Honda Valkyrie 1500: Boxer heavyweight

Japanese motorcyclesHonda motorcycles

This is the easiest to handle super-heavy cruiser motorcycle. This is the pinnacle of conceptual thought embodied in a high-tech machine.

This is the best cruiser of all time. Any publication about this motorcycle must begin with a similar phrase.

What kind of supermotorcycle is this, without which not a single official review, not a single conversation among hardcore bikers can do?

Yes, this is the Honda Valkyrie, the flagship of Honda's motorcycle industry.

Buyers' opinion

There are not many super-heavy motorcycles in the world, and the Valkyrie model has been in a dominant position since its introduction.
The owners of the bike note the popularity of the magnificent machine; as soon as you go out onto the track and stop before the start, a crowd gathers around. It is characteristic that the motorcycle’s passport data does not indicate the maximum speed. This concept is too vague, the “Valkyrie” does not demean itself to high speeds, it is not appropriate for it to rush along the highway or “fly” along the autobahn - a superbike has other tasks. 160 km/h – a motorcycle lives in this relatively calm mode, although it can easily double this figure.

The Honda Valkyrie, which receives extremely rave reviews, is the dream of millions of bikers, but buying a motorcycle is not so easy. The fact is that the already established owner is unable to part with the luxury car, realizing that he will never see the Valkyrie in his garage again. There is a special psychological moment here, which is in no way unrelated to the commercial component of the transaction. Therefore, a motorcycle often becomes the cause of the so-called “eternal owner” syndrome, when it is not sold in principle and under any pretext.

Chassis and brakes

The NRX1800 is equipped with an aluminum frame that is almost entirely chrome-plated, which looks very impressive. The alloy wheels are nothing particularly remarkable. The steering wheel is typical and comfortable. The model has an electronic immobilizer capable of electrically locking the steering wheel.

At the rear, the bike has a progressive swingarm suspension with a monoshock absorber. The device stroke is 100 mm. The front suspension has 100 mm of travel and is not adjustable in any way. It is lever type. A 336 mm disc along with a two-piston caliper acts as the rear brakes, while the front brakes are two 330 mm discs and three-piston calipers.

Honda Valkyrie review

The basis for the new Valkyrie was the Honda GL1800. The frame with the engine and suspensions was taken from her for the new motorcycle. Almost all of the trim panels have been removed, with the exception of the decorative molding on the engine.

Strong and well-built, he again broke out from generally accepted concepts. The low stance convinces us that this is a purebred cruiser, but the cartridge front suspension, rear console swingarm and huge diameter brake discs tell us that this is a bright representative of the street bike.

Indeed, the new Valkyrie weighs 70 kilograms less than its donor Honda GL1800. The redesign of the new Valkyrie has attracted a cohort of young drivers more inclined to sporty driving than serious trips on wide and deserted highways.

The Valkyrie's power unit is a modified variation on the theme of the six-cylinder Gold Wing, with a volume of 1832 cubic centimeters and a power of 118 hp.

The torque of 169 Newton meters will give odds to more than one passenger car. The camshafts of the boxer engine are driven by timing belts with a huge service life of 160,000 kilometers.

The six carburetors have been replaced with Honda's Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) system, which features six electronically controlled high-pressure injectors. Electronics ensure the most efficient combustion process.

Not without a closed exhaust system with two lambda probes and catalysts, providing the power unit with unprecedented purity of emissions.

An additional air intake duct and corresponding exhaust system tuning have changed the exhaust note, the low revs of which seem to vibrate even the body of the driver of this perfection.

Less weight and engine modernization have added quite a bit to the acceleration of the motorcycle.

Even to such an extent that the motorcyclist, at maximum acceleration, has to squeeze as much as possible into the gas tank and hold on to the steering wheel so as not to be thrown out of the saddle.

The gearbox shifts very quickly. During fast acceleration, efficient gear shifting is facilitated by the clutchless gear shift system.

The large mass of the motorcycle, but the low location of the engine, does not allow you to feel all its 340 kilograms of weight, not only in motion, but also when parking.

Large weight also implies the presence of a well-balanced suspension. Due to the lengthening of the front fork, its inclination increased, which led to an increase in the wheelbase to 1.707 meters.

The inverted front fork and cantilever rear suspension are slightly stiffer than those of the donors, which allows it to change the ground clearance less on turns and asphalt waves.

The steering is slightly heavier due to the increased fork angle and larger wheels, which are 19”. The rear wheel is oversized and significantly wider than the front.

The greater efficiency of the braking system has been increased by increasing the diameter of the brake discs. The diameter of the two front ones, located on both sides of the front wheel, is 310 millimeters, and the rear – 316 millimeters. The effectiveness of the braking system is also enhanced by the optionally installed ABC system.

The changed nature of the motorcycle dictates a change in its interaction with the driver. The rider's position has changed accordingly.

The steering wheel is located 38 millimeters higher and 33 millimeters further than on its predecessor. The width of the steering wheel has increased by 17 millimeters, which somewhat made steering easier, but made parking more difficult, since when the steering wheel was fully turned, its handle began to be located further from the driver.

As a result of these changes, the driver's seating position has become more inclined, which has made the rider more comfortable during strong head winds and acceleration.

The bike's lack of wind protection as standard is compensated by good airflow redirection from the front of the bike over the rider, and wide radiators keep the rider's legs warm in cold weather.

A handlebar with a standard one-inch diameter allows the motorcycle owner to take advantage of standard motorcycle accessories produced in a wide range.

The Honda Valkyrie is supplied to the Russian market in black and red versions.

Second generation Valkyrie Rune (2004–2005)

The logical development of the Valkyrie family, naturally, should have been the transition to a new 1832 cc engine with a chain instead of timing belts and washers instead of valve rockers. And so it happened, but with a huge caveat - the engineers gave everyone a surprise by creating, based on units from the Honda GL 1800 Gold Wing, an absolutely unsurpassed and unique motorcycle, the Honda NRX 1800 Valkyrie Rune (“runes” are amazingly beautiful mysterious symbols from ancient times, revered by the Vikings Scandinavian alphabet).

