately noted that, despite the long production time of the old Yamaha XJ6 Diversion, it was unsuccessful and problematic. Almost every motorist knew about this feature.

The problems of the first generation Yamaha XJ6 lay in its weak eight-valve engine. Also, all motorcyclists criticized the cheap suspension, which could not withstand the loads and often broke. There were other problems, but they were not as systematic.

It is worth noting that the manufacturer took a risk when it released an updated version of the motorcycle, which did not perform well in all markets around the world. But the gamble was worth the candle, the new model pleased motorcyclists and established itself as an inexpensive and very reliable motorcycle.

Initially, 2 modifications of the XJ6 model were presented:

Yamaha XJ6N – naked version.

Yamaha XJ6S Diversion – version with front fairing.

Since 2010, a completely plastic modification of the Yamaha XJ6F Diversion has appeared, which is sold on the American market under the name Yamaha FZ6R.

The features of the XJ6 series motorcycles include a steel diagonal frame, an injection power system, the availability of versions with ABS, simple suspension in the form of a conventional telescopic fork at the front and a monoshock absorber at the rear, a 6-speed gearbox and a curb weight of 205 kg (the lightest weight is the XJ6N without ABS ).

2016 was the last year of production of the series for the European market, and in 2022 the model finally left the North American market.

Features of the model, or What else do we not know about the popular motorbike?

The new model was significantly redesigned, but the creators did not change the old front shock absorbers due to savings: this could greatly increase the already high price of this model. The thickness of the discs was reduced by 0.5 mm (they should play a role in reducing inertia during acceleration and braking). The rims have become lighter, and the use of a lighter 520 chain and a smaller rear axle diameter allows the unsprung and rotating masses of the motorbike to be reduced. Accordingly, greater realization of the motor’s capabilities became possible: to improve its elasticity, it had to be redesigned. The combination of intake and exhaust devices has changed.

As a result, the thrust increased significantly by 4,000-5,000 rpm in the main engine operating mode, as a result of which it became possible to change gears more rarely, which greatly simplifies the process of driving the bike. In order to reduce costs, the aluminum frame was replaced with a steel one, which increased the overall weight of the motorcycle. For a visual comparison, consider the Yamaha Diversion 600 (1992) model in the photo below.

The weight of the bike today when fully equipped is about 216 kg. As standard, flat sliders protect the equipment from damage. It is also possible to equip it with an ABS system. The suspension is quite soft and works perfectly. On good road surfaces the bike feels balanced. The steel frame is not practical enough for driving on bad roads; it will be much more difficult to control the motorcycle: but this should not scare you away, because this model has many more advantages. As for the gear shift and clutch mechanism, it has been redesigned for better maneuverability in city traffic. The braking system meets the expectations of even the most experienced drivers. The gearbox is precise and shifts smoothly. The top speed is about 215 km/h, and it accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. Moves away easily, starting at idle speed

All these points, of course, attract the attention of the future buyer, but it’s still worth paying attention to the insides of the model

Yamaha XJ 900 Diversion

- a road motorcycle that lived a long and glorious life on the assembly line. A strong mid-ranger in most respects, this bike was positioned as a universal road touring bike. Everything about this motorcycle is as simple and reliable as possible - the engine, the main gear drive, and everything else. It’s not for nothing that the Diversion 900 is still quite popular, since there are plenty of copies in decent condition on the secondary market, and the motorcycle is not very expensive.

Of course, the now outdated design of the Diversion immediately catches the eye, but this entire series, starting with the Yamaha XJ 400 Diversion, emphasized endurance and simplicity of design, rather than design. To some these days this bike may seem unsightly, but its main advantages still lie not in its appearance, but in the fact that the Diversion 900 is an almost eternal motorcycle, with proper care, of course. When creating this road tourist, Japanese designers were clearly guided by the principle “the simpler, the more reliable.” And it should be noted that they made the right decision - the motorcycle turned out great.

Over the years of production, versions of the Yamaha XJ 900 were produced with some changes, both external and affecting the technical component of the motorcycle. But the basic design of this “Diversion” has always remained unchanged - a steel frame, an in-line 4-cylinder air-cooled engine and a reliable cardan drive. The engine, depending on the year of manufacture, has slightly different performance, but all versions of the Diversion 900 can produce up to 90 horsepower, give or take, and about 75 nm of torque. The indicator is quite good, even taking into account the fact that the cardan takes away some of the power. The gearbox on all 900 cc “Diversions” is five-speed, and the engine is powered by carburetors. The maximum speed is just over 200 km/h.

