What to do if the scooter does not start from the starter

The relay clicks, but the ATV does not start

Sometimes the following effect occurs: you press the starter button, and a relay under the seat clearly clicks, but the starter does not start moving.
Or at some point it (the starter) seems to catch on for a split second, but immediately stops working. This is especially common in winter, when a large current is required to crank the starter. There may be two reasons for this. And there is a second option - oxidation of the contacts of the starter wires. I didn’t even think that there could be significant oxidation there, but this is what I saw in reality.

I removed the connector and, using a 10 mm socket, unscrewed both terminals of the starter power cable.

I took out the relay and it turned out that the contact pad was noticeably oxidized. But this is where the current flows. Great, let's clean it now.

But that’s something else! Having removed the green part with the contacts (you need to hook it with a thin screwdriver by the locks), I saw that it was a nightmare.

There is even more oxidation on one contact, and on the other there is generally a thick layer of rust! How it even worked is unclear. I scraped off the rust with scissors and cleaned it with a Dremel.

Now everything is in order. You can bet.

Only beforehand I lubricated all contact surfaces with a thin layer of grease. Of course, it would be nice to have a conductive lubricant for contacts or for battery terminals - but where can I get it at the dacha... Never mind, my Castrol LMX lubricant is also suitable for electrics ;). At least all the contacts that I have ever lubricated with it were in excellent condition, there was no oxidation or corrosion anywhere, and the current passed through. So it'll do. In general, it is correct to lubricate not the contacts themselves, but their outside sides, but I do exactly that, incorrectly.

Yes, and of course, you must not forget to clean and lubricate the wire terminals. Fine sandpaper works well for cleaning - for example, I used 1000-grit sandpaper.

So even if everything works well for you, I advise you to spend 10 minutes disassembling, cleaning and lubricating the contacts of this unit.

If the battery is charged, this does not mean that it holds the starting current. Light up your car. It will start, charge the battery. No, look for oxidized terminals on the relay and starter, measure the current at the starter, maybe the brushes are finished.

And if so, it stops starting from the starter when the piston is dead. Measure the compression.

How to start a car if the starter does not work (emergency start)

In case of an urgent start or to check the functionality of the starter, you can start the engine by closing it “directly”.

Starting an engine with a non-working starter using the example of a VAZ 2110-2112 car:

It also happens that after an emergency start of the car, the starter may work. But still, the cause will need to be found and eliminated.

But an easy way would be to push start the car. Passenger cars in 3 speeds start easily with a pusher or tow.

Of course, you can drive without a starter, but suddenly the car stalls on a busy road, and there’s no way to start it. Therefore, we fix problems as soon as possible. If you have to change it, it is better to buy a gear starter; it is superior to a regular starter in some characteristics.

Source

Insufficient fuel

Fuel may not flow due to a jammed carburetor shut-off needle. This is possible when it is clogged, or because the level in the float chamber is out of whack. It is necessary to disassemble the carburetor, blow out all channels and jets with compressed air. You can use a bicycle pump for this. After cleaning, check that the float and the rubber seal on the shut-off needle are intact, and adjust the floats. The position of the floats must be horizontal. Otherwise, by bending the tongue under the locking needle, achieve a horizontal position of the floats on the inverted carburetor. After putting it back together, use a transparent hose to accurately check the fuel level. You can use the VAZ washer hose. by connecting it to the carburetor sump and unscrewing the drain screw, the fuel level should be level with the joint of the bottom cover +/- 2mm as in the figure below:

By the way, if the scooter does not start in the cold, in the morning, or in the fall, then the solenoid enrichment valve is most likely faulty.

The motor belt is damaged

The scooter does not start - there is a spark, there is gas, but there is no reaction. Another source of the problem may lie in a deformed belt in the motor design. This technical element makes a huge number of revolutions during the day. It is located on the same side as the kick starter, under the motor cover. The belt itself is a consumable, replaceable element of scooters, so sooner or later it will need to be replaced. It cannot be restored, all that remains is to buy a new one in a store that sells components for motorcycles.

When purchasing this spare part, it is recommended to pay attention to the overall diameter of the belt and the thickness of the rubber layer - they must correspond to the model of the scooter and its configuration. Otherwise it will not work on your moped

Piston problem

The scooter does not start for this reason. Very often, problems can occur based on wear of the piston complex. An internal combustion engine (two-stroke or four-stroke - it doesn’t matter) consists of several parts: a cylinder, a piston and its pin, as well as piston rings. Worn and worn parts cause the engine to lose power and then break down completely. It is not necessary to buy a new cylinder, since the old version can be restored or bored. It can be made higher than zero. This saves a lot of money.

When replacing it, it is advisable to purchase all components of a new piston in one set. This is necessary so that wear and tear occurs evenly in the future, and not in parts. The piston, like the rings and the pin, must work synchronously. Then the likelihood of your vehicle breaking down will be significantly reduced.

Any breakdown in the case of an inexperienced driver can seem catastrophic, especially if we do not see explainable reasons for what is happening. However, a minimum of knowledge and skills will help to identify the reason that prevents you from starting a scooter and leading a full motorcycle life. Contact a specialist at a car repair shop or try using the recommendations above - any problem can be solved.

Now you can stock up on the information received and figure out in time the reasons why the scooter does not start, and take the necessary measures to resuscitate it on your own in your personal garage or under the supervision of an experienced friend.

So, we have found out the main causes of moped breakdowns and how to fix them yourself. At this point, the main question of the article “why the scooter does not start with the starter” can be considered closed.