Designers from the American division of the Honda concern began working back in 1997. They took the Zodia concept (1995) as a basis. Based on it, three years later, a total of four design projects were prepared (with sequential markings from T 1 to T 4). The extremely unusual T2 variant won a landslide victory in a specially organized vote (according to rumors, the last straw was when one of the potential buyers immediately offered $30,000 for a pre-production sample). The bold and, of course, brilliant sketch immediately went into production. “Rune” cannot be fully called serial. In less than two years (2004–2005), no more than 1,200 copies were to be released. The effort that went into creating the motorcycle was justified not by actual revenue, but by exclusivity. According to verified data, the serial numbers encrypted in the VIN number have definitely crossed the 1400 mark.

Describing all the beauty of Valkyrie Rune is a thankless task. This must be seen in person... even the most seasoned motorcyclists' jaws drop low. No one has ever created anything like this! The engineering component is in no way inferior to the external decoration. One way or another, all donor units underwent changes. Much (such as the entire body kit, dashboard, front fork, headlight, rear LED brake light and much more) was created specifically for this project and was not subsequently used anywhere else.

The nature of all modernizations is aimed at instilling in the cruiser the habits of a sports motorcycle. The engine was sprung up by changing the injection and exhaust systems - the number of throttle valves tripled (from two to six), the exhaust line became much shorter (the sound is simply magical!), and the gear ratios in the gearbox changed. As a result, the power rose to 118 hp. s., and fuel consumption naturally increased (12.5 liters per “hundred” is far from the limit). Suspension is a separate issue. The engineers took the risk of using a cantilever rear wheel with a horizontal central shock absorber like the RC211V racing car on their longest and heaviest road motorcycle, using a fantastically beautiful rear wheel as a cherry on top of the cake. At the front, everything is much more interesting - its majesty is a lever fork chromed to the very tips of the handlebars, which works as great as it looks. Naturally, there was no intervention in the braking system - 330 mm discs and calipers from Fireblade settled in front, one 336 mm disc in the rear, connected to the front circuit in a combined system. The output turned out exactly as ordered. The “Runa” handles surprisingly under control, accelerates briskly and brakes well, nothing prevents you from going on a trip on it or driving through any, even the most crowded metropolis. The relatively low seat height allows a person of almost any height to sit comfortably. One of the factors preventing excessively frisky driving is small tilt angles, only 32°. On 33s, running boards are used, on 34s there are wildly expensive exhaust pipes.

The design does not have any pronounced weak points. Such motorcycles cannot go on sale until they pass a fine sieve of various checks. It’s not Japanese to release limited editions and not be proud of them down to the last screw! Apparently, the presence of an excess in serial numbers is associated with tests for strength and durability. It seems that several hundred copies never left the factory gates. They were diligently tortured with resource and other tests for the sake of the general well-being of the model (an unverified fact - official Honda representatives refrain from commenting). As in the case of Gold Wing, you should handle the gearbox very carefully, avoiding shifts without the clutch or with incomplete squeezing, as well as long driving under tension. Any, even minor, gearbox repair starts from an amount of 60,000 rubles. It is a good habit to periodically check the cardan drive and then tighten all related threaded connections. This will eliminate oil leaks and sweating. It is almost impossible to kill the engine or cause it to fail with at least timely maintenance.

The fundamental commandment that guarantees no problems with the “Rune” is “Don’t fall!” Very weak contact with the asphalt at near-zero speeds is still compensated by the protective arches, but then the extravaganza begins. And the sadder it is, the stronger the pillar, curb, someone’s car or just the road surface. The prices for any body repair are inhumane. A competent mechanic, to whom a broken “Rune” was brought for restoration, is simply obliged to cry bitterly and send the most terrible curses on its owner.

Before carrying out any repair and maintenance work on your own, you should think twice. Careless handling of many chrome parts can lead to disastrous consequences. Any scratch, broken screw or chip will negatively affect the price and aesthetics of the motorcycle.

Despite the limited release, the number of units on sale is quite large. There are both absolutely stock copies and significantly modified ones. Almost every major salon that sells second-hand goods keeps one or two Honda NRX 1800Valkyrie Rune in stock for added status. Prices only increase from year to year. The entrance ticket will cost from 750,000 rubles, the upper limit is 1,500,000 rubles. There are practically no spare parts in stock; absolutely everything is available to order, but it is expensive. “Consumables” (except for specific rubber) are unified with other Honda motorcycles. The conversation about service is to a certain extent utopian - there is no point in turning to the garage overlords of old Japanese motorcycles, and the officials won’t be of much help. The way out of the situation is to search for a specialized club service based on recommendations or particularly careful thematic mechanics.

Modifications

In 2004, the Rune motorcycle appeared in the Honda Valkyrie lineup, an improved concept development based on the base model. The latest achievements of high technology were used in the design. The Honda Valkyrie Rune was considered a masterpiece of its time. The motorcycle is equipped with a flat-six engine with the following characteristics:

  • total cylinder volume – 1520 cc/cm;
  • cylinder diameter – 74 mm;
  • compression – 9.4;
  • piston stroke – 71 mm;
  • maximum power – 132 hp. With.;
  • food - six PGM-FI carburetors;
  • gas distribution - timing with timing adjustment of valve opening;
  • mufflers - three on each side, combined into one chamber;
  • ignition – electronic;
  • starting – electric starter;
  • transmission – five-speed gearbox with lever shift.

Chassis of the Honda Valkyrie Rune model:

  • front suspension – reverse telescopic fork with hydraulic recoil and travel amplitude of 130 millimeters;
  • rear suspension – articulated pendulum with two hydraulic shock absorbers on the sides, free swing 120 mm;
  • front brake – paired perforated discs with two-piston calipers;
  • rear brake - single, non-ventilated disc with two-piston caliper;

Main modifications of the Honda GL 1500 C Valkyrie

Honda GL 1500 C Valkyrie is a regular classic version.