The dry weight of the Yamaha XJ 900 is almost 240 kg, which is not small for a motorcycle in this class. If you completely fill the 22-liter gas tank and fill in the rest of the fluids, and hang some tuning equipment like panniers on the motorcycle, and even load them well, the weight of the motorcycle will increase even more. However, despite this, the Diversion 900 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just over four seconds. Thanks to the center of gravity, which is not the highest by class standards, the motorcycle subjectively seems neither light nor heavy, and the seat height of 79.5 centimeters will allow most motorcyclists to firmly reach the ground with both feet.

The “Diversion” suspensions were quite soft and comfortable, exactly what you need when you drive for a long time, and sometimes on not the best asphalt. Of course, this is not a touring enduro, but a purely road motorcycle, but the Yamaha XJ 900 has a smooth ride; this cannot be taken away from the bike. True, the motorcycle does not like sharp maneuvers, and it takes long turns with some effort, so you have to put in some effort for this. However, as a classic road bike, great for both city and touring, the Diversion 900 does very well.

Having installed a fairly powerful motor on the motorcycle, the designers also took care of the brakes. The good tradition of installing three brake discs, which began on the small-capacity Yamaha XJR 400, has not bypassed the Diversion 900 - the bike boasts three brake discs. It cannot be said that its brakes are distinguished by some kind of phenomenal grip, but they work, in any case, to a solid four.

In the Yamaha XJ 900, the world saw an excellent motorcycle - versatile, reliable and quite powerful. Of course, a touring enduro or luxury tourer will cope with travel better than the Diversion, and a compact modern naked bike will win in urban conditions, but the Diversion 900 is good at a little of everything. This is an excellent motorcycle, balanced in all respects, which, coupled with its low price on the secondary market, makes it very attractive both as a motorcycle for every day and as a weekend bike.

Yamaha design: as always in its splendor

The body of the Yamaha Diversion 600 was enlarged, resulting in a large and comfortable seat, which is important for long rides. Both the mirrors and the panel board are located as much as possible for the driver of the bike, and the ergonomics themselves are excellent

The ride quality of the motorcycle allows you to feel great both in a big busy city and on a breathtaking ride on the highway. The braking system is balanced and makes it possible to accelerate and brake effectively even in the most unexpected situations, which adds a definite plus to safety. But the most important innovation is that now the Yamaha Diversion has begun to look larger and more massive: it is for this quality that experienced motorcyclists choose. Yes, with such a model it can sometimes be inconvenient in traffic jams around the city, but the external solidity and internal characteristics more than make up for this drawback.

As for her appearance, she also managed to stand out with a variety of colors: green, black, red, blue, silver-gray, purple, burgundy, yolk. Over time, a color scheme in a stylish metallic shade was added to the model: now the Yamaha Diversion 600 motorcycle has become noticeable on the road from afar. The developers chose non-standard colors after each change and improvement of the bike in accordance with the reaction of regular customers. The Yamaha Diversion 600 is a low-slung, lightweight and compact motorcycle: such features contribute to good streamlining, which significantly improves maneuverability in various situations on the roads.

All this includes the Yamaha Diversion 600: the photo below shows in detail how everything looks from the place where the bike is controlled.

Differences from similar motorcycles from other companies

What makes the Yamaha Diversion 600 special? The answer is this: the developers sought to bring to life the most comfortable qualities for driving and controlling a motorcycle. The model was modernized with newfangled inclusions - a cunning headlight with a “side size” star in the forehead, “turn signals” placed along with the number at a respectable distance from the “tail”, and especially a newfangled exhaust under the “belly”. The high-strength steel tube from which the diamond-shaped frame is constructed provides a balance of lateral stiffness, thereby increasing the smoothness of cornering.

