The Japanese corporation Yamaha is one of the best developers of a variety of equipment, which includes various snowmobiles and utility vehicles.

Among the entire range of snowmobiles, the Yamaha Viking 540 model deserves special attention, which is the most successful development of the corporation.

This snowmobile is very popular and is used in many parts of the world. This is due to the fact that the machine has high quality and traction characteristics. But in addition to the great engine power, the Yamaha Viking 540 family also has excellent handling, making the machine suitable for any owner's needs.

Viking 540 models and their features

In 2010, a new and improved model, the Yamaha Viking 540 III, entered the market.
Its capabilities have received the best ratings from ordinary users and professionals.

Yamaha Viking 540 III

This snowmobile will undoubtedly become a faithful assistant. He is strong and very pliable.

It has already received high marks from residents of the north and hunters, who were able to fully experience the benefits of the Yamaha Viking 540 III.

It has a 535 cc 2-stroke engine with a power of 53 horsepower.

Viking 540 IV Tough Pro

Maximum reliability and affordability - this is the Viking 540 IV Tough Pro.

It is these two properties that domestic consumers are always lacking.

This new modification, which appeared in 2015, was created specifically for use in Russia. All the features of the difficult conditions of this country are taken into account here.

A specially prepared mixture of oil and gasoline (premix) is used for lubrication. The result is high reliability in sub-zero temperatures.

And the use of manual start provides a significant reduction in weight. It also features a simple but particularly robust bumper design.

As a result of these innovations, the VK540 Tough Pro snowmobile is 16 kg lighter than its predecessor.

As a result, controllability, stability and mobility have increased, and the operational capabilities of the vehicle have become wider.

So the latest model of the VK540 snowmobile has excellent consumer qualities.

Negative reviews – Operational purpose

, and any other Russian oil M8;M12 MS20 is preferable just to mix into the tank, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the car is simply super better and does not need reliable maneuverability and an usable speed, in general, for hunting this speed is completely sufficient, but higher is no longer safe for life, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that this model has been in use for absolutely 3 years and has not had any problems, only the spark plugs have been changed, as if it were new, it will still carry you around, but the main thing is that the equipment is good, at least better than the Scandic, and it is cheaper to maintain, and the most economical internal combustion engine among 2-stroke engines , on the plus side, I also went hunting, killed a moose, and we drove him out of the forest on a sled and on a lowered vehicle without any problems. In principle, with minor reservations, all these machines, especially, in my opinion, the Taiga-Patrol with a 600 mm wide SWT Super WideTrake track, can be considered potential competitors of the Yamaha Viking.

User manual

Particular attention should be paid to safety rules. The first point the manufacturer recommends is to study all warning labels on the case

It is necessary to familiarize yourself with the management functionality.

It is worth considering that the equipment is not intended for movement on the streets. This could lead to a dangerous situation. It is prohibited to drive a snowmobile while intoxicated, or after using drugs. Safety is closely related to proper care. Before use you should check:

  • spark plug;
  • oil level;
  • oil filter;
  • fuel level;
  • fuel hose;
  • oil hose;
  • carburetor - jet adjustment;
  • fan belt;
  • manual starter;
  • engine switch;
  • exhaust system;
  • drive casing;
  • drive caterpillar.
  • brakes;
  • drive chain;
  • lighting;
  • battery;
  • clutch.

The manufacturer recommends taking tools and spare parts with you on your trip. This will allow you to quickly and independently carry out repairs in the event of a minor breakdown.

The most important stage of operation is running in a new snowmobile. During this period, the engine should not be subjected to high loads. For approximately the first 200 km, driving on wet snow must be avoided. During break-in, it is necessary to fill the fuel tank with a mixture of gasoline and oil in a ratio of 50:1. This is about 0.2 liters of oil for about 10 liters of gasoline.

Skills in operating equipment are acquired through practice and over time. At the beginning of training, you should not perform complex maneuvers. Movement speeds should be low; you can move to high speeds only after mastering the skills.

What is a snowmobile for?

As a rule, it is replaced by snowmobiles. These could be snowmobiles from Yamaha, Ermak, or Russian Mechanics. All such equipment for moving on snow will be the optimal transport for snowy areas, because it allows you to use the rain sheet for the fastest and most comfortable transportation.

Of course, without this type of movement it is impossible to imagine communication in those areas where it is not possible to build roads.

Snowmobiles will become very relevant for those who love fast and well-controlled riding, as well as hunting in snowy areas.

Thus, this unit is really great for performing its functions and allows you to move quickly in the snow.