Honda GL 1500 CT Tourer Valkyrie - touring version. It is distinguished by the presence of a windshield and lockable side cases. Curb weight - 349 kg. Version available from 1997 to 2000.

Honda GL 1500 CF Interstate Valkyrie is a fully touring version. It features a plastic fairing with a windshield, plastic side and central panniers, a passenger backrest and a 26-liter fuel tank. Version available from 1999 to 2001.

Despite the presence of interesting modifications of the Honda GL1500C Valkyrie motorcycle, they were not in great demand, and therefore were quickly discontinued. The basic classic version of the Honda Valkyrie 1500 remained available on the market until 2003, after which it also disappeared from sale. Instead, in 2004, Honda released a limited edition model of the Honda NRX1800 Valkyrie Rune, built on the basis of the new version of the Gold Wing 1800, and at the end of 2013 it introduced a new reincarnation of the F6C model - the Honda GL1800 F6C Valkyrie.

First generation (1996–2003)

The first generation “Valkyrie” (Honda GL 1500 C Valkyrie, also known as Honda F 6 C) is a real motorcycle with a capital “M” of the word, without unnecessary marketing impurities, only engineering technologies, which, first of all, should impress those who understand they are of use.

The first to appear on the market in 1996 was the basic version of Valkyrie Standart. We must pay tribute to the designers who successfully incorporated into the chassis a boxer six-cylinder engine, which is not typical for this type of motorcycle, having previously thoroughly refined it with chrome. Stylistically, the motorcycle is designed using classic motifs and techniques - a large round headlight, deep fenders, a teardrop-shaped tank, a curved steering wheel, a classic instrument panel in two chrome glasses, a massive seat and strict color options.

In addition to the “Valkyrie” in the Standard version (produced from 1996 to 2003), there are two additional configurations that differ in body kits. The Tourer package (produced from 1997 to 2001) is designed with an easy focus on tourism. It has a high windshield and two hard side luggage cases. A limited edition Valkyrie Tourer, equipped with a reverse gear, was released for the Japanese domestic market. Valkyrie Interstate (produced from 1999 to 2001) is a motorcycle with its own charisma, a kind of “Golda”, but in a more brutal and iron design. On board is a huge head fairing with a large oval two-section headlight and a massive windshield, three hard luggage cases and almost an entire chair instead of a passenger seat. The downside of such a tail is the increased drag area, which results in unstable behavior at high speeds with noticeable sway of the stern caused by the central pannier.

The basis for the construction of the first generation Valkyrie was the old Honda GL 1500 Gold Wing. During the transition from the luxury tourer class to the cruiser class, the engine and chassis have undergone a sufficient number of changes aimed at increasing traction and improving handling.

In comparison with its predecessor, the Valkyrie received significantly reinforced upper and lower cross members, a powerful 45 mm inverted front fork (the Golda had a rather loose 41 mm telescope), two serious shock absorbers in the rear suspension, a reinforced rear swingarm and a frame of a modernized design with increased rigidity for torsion. A separate point is the experiments with wheel (tire) sizes that flow from generation to generation. Read more about this in the sidebar.

When creating the engine and power system, engineers tried to increase overall reliability along with an increase in power and a shift in the torque curve to the low-speed zone. The changes made were the replacement of hydraulic compensators with simpler and more reliable mechanical rockers, a transition in the power system from two Keihin CV carburetors to six Keihin VPKOD / E carburetors, different gear ratios in the gearbox and a modernized exhaust system. As a result, the Honda GL 1500 C Valkyrie, in comparison with the Honda GL 1500 Gold Wing, having lost a little in maximum speed and efficiency, has significantly gained in acceleration dynamics (3.9 seconds to 100 km/h from almost any gear) and engine elasticity.

People generally consider all “Valkyries” to be absolutely indestructible, and this is in fact true, but no one has canceled timely maintenance. A large resource, however, is finite, and it is better not to test its limits. What few weaknesses there are on first-generation motorcycles is mainly a consequence of the impressive mass, with the aggravating factor of insufficiently smooth road surfaces.

The first thing I would like to note is the very weak front brakes, borrowed from the skinnier brothers in the model line. The deceleration dynamics are in no way suitable for the weight of even an unloaded motorcycle. The calipers cope with their duties very hard, when the speed exceeds 80 km/h you can already forget about emergency braking. Due to constant excessive loads, after a mileage of 60,000 km, the pads break the front caliper brackets, and a clanking sound appears (especially when used on uneven roads). Usually, by this mileage, the front brake discs need to be replaced (most often not even the first, but the second). There are no questions about the rear brakes; in any version of the Valkyrie they are quite adequate. Seasoned owners know that in order to slow down effectively, it is necessary to combine and correctly distribute the force (start with the rear brakes and gradually increase the front ones).

The inverted fork, quite modern for its time, has a hard time - it’s hard for it to support such weight, and it’s very weak in torsion. Breakdowns often occur; if you get into a small hole, the motorcycle can become unstable, float in one direction or another, moving away from the intended course. When there is a breakdown, the fork begins to shed tears of oil with enviable regularity. Oil seals should only be replaced together with guides! It is better to fill the oil thicker than what the manufacturer requests.

It is worth noting that if you operate the Valkyrie on good roads, then the above-mentioned shortcomings in the front suspension should not be considered as such; the owner will not even feel them, but rather, on the contrary, will enjoy the smoothness and softness of the ride and how pleasantly the huge motorcycle steers.