The chassis of the Yamaha Diversion 600 has a modern design, is narrow, compact, impressively comfortable and light, which is important for driving motorbikes in large cities with narrow streets

From the point of view of a typical buyer of such equipment, who does not need adrenaline in a bunch of turns, but the ability to get to a place as safely as possible and with minimal fatigue, this type of bike will be ideal for him. The rigidity of the system is not lower than before, but we also tinkered with comfort, reconfiguring the suspension and increasing the fork angle at the same base. It is also worth noting that Yamaha Diversion motorcycles are suitable for both beginners and experienced, seasoned bikers. The tubular frame has significantly reduced the dimensions of the bike and its weight, which makes it possible to steadily adhere to a given trajectory. A motorcyclist of average to short stature can easily touch the ground with his feet at low speeds when maneuvering. The instrument panel contains a modern analog tachometer, as well as a functional monitor with a speedometer. This model is equipped with a tachometer needle with a luminescent coating and LED illumination of the main panel, which makes it easy to control the situation even at night

And this is not the least important point when choosing a future purchase.

Produced in three colors:

  • Extreme Yellow.
  • Midnight Black.
  • Cloudy White.

Yamaha has also developed a huge number of accessories for this model for comfortable travel at any distance. The compact motorcycle "Yamaha Diversion-600" is easy to ride. An important role in describing the advantages of “Diversion” is played by a very stylish external appearance, which, combined with Japanese capitalism and the absence of significant disadvantages, makes the model attractive to a wide audience.

Reviews from owners about the Yamaha Diversion 600 bike are not very enthusiastic, although generally positive. Unfortunately, a large man is somewhat uncomfortable behind the wheel and still needs to try to look in the rearview mirrors. For spoiled motorcyclists, it seems too predictable and calm, although for a beginner this is sometimes worth a lot. There are very different opinions about traveling long distances. Some are wildly delighted, and some are dissatisfied with the fact that the seat is too thin and too hard for them to go on a long journey with pleasure and comfort.

Specifications

The FZ6R was a successful model in all respects, and Japanese engineers decided to offer the public a cheaper version, which became the Yamaha XJ6. By replacing the light-alloy frame with a steel one, reducing engine power and generally simplifying the design, they achieved their goal - the bike became more friendly, and its cost noticeably decreased.

Engine

Derated to 78 hp. The liquid-cooled inline-four, borrowed from the Phaser, has excellent traction almost from the very bottom, although the maximum torque of 60 Nm is available only after reaching 8000 rpm. But, unlike the donor, the Yamaha Diversion completely lacks sharp dips and pick-ups in different speed ranges

This makes handling much more predictable, which is very important, especially for beginner motorcyclists. From a design point of view, the engines of these motorcycles are almost identical, the main difference lies in their settings

Transmission

Proven 6-speed gearbox, as reliable as a Swiss bank. It works noisily and slightly rough, which is especially noticeable when the engine is not yet warmed up. The gears are engaged with a knock that shakes the entire motorcycle, but when “hot” everything is quiet and smooth. In any case, the gearbox is extremely reliable, and you can only get problems with it if you don’t care about maintenance.

Chassis and brakes

The brakes on the Yamaha XJ6 aren't as impressive as those on its sporty siblings. Front and rear there are two 298 mm discs (2-piston calipers) and one 245 mm disc (1-piston caliper, respectively), which are enough for satisfactory braking intensity, but nothing more. The situation is saved by the ABS system, which was offered as an additional option, as well as the replacement of conventional brake lines with reinforced ones. The suspensions are short-travel (130 mm front and rear), and preload adjustment is present only at the rear monoshock. The front fork is devoid of any adjustments.

Electronics

All electronics in the XJ-6 are securely hidden in the bowels of the motorcycle, and they are not afraid of rain and moisture. The wiring is laid out very thoughtfully, so that chafing of the wires due to friction against metal and plastic structural elements is excluded. There is nothing more complex in the bike than ABS and a digital instrument panel, which, by the way, is perfectly readable in any light.

Weight and dimensions

The curb weight of the bike ranges from 205 to 220 kg, depending on the configuration, which is several tens of kilograms higher than that of the Phaser. This is not surprising; the steel frame alone, which replaced the aluminum one, immediately added a lot of weight. In terms of size, this model can be called medium; it is quite comfortable for pilots of any height and build.

Controllability

Perhaps this is the main advantage of the bike, which all owners mention in their reviews. It obeys the steering wheel perfectly, and at any speed. The XJ-6 draws a clearly visible trajectory before the pilot’s gaze, even on serpentines and in long turns, for which it is sometimes even called “boring.” But most motorcyclists consider this behavior of their two-wheeled friend to be an undeniable advantage over its competitors.