Causes of starter failures

There may be several reasons associated with the incorrect operation of the trigger mechanism. You can determine the reasons by understanding the following symptoms:

One of the reasons for the inability to rotate the engine crankshaft and start it is that the low battery charge level does not allow this to be done. In this case, you need to charge it, but how to properly charge a car battery, that is the question. The fact is that if the density is greater than 1.27, then the acid separates from the water, and the heating water leads to an explosion of the battery. Problems should be divided into 2 types: when the engine crankshaft rotates and when only a click is heard. A dead battery is the most common cause. This means that the first step is to check the battery charge level so as not to waste time and do unnecessary work. A more charged battery is especially needed if a car alarm is installed that blocks the starter from starting due to a low battery charge; the starter circuit is blocked if the voltage is less than 10 Volts. Based on this, it should be concluded that it is necessary to periodically recharge the car battery and change it after the end of its service life.

Starters also come in different sizes and power. This is what a standard starter looks like on a Volkswagen car.

Next, if everything is fine with the battery charge.

There are errors associated with the operation of the immobilizer (immo), which due to its malfunction does not allow the starter to start. It's easy to check - insert the key into the ignition and start it directly. It can be solved by repairing or replacing the immobilizer. Such cases happened with the new Ford Focus 2 cars.

The following reasons are associated with symptoms in which the internal combustion engine crankshaft barely rotates:

A characteristic of starters in some cars (VAZ 2110-2112) is that when the brushes wear out, the starter does not even click, because the voltage does not reach the solenoid relay.

Rules for operating a moped

The service life of a moped depends on maintenance. Care comes down to following the rules recommended by the manufacturer.

The main ones include:

  1. Testing a new scooter. The first concerns the running-in of a new scooter. The scooter must not be overloaded for the first 1000 km. When driving for a long time, you must stop every 30 minutes to prevent the engine from overheating.
  2. Correct use in winter. You need to drain the fuel before storing the scooter in the garage for the winter. Remaining fuel can destroy the tank and flood the carburetor. If you plan to use the scooter in winter, you need to change the fuel, check the battery charge, oil level, condition of the filters and tire pressure (it should be about 1.5 atmospheres).
  3. Correct use in summer. In hot weather, it is important to prevent the scooter from overheating. When driving for a long time at 30 degrees, the cylinders will be constantly overheated. This could cause the belt to break or the engine to break down. You should also not squeeze the throttle for too long, and when stopping, immediately turn off the engine.
  4. Use quality fuel. Gasoline must be at least 92. On a new moped, you need to change the oil for the first time after a run of 500 km. Subsequent replacement will be required every 1000 km. The first time to change the oil in the rear gearbox is after 200 km, then every 5000 km.
  5. Replacing the variator belt. This part is considered a consumable item, as it wears out quickly due to the high power load. If the moped stops squeezing out high speed, then the part and its components need to be replaced.
  6. Carburetor maintenance. The procedure includes a visual inspection for leaks and gasoline consumption levels, checking the condition of the connecting elements and the serviceability of the unit elements.
  7. Filtration quality control. The filter must be replaced promptly and impregnated with a special product after installation. This is necessary for high-quality air purification. Dirty air reduces the life of the motor.

Malfunctions in the power system

If there is a spark, but after that the scooter does not start, there is a high probability that fuel is not supplied. To address this issue, start checking at the gas tank. It is advisable if the gas tank is at least half full. To ensure that fuel is supplied to the carburetor, remove the fuel hose from the carburetor by lowering it into a previously prepared container (bottle).

As a rule, scooters have a built-in vacuum gas valve that opens the fuel supply only during startup or operation of the scooter. To check the valve with the fuel hose lowered into the bottle, we try to start the engine for 3-5 seconds, or until a stream of gasoline appears. In this case, the stream must be constant, at least “as big as a match”. If there is gasoline, but does not flow, the gas valve must be replaced.

If it is working, we look for the cause in the carburetor. First, the air filter must be clean. Because if there is a leak at the junction of the carburetor with the intake pipe, air is sucked in there, the mixture becomes too lean and starting the engine will be impossible. Make sure the gaskets between the carburetor are intact. Let's go further, the reason may be in the carburetor itself.

Checking whether gasoline is entering the combustion chamber

In order to determine whether gasoline is entering the combustion chamber of the engine, you need to look at the spark plug; if the electrode is dry, there is a spark and the scooter does not start, this means that the air-fuel mixture is not entering the combustion chamber. This could be for several reasons,

The vacuum valve that opens the supply of gasoline to the carburetor when the engine starts to rotate does not work

fuel filter clogged

there is no compression, and therefore no fuel is drawn in

The timing belt is not working correctly

In order to check whether the gasoline supply vacuum valve (faucet) is working correctly, you need to remove the hose that goes to the carburetor and try to start it,

if the faucet works normally, gasoline should flow from it while you turn the starter or crank the kickstarter - when the piston descends along the hose that goes from the engine to the faucet, a vacuum is created and the faucet opens. If the faucet does not work, then we try to put the hose straight from the tank to the carburetor, and if the scooter starts up after that, we replace the faucet.

We check the filter to see if it allows fuel to enter the carburetor. If it is dirty, replace it immediately. If gasoline reaches the carburetor normally, then remove and clean the carburetor

If the 4T scooter does not start after cleaning the carburetor, proceed to the next diagnostic step.

Doesn't the starter turn? What could it be?

1. The engine start button is normal, I insure myself in the parking lot and turn it on periodically. Not a button. 2. I checked the brake sensor. The brake light comes on on both brakes. That's not the reason. 3. Contacts on the starter relay? The relay doesn't even click, the starter is completely silent. 4. The relay is covered - Where is it located? I've already taken apart almost all the plastic. I don't see a starter relay. 5. The starter is covered - Unlikely. The engine wouldn't stall. And Bendix would click. While I'm hoping for the starter relay, I can't find it. It’s not on the frame, I removed the face with the headlight - there’s a lot of stuff, I don’t see the relay.