Whichever sled you choose, it's worth remembering that you may also need an AI sled license.

Advantages and features of a snowmobile

One of the main advantages of the machine is the ability to move on snow surfaces of any complexity. High cross-country ability is achieved due to the fact that, compared to other models of Yamaha snowmobiles, this machine has a lower weight. The presence of a reverse gear makes it easy to get out of ravines hidden under the snow.

The manufacturer has equipped this model with wider skis than previous products, which are equipped with special runners. Thanks to this, the snowmobile has excellent handling.

Characteristics of the Yamaha Viking 540-4 snowmobile

The handles of the Yamaha Viking 540 IV are equipped with electrical heating. This eliminates the risk of frostbite on the operator's hands during long driving. The model has comfortable footrests for the driver and passenger, which are equipped with special hooks. Hooks prevent shoes from sliding on the surface of the footboard.

Compared to previous products, the manufacturer installed a wider track on the Yamaha Viking 540 IV. This makes it possible to move easily even on loose snow. The wide track and skis increase the area. The large area of the product reduces the pressure on the snow cover when moving.

To improve traction on a Yamaha snowmobile, the manufacturer installs 7T drive sprockets. the front of the vehicle has a small bumper. Despite its light weight and small dimensions, the front bumper of the snowmobile is highly durable. The bumper protects the product body from small mechanical shocks. The car has an external trunk, which can carry hand luggage and other small items.

Vehicle characteristics

The vehicle is equipped with a transmission with two gears and good reverse. The Yamaha Viking 540 model received all the highest quality from the manufacturers, and the performance indicators and capabilities of the vehicle have expanded significantly.

The vehicle has the following features:

  • vehicle weight - 316 kg;
  • engine type - gasoline.
  • rear shock absorber - monotube hydropneumatic;
  • launch - manual;
  • fuel tank volume - 31 l.

Reference. The vehicle is equipped with wide skis, which provides the Yamaha Viking 540 with excellent maneuverability and controllability even in deep snow.

Vehicle Features

Unlike the Yamaha Viking 540 3 snowmobile, the technical characteristics of the 4th generation are more powerful, and the total weight is significantly reduced. Engineers installed a simple but very strong bumper, which also reduced weight. As a result, the snowmobile became 16 kg lighter than previous models. This change in mass has a noticeably better effect on the stability, controllability and mobility of the vehicle.

The following is installed as standard:

  • electric starter;
  • reverse;
  • heated steering wheel and accelerator lever;
  • halogen lamp 60/55W.

Important! Manufacturers have installed higher quality, stronger running boards, which increases the reliability of the vehicle. To protect the driver from snow and headwinds, an enlarged windshield is installed

Engine, transmission and other indicators

The engine is a two-cylinder petrol two-stroke power plant. Also, the “Japanese” Yamaha Viking 540 model is equipped with a Mikuni carburetor with a chamber with a diameter of 38 mm. The engine uses an ignition system called Ducati CDI, which ensures smooth operation in any operating mode. Such snowmobiles can also be used in warm weather conditions, because a forced air cooling system is installed inside.

    I have always been amazed by the quality of Japanese technology. 40 horsepower with an engine capacity of 535 cubic meters is solid! Another concern is the price issue. Has the Yamaha Viking gone up in price much in the last couple of months?

    Prices have not changed significantly, while already imported equipment is still being sold. Mostly from 2013. The newest models have risen in price, quite significantly.

    My husband and I are lovers of outdoor activities and high-speed snowmobiling! That year we purchased a snowmobile - a Yamaha Viking 540. Crazy about this purchase! Easy to operate, high speed, stylish design. Indeed, this is the most successful device of the company.

Owner reviews

The Yamaha Viking 540 4 snowmobile, according to owner reviews, deserves a lot of attention, like most other Japanese equipment:

  • The reliable two-stroke 535 cc engine works like clockwork, the main thing is that it is serviced on time. Fuel consumption, however, is slightly higher than four-stroke engines, even more cubic capacity. Low gearing allows you to transport fairly heavy loads, in particular 300 kilograms. The rear suspension provides a smooth ride, just like the front one.
  • The trunk is spacious. The fuel tank is not enough, as it is designed for only 31 liters of gasoline. Because of this, reinforcement is required - an additional canister.
  • This snowmobile is suitable as a workhorse and assistant.
  • At sub-zero temperatures it starts quite easily.

Of the minuses:

  • Sometimes there are problems with spark plugs. During the entire period of operation, the owners reported that they only managed to reach a speed of 100 km/h on the snowmobile.
  • Fuel consumption reaches decent values: about twenty liters of gasoline per hundred kilometers.