Fuel consumption

According to the manufacturer's statement, average fuel consumption does not exceed 5 liters. In fact, it can be higher, up to 6-6.5 liters, if you like to drive aggressively or just fast. The gas tank capacity is 17.3 liters, and the bike will indicate that you have already switched to reserve fuel reserves when there is still 3.2 liters of gasoline left in the tank. You can pour AI-92, although, judging by the reviews of the owners, many prefer not to save money and pour AI-95.

Review of the Yamaha XJ 600 S Diversion motorcycle

The choice fell on an old diversion-600 from 1994, which retained the factory paint and looked very cheerful. Naturally, I had no illusions about this spendthrift, I didn’t expect anything supernatural. The further acquaintance turned out to be all the more pleasant. The first thing I immediately noticed was the very comfortable fit and low weight. Well, with low weight everything is clear - everything that was recently weighed sometimes more than 300 kg, but here it’s not even two hundred. The ergonomics immediately reminded me of another Yamaha - HyZheRa, which is still for me in this matter almost the standard of pilot comfort among the classics. A wide seat, an upright seating position, legs in place, a classic steering wheel - all this contributes to a very comfortable ride. Further more. The simple air-cooled motor turned out to be very elastic and high-torque, the relatively low power is compensated by the high torque at the bottom - the engine moves quite confidently from just two thousand revolutions. Well, then it all depends on the driving style, or on the situation: if you want, slowly accelerate, changing gears at six thousand, if you want, turn it up to the red zone (it starts at nine and a half). In this case, the motorcycle demonstrates quite acceptable acceleration dynamics, I was prepared for the worst, to be honest... The gearbox works very clearly, you know, before that I always considered the Honda to be the standard for the clarity of gear shifting - here I just want to write that the gearbox works “like a Honda” fabulous".

But what really pleased me was its maneuverability. Having become accustomed to the habits of the sledgehammer-max, the first few days I simply enjoyed maneuvering in the stream. The “sabotage” control at any speed is simply excellent. The brakes, despite the fact that there is only one disc on the front end, are very decent for its weight and dynamics. The suspension also handles unevenness very well.

Today I have been using the motorcycle for a month, the mileage during this time is about 2500 km, and we can sum up the first results. The impression is definitely positive; personally, having sufficient experience with a wide variety of motorcycles, I definitely received more than I expected. The motor is easy to control and operate, very obedient, and will forgive almost all mistakes for a beginner. At the same time, it is capable of delivering pleasure to more experienced riders. For driving around the city, it’s simply an excellent option, given the excellent handling and quite decent dynamics, as well as the ability of the engine to pull confidently throughout the entire operating speed range - there are no dips or unexpected pick-ups. I can’t say anything about long-distance trips yet, at most I drove it to Yaroslavl (270 km one way), but I used to wander around the city all day long - nothing gets tired - neither my back, nor my arms, nor my butt. Consumption in the city is about 6 liters per hundred, an 18-liter tank is enough for about 300 km, which is also very pleasing. At speeds up to 160 km/h the ride is quite comfortable, but above that it starts to feel a bit deflated.

Among the minuses, I can note the noisy operation of the clutch on a cold engine, but in general this is a feature of all “Yamahas” with air engines and is not a defect, as well as the fact that for some reason this motorcycle is not very popular among us, which a little strange for me. In my opinion, it can give a head start to the Honda SV-400, with which it costs approximately the same, in all respects without exception. The motorcycle was produced only for the European and American markets; this model was not sold within Japan. Therefore, if necessary, spare parts for the engine will most likely have to be ordered from Europe or Belarus. There are no problems with consumables - filters, pads, etc. unified with many domestic Japanese models; spare parts sellers have this model in their catalogs - verified.

I’ll also add that on the way from Europe, someone removed the rear caliper somewhere on my copy, I had to look for it. I found it quite quickly - using the “trying on” method during analysis, it turned out that it is absolutely identical to what was installed on the old FJ 1100 without ABS and on the FZX 750.

So. I bought it for 122 thousand rubles. Mileage 26 thousand km. The condition is good. Compression is normal. I managed to drive almost 4 thousand km on it.

Consumption from 4.2 liters when driving on the highway at 120 km per hour and up to 6 liters in the city in traffic jams and when torsionally. I drive quite calmly and very rarely the engine spins above 7 thousand revolutions, and the speed is above 120 km per hour.

I drove a maximum of 120 km in one sitting and then my backside starts to ache. It's a matter of habit, as the seat is soft and wide. All switches are at hand, there is a flashing high beam and emergency lights. At 120 it doesn’t blow, I sit straight.