The question is: Could there be a resistance of about 700 ohms on the sidestand sensor? When opening, there is a complete break in contact; when the footrest is retracted, the resistance is 700 Ohms.

—————————————— The most difficult thing when riding a moped after winter is not to close your eyes from the pleasure!

How does a car starter work?

This is an electric motor with a retractor relay that turns the starter on and off, and a bendix that rotates the engine flywheel.

Design of a modern starter / autopulsar.ru

A typical starter design includes a rotor with a commutator, which is housed inside a housing with a stator or permanent magnets. At the rear there is a brush assembly and a cover with a bearing. In the front there is a gearbox, which may not be present in older models, a bendix and a second cover with a bearing. In the upper part there is a solenoid relay connected to the switching drive by a plug.

The starter operates in three stages.

  1. When you turn the ignition key, current passes through the starter control relay and is supplied to the solenoid relay. The latter moves the bendix along the shaft and engages the drive with the flywheel crown.
  2. At the same time, the power contacts of the retractor relay close. Current is supplied to the starter brush assembly, and the device begins to spin.
  3. After starting the engine, the rotation speed of the flywheel exceeds the rotor speed. The Bendix overrunning clutch engages and it is disconnected from the starter shaft. When the ignition key is returned to its original position, the solenoid relay is switched off. The starter drive is disengaged from the flywheel.

There are nuances

First, a little theory. How does the starter start the engine? Through engagement with the flywheel, the crankshaft rotates - this is how the launch occurs. If the starter cannot do its job for one reason or another (it is broken or the battery is discharged), then you can turn the crankshaft in another way - by rotating the drive wheels. The most well-known method is “from the pusher,” that is, by accelerating the car and then engaging the appropriate gear. In this case, the connection between the wheels and the engine will ensure that the crankshaft turns at a speed sufficient for starting. But there are nuances.

First of all, this method is suitable for cars with a manual transmission. An “automatic” with a torque converter, due to its design features, simply will not allow the transmission of torque to the crankshaft from the wheels. Other types of automatic transmissions, for example, robotic, with a clutch? Here you need to look at their features, but in any case it’s not worth it, so as not to harm the transmission.

As a matter of fact, even with a “mechanics”, starting “from a pusher” can have its consequences, although not for the box (the likelihood of damaging it is minimal), but for the engine. If the timing chain drive is with a hydraulic tensioner, there is a risk of the chain jumping when trying to start in this way. It is more reliable with a belt, but in severe frost it may not withstand the shock load. And in general, you need to understand that this method of starting the engine is an emergency. An old primitive unit is no stranger to this, but a modern one can then accumulate various errors into the control unit. In addition, such a start, albeit theoretically, is fraught with damage to the catalyst. So weigh the risks, as they say.

One more thing. Push start means driving the car with the engine initially turned off, that is, with the power steering and brakes not working. In this case, you should also perform non-standard manipulations with the gearbox and clutch, which, for example, can cause problems for a beginner. Plus, when the gear is engaged and the clutch is released, the drive wheels brake sharply - on a slippery surface this can lead to a loss of directional stability (for example, a rear-wheel drive car can start to skid). All this must be taken into account so that an attempt to start the engine in this way does not lead to an accident. This is about choosing a place, speed and moment.

Electric starter does not turn on

The ignition button is off - red on the right side of the steering wheel.

Dirty contacts in the ignition switch or near the starter button - unscrew the switch and clean the contacts using a special sprayer for electrical installations.

Battery voltage is too low: If you hear the characteristic sound of the starter relay firing, charge or replace the battery.

The main fuse or ignition relay has blown - check and replace what is needed.

A starter malfunction, for example, due to burned out stator windings or core, is unlikely to be corrected on your own, so contact a service center.

Typical reasons

Starting a scooter in cold weather may not always be possible due to various factors. First of all, you shouldn’t torture the equipment if it doesn’t start right away. Check the following:

  • Battery condition. If its charge is less than 12 A, the starter will not work. The normal voltage should be 14.5, this can be checked using a voltmeter. Try kickstarting the scooter.
  • No spark. If the scooter was working fine, but then stopped starting, you should check to see if there is a spark. To do this, you need to pull out the spark plug and check its condition. The problem could also be with the coil or switch.
  • The equipment may not be satisfied with the quality of gasoline.
  • The malfunction may be hidden in the power system. If the scooter has trouble starting when cold, try adjusting the carburetor.

Malfunctions in the power system

The power system may be to blame; If the piston group of the engine is working properly, then you should check whether gasoline enters the combustion chamber or not. This is easy to check: unscrew the spark plug and inspect it; if it is wet, it means gasoline is flowing. If it’s dry, we start checking with the gas tank: first, you need to find out if there is gasoline in there. If there is, check whether the tap is open. If everything is open, you need to remove the vacuum hose and clean it with air.

If everything is in order, move on to the carburetor float chamber. The bottom of the device is removed; it is usually held on by bolts. It contains a float. If the chamber is full, but gasoline does not flow to the cylinder, the nozzle is most likely clogged. You will need to pull out the needle, remove debris, dust, and all foreign particles. You can also check the scooter's petal valve: it is located below the carburetor. The petals may be damaged, causing the scooter to not start even if it is new. If the petals are not closed tightly enough, the valve must be replaced. In some cases, you can bend the petals with your fingers, but this measure will only help for a short time - only to start the scooter several times and ride it for parts.

In case of serious damage, you should check the piston, whether it gives the required compression ratio, the seals of the piston system, the CPG and the ignition system. But these reasons are more likely characteristic of old equipment that was not properly cared for.

No spark in spark plug

First of all, you should check the spark plugs if the moped does not want to start.

