"Yamaha MT 07": technical characteristics, engine power, maximum speed, operation and maintenance features, owner reviews

Triumph Trident and Yamaha MT-07

I think you are already aware that the segment of mid-sized naked bikes is currently experiencing a boom. And it’s not that there are a lot of models there... it’s just that the ones that exist are very good. Manufacturers relied on a new layout - high-torque engines, compactness, convenient ergonomics, modern electronics - and the result was, in fact, a new class of motorcycles that are really convenient in city life. This includes the heroes of my story today, Triumph Trident and the updated Yamaha MT-07.

Both of these models are truly comfortable everyday bikes that are affordable and easy to ride. But at the same time fun and versatile. The seat height of both is 80.5 cm, both motorcycles are light (184 kg Yamaha, 194 kg Trident), almost the same displacement: 689 cc for the 270-degree inline two MT and 660 cc for the inline three Trident. Both produce about 70 hp from the wheel (though Yamaha doesn’t provide numbers, but that’s what the dyno is for), and both cost relatively reasonable money.

In short, at first glance, the manufacturers followed similar paths. But it turned out that similar characteristics do not mean anything - the motorcycles turned out to be quite different.

Controllability

Creative owners of the Yamaha MT-07 in their reviews call the released model “the cute side of Japan,” noting its cute, even cute appearance, and compact dimensions. With a curb weight of 179 kilograms, the motorcycle is truly light and petite, and the ideal 51/49 weight distribution and low center of gravity only lighten these kilograms.

The Yamaha MT-07 is distinguished by its understanding and obedience. The motorcycle was originally created for driving in dense city traffic, which is reflected in its handling: the driver only needs to slightly change his position in the saddle for the Yamaha to smoothly change direction.

It’s difficult to call the MT-07 a station wagon: it’s too light and compact for long hauls or travel—the wind on the highway simply blows it off the runway. Dimensions again play against motorcyclists taller than 180 centimeters, despite the high handlebar, which takes the load off the back. Like any other naked, roadster or road bike, the Yamaha MT-07 is possible to ride, but quite challenging.

Yamaha MT-07. Light side of darkness

Last year, Yamaha introduced two new motorcycles in the MT (Masters of Torque) series: 07 and 09. The new “torque masters”, by the character inherent in the reborn series, personify the “dark side of Japan”. And if this applies 146% to the MT-09, the test of which you will find in one of the upcoming issues of the magazine, then the younger sister - the “seven” - is a slightly different matter

May the Yamaha creatives forgive me for coming up with the excellent slogan for the updated MT series, but I can only classify the new urban naked MT-07 as one of the “nice side of Japan.” Or darkness, or power, or whatever. And the point is not that the motorcycle is for children or a toy - far from it! Although it is indeed very compact, miniature and light - lighter than many in its class - only 179 kg when loaded, and with its low center of gravity and ideal weight distribution (51% rear, 49% front) these kilograms are “lightened” even more . It’s just that MT-07 is such a tame little devil, very cute and cute, but just about ready to show his claws, teeth, wings and tail.

However, he will not direct them against his master: the “seven” is distinguished by some unimaginable obedience and understanding. They say that particularly intelligent horses understand the rider's orders by the movement of their knees and other subtle cues. Same with MT-07 - I just thought, I just moved a little, and it already did everything! All that remains is to smile enthusiastically, utter admiring interjections and onomatopoeia, and get the thrill of riding in the element for which this motorcycle was created - in dense city traffic.

Snooping between cars in the 7 is a pleasure. Making pretzels in narrow streets, avoiding hatches and bumps is another. Speeding along the highway is the third. Although the MT-07 still cannot be called a station wagon: for traveling or just long hauls it is too small and light - on the highway it naturally begins to blow off the runway. And for a driver 180+ cm tall, in principle, it is not very suitable precisely because of its size, despite the high steering wheel, which allows you to relax your back. Yes, and riding together on an MT-07 is a conditionally possible undertaking, in fact, just like on any other roadster, naked bike, road bike, and anything else except tourers and some cruisers. And no one will convince me otherwise!