The pendants work very well. When braking sharply, the front bites noticeably, but this device is not for sports driving. By the way, the vehicles that came out in 1998 are equipped with two brake discs in the front, but since they were much more expensive on the Internet, and the condition was rated much worse and the driving style did not imply braking from 200 km per hour, I decided to buy the device whose condition I liked it the most.

I bought it with a 33-liter case and good consumables in the form of new rear tires and a slightly worn front tire, as well as a live set of sprockets and chain.

I don’t really feel the rutting of the road, since the rear tire size is 130 in stock, mine is 140. The vehicle drives very well in a straight line, bumps are absorbed, there has always been enough power so far, and the same with number two. It holds its course confidently in turns. The engine spins from the bottom up to almost its red zone of 9500 rpm.

Very nice little things, some of which I got very used to in Yubra, namely:

— central stand!!

— fairing.

— handles on the passenger side.

— inspection window for oil level.

— o-ring chain.

— “flashing” high beams and emergency lights.

- light. it was unusual when the fairing was in place and did not turn with the steering wheel)

— the gas tap has 3 positions: “reserve”, “open” to drain fuel and the “on” position. In the “reserve” and “on” positions when the engine is turned off, gasoline does not flow (no vacuum). That is, the tap always remains in the on position and is not touched unless necessary.

The disadvantages are obvious and not very.

— vibration from 4-5 thousand rpm is significant, then it decreases. but there will be vibration on any rather large engine.

— the device is not light, so you need to be more careful with the gas and brake when turning. It’s much harder to push than a Ubr, but it rides excellently and comfortably on the highway.

— an air vent, so it works with a clanging sound and it seems like something is wrong. Treated by a trip to a couple of services for personal reassurance.

— we can attribute the presence of a fuel pump, which reduces reliability.

I owned an old diversion 600 from 1993 for a season and a half. Nothing has ever broken (I don’t count the clutch cable as a breakdown. **** from old age, I waited 3 weeks for a new one, it cost a thousand rubles). It was consuming oil, drained it, changed it to Motul 5100, it was consuming another liter by inertia, then it suddenly stopped, apparently it had become carbonized, I don’t know what was filled in earlier.

I rode it at a maximum of 190, then it was kind of scary, it’s light and afraid of side winds. The brakes suck, but I only had one disc at the front; after ’98, it seems like they installed double-disc brakes. Because of the narrow rear cylinder, it’s scary to lay down, the contact patch is very small, it wants to break into demolition.

The standard headlights suck, they don't shine. It consumed very little gasoline, from 4 to 7 liters. It’s comfortable in the aisles, the moped is narrow. I once caught a wobble. On the left side, the turn signal and mirror immediately broke, the steering wheel was bent, the chain fell off (without consequences), and the plastic was worn off. The mileage was about 45 thousand. At this mileage the clutch needs to be replaced. The standard exhaust is quiet, it’s scary to roam between the rows, drivers don’t see or hear.

I still ride Diva, born in 1993. 57,000 km of travel. A motorcycle for everyday use. Regarding oil: I tried Motul 7100 and didn’t like it. It was a bit rough and, as a result, the engine and gearbox worked hard in my opinion (returned to 5100).

I squeezed 190 out of it as much as possible (even at this speed it’s not scary), then everything just rests, while the tachometer showed about 8000 rpm. Perhaps the previous owners changed the sprockets with a different number of teeth. But even this speed is enough on the highway (or rather, it is not needed for travel))). After 4000 there is good dynamics for a 60-horsepower engine.

Unlike “sports”, the motor pulls confidently even from 1500 rpm (this is a huge +, especially in the city). It’s also good to drive through mud, but here road tires make you aware that even with a little gas the wheel starts to slip. The narrow rear wheel did not fail once when laying down, but it creates inconvenience when the road is rutted.

About the light: I wanted to install xenon, but then I realized that the standard light is OUT OF THE EYES!!!! Fuel consumption is low, the cubic capacity is the same as that of 2 IZhs (power as well), and the consumption is 2 times lower. Of course, when you unscrew the throttle, the consumption increases 2-3 times.

Brakes: I have 1 disc at the front, but it still gave me a couple of gray hairs when I almost flipped the bike over the front wheel. The motor is noisy (an “advantage” of the air vent). Although the mot is red, it is not always noticed even during the day. RESULT: a motorcycle for confident (thanks to the long engine life), calm (120-140 km/h) everyday planing over the road surface))). The motor is completely self-repairing (seriously, no complicated parts or settings), everything is accessible. The unpopularity of this model is simple:

1. The weakest among single-cube models (but here the advantages that come from this may outweigh the small number of disadvantages).