  • The spark plug needs to be unscrewed. You can check it using a special device that is sold in car dealerships; it's inexpensive. You can inspect the candle visually. It should not be black or damaged.
  • If the candle is wet, it needs to be dried. This should not be done with open fire.
  • The candle may be stained with oil and carbon deposits may be visible on it. All this is cleaned with metal brushes, similar to toothbrushes.
  • An easy way to check if there is a spark is by unscrewing the spark plug, putting the wire on it leading to the ignition coil and placing it on the cylinder. If you turn the starter, you will see a spark. If the spark plug is working but there is no spark, the problem is in the ignition coil.

Attention! The procedure must be carried out carefully, without touching the scooter frame or other metal objects with your bare hands, otherwise you will get an electric shock. If there is a spark and its color is yellow, then you need to install a new spark plug; yours is no longer suitable for use. A normal spark is blue and flows continuously

A normal spark is blue and flows continuously

If there is a spark and its color is yellow, then you need to install a new spark plug; yours is no longer suitable for use. A normal spark is blue and flows continuously.

If the coil is new, as are the spark plugs, but there is no spark, it is still worth checking the following:

  • Oxidation of electrical wire contacts. They will need to be cleaned; for example, the wires going to the battery often become oxidized.
  • No spark on the wire. This means that somewhere there is a bare wire that touches an ungrounded metal part, because of this the spark does not appear, since the current does not reach the coil. Check the wiring.
  • The switch may also fail. This is an inexpensive item that it doesn’t hurt to always have in reserve.

Checking Basic Systems

In order to understand why the scooter does not start, the problem must be looked for sequentially:

Supply system

After checking the electrics and making sure that everything is in order, you should get to the power system: if the fuel is supplied in the wrong amount, the scooter may not start. If there is a large amount of fuel, the carburetor overflows and the spark plug becomes wet, and if there is little fuel, there is not enough of it for the piston to move. To do this, you need to adjust the jet, floats and needle, moving the limiter on it. It wouldn't hurt to check the gasoline pump either: sometimes it simply fails, so the fuel doesn't go anywhere.

Ignition system

The entire ignition system must be checked if there was a spark and then disappeared. If the spark plug and coil are normal, but there is still no spark, you will have to check more thoroughly. The coil, generator winding, and switch come under suspicion. A multimeter can check all this: for example, they test a generator like this - one probe is connected to the engine crankcase, the second to the generator sensor.

The resistance of a working sensor is 500 Ohms. If the value is higher, the winding is faulty; if it is below 200 Ohms, the problem is in the coil.

Why the scooter does not start with the button - we identify the reasons

A scooter is a practical vehicle, economical and easy to drive. Modern models are reliable and easy to maintain, but various problems may arise during the operation of the scooter.

As a rule, at first the scooter starts from the button every other time, and then does not start at all using the electric starter. How to be in this case?

To fix a problem, you need to identify the cause of its occurrence. As practice shows, there can be many such reasons, but there are also quite common ones.

We list the most common reasons and give ways to solve them:

Hard to start in cold weather

This problem happens quite often. Many scooter riders do not pay serious attention to it while the scooter can still start. But when it comes to the point that the battery is completely discharged during the process of starting the equipment, they begin to scratch their heads.

First, try starting the scooter several times so that each time the pump pumps fuel completely. Turn the key, wait 5-7 seconds and then start. Do this several times, if it doesn’t work, look for the reason.

The main problems why a scooter starts poorly when cold is in the ignition system and power system. It also happens through air leaks. Let's take a closer look.

Why do the turn signals and signal on the scooter work but the rest of the electrical equipment does not work?

I installed a new battery, fully charged, but when starting from the electric starter, nothing happens, the starter doesn’t make a sound, there’s not even a click. This is a relay, as far as I understand?

Plus the turn signals don't work, and when switching left or right you hear a loud buzzing sound.

I turn on the ignition key, nothing shows on the dashboard, it doesn’t start with the button, but it starts with the crank. Please tell me what could be the reason?

I installed the minus-mass switch and now the battery won't go down..

Sequence of starting the Vento Riva II Classic moped from the starter. There are no diagrams or instructions, can anyone tell me.

Hello! Please tell me, today the electric start button on the scooter broke off (it fell out with shards of plastic and the spring flew out). What should I do? Should I buy a new button or the entire device, where is it located?

Hello!. The scooter stalled after replacing the fuel hose from the carburetor to the engine. The reason was found, but the answer to the question is, why did gasoline stop flowing from the carburetor?

Vasya Pupkin replied: May 17, 2022 at 05:26

Replace the scooter's vacuum valve, it costs pennies

The electric starter did not work, when you pressed the starter button there were clicks, it did not try to turn. While driving, when turning on turns, there were also clicks, and the battery quickly discharged. I checked a lot of things, went through the contacts, the problem did not go away, it got to the point where the circuits were ringing with a cartoon, I removed the battery, threw the + terminal from the starter away and started ringing the wiring for continuity and with each other, when the + terminals and - the terminals for the battery are shorted!! Bingo!! Insulation breakdown + terminals on the starter. I removed the soot and the characteristic smell, cleaned everything, removed the insulation between the terminal and the starter, restored the insulation, and everything was ok, the starter turns and starts. (I used self-vulcanizing insulating tape Vulcan brand Zubr, I recommend it, an excellent topic for everyday use). All the best.

What could be the problem, the starter turns but does not start at times, it started when I took the scooter back from repair, they changed the rings. Tell me what's the matter.

The compression is rather weak, so it won't start from the starter. Change the rings. I started it from a car battery because the piston was heating up, I jerked it off for so long that the cylinder got hot. On the Chinese, this kind of crap happens even when replacing the rings, until they rub it in, it won’t start from the starter.

Thank you. I'll take into account the lapping of the rings. otherwise, out of ignorance, I would have rushed into panic)))

Well, this doesn’t always happen; it depends on the wear of the cylinder; maybe everything will be fine right away.