But what a joy the engine is! The new two-cylinder 689 cc in-line engine of the “cross-plane” type (this is when the flashes in the cylinders do not occur simultaneously) produces almost 75 “honest” horsepower, not regulated by any ultra-modern electronics. The “Seven” can move around the city in third gear alone: the torque and elasticity of the engine is enough to drive without touching the shift paw at speeds from 30 to 100 km/h - standard city mode. But even after 100 km/h, the MT-07 retains a sufficient reserve of dynamics; you don’t even need to turn it too loud (I don’t like it when technology screams): the peak torque, 68 Nm, occurs at 6500 min-1. The engine, for example, the Honda NC700, is much duller, more boring and practically requires an “automatic”. It is clear that the concept behind these engines is completely different, but how much more fun it is to ride the MT-07, even if it eats twice as much as the NC700... Eh!

The nature of the MT-07 power unit is more similar to V-twins - in this regard, the “seven” competes with, for example, the Suzuki Gladius: it is even a little more comfortable in terms of vibrations, which in the in-line Yamaha twin appear almost at minimum speed, and at medium speed turn into constant small trembling, albeit not very annoying. But in terms of the softness of the suspension, the MT-07 outperforms the Susa, despite the fact that on the Yamaha you can only adjust the spring preload of the rear horizontal monoshock absorber, and on the Gladius you can also adjust the forks.

Crossplane technology - 270° crankshaft angle, uneven cylinder flares - makes the inline-two similar to V-twins: linearity and abundance of torque throughout the entire operating range

The “Seven”, like a solid four, copes with all the standard imperfections of the road surface, it does not move on markings and in ruts, it does not shake the soul out of the driver on uneven surfaces. The chassis is typical for its class: an inverted front fork, a steel asymmetrical swingarm, a steel diagonal frame with a supporting engine and a horizontal shock absorber - nevertheless it turned out to be light and quite rigid, and Michelin Pilot Road III tires provide excellent grip. On the Yamaha MT-07 you can even have a little fun and frolic, but don’t forget about safety. After all, this is the good side of evil!

Specifications

The Yamaha MT-07 cannot but please with its engine: the power of 75 horsepower of the 689 cc two-cylinder in-line cross-plane engine is not limited by any modern electronic systems, which is good news. The torque, dynamism and elasticity of the engine are more than enough to move around the city in third gear and in the speed range from 30 to 100 km/h. The reserve of dynamics is preserved even after reaching the coveted hundred square meters - peak torque of 68 Nm occurs at 6500 rpm. In terms of characteristics, the Yamaha MT-07 leaves far behind the same Honda NC700, whose engine is more boring and requires an automatic transmission, but consumes many times more than its competitor.

Chassis

The MT-07 engine is in many ways similar to V-twins thanks to Crossplane technology - the main competitor, for example, is the Suzuki Gladius, which is somewhat more comfortable in terms of vibrations. The regular two-wheeler Yamaha MT-07 begins to vibrate finely already at minimum speeds, and at medium speeds a constant and quite noticeable trembling appears, even if you can ignore it. At the same time, the Yamaha has much better suspension than the Suzuki, despite the fact that the Gladius has a much wider range of settings, affecting both forks and shock absorbers.

Modifications

In 2016, the chassis, frame and engine of the Yamaha MT-07 were used to create the Yamaha XSR700 scrambler and the touring version of the Yamaha MT-07 Tracer, known as the Tracer 700. The modification was offered in the Australian and European markets and featured increased suspension travel and a larger fuel tank. and the presence of a front fairing.

Motorcycle Yamaha MT-07 Tracer GT 2022 review

The description of the Yamaha MT-07 Tracer GT 2022 motorcycle is in the queue for publication of the article. Announcement: Today, for almost every new motorcycle that comes into being, marketers strive to carve out their own niche. This one is a road sport, this one is a recreational enduro. But what class should we include a motorcycle that has a little bit of everything? A good bike should have a reliable engine, comfortable ergonomics and simple controls...

Yamaha MT-07 Tracer GT is a motorcycle not sold in Russia, equipped with a high-power 55 hp engine. Despite the fact that good models of motorcycles have a very respectable price, and the season for their use is relatively short, the motorcycle market is developing rapidly. And if you believe the words of dealers, then some models of recently released motorcycles are selling like hot cakes at the beginning of the season, and the models brought to Russia are clearly not enough to fully satisfy consumer demand.

A motorcycle has long ceased to be an alternative to a car, and the times when this equipment was bought only because there was not enough money for a full-fledged car are forgotten. Nowadays, two-wheelers can be called technological marvels in many cases, and their cost can be compared with that of prestigious cars.

Many people have started buying motorcycles for hobby purposes as riding or even collecting them has become a good pastime for many people. Many motorcycles, for example the Yamaha MT-07 Tracer GT, whose technical characteristics allow the model to be called a prestigious brand, are in demand among both beginners and experienced motorcyclists.