2. Air vent (seems to be a minus, but upon careful analysis you find quite a few pluses).

In short)))) a motorcycle for quickly moving a rider who is not in a hurry))))).

Go to Yamaha XJ 600 S Diversion

A new version

The new Yamaha XJ6 Diversion is a completely different motorcycle. It doesn't have the disadvantages of the first generation. And the price is very, very attractive. The model is perfect for beginner motorcyclists.

In general, the Yamaha XJ6 is a kind of variation of the Yamaha FZ6 (this unit has been sold in Europe instead of the XJ6 since 2009). In the American market, the XJ6 is called the Yamaha FZ6R. The appearance of the Yamaha XJ6 motorcycle in Europe is associated with the desire of the company's management to offer motorcyclists a low-power and budget model that would be aimed at the maximum number of potential buyers. The XJ6 is much cheaper in price, taxes and insurance than the original Yamaha FZ6 (98 horsepower engine).

It is worth noting that many manufacturers try to create very powerful and fast motorcycles, but for some reason they sometimes forget about transport for beginners. But this is more than it seems at first. This is a model for beginners, for girls, and for those who simply love measured motorcycle riding. It is very gratifying that at least someone produces real things for this large category of buyers.

Return of "Diversion"

Over time, the improved Yamaha Diversion 600 (2009) comes out, which has become a new and improved embodiment of the old model. The manufacturers' idea was to minimize the shortcomings of the progenitor, while creating a motorcycle with simpler controls and a competitive price, which the developers succeeded in doing. They coped with the task, the new product looked more expensive than it cost, and its consumer qualities became significantly higher than those of previous models and competitors. The Yamaha Diversion 600 is available to many potential buyers looking for a comfortable and less expensive motorcycle model in the market.

Prices

The cost of a used model in our country starts at 250 thousand rubles. The average price of a motorcycle without mileage in Russia is from six thousand dollars. As a rule, the condition of imported motorcycles is much higher. But when buying at an auction abroad from home, you must understand that you are assessing the condition based on the photo. The Yamaha XJ6 is a reliable motorcycle, and motorcyclists abroad are responsible people, but there is a risk of running into a careless fraudster.

It is quite possible to find a decent motorcycle in our country with mileage throughout Russia. You need to thoroughly check the motorcycle before purchasing in order to know about all its subtleties and nuances. The surest option, if your funds allow you, is to personally go abroad to buy a motorcycle, choose the best one, bring it into Russia, go through customs clearance and then enjoy your new bike in perfect condition.

Optional equipment

The manufacturer has developed a lot of additional equipment and accessories for this model. Almost all of them are aimed at making travel on this motorcycle more comfortable, especially when it comes to long trips. Provided:

  • Protective bars for the driver.
  • Engine protection.
  • Special linings for the fuel tank.
  • Tank bag.
  • Central stand.
  • The top case has a volume of almost (40 liters and 50 liters). The case is equipped with a backrest and an internal bag.
  • Aluminum trunk.

This is not a complete list of “extras”; we have listed only the main accessories that are relevant for long trips.

Disadvantages to consider before purchasing

As with all other bikes, this Yamaha model also has disadvantages:

  • Vibration may appear after 4 thousand revolutions.
  • Maximum care should be taken when operating the brake and gas due to the weight of the device.
  • The reliability of the motorcycle is reduced due to the presence of a fuel pump.

And despite everything, the Yamaha Diversion-600 is still a very interesting model of motorbikes in this category. At first glance, it seems like nothing supernatural, but your impression will change as soon as you try to drive the first hundred kilometers. Ease of control, reliability in operation, and presentable appearance evoke admiration from even the most advanced motorcyclist. Summarizing all the nuances described above, we can note the following: undoubtedly, the positive aspects of this model are that the Yamaha Diversion 600 can be controlled well at high speeds, and the low price will be a pleasant argument for a large target group of buyers. The disadvantage is the noisy operation of the clutch system, which leaves a not very pleasant feeling. The Yamaha 600 was not delivered to the CIS countries for a long time or arrived in a shabby condition, so today it is not so easy to find a Yamaha Diversion in our country. You can try turning to classifieds sites: there you can easily find many used motorcycle models and more.