There are no significant complaints about the engine. It perfectly maintains runs well beyond 150,000 km and does not require any oil topping up. Even the most well-rolled specimens keep their level from replacement to replacement. It is important to change the air filter and oil promptly. Once a year or every 12,000 km, it is highly recommended to synchronize six carburetors (the cost of service work is 2000–2500 rubles). Many owners do not pay attention to this procedure, citing power (even if one cylinder fails, with such a reserve of torque you will not immediately notice it). As a result, not everyone understands how the Valkyrie can drive and operate with the correct factory settings. From time to time, curious cases come across when all six cylinders live their own lives - some have a rich mixture, some have a poor mixture, some are trying to work at 1000 rpm, and others at 950 rpm. There is only one outcome - the slow but sure death of the engine! There are no complaints about the K eihin carburetors that have been tested over the years. Apart from periodic (once every three to four years) maintenance (work costs an average of 4,500–6,000 rubles), nothing more is required. After a long period of inactivity (especially in winter), one or two carburetors may leak. The problem can be solved quickly and easily by washing the locking needles. The clutch lasts for 100,000–120,000 km, replacing it is a rather complicated process due to the non-standard layout (the cost of service work is 7,000–8,000 rubles). The gearbox is mistakenly considered a weak unit. The key to successful operation is the correct choice of speed and appropriate speed, as well as careful switching.

Don't forget about the timing belt. The manufacturer claims its record service-to-service mileage is 160,000 km. But once every 30,000 km it is worth inspecting for the presence of dust (it is an abrasive for the belt) and be sure to check the tension (the price of service work is about 3,500–4,000 rubles). Once every four to five years, it is better to completely change the belts due to the fact that rubber tends to harden. It is advisable to combine these operations with checking the thermal clearance in the valves (once every 20,000–30,000 km, cost: 3,000–4,000 rubles).

The idea of building a huge overgrown cruiser around a monstrous six-cylinder slab is extremely strange and extraordinary, but just as brilliant! The motorcycle, for all its obvious considerable dimensions and frightening weight, turned out to be the best in its class in terms of handling, dynamics and comfort. Many thousands of model lovers around the world cover hundreds of thousands of kilometers on long-distance trips and city bustle without any difficulties.

Demand in the secondary market for the first generation is stable – good for all three trim levels. This is an ageless and undying classic, which practically does not lose value when resold. Availability of spare parts and various types of accessories is very good. In the showrooms of official dealers there is a little bit of everything, but in aftermarket and original catalogs there are parts for every taste and budget.

Description

The Honda Valkyrie 1500 cruiser model was first introduced in 1996 and was produced until 2003. The model had the factory designation Honda GL1500C, was sold in the USA under the name Honda Valkyrie 1500, and in other countries it was known as the Honda F6C. The abbreviation F6C stands for - Flat Six Custom - a cruiser with a 6-cylinder boxer engine.

The motorcycle was based on the engine from the luxury tourer Honda GL 1500 Gold Wing with a number of changes and improvements. Firstly, the engine began to be equipped with 6 carburetors, one for each cylinder (instead of 2 on the Gold Wing 1500). Secondly, the engine received new camshafts, which significantly increased the dynamics of the motorcycle and increased the maximum engine speed. Thirdly, instead of hydraulic compensators, the Honda Valkyrie 1500 receives a conventional valve clearance adjustment (screw-nut). Fourthly, the bike gets a new 6-6-2 exhaust. As a result, the engine began to produce a “net” 100 hp. (on the wheel) and almost 140 Nm of torque.

In addition to modifications to the engine, the Honda GL1500C Valkyrie receives a new super-rigid steel frame, changed gearbox ratios and loses reverse gear (except for the version for Japan - it had the possibility of rear reverse gear).

The Honda Valkyrie 1500 was produced only in the USA, at the Marysville plant in Ohio. Most of the motorcycles were intended for the North American market, the rest were exported to European countries, Australia and Japan. The motorcycle became one of the first high-volume cruisers with an atypical layout for this class, in particular a 6-cylinder boxer engine. Nevertheless, the model turned out to be extremely successful and immediately gained wide popularity. A total of 48,420 motorcycles were produced and sold, of which only 6,670 units. found themselves on the market in Europe and Australia.

Other features of the Honda Valkyrie 1500, in addition to the 6-cylinder boxer engine, include an inverted fork (the right blade acts as a guide, the left one responds to damping), a timing belt drive, the presence of a motorcycle fall sensor (turns off the ignition when falling on its side), hydraulic clutch, disc brakes front and rear, 20 liter fuel tank (Interstate version - 26 liters) and 334 kg curb weight (regular version).

Introduction

According to Scandinavian-German mythology, Valkyries are quite lively and powerful warrior maidens who, during battles, fly over the battlefield on winged horses and pick up fallen warriors. In the Land of the Rising Sun, names are not thrown around just like that - the “winged” motorcycle being considered today will take anyone anywhere with the inexorability of a missile cruiser...

Engineering experiments in the motorcycle industry are definitely an interesting thing. At a certain point, all Japanese manufacturers decided to play gigantomania. Honda's attempt turned out to be one of the most unusual, but at the same time effective.

I would venture to suggest that Honda decided to make the most productive use of their wonderful boxer engine, on which they spent so much effort and energy, and build another line around it, different from the Goldwings. This is how one of the most anti-canonical cruisers, Honda Valkyrie, was born.

Peculiarities

The design features cause some inconvenience when servicing the motorcycle. For example, replacing a rear tire on regular bikes, which is simple here, starts with removing about half of the attachments.

As users expected, after the announcement of the anniversary, the motorcycle should have received many new ideas. Among them noted:

  • engine - 6 cylinders provide “locomotive” traction at all speeds.
  • There is no need to adjust the valves - the bike, through hydraulic compensators, will take care of the necessary clearances.
  • two carburetors - with six cylinders.
  • suspension with automatic adjustment based on a pneumatic drive, all settings options.
  • a pair of springs on the pendulum.
  • audio - first Kenwood, then Panasonic, even on a stripped-down version.