I’ll add my 5 kopecks))). my wife doesn’t start when cold, the starter turns normally, but it doesn’t start at all. With a kick it starts normally. Once it warms up and reluctantly starts from the starter, I’m inclined to replace the piston rings. Maybe someone can also do something useful will tell you

Gee, that was such bullshit! Does the starter turn the engine in the right direction? Otherwise, if the brushes are not placed correctly, it turns the knee in the opposite direction and does not start.

No, that one. After a long time of fucking the car battery started up

This means a voltage drop. They are sensitive to this.

change the scooter. buy stealth or sum, Japanese ones are also in the subject. but in fact the starter on them let’s just say so. It doesn't have enough rpm power. if you install boost dc-dc/ then it will start. or with a screwdriver, an 18-volt battery is a proven option.

What we have is what we have. Everything is fine on the paw

From the claw, the engine simply turns at higher speeds than from the starter, so from the claw and starting there may not be enough compression. Is the scooter two-stroke or four-stroke? Four - supported intake valve. The two-piston has lifted, you can remove the plug and have a look.

4x. How to unlock it?

Everything is simple there. Remove the cover from the cylinder head with 4 bolts, you don’t even need to remove the cooling casing, install the camshaft sprocket so that the two small holes are parallel to the plane of the head, and the large hole is on top and check the gap between the rocker arm and the valve, you can do it without feeler gauge, just pull, there should be a gap, if there is none, adjust the valves. It’s just that with four-stroke Chinese, during operation, over time, the valve sits deeper in the seat and the gap between the valve and the rocker goes away, if no one has adjusted the valve since the purchase, it is 100% that the valve will be tightened.

I think it's a matter of contacts. Masse. Clean, lubricate, tighten. Maybe the contact in the starter is acting up.

A cold scooter (moped) engine does not start - looking for the reason

You can often encounter a situation where a warm scooter engine works fine, but when it’s cold, problems arise and starting it becomes extremely difficult, and in some cases, impossible. In this case, you will not be able to start the scooter using either an electric starter or a kickstarter. In this case, the problem usually lies in the ignition system or in the power system. Both breakdowns require serious attention and adherence to clear instructions, which I will describe below. Since most often the problem lies in the ignition system, let’s consider this point in more detail. After that, let's move on to the power system.

The scooter does not start due to problems in the ignition system. To begin with, we unscrew the spark plug and examine the electrodes; if they are melted or have any defects, we replace the spark plug with a new one. If the spark plug is wet, be sure to remove it from the cap and dry it, for example, I do this on a gas stove. Now we insert it back into the cap and check for the presence of a spark. How to check for a spark on a scooter, the scooter will not start due to problems with the spark plugs. To do this, you need to attach the spark plug to an unpainted part of the engine, usually to the cylinder, and crank the crankshaft using an electric starter or kick. Before doing this, do not forget to turn on the ignition of the scooter. You should not check the spark with your bare hands; you should definitely protect yourself with special thick rubber gloves or a piece of rubber. Another point to consider is that the spark plug must be kept away from the spark plug hole in the cylinder head, since gasoline can splash out from there and ignite. In my practice, this has not happened, but the recommendations should not be neglected. When the crankshaft is turned sharply, a blue spark should run through the spark plug, quite powerful and constant. If there is no spark, or it is yellow and appears occasionally, first of all, we take it as faulty and check the spark in the same way on a new spark plug. As a rule, in more than half of the cases, at this stage the problem is solved and the scooter works properly

That is why it is so important to always have a working spare spark plug with you, which will always save you on the road in such a situation. If, after you have installed a new spark plug, the problem remains, we look further for a known faulty place: The scooter does not start due to a faulty spark plug cap or connection with it

It also happens that the cap may not be in sufficiently tight contact with the high-voltage wire. To exclude this from the possible causes of the malfunction, we must check it. Unscrew the cap from the wire and bring the wire 2-3 mm to the metal part of the engine

Please note that if, in the case of a spark plug, we pressed it against the engine, then in this case the specified distance must be maintained. Rotate the crankshaft and pay attention to the end of the wire, a spark should jump between it and the engine (do not forget that we are doing all this with the ignition on). If the spark appears, you can breathe a sigh of relief

We examine the spark plug cap, if it is wet (and often because of this the normal spark disappears), then we dry it with a hairdryer, replace the spark plug and check the spark. No changes? Then we replace the cap with a new one and go. Now consider the option in which there is no spark even on the wire. This phenomenon can happen with the so-called current leakage. The essence of this phenomenon is that any exposed section of the high-voltage wire touches the metal part of the scooter. This may not happen directly, and the role of a conductor can be played by water, which accumulates in the area of the bare area when driving through puddles. Look carefully at the wire running from the spark plug to the ignition coil; if you do not find any places of disconnection or damage, then you can assume more serious breakdowns in the ignition system, namely: the ignition coil has failed; the ignition sensor (hall sensor) has failed; the switch is faulty; Any of these elements, if faulty, can cause a lack of spark or unstable operation of the scooter engine

You shouldn’t buy them right away; it’s important to determine which electrical appliance is faulty. To do this, for example, you can borrow exactly the same one from a friend to check

The scooter does not start due to problems in the power system.

The spark plug is faulty, the gap is incorrectly set, or the electrodes are covered with a black velvety coating

The next step is to check the spark plug. Of course, the glow number and rating of the spark plug should be as recommended by the scooter manufacturer. You should not use the first candle you find in the garage.

Now check the electrodes. They should be clean, without black velvety deposits, brick-colored.

The spark plug gap should be in the range – 0.6 – 0.8 mm.

At the slightest contamination, the spark plug must be cleaned and the gap checked again.

The presence of black carbon deposits in this case also indicates that the engine is running on a rich mixture, which means that the carburetor should be adjusted.