Advantages and disadvantages

Despite the fact that this bike was born as a simplified and cheaper “younger brother” of the Phaser, it has much more advantages than weaknesses. The model turned out to be not only commercially successful, but also successful in all respects, and it was discontinued only so as not to create internal competition for the new bikes from the MT line.

Advantages

  • Low cost of maintenance. Spare parts and consumables cost moderate money.
  • Excellent dynamics and high top speed.
  • High reliability and huge resource of all main components.
  • A combination of excellent maneuverability and predictable engine operation.
  • Versatility - the bike was equally well suited for short trips and very long ones.

Flaws

  • Noisy engine. This makes it difficult to superficially diagnose potential faults.
  • A lot of weight for a road 600.
  • It is very difficult to drive on dirt roads.

Forwarding models

Prior to the introduction of the 2009 models, the series consisted of four main models; XJ600S, XJ600N, XJ900S and XJ900GT and the lesser known YBR125 Diversion.

XJ600S Diversion / Seca II

XJ600S known as Diversion

in most countries around the world, but as
Seca II
in the North American and Australian markets. The bike has a small upper fairing, although a lower fairing is available as an accessory. The XJ600S is a descendant of the XJ600 models produced between 1984 and 1991. It is powered by a 598cc 8-valve inline-four engine. CM air-cooled, 61 hp. (45 kW) and 55 Nm (41 ft-lb). . The original XJ600's engine was tuned for improved low- and mid-range power, sacrificing some peak power.

600cc Diversion models SM were produced from 1992 to 2004. US Seca II were produced from 1992 to 1998. Since the Diversion/Seca II design is based on an earlier, well thought out model, the changes made to the bike over the years have been fairly minor. mainly concerned improvements to the fairing: a second front brake disc and a small oil cooler appeared on the 1996 model, along with improvements to the carburetors.

The Diversion prefers an upright riding position more than most 600cc sportbikes. See what makes it convenient for commuting. It remained in production for quite a long time, probably due to its low price, modest fuel consumption, durability and reliability.

XJ600N

The XJ600N is almost identical to the XJ600S except that it is a naked bike and the instrument panel is different as it rotates with the handlebars. This model was not sold in North America.

XJ900S/XJ900GT

The XJ900 is a descendant of the earlier XJ900 model. The XJ900S and XJ900GT are both the same basic motorcycle except the GT, typically a touring motorcycle, has a large fairing and two Krauser K2 panniers while the XJ900S has a small upper fairing similar to the XJ600S. The instrument panel (wider than 600 cc models) has several additional gauges, such as a fuel gauge. It is a sports tourer powered by an 892cc, 8-valve, air-cooled inline-four engine producing 89 hp. (66 kW) and 85 Nm (63 lbf⋅ft). The XJ900S/GT is shaft driven and the 600cc models have a drive shaft. See - chain drive.

XJ900S/GT is known in the European market as Diversion 900

. In the United States, the bike appeared as the 1983 Seca XJ900RK.

Police versions

The Yamaha Diversion has been used as a police motorcycle all over the world. These models are manufactured by Yamaha to the specifications of individual police departments. Typically the XJ900S is chosen for police use, but the XJ600S has also been used. Police specification Diversions are usually designated as XJ900P (P for Police), although Yamaha refers to them by the regular model designation (XJ900S or XJ600S) as they are not a separate model.

XJ6 Diversion, XJ6 N and XJ6 Diversion F

In 2009, Yamaha relaunched the Diversion line with the introduction of the XJ6 Diversion, XJ6 N and XJ6 Diversion F. The former has a semi-closed fairing, while the N version is a naked motorcycle. The fully faired FZ6R is the American equivalent of the European XJ6 Diversion F, minus the lack of ABS and electronic immobilizer. The engine is a detuned Fazer engine and both versions are offered with optional ABS braking system. The new range is upgraded to a 16-valve forward-leaning parallel 4-cylinder engine developing 78 horsepower (57 kW) / 59.7 Nm. Yamaha retained the engine displacement at 600 cc. See for the new Diversion line.

The YBR125 Diversion was also available in France around 2005.