Repair and tuning

Due to its relatively complex design, this model is not easy to tinker with. More precisely, you can do almost all operations on your own, but they will require the well-coordinated work of several people. If you have a garage and a couple of friends willing to help, go ahead!

Repair

There is nothing extremely complicated in the design of the Valkyrie 1800, so repairs, if necessary, can be completed independently, and there is nothing to say about maintenance. Official dealers are always ready to obligingly handle any motorcycle transactions, but most bikers will not like their prices.

Tuning

There is little branded Honda tuning for this model, and not that much non-original stuff. And what we have is expensive. The problem is that “universal” tuning for cruisers looks on the futuristic Valkyrie like a saddle on a cow, so it’s difficult to achieve a harmonious appearance.

Specifications

Beginners should give this motorcycle a tenth of a ride until they gain enough experience to handle it. The Honda CBR600RR has characteristics that fully correspond to the title of a sportbike. This model was developed on the basis of a purely racing RC211V, which was simply adapted for public roads. Hence the explosive nature and all other features characteristic of specialized equipment designed for the track, and not for city streets.

Engine

Despite all the improvements and changes, from an operational point of view, the Honda CBR 600RR engine has remained virtually unchanged over the years. It's still the same 4-cylinder, 4-valve, liquid-cooled engine that comes to life and starts showing its character at around 7,000 rpm. After this mark, it has no dips or pick-ups; the torque curve on the graph clearly demonstrates this. Power ranges from 117 to 120 hp, torque reaches 66 Nm, and top speed is 256 km/h. The bike accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.16 seconds.

Transmission

Traditionally, Honda has a perfectly functioning gearbox that never has any problems. Already on the third, the bike is capable of accelerating to 150+ km/h, although, of course, you should not abuse the power. You can switch to the top gear, sixth, when the number “100” appears on the speedometer, and then drive like an automatic transmission. Although for sharp overtaking you can drop a few gears.

Chassis and brakes

The lightweight and durable aluminum frame has already been changed three times, but the overall geometry of the sportbike has remained almost unchanged. The brakes, as with all CBR motorcycles in the line, deserve exceptional praise; there are 4-piston calipers with 310 mm discs at the front, and a single 1-piston caliper with a 220 mm disc at the rear. Since 2009, the Honda CBR600RR has been additionally equipped with a combined braking system with ABS.

Electronics

Auxiliary systems and other electronic stuffing went mainly to the “liter”, but the “six hundred” in this regard is almost no different from the CBR F4i. This is for the best - the predecessor of this model was famous for its reliability, so complicating the design could have a negative impact on it. But it is worth considering that the electrical wiring is not reliably protected from water entering under pressure

The motorcycle is not afraid of rain and puddles, but you need to wash it with some kind of Karcher with care so as not to spill anything on it

Weight and dimensions

Compact dimensions (wheelbase length - from 1370 to 1395 mm) combined with a dry weight from 186 to 199 kg, depending on the year of manufacture, make the Honda CBR600RR a fairly light motorcycle. The seat height is also low, only 820 mm, so most motorcyclists can confidently touch the ground with their feet. And the width at the extreme points does not even reach 700 mm, thanks to which the sportbike freely filters between cars in traffic jams.

Controllability

The combination of modest weight, short wheelbase and low fork angle make this model excellent handling. She is not afraid of sharp maneuvers or taking long turns at high speed, and never loses touch with the road, if, of course, you fork out for good tires. But you need to hold the clip-ons confidently, since hitting a road bump in some cases can lead to wobbling.

Fuel consumption

According to Honda, on average the SBR600RR consumes about 5.5 liters per 100 km. This seems to be true, and in the combined cycle the consumption remains moderate. But if you “drive with all your money,” it will increase, and can reach 10 liters per 100 km at maximum speeds. However, how often do you see straight roads 100 km long on which you can maintain a speed of 250 km/h for a long time?

Honda Valkyrie: Owner reviews

I have been the owner of the Interstate for three years now. I travel far and enjoy taking my wife with me. Many people have spoken about convenience, but I won’t repeat myself. The dynamics and acceleration are magical. On the highway it stands like a glove. The tank lasts me a long time when driving economically. I really like the light. Two powerful headlights allow you to drive at night without straining. I installed Philips halogen lamps - it’s very convenient that you can buy such a lamp at any gas station. I really like the trunks! The capacity is incredible. This is my Honda Valkyrie in the photo. (Vadim, Moscow)

Valkyrie Ran drives like Vtyks, she also eats gasoline, everything is fine, but she looks pompous and pretentious. Of course, this is a very expensive asphalt slab. In general, this is a Honda! Honda doesn't make a motorcycle for the sake of a motorcycle. She produces technology that pleases the soul. (Igor, Vladivostok)

I've been riding a Honda Valkyrie for a year, my height is 185 cm. I have a classic. I installed external running boards. The sofa is comfortable, the seating position is comfortable, I don’t get tired even when running 500 km. It’s great that the motorcycle stays on the road and doesn’t get blown away by passing trucks. About music: the receiver operates on the American band. I will change it next year. While I took the FM player. (Semyon, Nizhny Novgorod)

While “Valka” is standing, it’s terribly heavy. I just drove off like a feather. As soon as he rolled in, he even began to make his way along the aisles. It’s convenient that everyone skips it. The muzzle protects the pilot well from dirt and water. The girls don’t let me pass, my wife is jealous, and she happily rides with me as number two. I love. People on the street too. Attention guaranteed. (Evgeniy, Khabarovsk)

Honda Valkyrie Rune differs from all other motorcycles in its torque and sound. The exhaust system is built according to a 6–6–2 scheme: six separate pipes from the cylinders and a muffler on each side produce a stunningly beautiful sound. Valka pulls confidently already at 800 rpm, and you can move in any gear. At 30 km/h you can put it in fifth gear, the acceleration is amazing. Controllability is maintained at almost any speed. Even at 160 km/h, it sensitively follows the steering wheel and body movements. The rune gives off a feeling of security and confidence. (Maxim, Ufa)

With Valkyrie you understand that reverse speed is not a luxury! It is quite difficult to maneuver when parking and turning around in a confined space. The opposition itself also gets in the way - it’s hard to push off with your feet. Still, for the city it was necessary to take something easier. (Denis, Vladivostok)

Honda Hornet Motorcycle Series

In 1998, the first representative of the Honda Hornet line of motorcycles first appeared on the market. The new CB600F has become a true classic.