The starter rotates, but the engine does not start

There is no gasoline in the tank - this is known.

Closed tap – open it or set it to “reserve”.

Old or dirty fuel in carburetors - Empty the float chambers (small screw at the bottom) and add fresh fuel.

Fuel vacuum valve does not open - remove the hose and turn off the engine. If fuel doesn't flow, the vacuum diaphragm in the valve or intake line is most likely to blame. Set the valve to the “open” or “reserve” position.

Connect the fuel line or its filter to the tap - disconnect the cord from the tap and check if fuel flows through it. If so, this means the auxiliary fuel filter is clogged and needs to be replaced. If this does not help, remove and clean the faucet.

The air filter is clogged - replace or clean it.

No spark at the spark plugs - replace/check spark plugs and/or wires. On older motorcycles, replace the ignition coils.

Faulty ignition system or engine electronics - check battery connections and charging. Try a different battery. Check the ignition system: the contacts should be dry, the cables should be in order, and the ground should be well connected.

Preliminary inspection of a motorcycle Minsk

Everyone understands that for stable operation of a motorcycle engine it is necessary that the required amount of fuel enters the cylinder. It is also required that there is a good spark at the spark plug contacts.

If the Minsk motorcycle does not start, this means that fuel is not entering the combustion chamber or there is no spark. You should not rush to unscrew the spark plug or remove the carburetor, but rather listen to the opinion of experts who recommend starting to eliminate this problem with a simple inspection.

When inspecting a Minsk motorcycle, you need to check the following:

  • the presence of gasoline leaks on the hoses and the engine, after making sure that the gas tank tap is open;
  • presence of parts of damaged motorcycle electrical wiring.

If an inspection of the motorcycle does not reveal possible causes of the malfunction, then you need to move on to the next step.

The starter does not work after turning the ignition key

During the operation of vehicles, regardless of the type of engine installed, a common malfunction is starter failure, as a result of which it is not possible to start the engine after turning on the ignition. In other words, the car starter does not respond to turning the key in the ignition switch. In such situations, after turning the key, instead of cranking the engine crankshaft, the starter is completely silent, buzzes or makes clicks, but does not turn the engine. Next, we will look at the main malfunctions when the starter does not respond in any way to turning the key in the ignition, as well as other reasons that may cause the starter to not work.

Principle of operation

Why won't my scooter start? There can be many reasons for this - from a small malfunction of the engine to a serious breakdown. A moped differs from other types of vehicles in that it is an economical mode of transport. A typical average scooter has a 50cc engine, which is unable to burn too much fuel while driving. This explains the fact why it cannot reach very high speeds. The maximum he is capable of is moving at a speed of no more than 60 kilometers per hour. At the same time, the safety of the moped driver is at risk, since no side safety bars are provided here, as on full-fledged motorcycles. But the reliability and simplicity of the design of this relatively cheap transport are so convenient for everyday use that the scooter has always been, is and will be popular among the people. But even the most unpretentious equipment sooner or later begins to act up and let its owners down. And then one fine day you are faced with the fact that the scooter will not start. This may be due to careless handling, lack of timely technical inspection, as well as objective extraneous causes, consequences of an accident, and the like.

Sequence of repair actions

The main rule for detecting malfunctions and repairing a scooter is to step-by-step eliminate the elements of the system when identifying the causes of a breakdown in any of them. Search and repair, especially when starting from the starter, must be done in accordance with a strict sequence, where the chain may act as the beginning, and the end, for example, if there is or is no spark. It is worth noting that you do not need to immediately run for a new switch for the scooter, first make sure that the generator is functioning perfectly, only after that test the wiring if there is no spark, etc.

Checking Basic Systems

It is important to remember that gasoline has the ability to lose its properties if it sits in cold weather and may not even ignite. Also, before making a final diagnosis and starting to repair the moped, if it does not start from the starter, you need to make sure that the spark plug can do its job and the carburetor is functioning normally.

Remember that the scooter starts from the starter when it has an integral part with proper operation of the variator, clutch, camshaft group and valve. To put it simply, if all power systems are in normal condition, then there is a problem in the transmission, thanks to the crankshaft torque, which works closely with the variator.

In the process of diagnosing and repairing a scooter, in some cases it is necessary to do a thorough check of not only individual elements, but also the entire system. For example, if there is debris in the carburetor, provided that it is intact and the air filter is saturated, the presence of dirt in the cavity of the gas tank and the fuel filter is also carefully examined.

Cleaning the spark plug

The scooter also has trouble starting if soot settles on the spark plug. This is a combustion product that gradually forms on the part due to constant combustion processes in the engine. This situation occurs if the balance in the ratio of oil and gasoline used is disturbed. This is most common in scooters with two-stroke engines. When the engine is four-stroke, the source of the problem is most likely only in gasoline. It is necessary to use fuel with a higher octane number - from 80 and above. You can clean a candle by burning it. This element is unscrewed from the cylinder and its base is burned in a flame of fire. At the end, this part is wiped with very light sandpaper with fine grit and screwed into place. After all these activities, the moped should begin normal operation.

Cleaning and adjusting the carburetor

If you don't know why the scooter stalls when you give it gas, first check and adjust the carburetor.
If it was often removed and adjusted, it may be that somewhere it began to leak air. If such a problem occurs, you can use a sealant or buy gaskets for the carburetor. Let’s say the scooter stalls, you don’t know what to do. Then the first thing we do is clean the carburetor. Mostly the jets and auxiliary systems become clogged with dirt, so after cleaning the carburetor and adjusting all the jets, you can try to start the scooter again and give it gas. If the problem is not solved, move on to the main action - adjusting the needle to adjust the quality of the mixture. The needle in the carburetor performs the main task - adjusting the amount of fuel that is then supplied to the combustion chamber. Basically, you can adjust the quality of the mixture using a special jet on the carburetor, but if working with it does not produce results, you will have to manipulate the needle.

