World Cup 2022, results table, news today: Ronaldo will leave the national team after the 2022 World Cup
Cristiano flies like damn Chester from Cheetos, glistens with shrunken abs and hits brilliant free throws. He is 33, but in the match with the Spaniards he won 5 aerial duels - more than anyone else on the field. He also made all the Portuguese shots on target - without him, Spain would have torn the European champions to shreds.
The World Cup in Qatar should be dismissed immediately. There, the striker will already be 37, and by this time he will either say goodbye to football (total maximalism plus a lesson from Zidane - leave at the peak), or simply focus on club life, without tedious selections and exhausting trips in the Qatari heat.
Euro 2020 remains, but there are two nuances here. Firstly, Cristiano already has this title, which was acquired in a frankly miraculous way. Consequently, there is zero motivation: participating in the European Championship with great chances of losing the crown is a terrible idea, considering how faceless the Portuguese generation is now. There are enough quality players there, but there is no leader: 35-year-old Ronaldo will have to drag the team to a second trophy in a row. An unrealistic scenario, it is more logical to withdraw.
Another reason for leaving the team is the clumsy qualification for the Euro and the tournament formula itself. The selection will be super compact, in just 8 months – from March to November 2022. Four more participants will be determined in the spring of 2020. Remembering how lethargic Krish’s partners are, the process of getting into the tournament can either drag on or turn out to be hellishly stressful and tense. And the Euro itself is also dreary: instead of a holiday for one or two host countries, UEFA organized a Sabbath for airline ticket sellers.
Fans will have to travel to 12 cities, and so will the players. How much Ronaldo needs this is a huge question, writes the Therussiantimes portal. Most likely, it is not necessary at all.
It is important to understand that Cristiano is now fighting for an immensely fat and at the same time long contract with the club. He clearly wants to earn 120-150 million euros over the next 3-4 years, and a potential injury in a match for the national team will specifically cut the budget.
Ronaldo has already proven everything he could. He led to the title, lit up the World Cup (a hat-trick is already in history), there are no achievements left. This means we can call it quits, and it will be reasonable: no one will squeal at the man who fought for the national team for years and became the best player in its history.