Technical parameters of Honda Hornet

Honda Hornet motorcycles have quite acceptable characteristics for city riding. They have been the most influential in the middleweight division for a long time. The design contains sharp lines that are still relevant today.

Fuel consumption is optimal for a city motorcycle. Over time, the Honda Hornet motorcycle has undergone only minor changes, which affected the installation of 17-inch wheels. In 2003, the fuel tank capacity was also increased in the motorcycle line.

In 2007, the Honda Hornet motorcycle appeared before motorcycle fans in an improved guise.

Honda NRX1800 Valkyrie Rune

Honda NRX1800 Valkyrie Rune - This model is a typical cruiser.

At first glance, it is impossible to confuse the Honda HPX1800 Valkyrie Rune with any representative of another class of motorcycles: the characteristic low seating position and enormous length with overall impressive dimensions, as well as the tank volume, make it a classic representative of this niche.

For whom

Here are the main features of the model:

  • 167 Nm and 118 hp;
  • almost the entire exterior of the motorcycle is chrome-plated;
  • The panel backlight adjusts its brightness itself.

These and many other interesting properties make the bike a real discovery for connoisseurs of large, spectacular motorcycles. It’s hard not to notice such a car on the road, which will be a plus in terms of safety.

Specifications

According to its parameters, the Honda NRX1800 Valkyrie Rune is a powerful representative of the class. The engine alone speaks of the strength of this iron horse. The brakes, chassis and transmission are optimally matched to the power and dimensions of the motorcycle.

Engine

The engine of the model is four-stroke, six-cylinder and opposed. Its effective volume is 1832 cm³. The unit is cooled by liquid. The motorcycle is equipped with a fuel injection system and transistor digital ignition.

Maximum performance: at 4400 rpm the torque is 167 Nm, and at 5600 rpm the power is 118 hp. The bike accelerates to 100 km/h in just 3.77 seconds, and its top speed is 198 km/h. This in itself speaks about the performance of the motorcycle, given its impressive dimensions.

Transmission

The NRX1800 is driven by a cardan. The gearbox is five-speed. Nothing more is required from the transmission for this class of motorcycles. However, there is no reverse gear, which is a minor drawback for some.

Dimensions and weight

This motorcycle is quite big. Its width is 920 mm, its height is 1090 mm, and its length is 2560 mm. As befits cruisers, the seat height of the NRX1800 is low - 690 mm. Wheelbase – 1750 mm. The ground clearance is insignificant - only 135 mm.

The curb weight of the bike and its dry weight are very different. The model weighs 398 kg with fuel, and 368 kg without it. This is due to the impressive size of the fuel tank - as much as 23 liters. On average, in practice, the consumption per 100 km of road is usually about 10 liters of gasoline.

Production

The NRX 1800 was produced only for a year, which is due to the fact that this series was limited. In total, just over a thousand of these models were produced. This motorcycle aroused considerable interest with its exclusivity and external gloss.

Among the worthy rivals of this cruiser, one can name only the Boulevard M 109 R from Suzuki. This is a good strong motorcycle with excellent characteristics and design, but perhaps its exterior is still not so stylish.

History of changes

Having started its career in 2004, in 2005 the motorcycle had already rolled off the assembly line. Of course, in such a short period of time he did not receive any changes. The idea itself did not imply them: why change in a limited edition model, the design of which, of course, has already been thought out to the smallest detail.

Specifications

Japanese engineers had something to build on. The Honda Valkyrie Rune, like the classic model, received its engine inherited from the Golda. With the difference that for the Honda Valkyrie Rune NRX 1800 model, the GoldWing 1800 became the prototype. Naturally, a huge amount of work was done on the donor. Instead of two carburetors, the power unit acquired six - one per cylinder. To increase speed, the cruiser's power unit was equipped with new camshafts, which significantly increased dynamics.

Hydraulic valve lash compensators have given way to standard adjustment, which is necessary for every 12,000 km traveled.

The updated engine is complemented by a new angry exhaust and a super rigid steel frame. The frame of the Honda Valkyrie 1500 is very strong and is not afraid of falls. The motorcycle has amazing dynamics - acceleration to hundreds occurs in 3.6 seconds, which is an excellent result for such a weight. Despite its weight, the Valkyrie’s handling is amazing; it’s not for nothing that it was called “the easiest to handle heavy cruiser.” Control efficiency is achieved thanks to the ground clearance and due to the engine rigidly installed in the frame. With the weight of the classic model starting from 334 kg, the gas tank is designed for 20 liters.

The Valkyrie engine became famous for its high reliability. Mileages under 300,000 km. are considered the norm. Thanks to the duplication of most elements, it has become more durable than V-shaped units. For this boxer engine, timely replacement of oil, filters and spark plugs is important. The usual mileage from replacement to replacement is 12,000 km. The Honda Valkyrie 1500 engine produces 100 horsepower at the wheel.

This model also received other innovations:

  • a fall sensor that can turn off the ignition;
  • timing belt;
  • hydraulic clutch;
  • convenient to turn on the turn signal;
  • halogen headlight 60/55 W;
  • large diameter handles.