The needle is in close contact with the throttle handle, so when the handle is opened, the needle rises up and allows fuel to be supplied. That is, the higher the needle is raised, the more gasoline flows in and the power increases. Power guarantees better speed and traction. If you disassembled the carburetor, taking out the needle you will see 5 grooves on it, one of which has a retaining ring installed. Typically, such a ring is located in the center, that is, on the 3rd groove. If you lift the locking ring up, the needle will drop lower. This allows a leaner mixture to be supplied to the evaporation system, in which more air is supplied than gasoline. When installing the ring on the 4th and 5th grooves, the mixture becomes richer, where more gasoline is supplied than air.

Be careful that if you put the ring up or down as much as possible, this will not give the best result; the adjustment must be done gradually. Otherwise, the scooter will overheat, there will be a loss of power, and our main problem is that the scooter will stall when you press the gas handle. To find out the quality of the mixture, check the spark plug; its color will indicate whether the mixture is rich or lean.

Please note that there may also be other reasons why the scooter stalls when applying gas. Above we indicated the main ones; for some, the scooter stalls due to improper operation of the generator. Try, adjust, and share your problems and how to solve them.

Why won't my motorcycle start?

Article author: Moto Moto

Most often, some small thing is to blame, although there may be a more serious failure. Here are 16 reasons why your car's engine may not want to come back to life after a winter of inactivity.

The temperature outside is above zero, the asphalt is as dry as pepper, but if it gets cold, clothes will save you. It's time to start the season! Feeling a thirst for driving, you feverishly enter the garage, like a young man before a first date, with your hand trembling with impatience, insert the key into the ignition, turn it, press the starter... What happens next is like a blow to the stomach, because instead of the music of the engine, you hear silence.

It's not hard to predict that you'll swear first. However, it is definitely too early to fall into despair. Instead of getting angry, check a few things, step by step, according to the diagram we offer you. If you've winterized a good car and haven't picked it up in the meantime (that is, you haven't unknowingly ruined something), you can deal with most reasons why an engine won't run.

Reasons why the scooter does not start when cold

:is::is::is::is: killed. I won’t say anything further. I’ll just ask a question - uncle, how old are you? and then what the HELL they say to check the compression not hot, not cold! and then when the engine is slightly warmed up. - I’ll answer.

It’s nice when the engine of a four-stroke scooter works “like a clock” and does not cause any trouble to its owner. But basically this only happens when the unit is warm. As soon as the two-wheeled “minibike” sits in the cold for a while, that’s it – there’s no way to start it when it’s cold. And you can't make it purr either from the starter or using the foot. So why does it happen that a four-stroke scooter does not start? The most common problems are in the ignition and fuel supply systems. More on this below.

Diagnosing a candle

The first step is to conduct a visual inspection of the spark plug. Unscrew it and look carefully to see if there are any mechanical damages or defects associated with melting. If any of this is present, then the spark plug should be replaced. In addition, moisture could get on it. To verify this, you need to remove the ignition element from the cap and let it dry. You can even do this over a gas one.

Quite often you can see cases when the owner is faced with the following problem: the scooter will not start. This may be due to a large number of reasons. Most often these are typical breakdowns or malfunctions, especially if the moped was parked in cold weather. Depending on the identified problem, the moped can be repaired in a few minutes or several hours.

Typical reasons

First of all, you need to check: the ignition and power systems. Carry out a check in those places that can cause the moped to move. The reasons why the scooter does not start, especially in cold weather, may be the following:

No spark in spark plug

The scooter does not start because there is no spark in the spark plug. In this case, you need to do the following: the spark plug is unscrewed and checked for suitability. Connects to the ignition coil using a wire.

Liquid or dirt in the air filter

Check your scooter's air filter. It must be clean and soaked in oil. Some filter boxes, when the scooter is used intensively in rainy weather, and even in deep puddles, allow water to pass through perfectly, which is why the filter element (usually foam rubber) absorbs moisture and the mixture is sharply enriched. Sometimes drops of water can get into the carburetor from here, which naturally should not be there. This point also cannot be excluded.

Sometimes a situation happens when the scooter works normally without problems, but when you need to start it in the cold, problems begin. The scooter may start poorly when cold or not at all. Therefore, today we will find the answer to the question why the scooter does not start well when cold.

The motorcycle won't start...

What could this be and what should I do? Our advice:

FIRST

Pay attention to whether the starter works when you press the button

If it turns slowly and the lights on the dashboard go out, then most likely your battery is simply dead, look for an option to charge it.

If there are zero such options, try to jump start the motorcycle (read about this below) in order to get to the nearest motorcycle/car repair shop to find out the cause of the malfunction or at least to recharge the battery.

THIRD. The starter is operating normally.

We check the fuel valve; if it is suddenly closed, open it.

And, just in case, again it happens to everyone, we look to see if there is gasoline in the tank.

FOURTH. If everything is in order with this, then we look at the spark plugs.

Unscrew the spark plugs. Are they damp and smell like gasoline? This means they are flooded. This can be for two reasons - you filled them or there is a malfunction in the motorcycle.

If you did this, for example, you turned off or started the motorcycle incorrectly, then you can fix it as follows.

Dry the spark plugs, blow them out and heat them. !We do not clean with a wire brush!

TIP: purchase and carry a spare set of candles with you; once filled candles can stop working at any time, even if you bought them just yesterday.

If after the above steps the motorcycle does not start, then there is a clear malfunction either in the presence of a spark or in the fuel supply. You will have to take the motorcycle to a specialist motorcycle service center.

The candles are fine, they are dry.

FIFTH. Checking the fuel supply.

Remove the fuel supply hose from the carburetor/injector.