Tradition comes first

The utilitarian VK 540 Viking can easily be called a legendary model. Reliability, unpretentiousness, simplicity of design and low price - these are the qualities thanks to which this device has been the market leader on one-sixth of the landmass for many years now. And the more difficult the task was for the development team of the new generation of “five hundred and fortieth”, because the successor to the bestseller must become even better in all respects, so as not to miss the “prizing place”.

And here we have the VK 540 IV! A quick glance is enough to notice the absence of fundamental changes in the appearance of the new product. A discreet, in many ways even simple design, a square headlight under an almost vertical windshield that has already become a signature feature, a flat “parallelepiped” seat - the differences in the appearance of the two generations are practically invisible to the naked eye. Well, it’s quite logical that you shouldn’t expect a flight of design ideas and pretentious lines from a time-tested “utilitarian” to the core. And people who use a snowmobile as a household assistant and a daily vehicle still, as a rule, value other qualities.

But on the technical side there are a lot of changes. And for their visual illustration, the organizers provided journalists with several “third” VK 540s. There couldn’t be better conditions for comparison!

Let's get comfortable behind the wheel of the new product. Despite its apparent simplicity, the seat is quite comfortable. The seating position is vertical, traditional for a utilitarian snowmobile. But the location of the steering wheel seemed not ideal - for a person taller than 180 cm, the main control element is perhaps a little low. This will probably cause some discomfort when turning. However, let's not draw hasty conclusions.

There’s a lone speedometer on the dashboard – you couldn’t get more ascetic. But there are no complaints about the perception of information; large numbers are read well. The Limited version additionally includes a tachometer and rear-view mirrors - things that are certainly useful and also quite informative.

And here is the first cardinal difference in the ergonomics of the VK 540 IV from its predecessor - a different design of the footrests. Instead of round profiles, metal plates with teeth are used at the edges. They hold the boot securely, and now even if the footrest becomes icy, neither the pilot nor the passenger’s foot will slip.

By the way, it has now become a little more comfortable for the passenger to sit. Firstly, the shape and profile of the handles on the sides have been slightly changed, and they themselves have become softer - an undeniable plus for the “second number” on a long journey. Secondly, the VK 540 IV is equipped with a new torsion bar suspension with gas-filled shock absorbers, which should add comfort to both “riders”. Are we sure?

Snowmobiles Yamaha Viking VK 540

The first Viking went on sale 30 years ago and was so loved by customers that the manufacturer transformed the car again and again and released new generations. The last one came out in 2022. For a third of a century, Yamaha snowmobiles have been the most widespread and popular. We will focus on the Viking VK 540 IV and Viking VK 540 V versions.

Viking VK 540 IV

  • Released: 2013.
  • The fourth Viking was distinguished from previous versions by greater efficiency and maneuverability.
  • Fuel tank capacity 31 l.

Wide skis have always been a Viking advantage. They provide him with excellent maneuverability. This beauty will not get stuck on the most difficult track. The Camoplast track copes with the tasks even in the deepest snow. This is facilitated by the ends of the guides, which are slightly raised upward. This design feature allows the snowmobile to glide smoothly in the most difficult situations.

The reliable engine has proven itself to be excellent. Economical and simple, it can withstand long-term operation.

The snowmobile has a forced cooling function, which allows it to be operated even in above-zero temperatures.

A lightweight, yet powerful unit, the Viking VK 540 IV is loved by customers. Despite the fact that the next generation of Viking has appeared, it is still one of the top sellers. And this model has the best price-quality ratio.

Viking VK 540 V

The presentation of the fourth generation died down not so long ago, but the fifth has already arrived. And the new model differs not in a couple of new buttons and color, but radically. This is a completely new snowmobile, the most modern and relevant.

He has a special story. Season 2016-2017, when the Viking VK 540 V entered the Russian market, the economy of our country was experiencing difficulties. And the magnificent new snowmobile was not appreciated enough.

But the situation in the country has improved, and the time has come for the fifth Viking. Today it is one of the sales leaders at Yamaha dealerships.

What has changed in the new model?

Firstly, a new and improved track: Cobra WT 500 wide with 38 mm snow hooks. The equipment confidently moves forward not only on a flat surface, but also overcoming a rise or deep snow.

Secondly, the Viking has become easier to control. If earlier it was difficult with it when cornering, now this problem has disappeared. The advantage of the Japanese manufacturer has always been that it listens to the opinions of consumers. And this time the requests of the owners of the 4th generation were heard: the fifth Viking is controlled easily and simply, including when cornering.