Squats

The chassis from the Gold Wing, “transplanted” into the F6C model virtually unchanged, gives the power cruiser truly excellent handling for such a large and long motorcycle.
Considering that the chassis of the GL1800 tourer is designed for a completely different weight and provides for the transportation of heavy luggage, without which the harsh conquerors of space and time today do not even go to the bakery, the new Valkyrie feels like a moderately rigid and assembled device. And even when passing long turns at high speed, where in Russia there are usually potholes, cracks in the asphalt, garbage and sometimes dead animals, the Honda F6C surprises with the absence of swing and reluctance to squirm and bend, as most motorcycles in this class usually do! But you shouldn’t expect much comfort from a power cruiser—in terms of convenience, it’s certainly not a Gold Wing or even an F6B. One of the few systems in the new model that has been improved compared to that of the GL1800 is the braking system.

Honda's power cruiser received front brake discs with a diameter increased from 296 to 310 mm, coupled with the use of 4-piston (rather than 3-piston, like the Gold Wing) Nissin calipers and a huge rear 316 mm disc mated to a 3-piston bracket, gives the motorcycle truly outstanding braking dynamics. The device slows down so much that it takes a lot of effort to stay in the seat and not “drive” onto the metal surface of the gas tank!

It’s interesting that when you sharply press the front and rear brake levers, the F6C does not nosedive like most motorcycles, but seems to squat with its entire “body,” as if pressing against the asphalt. I have only seen something like this on the German K1300R roadster, the efficiency of which is practically a standard braking system. Of course, the Honda Valkyrie is equipped with combined ABS, which has become a signature feature of all recent Honda motorcycles.

Honda Africa Twin motorcycle series

Enduro motorcycles attract motorcycle enthusiasts. The prototype of the modern Honda Africa Twin motorcycle is a heavy enduro, created in 1982. In 1988, Honda released a production version of this type of motorcycle technology. Initially, the company used an engine with a displacement of 750 cubic centimeters.

Almost all the time of its existence, Africa Twin had positive reviews. However, even despite this, 15 years after the start of production of motorcycles of this model range, the company decided to discontinue it. This decision was made because the Honda Africa motorcycle had become morally irrelevant for consumers and the brand.

So the Africa Twin motorcycle became a thing of the past for the reason that there was no place for it on the market. However, to replace it, the company began producing new enduros.

Advantages and disadvantages

The model turned out to be controversial, and therefore did not last long on the assembly line. Chopperists are a conservative audience, and they did not really appreciate the futuristic design of the Honda Valkyrie 1800, moreover, its price was quite high. Apparently, the time for such cruisers has not yet come.

Advantages

  • No problems finding spare parts and consumables. Almost everything comes from the GL1800, which is incredibly popular both in Russia and in other countries.
  • High power. The cruiser's technical characteristics are impressive, and thanks to its lighter weight than the Golda, it is very dynamic.
  • Excellent reliability. If you take care of a motorcycle, it will run many hundreds of thousands of kilometers without bothering its owner.
  • Gripping brakes, combined and with ABS. They stop this massive carcass surprisingly well.

Flaws

  • High cost of maintenance. Original spare parts are expensive, as is tuning, the choice of which is small.
  • Almost complete lack of wind protection. And installing a windshield immediately spoils the futuristic look of the Honda Valkyrie 1800.
  • Low ground clearance, only 14.5 cm.

Third generation (2014)

The third generation of “Valkyrie” (Honda Gold Wing F6C, also known as Honda Valkyrie 2014 in the USA) is just beginning its ascent; it is too early to judge its consumer qualities. However, based on the stated technical characteristics, published photographs and presentations, the first conclusions can already be drawn. And, unfortunately, they are not so rosy. It is worth noting that marketers have put their tablets, graphs and demand indicators into the production process with all their might. As a result, by the 2014 season we will receive a motorcycle that is practically devoid of its former charisma, and is more similar to the twice stripped “Golda 1800” (the first time it was stripped when the F 6 B begger was released). The controversial, but at the same time quite laconic appearance is absolutely not supported by noble metal. The vast majority of claddings are made of plastic. Honda tried to rectify the situation as best they could and even equipped their brainchild with a technologically advanced, completely original electronic dashboard and elegant rims.

The new Valkyrie is powered by the familiar, unchanged 1832cc flat-six engine from the Honda Gold Wing. Thanks to a significant reduction in weight (70 kg lighter than the Golda), the power-to-weight ratio has become much more interesting. Experiments with the chassis that have already become traditional led to the fact that a lengthened fork (45 mm telescope) with an increased inclination (from 29.15° to 29.50°) and a reach of 114 mm stretched the wheelbase from 1689 to 1707 mm. The wheel sizes are again non-standard: 130/60–19 and 180/55–17. The driver's footpegs have been moved upward by 33 mm, highlighting the improved handling.

The braking system has risen to a new, but by no means record-breaking level - two 310 mm discs and four-piston calipers are installed at the front, and one 316 mm disc and a three-piston caliper at the rear. At the same time, the anti-lock braking system is listed only as an option; CBS is completely absent.

Among seasoned fans of the model, there is an increased demand for the new product; it is not clear how viable the third generation “Valkyrie” will be – the coming season will show.

Crash tests

Japanese engineers have prudently equipped the Honda Valkyrie with protective bars (from two to four) in all possible generations and configurations as standard. When dropped at low speed, the motorcycle remains in its original form, but it’s not difficult to break things. How long can you skillfully... Valkyrie Interstate and Rune suffer more than others in serious accidents. In the case of the latter, the owner may well part with an astronomical amount of money even in a harmless crash test (the low availability and high cost of spare parts affects it).

Tuning

Various modifications of “Valkyries” are a fascinating process and so endless that finding two identical ones can sometimes be difficult. Almost everything is tuned. Particularly popular due to the interchangeability of parts is the procedure for transforming first-generation motorcycles from a simple Standard configuration to an extended Interstate. Games with external transformation and screwing in various kinds of plastic begin with innocent little details and end with the construction of a luxury tourer with lights, heating and a bunch of additional trinkets. You can often find quite competently installed and configured music systems. As always, “Runa” stands apart - for it the choice of components is a little poorer, but much more “correct” from an aesthetic point of view, but the prices are sky-high.