Motorcycles with an engine capacity of 689 cc / 42.04 cu-in. see, appeared as a result of long work of inventors who sought to create a model that was not inferior in characteristics to other versions of the motorcycle. In some cases, these models are not only not inferior, but also ahead of other motorcycles, as they have minimal fuel consumption and other excellent parameters.

Motorcycles with an engine capacity of more than 400 kb. cm, which includes the Yamaha MT-07 Tracer GT - this category of motorcycles simply cannot claim the title of “motorcycle for a beginner.” On the contrary, this is already a serious technique that requires certain control of motorcycle equipment with a smaller engine capacity. Yes, she attracts more attention, she is the most beautiful, fast, interesting and there is a huge selection of models. But as power increases, the weight of the motorcycle inevitably increases. In this class you are unlikely to find motorcycles lighter than 180 kg, unless they are the latest motorcycle models.

Fit and comfort

The Yamaha MT-07 boasts a comfortable seating position, ergonomic placement of the instrument panel and controls, but it comes with a fairly hard seat with a small “pocket” for the passenger. However, nothing surprising: after all, the MT-07 was created as a city bike, devoid of wind protection and not intended for the exploits of station wagons. In addition, everything is more than paid off by its attractive and impressive appearance, excellent handling and powerful engine.

Triumph Trident and Yamaha MT-07. Electronics

The story about Yamaha's electronic assistants will be short: they are not here. I’m sure many will like it: no riding modes, no need to turn off traction control - just a small angry motorcycle and complete freedom of action. ABS, without which motorcycles will soon cease to be produced altogether, does not count - I consider it an absolute plus, especially if it could also be turned off. But alas.

Otherwise, the MT-07 is a fairly modern motorcycle: an inverted LCD instrument panel, diode turn signals, everything is as it should be. The instrumentation is perfectly legible both day and night, and the standard Yamaha turn signals have finally stopped looking like pumpkins and look quite elegant and modern. Hooray!

But the Triumph Trident is chock-full of electronic aids, at least compared to other 650cc naked bikes. There are two driving modes, switchable traction control, non-switchable ABS, support for GoPro and communication with a smartphone - and all this works through a TFT instrument panel. A small, hard-to-read instrument panel with a small, unclear and confusing menu - in a word, absolutely a C minus. The two of us barely managed to figure out how to set the clock here - and maybe we are not the smartest guys in the world, but we probably didn’t make the tidy for them either.

Reviews

The Yamaha MT-07 copes well with all the unevenness of the track, maintaining course both along the markings and in the rut, and dampens all vibrations. The rigid and lightweight chassis, standard for naked motorcycles, features an asymmetrical steel swingarm, diagonal frame, inverted fork and horizontal shock absorber, coupled with Michelin Pilot Road III tires, providing excellent grip. The power and dynamics of the Yamaha allow you not only to maneuver in city traffic, but also to drive along the highway at fairly high speeds, without forgetting about safety.

The brake system of the motorcycle, unfortunately, is quite weak, although the four-piston monoblock calipers placed on two-leaf discs look very impressive and solid. Effective and fast braking is only possible with the rear brake. Keep this in mind.

In comparison with competitive models of the same class, the comments made on the Yamaha MT-07 are not so serious. Perhaps, Japanese engineers managed to come close to the ideal by creating the MT-07 - the motorcycle has compact dimensions, is lightweight, maneuverable, and is equipped with a new engine with serious potential across the entire rev range. Excellent handling and obedience make it the best option for beginners.

The Yamaha MT-07 has become the embodiment of innovative technologies and a modern motorcycle, far removed from classic and conservative solutions in motorcycle construction.

Triumph Trident and Yamaha MT-07. Brakes

In the 2022 version, the MT-07 brake discs have grown from 282 to 298 millimeters, and in general the braking system is quite powerful - you just need to squeeze the lever with two fingers. So I have no complaints about the Yamaha brakes, the braking force is modulated well, and the ABS will not let you slip over the steering wheel. The only problem with the MT-07's brakes is the Triumph Trident.

As with everything, the Triumph Trident is significantly more composed and efficient in the braking department. It is assembled on steel-reinforced lines that provide excellent feedback at the lever. It brakes more powerfully and more informatively, and against the backdrop of a very good fork that does not bite or lose its trajectory during trail breaking, the MT-07 is even better here.