Although the design of the steering wheel has not undergone major changes, something has subtly changed. The suspension settings have changed, the footpegs have improved: almost no snow sticks to them. The snowmobile has become easier to control, even when banking on corners.

The improved shape of the windshield and deflectors protect passengers from snow while driving. The aerodynamics of the snowmobile have improved so much that snow does not fall not only on the passengers, but also on the hood, and under it, and into the engine.

The operation of the Viking VK 540 V engine is smooth, the rhythm does not change despite the speed, altitude or temperature changes.

Motor Features:

  1. Fuel tank volume is 44 liters, 13 liters more than its predecessor;
  2. Engine characteristics: 2-stroke, 2-cylinder, in-line, air-cooled, 535 cm3, 46 hp. With.

The engine has become more powerful compared to previous versions, and the power reserve has doubled.

The Mikuni carburetor has changed, it began to heat up

This is an important change because it allows the engine to start colder and allows for improved engine warm-up. And this factor is important in Russia in winter, especially in the coldest regions

The lights became brighter. They were added to the rear to make reversing easier and more convenient.

Despite the pleasure of dashing snowmobiling, we must remember that it can not only entertain, but also work hard. The Viking is excellent at towing loads and copes with this task with a bang.

Test drive Yamaha VK540 III Viking

Yamaha VK540 III Viking is one of the most popular snowmobiles in Russia among foreign vehicles. But last year, Rybinsk launched its new snowmobile “RM Taiga-Varyag 550” to the market. The goal is not hidden: to squeeze out the Japanese Viking in the domestic market.

Who are the real Vikings and Varangians and what do they have in common? Let the experts of the early Middle Ages figure it out. Snowmobiles Yamaha VK540 III Viking and Taiga-Varyag 550 are almost twins in their technical characteristics.

Production of the Yamaha VK540 began somewhere in the early 90s of the last century. The model was last upgraded in 2001, and the third generation Yamaha VK540 III Viking is now on sale. "Taiga-Varyag 550", according to the Hamburg account, is also a device designed far from from scratch. The first Taiga rolled off the production line at the turn of 1998–1999. The snowmobile was designed in the image and likeness of the Bombardier Skandic 1996 model year. In mid-1998, there was talk about organizing a joint Canadian-Russian enterprise. However, the financial crisis struck and Russian Mechanics and Bombardier (BRP did not exist at that time) parted ways like ships at sea. Nevertheless, Rybinsk businessmen brought the Taiga project to mass production. Today there is a whole family of “taiga” snowmobiles on the market: “Taiga-Classic” (38 hp, price 189,000 rubles), “Taiga-Lux” with lever front suspension (55 hp, price 212,600 rubles .), “Taiga-Attack” (65 hp, price 241,600 rub.), “Taiga-Patrol” 550 SWT (55 hp, price 228,200 rub.). In principle, with minor reservations, all these machines, especially, in my opinion, the Taiga Patrol with a 600 mm wide SWT (Super WideTrake) track, can be considered potential competitors of the Yamaha Viking. Meanwhile, this seemed not enough, and it was decided to create a real clone of the VK540 III Viking (in terms of technical characteristics) and enter into open competition with Yamaha. And the struggle is worth the candle. Every year, such utilitarian machines are sold in the price category of 200,000–300,000 rubles. About 2,000 units are sold in Russia. Rybinsk snowmobile builders are not going to give away such an enviable “piece of the pie” just like that. Moreover, in recent years the situation has clearly not been developing in their favor. The popularity of foreign cars is growing steadily. That is why the Taiga-Varyag model was thrown into battle against the most dangerous and experienced opponent - the Yamaha VK540 III Viking.

Taiga-Varyag and Viking are equipped with 2-stroke, 2-cylinder air-cooled power plants. Each has one Mikuni carburetor. The engine power of the Japanese snowmobile is 46 hp. s., for the domestic one - 50 l. With. The advantage of 4 “horses” is purely formal. The Varyag is not superior to the Viking either in terms of acceleration dynamics or maximum speed. Moreover, from a purely personal impression, the Rybinsk engine is inferior to its Japanese counterpart in terms of traction at low speeds and shows a much greater fuel appetite. Offhand and very roughly - about 30-32 liters per 100 km versus 22-25 liters for the Viking. Apparently, it’s no accident that our “fighter” has a 7-liter larger fuel tank. It is clear that gasoline consumption depends on the snow, driving style, carb settings, etc., etc. But the fact that the Varyag is more gluttonous is for sure.