In Europe and the States, there are also seriously charged examples for drag racing. Everything is used - from mechanical superchargers to turbines (fortunately, the engine is strong). Americans often have fun building original trikes based on the F 6 C.

Transmission and chassis

Speaking of gears, all versions of the Valkyrie, including the Honda Valkyrie Rune, except those intended for Japan, have lost reverse gear. The 5-speed gearbox is reliable and works perfectly. The clutch engages clearly and shifts occur without any complaints. The average service life on our roads without repair is 50,000 km. The cardan, which many dislike, works like a clock and does not require special attention. Of all the concerns - regular monitoring and replacement of oil in the gearbox. The mileage between replacements is 38,000 kilometers.

The front suspension of the Honda Valkyrie 1500 with a stroke of 130 mm has a somewhat strange design. A massive inverted fork consists of an empty right feather - a guide, and a left one - a working one. Both rear shock absorbers are pre-adjustable and are also reliable. Stroke – 120 mm. The weak point of the rear shock absorbers is the bushings. Average service life is 50,000 km.

The Honda Valkyrie 1500 was equipped with disc brakes: twin front and single disc rear plus a caliper with two pistons. Like everything else on a cruiser, the brakes work well if serviced regularly. Fluid replacement is required once every two years if the mileage is relatively short. For those who like to travel – after 24,000 kilometers. Don't neglect cleaning your brakes every 6,000 kilometers.

In general, this is a more than worthy device from Honda. The leader among cruisers and, practically, a collector's motorcycle. It’s not so easy to buy a Valkyrie, it’s not so easy to sell it – it’s hard to part with it. This is a motorcycle both for the soul and for travel. For the city and for long routes. Its synonym is reliability.

Motorcycle modifications

  • Honda Valkyrie Rune 2004. Only 1,500 motorcycles were produced, so they are expensive. What did you want - exclusive! The Valkyrie Rune has quite a lot of differences from the Gold Wing, including the engine - different camshafts, 6 throttle valves instead of 2, reconfigured ignition. It is impossible to find unique parts for it, although large tuning companies like Corbin even produced a separate line of body kits for this model - panniers, windshields and seats. Only 20 copies of the 2004 Honda Valkyrie Rune were officially sold in Europe, so almost all copies on the secondary market came to Russia from the USA. The cruiser was produced in 3 colors and two versions, differing only in the steering wheel and the amount of chrome. The rear wing from the NRX 1800 was later used on the Honda VTX1800N.
  • Honda Valkyrie 1800 2014. The main character of our article. During all 4 years of production there were no changes.

Stopping the conveyor

Before the appearance of the Honda Valkyrie model, the photo of which is posted on the page, there was another development - the GL1500, which became the predecessor of the Valkyrie. Strictly speaking, the “one thousand five hundredth” motorcycle began to be called that because it was equipped with a GL1500 engine. The next model, the Honda Valkyrie, was successfully produced until 2003, then production of the heavy cruiser was discontinued. For six months the conveyor stood idle, while work was underway to create a new model. In Japanese industry, it is not customary to mothball any production; plants and factories must operate continuously. But in this case, the engineers of the Honda concern decided to create a super motorcycle that would not have to be modified later.

Approximate price for a motorcycle

New Honda Valkyrie models have only recently appeared on the Russian market.
Before this, used copies of this motorcycle were quite rare and were resold without wide publicity among lovers and admirers of this model. More recently, the Honda Valkyrie began to be officially sold in Russia. The recommended price for it is 1,050,000 rubles.

On the secondary market, mostly copies from 2004-2005 are available for sale at prices ranging from 500,000 to 950,000 rubles.

The new Valkyrie, with its redesigned design, has caused a lot of speculation among fans. Many fans of this model do not like the new design of the motorcycle, which sharply reduces the number of possible buyers. And now Honda is faced with the task of attracting a younger contingent of motorcyclists who love the sporty riding style and appropriate character of motorcycles.

The heavy Honda Valkyrie, which is trying to move away from the cruiser class, but has not yet entered the sportbike class, stands as if at a crossroads, and the success of the model will only be shown by its future sales.

“Honda Valkyrie”: technical characteristics

The bike's features are impressive. If only because it adopted a significant part of the technical characteristics from its predecessors. Nevertheless, the driving performance, as well as the engine capacity and its power, combined with an unsurpassed appearance, win the hearts of even novice motorcyclists.

The horizontal engine with a liquid cooling system has a power of 119 horsepower. The engine capacity is 1832 cubic centimeters. The five-speed transmission provides rapid acceleration and smooth gear shifting. The motorcycle accelerates to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds - this is an amazing performance, especially for such a heavyweight. The fuel tank capacity is 23 liters.

In general, riding a Honda Valkyrie motorcycle, the photo of which eloquently demonstrates its unsurpassed power and dynamism, is a lot of fun: the gears shift very smoothly, and the brakes, if necessary, prove their reliability every time. “Honda Valkyrie Rune” is the heaviest and longest road-type motorcycle.

What features does the new Honda Valkyrie F6C have?

What makes the new motorcycle unique and different from similar ones is its special, laconic design. The bike is the proud owner of a skeleton (frame) made of aluminum, radial tires (small size). This bike has powerful front disc brakes (plus 4-piston calipers). In addition, the Valkyrie has a powerful engine that is capable of producing 113 horses.

If the presented model is compared with the base one, the first one has a significantly different saddle, as well as an optimized mass that divides the weight of the motorcycle between two wheels. The passenger seat, as well as the handles, are removable. Therefore, the motorcycle acquires an even greater degree of brutality. The radiators on the motorcycle are also placed in an original way.

Additional advantages of the Honda bike include the presence of LED optics and a liquid crystal instrument panel. Massive plastic, high engine torque - this is what distinguishes the Valkyrie from similar models.

The company also presented one of the most modern control systems - ABS.