Yamaha XJ 600 Diversion

- a classic road motorcycle with some claim to the title of “road tourer”. Of course, it still does not belong to the class of touring bikes, but, nevertheless, this balanced, structurally simple and inexpensive road bike is really suitable for many different purposes, including long trips. First going on sale in 1992, the “Diversion” was produced until 2003, partially overlapping the years of production with the Yamaha XJ 900 Diversion. However, it should not be confused with the XJ6 Diversion, produced since 2009 and which is a lightweight and slightly cheaper version of the FZ-6.

Over all the years of production, the XJ 600 has not undergone any changes and was produced in the same form, existing in two versions - S (with a plastic body kit) and N (without plastic, with a round headlight), and positioned as a budget classic motorcycle , suitable for both beginners and experienced motorcyclists. It's true - the bike's friendly and easy-going nature will forgive the mistakes common to novice bikers, and at the same time, its technical characteristics are good enough to keep more experienced riders busy.

The basis of the Yamaha XJ 600 Diversion is a steel frame into which an archaic 4-cylinder in-line air-cooled engine is inserted. It has a very smooth character with no kicks or dips, and works best at mid-range speeds (peak power at 8500 rpm), producing 61 hp. and 46 Nm of torque. If you sharply open the gas while driving, a miracle will not happen, but the motorcycle will not move away from under the driver - it will simply begin to accelerate smoothly. The dynamics of the XJ 600, of course, are not amazing, but from 0 to 100 km/h this motorcycle accelerates in 4.7 seconds and the top speed is 180 km/h. The long gears are also pleasing - you can switch to sixth at 100-110 km/h, if you wish.

Representing a universal “classic”, the XJ 600 is medium in size and, due to this circumstance, will suit most motorcyclists in terms of comfort. The seat height is 77.5 cm, which will allow almost everyone to confidently touch the ground with their feet, and the dry weight of approximately 180 kg allows you to move the bike on the spot or roll it around the parking lot without any problems. The standard seat is surprisingly soft and comfortable, unless, of course, you come across a copy with a saddle that has been heavily dented over the years. The steering wheel is comfortable, although tall drivers may want to raise it a little higher so that it does not rest on their knees. The analog instrument panel is easy to read, the visibility in the widely spaced mirrors is also pleasing, and the standard fairing on the Yamaha XJ 600 S copes well with headwinds.

The chassis is nothing special here. The classic telescopic fork cannot boast of having any adjustments, but the rear shock absorber is adjustable for preload. The suspension is generally soft and comfortable, but the XJ 600 does not like sharp maneuvers, reminiscent of the XJR 1200 model. The front wheel has only one brake disc with a 2-piston caliper. However, starting in 1998, the motorcycle acquired a second front brake disc, which improved the situation.

So what do we end up with? A budget and structurally outdated road motorcycle, which, nevertheless, is highly reliable and is excellent for a variety of purposes. Travel around the city to work and back? Easily. Go to the sea? It’s also possible, fortunately the 17-liter tank and gasoline consumption within 6 liters give a good power reserve, and the fairing saves you from headwinds. Take a ride through the night streets in the evening? It’s also easy, the speakers of the Yamaha XJ 600 are enough to keep you from getting bored. For its price, this motorcycle is very good, and today too. Its main competitor is, perhaps, the Suzuki Bandit 600, which on average sells for the same price and has similar characteristics.

Results

The motorcycle is worth the money they ask for it. The model is not suitable for experienced motorcyclists due to its lack of power and aggressive character. For beginners or lovers of measured riding, this behavior of the motorcycle is undoubtedly a great advantage.

Yamaha XJ6 is a simple and inexpensive model, unpretentious and unbreakable. A motorcycle without any obvious “blunders” or any design flaws. As a bonus, you get a stylish and modern design that looks much more expensive than it actually is.

With such a motorcycle you won’t be able to stand out among experienced motorcyclists, but you will always be able to make a splash on beginners or people who are far from the world of motorcycles. Moreover, everyone's tastes are different; not all motorcycles need to be super powerful and move at jet speeds.

Target audience: who is this model suitable for?

Thanks to the strong power flow of the six-cc engine, which is easy to control, the Yamaha Diversion 600 is a versatile bike that performs well both on crowded city streets and on highways. It does not require frequent maintenance and you can save a decent amount of money on future use. Finishing elements and modern design make this unit one of the brightest representatives of the middle class.

Manufacturers have contributed a lot to the new version of the “Diversion”: the improved model “Yamaha Diversion-600” (2014), the tuning of which you can also choose at your discretion, has an extremely successful design and provides the opportunity to correct it at your discretion in any good car service center.