Carefully! There must be gasoline in the hose, and it may be under pressure. If there is no gasoline there, then the problem is most likely in the fuel pump or fuel tap.

If there is no gasoline there, then the problem is most likely in the fuel pump or fuel tap.

And if you can try to solve the problem with the faucet yourself (rinse, blow out, clean), then it is better to entrust the problem with the gas pumps to specialists, so as not to make things worse.

All these actions led to nothing?

SIXTH. Evacuation of the motorcycle to a motorcycle service to determine the cause and repair the motorcycle.

And one final piece of advice)

If you are not at all versed in motorcycle technology, do not know where the injector is located, how to unscrew the spark plugs, how to open the fuel tap, and so on, do not try to fix the breakdown yourself, so as not to cause harm. And don’t try to learn this over the phone, it’s better to deliver the motorcycle to the nearest motorcycle service center, it will be faster and cheaper)

And now what is worth learning, as it may come in handy:

How to start a motorcycle “from a pusher”?

This is done as follows...

We turn on second gear, ignition, depress the clutch and accelerate the motorcycle, pushing it from the side while holding the handlebars (there is no need to get on the motorcycle at this time).

Having gained some speed, we sharply release the clutch and begin jerkily adding gas (open/close). The motorcycle will begin to chug, and at this moment it is necessary to jump onto the back of the saddle to ensure maximum traction of the rear wheel with the road surface.

After this, the motorcycle should start!

Typical problems with the ignition system of Chinese scooters

There are times when scooter owners are faced with the problem that it will not start. The reasons for this can be different, but there are also quite typical ones. In some cases, fixing the problem takes a few minutes.

Let's look at several reasons that lead to the scooter not starting. All examples are real, obtained during the repair of the Chinese scooter ABM Storm L and Motoland VXR5 .

The scooter does not start with the button.

If the scooter does not, but starts from the kickstarter without problems (from the “leg”), then you should pay attention to the main fuse, which is located in the battery compartment.

This same fuse may be the cause. There was a real case when, when measuring the voltage at the battery terminals, 13 volts was displayed on the multimeter display. The norm, considering that the battery was slightly discharged.

When measuring the voltage after the fuse, the multimeter showed 12.8 volts. Wonderful, isn't it? Does a piece of wire (fuse) really drop 0.2 volts? In theory, this shouldn't happen. The voltage in the scooter's electrical network after the ignition switch was also measured. The voltage was a little more than 5 volts and was fluctuating. The turn signal relay also began to crackle ungodly after the scooter was started with the kickstarter and the turn signals were turned on.

Due to the fact that the fuse was made, to put it mildly, poorly, the wire inside the glass bulb barely touched the contact caps. Because of this, the electrical contact in the fuse was poor. This is where those 0.2 volts of voltage were lost.

Due to the fact that the turn relay received undervoltage, it crackled, since the supply voltage was sometimes enough to operate the electromagnetic relay, sometimes not.

Also, when pressing the “Start” button, the starter, which spins the engine shaft when starting, did not start. Naturally, since the voltage in the scooter's electrical network was underestimated due to a faulty fuse.

After replacing the faulty fuse, the scooter began to start with the “Start” button.

In case of such malfunctions, you should first check the integrity of the connecting conductors in the engine starting circuit. If you don't have a scooter wiring diagram handy, take a look here. There you will find a scooter wiring diagram that is suitable for almost all Chinese scooters.

Let's look at another problem.

The scooter does not start either from the start button or from the kickstarter.

What could be the problem?

Many people encounter this problem when they try to start a scooter after winter. In this case, the scooter seizes, but does not start. The electric starter turns, but something is missing to start the engine itself. The cause may be old fuel left in the gas tank. It is better to drain the old fuel and fill the tank with new one.

Another possible cause could be the spark plug and the wires that connect the CDI ignition module, ignition coil and spark plug.

First, it is better to check for the presence of the spark itself. You can do it like this.

To check the spark on a scooter you need to get to the spark plug. To do this you will have to remove the seat and find the cap.

The spark plug cap is removed with a little effort. It is attached to the candle with an elastic metal clip, which is built into the cap.

There is no need to twist the cap with the wire clockwise! Some people do this to remove the cap. This can damage the contact between the wire and the cap.

The spark plug can be unscrewed using a socket wrench. I filmed it like this.

Next is actually checking the spark.

We insert the spark plug into the cap and lean the outer metal edge of the spark plug against the metal body of the engine. Just like in the photo.

This is how we connect the negative, common contact of the spark plug with the common wire of the scooter's electrical wiring. Then we turn the spark plug so that we can see the gap where the spark should jump. Press the “Start” button, as we do when starting the engine. In this case, you will most likely need the help of another person. One is uncomfortable.

The scooter does not start from the starter - reasons and methods for solving the problem

A common problem is that a scooter or moped starts with a kickstarter, but refuses to start with an electric starter. Let's consider all possible causes and methods for eliminating them. There may be several reasons why a scooter or moped does not start from the starter, both individually and in combination. Let's look at each of them:

Electric starter does not work

The scooter will not start from the starter if the electric starter itself is faulty. Everything is simple here. If the battery is serviceable and charged, the entire electrical circuit works, but when you press the starter button, only a click of the relay is heard, most likely the electric starter is faulty, or the contacts have come loose (oxidized).

It is very easy to check if the starter is working properly. Apply voltage to it directly from the battery, bypassing the starter relay. If the starter turns, then it is normal.

Wear of the CPG and engine parts

We start with a compression test. The first sign of a significant drop in compression is the lack of proper resistance when pressing the kick starter lever.

Compression is measured using a compression meter, after which, if it drops below permissible values, the engine is repaired with the obligatory replacement of damaged parts. The cylinder of a two-stroke engine, if necessary, is bored by specialists, and a repair piston with rings is purchased. We discussed compression in more detail here.
